View Full Version : So how did everyone come across the A.A?

I bought the 4th volume of Cowboy Bebop in mid February this year and on the inside of the cover it was advertising a DVD with a cool looking person on the front with a bass: FLCL.

I went on the net to find info and came across the review, then spent the next two weeks reading the entire library. Only then did I click on the “lounge” button and find out that there were forums.

Found Kain drunk in a bar and he started rambling about this project of his. He pretty much told me he intended to become a demigod among people who worship anime, or something like that ;)

Already have. I asked him once exactly what was going through his head at the time, and why he did it. Said he forgot. o_O Kuzu, you should be ashamed.

Anyway, I happened upon this site last September when looking for info on a gundam series (didn't find it), but joined up anyway. That's bascially it.

Quite short story.

I used to check www.furikuri.com relatively often, and they had a link to AA's review of FLCL. I once decided to click on it and as they say, the rest is history

Well... I was introduced to the Anime Academy by a friend... Alex San Lyra... he had read a lot of reviews from AA and one day I went to his house to draw and watch anime and he showed me the site and the forum. I thought it would be cool to join in and so I did!

Was on an IRC channel (forget which one), then someone in the channel posted an AA forum thread. The End.

A friend in college had told me of the site. I joined about a week or two before Professor Griveton went on hiatus and the Staff position contest began.

Back when Anime Academy was Anime Compendium, my acquaintance, Majin Gohan (a.k.a. Keitaro), would occasionally mention to me how he had joined an all-purpose anime site following a failed attempt at a little project called DBZ-Nation. Eventually I would wander into the site, post maybe twice on the forums (oh god, the question I asked… it’s really quite disgusting), then that would be the end of it. While browsing the Bid for Power forums I noticed there was a post by Kain in the anime discussion board. Now, Kain was a mod on the boards from at least until Nov 2000 to at least April 2001 (in fact he and Kjel gave me quite the hazing when I became a mod…), and he hadn’t posted in a loooooooong time, so naturally I see a post from him and go !! I cant remember if his post was a promotion or a simple reply, but in his sig was a link to Anime Academy. At the time I knew next to squat about most anime, so when I joined the forums (as the first non-staffer, mind you :p) it was more like a third or fourth place to talk with the same old people (the boards were, effectively, Bid For Power Forums Clone #4 for a while). However, the chat room was full of people I didn’t know inside-out already, so I stuck around. And that is my gallant tale. FEAR!

Well i was out searching for more random pointless and completely meaningless sites for Kenshin (not that i dont have like 50 allready) when I came upon the AA on google. I entered and read the good the bad and the ugly of the library while spending a good part of the week trying to figure out what the holy fuzziness of old apples this was! Clicked on lounge and had fun annoying people with random pointlessness.......i mean talking about anime.........yes...........of course......

I was looking for some good animé to watch, but couldn't really find any synopsis on some things, so I did a search and this site came up, and then I found out about the Academy part, and I was in.

Many a year ago, I was continually threatened by a creepy dead friend of mine to the old Compendium site. So I've been coming here for reviews for a long time but it never dawned on me to join the forums until a month or two ago. Ah, dear Corpse. :bowing

I originally just came because I was looking for either FF MIDI's to download and make fun at or just looking for anime reviews....I don't really remember. I think I did come because I was looking for reviews, and this site was one of the first to come up. The first time I read through the reviews, I was stunned at the layout and the professionalism of the staff, so I started to often come and read the reveiws. A couple of times I clicked on the lounge link, I wasnt too interested. Finallly, I signed up and here I am!

I learned about this place through Ritalin and Sweet Sharie who were both friends of mine though a different site. I wandered through the library and stuffs but was reluctant to join the forums because I didn't even know what forums were....
Eventually I met enough people at teh site who talked (dragged) e into joining, and I've been here ever since, for the most part.

Stumbled across the library after I stumbled across lain dvd 1, and was considering if I sould continue on with it. Started using the library pretty often.

THen after finishing Rahxephon, I was confused about certain things, and so decided to give the forum a try,and found a like that answered my question. After that I just never left. everybody was pretty cool to a newbie like me, and all that, so I stuck around.

I don't really remember how I came across Anime Academy, I was looking for some info on EVa... or maby Cowboy Bebop... I DO know, however, that I spent some time visiting it before I noticed there was a forum. At first I thought it was only a great place to se some decent reviews.

After one month or so of review seeing I had seen them all and was a bit sad that I had to wait for the next news update to see a new one. It was at that time that I started to look further into the site and notice the forum thingie... yes, I know, I'm blind, after all it's right there in front of me.

In any case, there you have it...

Here is my story gentle beings, get a beer and read if you wish:

I bought Quake 3 off ebay and enjoyed the game much, i talked about it alot but i found the game empty due to ym poor connection so hereing about these thigns called ''mods'' and ''tc's'' i looked for said things.

After looking for Quake 3 mods i found Bid for Power at a relatively early stage. bid for Power was a DBZ orientated Quake 3 conversion, at the time anyway. I was amazed by the pretty beam affects they seemed to have, i heard it was about a thing called DBZ, watched a bit of that, enjoyed the first two seasons as thats all they showed at the time. I realised i ahd seen this style thing before, and soon realised that this crazy stuf was not actualy american but those insane japanese cartoons i had liked to watch.

When BfP didn't seem to ever be released i couldn't be assed to hang about so looked at other stuff.

Some time later i found a Bfp RC3 d/l with some friends at an ez board, got it, me and my friends then went into a nice little BfP stage where we even set up a damn popular ez board for a time, god knows whats happened to it now, they were the brains, for information purposes I went on the BfP site.

After about 3 months i realised there were a forums and i joined under the genius alias Akuman. *note* You must realise i had probably been browsing the Bid for power site for about 2 or 3 years almost daily before my break from it due to non-release, how i never saw the forum i am amazed. */note*

By the time i had joined the forums and come back to the Bid For Power site i was at the stage of detesting the new DBZ so i was ok about the non-dbz'ness.

Joined forum, didn't like it. About 4 days after i joined BfP i was browsing the anime section and saw a thread/advert about AA, this seemed good, i heard that it was full of a bunch of cool people but would probably flame, bash and ban me if i liked DBZ, so i entered, impressed by this anti-dbz approach as i decided that everything past the Frieza bit suced much ass.

Went there, joined the forums, made a thread about anime movies, which you can still find under ''Fave Anime Movie'' i think. In the misc forum I had a nice little punk talk with Inferno Jolted (Ritalin) in a thread called ''Local Bands'' i beleive, where i used excessive bold and large font.

In this thread i talked about the song All - She Broke My ****, pf-chan goes ''Hey you sexy son of a gun would you mind sending me this song, I'm sure you'll get sex0r.'' sadly sex0r never came, or maybe that was just my imagination, but i sent her the song. At this time a lovely chap named PSJ also asked me to send him this cheerys ong about breakage of the penis, so i did, i am sure someone else asked me to send so i did.

I started talking to PSJ and Inferno on msn after they added me to there dealies, me being to frightened to do anything for fear of rejection.

After much talking and attempting to make friends i decided i liked it here, stayed around, started talking to a select few people.

I spamed my way, mostly, to 1000 posts in about 7 months, went on IRC, got banned, went on IRC, got banned, this continued for a long time until i just got banned.

I soon grew into the godly person i am now with countless females wanting me and such.

This is the story of Yurika Star aka. Yuri aka. Brit-f00 aka. Die you mutha ****er get banned mutha ****er aka. Someone who pissed a certain mod off a bit and doesnt care.

I do hope you enjoyed my story of heroism and jolly times, i beg your pardon for i am now sighning on to msn to speak to my homies.

I wandered over to the Anime Academy from a link at some crappy forum I don't go to any more. I arrived just a little before the last forum explosion and I've been here ever since. Oh yea I hang out in the chat room quite a bit.

And well I'm sure you found that very boring. I don't blame you, I would have found it boring as well.

Kain, Mugs, Corpse, Kei, Kj, Jagan, Strife, Keitaro, Mandrake, etc all begged me to come.

I wasn't going to, but when you have so many people begging you, it's hard to say no. Must be because I'm such a nice and considerate person, hell, even Yurika star likes me, and I'm sure I forgot to unban him a few weeks ago.

Everyone likes me, I bet if i wasn't here, I'd have Omae...Harlock..a bunch of people just bugging me, all the time, about it.

So ends my elaborate web of lies.

(I came to AC to find out wtf a Kain was, according to mugs, he was some weird guy. After a few days...like...1-2 weeks on AC, AA came up and I decided to register like....a day or 2 after)

Whilst engaging in a heated philosophical debate with my good friend Biku regarding the dietary habits of a pack of hamsters, he linked me to a riveting piece he'd written, a review of a video game that he'd posted on none other than Anime Academy Lounge. Imploring my critique of his literary work, he unwittingly caused me to take up residence here, much to his chagrin, I'm sure.

God knows why he posted a game review on an anime board. What a dumbass.

You can blame MP3 on this. I was searching for a certain title(forgot) when I saw the link in AA. I realized that AA circulates the titles of pretty good songs so I usually used to hang out in the main page(only ~.~). Gradually, I started to reading the reviews and started frequenting the site. One fine day, after a few months(last year), I finally saw something which I wonder why I didn't see it before... the Lounge link:p . Upon clicking it, I was introduced to my first forum(no longer a virgin:D ). The moment I registered, I stepped in the Velcro AA welcome mat and haven't been able to free myself since.

Like most of us, looking for anime/info reviews sometimes last autumn when I started getting into this wonderful world of anime.
I didn't join this forum until late february 2003 though...I didn't even know this forum exists until around late january 2003, and when I noticed it, first I just kept looking through what's going on, not really feeling like joining in. Then one day I just decided to join after all, and see if I'd have anything to say to whatever is being discussed here for the moment. That's it.

Oh yes...I seem to recall that just out of a coincidence, both me and my friend themacaque found this site unaware of each other's actions at about the same time...
Also, coincidentially we joined the forums one day apart :) also unaware of each other's actions...

Hehe, and I didn't even refer you to the site. I remember logging on only to find this mysterious Zee'd person posting on AA, and thought to myself that nick is familiar, after a few PMs realized it was you. There were quite a few Animecha (the anime/LAN store I work at) people on AA, at one stage. Now it's basically you and me left.

As for me, I was bored browsing the net one night, found AA in it's fledgling stages, utilized the library for a few weeks, browsed the forums for a while, then decided to sign up. The rest is history.

As for me, I was doing a Google search for the name of an anime i couldn't remember (Saishu-heiki Kanjono) and looked for links to a site that had the name.... low and behold I found AA and the anime I was looking for. I searched the Library for an hour or two agreeing and disagreeing with some of the reviews along the way. After tiring of that I went to the forums, browsed a bit and decided to sign up cus this seemed to be (and is) the best anime forum and library I have found out there. Hooray for AA

a friend of mine told me about the review site, and i happened upon the discussion board shortly thereafter. at the time, i was working 16 hours a day, and didn't have much of a life, so i became very involved online. lately, things have eased up a bit, and it seems like there have been fewer philosophical threads, so i've become less involved here, and my post count has not been rising very steadily. even so, i'm here almost every day, and i still watch a buttload of anime. what's funny, is i can't get the friend who told me about AA to post on the lounge. people are different, no?

I've really only been into anime for maybe a year and a half or so thanks to Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. After seeing the final episode of Wolf's Rain last night yet again, I started wondering if that really was it, so I searched on google for info about the final episode and this site came up in the links. I checked it out, liked what I saw, and joined up, so here I am. :-) I've only seen what Adult Swim shows so far, with the exception of the InuYasha fansubs of the entire series and the first 3 movies. I haven't made my way through the entire series yet, so don't spoil anything for me, hehe. ;-) I'm trying to catch up with reading the translated manga online too, since I hear the story has a slightly different spin in manga form and also the story continues beyond the animation. Actually, my first introduction to anime (and actually liking it) was FLCL. I didn't know wtf it was but I was strangely drawn to watch it until I couldn't get enough of it! I still don't know why I liked it but it's so weird you gotta love it I guess, LOL. Anyway, I guess I still feel fairly new to this stuff so I'm just looking to expand my horizons and get to know some people here. :-) I hope I didn't go way off topic here, just getting my feet wet since this is my first post, LOL. :-)

Welcome.. welcome... Hope you have a nice stay here in AA...

But the surprising thing (and the main reason why I made this post) is the fact that you started anime with FLCL... it is one of the TOP few animes recommended NOT for people new to japanese animation....

Oh, and you might want to read through the FAQ a bit, just in case...

Thanks Zee'd! LOL yeah, I'm known for doing things the non-traditional way. ;-) Actually I had no idea why I wanted to watch it, I was convinced I hated anime, but I felt like it was hypnotizing me, haha. I like things that are strange and unusual so maybe that was it. Well I don't know what it was but I'm glad it got me into it because I'm enjoying getting into new things. :-)

I only recently came across the forum, but I've been using this site for ages to gauge whether anime is worth buying. Simply because I'm cheap.

I got into anime when I was six or so, watching old DBZ episodes.

Great site! I'm on an AnimExpo mailing list, got a recoomendation to Anime Academy Radio (an internet streaming radio station), and did a search on anime academy, out of curiosity.

I've loved anime for some 26 years, from way back, when viewings were few and far between...

After a while away, doing the family thing, I'm back, with a young crowd of new anime fans in my wake (mom of five kids plus my "net kids"), to find the anime culture incredibly increased, and finally gaining legitimacy in this country (USA). About time!

For myself, a deep story, memorable and moving characters and great music are the big draws. I'm looking forward to making a lot of wonderful discoveries here! Reviews will be so helpful, thaks for being here!

Well, my first post outside of the general discussion bit! How long have I been here.....?

Anyway, back in March/April of 2003, I was looking around for info on anime. I had recently poured a lot of money into one of my all time favourites series (Robotech), and it had dawned on me that the origins of Robotech was in anime.

I already knew what anime was, I was a fan of it already, but prior to that anime was a) rarer than hens teeth in my part of the world, it was a real luxury to be able to see some b) being a poor student for much of my life meant I couldn't afford things that I couldn't find, and c)even if I knew where to get stuff on the internet, it would take forever and a bit for my connection to download a single episode.

In anycase, one of my friends said, after seeing that I was investing in Robotech, suggested that I see Cowboy Bebop, cause I might like it. So I went down to Shin Tokyo, the shop i had purchased some of my Robotech boxes from, because I had seen Cowboy Bebop there, bought the first disc, and like it I did. But more so, they had trailers for more anime, and I discovered that anime is no longer more precious that 24 carat diamonds, it now commonly available!

Of course, when looking at trailers, they try their best to make the series look good, and I didn't want to pour money into something I wouldn't like (although that is somethimes inevitable....) so I hopped on the net, and did some searching for some of the series (it was Chobits, or FLCL, or something like that) and came across the Anime Acadmey. It was a swanky looking site, and had a rather large review library often with reviews by more than one reviewer, so I bookmarked the page, and it became my number 1 reference site when researching anime I was looking to buy.

Some months later, I was perusing the forums (I had discovered their existance some time after I found the site, and they had some interesting discussion there, but I didn't frequent that often), and found something that I simply had to reply to (I can't find my first post.....and I can't remember what it was now), so I joined up, and here I am today.

I have referred some of my friends...Staker, who posts infrequently, and Localised Pain, who left because he couldn't start enough fights.

Thsi was my first forum, and it started me into the forum world. Not that I'm a forum whore....I don't belong to that many. I signed up for BBAkira, but I haven't been to that one in months, I did sign up to AMG reviews, but I always had problems with my account, so I left it for a while, and now I can't log in at all, and I currently belong to the Red Orchestra Forums, and the TrueCombat: Elite forums.

My story is different than most. I had to do a project for art, and i picked animation to do my project on. After getting done with clay animation and all that what not, i finally got to do what i was waiting for JAPANESE ANIMATION. I begun to search for reviews on some awesome anime and stumbled upon this, yes while in school. Clicked on the site, and came to it once a day at school. Eventually i was wondering how to become a member of the "academy" and i finally found out that the louge was the place to be. It was my first forum, but yet it was about anime..so i said hey why not join? I joined got everyone pissed at me for spamming, escially LadySage, and got a freaking D on my project. So yeah, me finding anime academy is as random as, the priesident picking his nose on tv. That tis my tale, it is not as good as Jay's but hey i qualify...

When I first came across this site, I was just looking for something to do and was just playing around. But once I signed up and got in, I realized that, due to my lack of knowledge and experience with different anime shows, I could learn alot about different animes and try and see if I would fit in here. Compared with the rest of the world. Back in march I finally able to afford some of the animed OVA's and show that I have been hearing about, so far I agree with a lot of the things that people are saying about the shows like Chrono Crusade, Hana Yori Dango, Angelic Layer.

This place is a good idea for ideas.

Well, since none of my friends are really into anime like I am, and I love message boards in general, I kept my eye out for a good one concerning anime, logically. I almost settled down in the AnimeSuki forums, and there's a small chance I might in the future, but before then, I discovered Anime Academy.

First, I came across just the reviews. I loved them to death, and I found them much more rational than other review sites like THEM, and their library was of a decent size. While their reviews weren't quite up to par with a few others I've found here and there, I loved them for their general consistency and style.

I soon found the forums, in which I posted like twice then lurked for awhile. The fact that most of the frequent posters knew how to spell highly appealed to me. I also thought TIF was totally awesome, so eventually, I registered an account and joined in.

It was back a while ago when I actually found the website. From what I remember I had read anime reviews on a previous site, and I wondered if there were other websites like that one which also reviewed anime. After searching I came across anime academy and read over the reviews for some anime that I have seen and was judging on seeing. Err... it's a little bit lengthy, but I'll try to make it short. It was a not very nice day, and I was chasing after a shinigami-wannabe, then suddenly he unleashed his Bankai. I was caught off-guard, thinking that how could a lousy orange-haired brat who can't even lead a shitty shonen show right ever learn to achieve such a nonsense technique... anyway, when I come to my senses, I found myself in front of this Academy. Oh, did I mention that his Bankai has the form of a hairless monkey? In short, I wanted to find an anime forum to express my thoughts about how sucky Bleach is. I'm also seeking some comrades to assist me in my plan to nuke Studio Pierrot.

I try to locate as many anime review sites as possible for different opinions on an anime I'm interested in seeing, or in some cases I'm curious how others felt about a particular anime. I stumbled into Anime Academy after searching for links on a particular anime (don't remember which one) and got a match that led me here. Of course, I never even checked out the forums till last year, around August I believe. My mainstays before AA were The Anime Review, THEM Anime, The Anime Critic, Anime Jump, and Anime World. Oh, and Rossman is the besht with reviews (google please, and try Macross: Do You Remember Love? for the best results!).

I'd say it was 2003-2004ish when I was just reading the reviews on this site everytime they popped up. Some I agreed with, others were close, and others I had my own differentiating thoughts on (the beauty of an opinion!). After years of surfing through all the reviews time and again, and watching loads of anime and forming my own opinions, I finally had my opportunity to go to a Con (Animefest 2006). After the convention, and meeting some folks, it dawned on me that there could be a community for discussing anime fascinations here and there. I never participated in message boards before I went on this one, I usually stuck to my close network of friends and kept to myself, but around August of 2006 I chose to peek in here. Then I decided to just be a member and start talking, hoping somebody would know where I was coming from with my interests, or hope to at least carry up some worthy conversation.

And I still clench my fist when I think of Favorite Anime Directors, my personal favorite thread, and first passion to the forums!

Dumb Facts: My lame website The Anime Players (www.theanimeplayers.com) was supposed to be cancelled since last month, but it's still up, and the message boards look like hell. Don't read them! xD

I live with my friend (and webmaster of my former site The Anime Players) Tlan, he's damn good looking, and taught me all about cool shit like Berserk and BECK. He also kicks my ass in almost every video game known to man.

My sister and her little friends were on it one day. Then, for a while, I just lurked about for the longest of times, reading random things here and here. Then I went ahead and created an account. Yeah, woooah. Epic, I knoooow.

I enjoy looking for different review sites to look at different ways to review anime and this site was one that I really liked. What was really dense of me was not noticing for a while that there was a forum here. Be in awe of my observation skills.

A fellow anime fan and buddy of mine in highschool was checking the site out during a break, and I- curious- started looking at A.A. myself. I've checked the site itself since 2004 or so, and just now decided to join the forum.

I got here in a Google search for anime reviews. Then, I decided to join the forum in order to discuss anime.

Hentai?

Actually, I don't really remember. It's been years since I found this site. Maybe it was a nasty mind that led me here.

This has probably gotta count as the weirdest ever.....While researching a paper (which I got an F on:eyebrow: ) I found a book of essays about anime called Cinema Anime. One of the essays was about the interesting cross-cultural impact of anime fandom, and Anime Academy was mentioned and cited, so I typed in the URL and boom! here i am.

This is true, but "Nomadic Yak Herders Academy" just didn't roll off the tongue quite as well, so they handed the reigns over to us.

But I found AA in Newtype USA. I laughed because they switched the pictures for AA and Gaia.

Ok, well AC stood for Anime Compendium. It was the brain child of Kain and it spawned from members of the Bid For Power forum. AC took a break and when Kain got back AA was born.

And hey! Nobody commented on the fact that its even in there. That's pretty impressive, not every site strolls on into that magazine.

AA FTW!

True.
I just found it really funny seeing Gaia's original bright pink-and-white layout being confused with the very blue Anime Academy.

Sort of off topic, but are you subscribed to Newtype?

I dunno... I've bought individual issues here and there, but the 90$/year seems kinda steep -_-

What?! $90? That's retarded! A yearly subscription to Shounen Jump's only a third of that!

Call me crazy, but I can find far more satisfaction from following Luffy or Naruto's adventures than from reading two month-old news. Then again, you can also "acquire" Jump's mangas on the internet, though it's not easy on the eyes to stick them to the computer screen like that.

Damn, I haven't posted in here yet? I could've sworn I already had, like 3 years ago or something.

Oh, well. I was looking for information on the anime Hand Maid May, of which I'd seen a few clips somewhere, and ended up at the review page for it here. Noticed there was a forum not long after, and badda bing, badda boom, here I am. Just like dozens of others' stories, I'm sure.
