Best cover I ever heard was the Long Beach Dub All-stars' cover of Op. Ivy's "Take Warning". I honestly like the cover better, something I can't say about any other cover song.

There's actually a local band where I live that do very good covers for Incubus, not anything specific, I've heard them play quite a few of their songs.
Along with that, they've wrote a few songs of their own. If I had to describe the songs, I'd just say they were done in the Incubus style. They call themselves Central.

There is always the Hendrix version of "All Along the Watch Tower." The best cover of all time, and even Bob Dylan himself admitted the Hendrix cover was a better song.

Joey Ramone's version of 'Beautiful world' (L. Armstrong) and The beautiful south's version of 'I started a joke' (M. Gibb) are both really good.

Bob Dylan is one of the greatest song writers ever. And covers of him tend to mostly be better than the original. Excellent stuff.
For all into old nintendo music, I suggest trying to find the minibosses. All sorts of video games related music done rock style. Me First And The Gimmie Gimmies do nothing but covers, who somebody mentioned already, and they tend to do them pretty well. David Bowie has an entire album covering his favorites songs of the late 60's/maybe early 70's I think. Other than that, I can only think of particular covers, not really one band that does a large amount.
Ahh yes, and if you can stand them, Devo's got some great/unique covers under their belt. Best version of The Stones' Satisfaction ever.
Well, my fav all-time band Nickel Creek does quite a few covers that I personally find quite grooveee.
First off, they do a neato rendition of the Super Mario Bros. theme in the midst of their trademark song, "The Fox". Also popping its head up in "The Fox" is Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and Radiohead's "The National Anthem".
One of the biggest hits off their album "This Side"(which was just certified gold today. Woohoo) is a cover of a Pavement song entitled, "Spit on a Stranger".
My personal favorite however is when they go from "The Lighthouse's Tale" to "Yellow" by Coldplay.
Also, whoever said Me First and The Gimme Gimme's. We have to play them every day at the radio station, as a rotational. Quite a....unique cover of the jazz classic, "Mona Lisa".

Chris Isaak's rendition of "I want you to want me" from Cheap Trick is quite good.
Tears for fears did a nice rendition of "Ashes to ashes" by David Bowie.
Foo Fighters tried to do a cover for "Baker Street" but I still prefer the original by Gerry Rafferty
Fear Factory did a powerful cover of the song "Cars" originally performed by Gary Numan.
And of course, my favorite is Stev Howe and Annie Haslam's version of "Turn of the Century" which is a song by Yes (you could say it is a half a cover, since Steve Howe was the original guitarist on the Yes song).

Guns N' Roses did wonderful making cover songs of Knockin' On Heaven's Door and Since I Don't Have You, originally done by Bob Dylan, and Don McLean (or Grease?) respectively.

Regina Spektor's live cover of Madonna's "Love Profusion" was something else; I liked it.<3
However, the positively worst cover ever would be that horrible, Duff sister cover of "Material Girl". How they completely murdered a classic, I don't know. Those bitches. >.>

Say what now!? Hilary Duff doing a "Material Girl"? What's next - Lohan doing "Like a Virgin"?

I just happen to hear Metallica's "Turn The Page", a Bob Seger original and man, I was blown away! The whole angst and rock elements really made it the perfect single for me to listen to when I wanna choke somebody to death (X_X)

funny, hearing that cover made me wanna choke somebody to death too. Probably for the oposite reason though. If you want to hear Metallica do an epic cover, though, thier version of Stone Cold Crazy by Queen does the unthinkable, and actually surpasses the original.

Please don't jinx this.
It's as if all the talent in the world has evaporated, and the "trendsetters" are simply copying what was popular back in the day to stand out.

If you want to hear the perfect cover go no further than Bauhaus, with their cover for David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. In fact, I think Bauhaus' rendition is better than the original.

For cover songs, look no further than the Leningrad Cowboys. I'd highly suggest getting their most recent album, Zombies Paradise (http://www.leningradcowboys.fi/main.site?action=siteupdate/view&id=26). The first song is my favorite off the album, but really everything's quite good. I especially loved their renditions of My Sharona and Starman. :)

OH, wow. Great call, Doc. how could I forget that one. Even the most rabid Bowie fan can't argue with Peter Murphy's vocal take on it.
That's how a cover should be, unique, exciting, but still true to it source.

Ah Bauhaus, how I miss you. Before Peter Murphy got all angsty and starting singing about falling with knives, and Love and Rockets got all...Love and Rockets-y (not that I don't like L&R). There was just something magic about that band. I had the vinyl single of Bauhaus' Ziggy Stardust cover, in mint condition. After my record player broke, I gave it to a collector friend of mine.
I'm really particular about covers. Most of the time, I hate them. Almost every Depeche Mode cover I've ever heard has been god-awful. I remember liking Orgy's cover of New Order's Blue Monday, but I wouldnt say it was better than the original, just good. I really like Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of People are Strange, that was good stuff right there. Mephisto Walz did a pretty good cover of Painted Black, the vocals were shit (this was recorded in some little hole in the wall club somewhere), but the guitars were awesome and all distorted. Oh, and I absolutely adore Voltaire's cover of Tori Amos Caught a Light Sneeze.
...yeah. None of you have a clue, do you? :P

Yes, this will sound emo, but the only cover I actually really like is Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt." The song takes on a different meaning and a different emotion when he sings it. He sings from the viewpoint of an older man looking back at his life, which is a perspective that NIN can't have. Both versions are moving, but for different reasons, so I love them both.

Err, not emo at all Dheu. Cash isn't emo in any sense of the word, ever. He is the original bad ass. And NIN is industrial, even though Reznor is a sell out bastard :P

Good. I was worried that the emo crowd might have taken over songs like that for their personal anthems of angst.
Or something.
Thank God they haven't.

Oh... I remembered another great cover:
Dear Prudence, originally a Beatles song, covered by Siouxie and the Banshees (in fact, the original was kind of a lame song)
By the way Liegy... great call on People are Strange by Echo and the Bunnymen. The little keyboard solo they do in the middle of the song is great.

I love the Dear Prudence cover, I totally forgot that it was a cover. The Siouxsie version is just awesome.

1. The Leningrad Cowboys are pretty good, but I especially like Gimme All Your Lovin', originally by ZZ Top
2. Johnny Cash - Cat's in the Cradle, originally by Harry Chapin

I'm an oldies rock fan (Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Pearl Jam anyone?) and so far, I've heard a lot of covers done for Pink Floyd's "Brick In The Wall", arguably their most recognized single. From all the covers done by various artistes, I have to say that the ones done by KoRn and Pearl Jam are the best.
KoRn instilled their own flavor into the cult classic with Jon Davis' voice-blasting and Fieldy's unique bass. How I'd wish KoRn can re-emulate their enormous success on "Follow The Leader" album. Pearl Jam is one of the original grunge rock bands that can go head-to-head with Nirvana during their prime. With their exceptional grunge-style rock, they give a new look to the rock classic that became a household name in every rockers' CDs.

Even though the No Doubt cover for "It's my life" is quite good, I still prefer the original by Talk Talk.
And for a weird covers:
Burning Down the House, an original by Talking Heads, covered by Tom Jones and The Cardigans
Bizarre Love Triangle, originally from New Order, covered by Frente!
Pet Shop Boys has made some weird ones too: covered Elvis' "You were always on my mind" and a u2/Franki Vallie mix of "Where the streets have no name/can't take my eyes off of you". The only one that made sense was them covering Village People's "Go West" since well... both bands are gay... literally.

I really like Tori Amos' cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The polar opposite in style to Nirvana's, but it's still got the emo. Plus, she's got one of the damn prettiest voices I've ever head.
But my favorite cover has to be UB40's take on Elvis' "Can't Help Falling in Love". So, so good.

You know, I loved the Petshop versions of 'You are always on my mind' and 'Where the streets have no name/can't take my eyes off of you'. But then, I also really liked their cover of 'Boys and Girls' by Blur.
Dude niner...Tori Amos isn't emo, she predates it. And Nirvana is pure grunge, not emo at all. WTF is with people not knowing the difference between emo and old fashioned angst?
And since when is Pearl Jam 'old'? They were popular when I was in highschool. Unless I'm just old and don't know it.
Speaking of weird covers, I know a lot of people love the version of 'Mad World' from Donnie Darko, but I have always vastly prefered the original Tears for Fears version.

Amen to that. Those synths gave the song a very eerie atmosphere and by going unplugged in the cover, it took that charm away from it. In fact, Tears for fears remains as one of the top 10 acts in pop for the '80s as far as I'm concerned. They did it with wit and style.
As to what is old.. well... for me would be anything predating 1980. Nirvana and Pearl Jam as far as I know are quite modern.

Guess they're not that old; I just said it because they just seemed like it, especially after seeing how many artistes are popping up the airwaves these days. It's just an issue of perception, I guess. Professor Liegy, you're NOT old, just to set the record straight. Age is never an issue to me, and when I said "Pearl Jam is an oldie", I will never mean it in a bad way - NEVER. I worship them, man...
Back to the real agenda: 5ive (I think they've disbanded) did a cover on Queen's "We Will Rock You" and I gotta say, they did rather well. They put in some punk attitude and angst that most boybands, and music shows that Brian May still has it. I find this hard to admit, considering that boybands aren't my cup of tea.
