Who are, in your opinion, the coolest, darkest, or most hated villians in video games, according to the genre, and why?

First Person shooter - SHODAN AI (System Shock series) For me, a no-brainer. SHODAN is, unlike any other antagonist, always with you, giving you a good reason to kill her. She is manipulating you, hating you, attacking you... and loving you, and fearing you. She wants you, dead or alive. I remember when I was about to blow a computer... she asked me not to. Se told me she didn't want me to do that, that if i did that, she would kill me. I did it. She was sad. And she sent a couple 'droids to do what she said...

RPG - SHODAN AI/XERXES (System Shock 2) Reasons stated above.

Adventure - LeChuck (Monkey Island) Just because Guybrush and the fat-intake-watching cannibals say so.

Strategy - The beast (homeworld cataclysm) A spacial race that thrives on eating the other races, her womanlike talks and droney voice are... just from another world...

Side Scroller - Bowser (Mario Bros) I have to say this guy. I grew up with him...

SEPHIROTH!!

This guy was evil, he had presence, and you just loved to hate him. Plus he had a cool sword and that trenchcoat cossie. He was a complete nut and had all the moves :D

i dont know. i really liked Kuja. he has alot of depth, you can sympathize with him. Sephiroth had the "im crazy, im powerful, fear me." thing going but i liked Kuja better. But kuja's outfit was so....wrong...no man should wear leather undies out in public.

My favorite videogame villian is Magus. Hes just so cool. Super strong and cool looking magic, a scary smile (from the PS version cut-scenes), and a scythe. how much cooler can you get?

I agree with Griveton on the adventure villain part, Lechuck is great :D Who else would use a flaming voodoo cannonball to show someone how much he truly cares ^_^"

By Genre:

FPS: Trevylan from Goldeneye, just for the line "Why won't you be a good boy and die James".

RPG: Magus. Just so slick looking.

Adventure (all): game designers of the Zork series... curse them all, so diffulcult to bear

Adventure (beatable ones): LeChuck the walking Villain Parody

Strategy: the Tarrasque in Star Craft. that was one buff MF.

Side Scroller: hmm... the guy from sonic whose name escapes me at the minute. he had such cool robots.

Curses! Beaten to the good ones again. I have to agree with Sephiroth and Kefka as my favorite FF villains and I'll put in my vote for best recurring villain for the ghost-zombie-demon pirate LeChuck.

Hey, LOOK! A Three-Headed MONKEY!

vashthestampede

Easy. All time best villain was Sephiroth. He had no emotions but hate. He was the most unstable enemy of them all, and when you think about it, his ideas make sense in a strange sort of way... Or i'm evil, you take your pick!

Fash

damnm, seph is so cliche!

Oh, pure hate, woe is me woe is me!

Damn, thats so passe. Its all about Kefka's complete maniacy at the least.

Or even seifer was better, seph is just so damn boring, predictible.

Astribulus

Sephiroth's personality may be cliche, but I really like the look and the sword. Kefka's maniacy is a much better motivation.

Never seen sephiroth, but from your description... that's a pretty crappy cliché character.

I like antagonists rather than enemies, since an enemy does not impulse your feelings, except hate.

a good antagonist, on the other hand, can draw your interest, and sometimes even your simpathy or love.

LeChuck made you laugh, and sometimes understand his desperation (Who hasn't been trying to do everything in this world and the afterworld to try to gain the love of another person?) SHODAN could be understood, and since it was a computer AI, had an empathical connection to your computer... while still fearing her, and hating her...

An enemy that only provokes you hate is, in my opinion, a run-of-the-mill one, since hate is really easy to provoke. The rest of the emotions are, however, harder, and making someone feel for the enemy is even harder than hard.

True that.. or use a flaming Voodoo cannonball to show how much he truely cares.
And you also almost felt sorry for him when you made him sniffle during all that talking towards the end of MI3 (where Guybrush's a bit locked up ^.^)

Ur? Let's see.....u.u

Fighting Game:4 WAY TIE!
1.Krizalid from King of Fighters '99 ((Loved the outfit))/
2.Jedah from Darkstalkers 3. This guy was just awesome! XD He'd mutilate himself just to massacre you then proceed to give you some melodramatic quote/
3.Dio Brando ((My favorite! =B)) from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure ((Who wouldn't have wanted to crush this guy...he killed half of the main characters off. x.x; "That's right...my power is to freeze time! My World rules the world if you get my drift!))....Then he would just drop a steam roller on you and proceed to punch his way through it...just so he could smack you around some more. x.x;
4.Hyo from Rival Schools. He was so kewl! =B

RPG:Luca Blight from Suikoden 2. You know your a bad man when you can shake off the six arrows sticking out of your back...crush your way through three parties of six characters a piece...and then fight the main character in a one on one sword duel.
Yamaneko takes second place with the Elements from Xenogears just slightly behind.

Finally...Just about all the villains in the Super Robot Wars series! XD I grew up watching these guys get wasted in the mech shows...now I get my turn to do much of the same!

That was what made me hate him.

On higher diff. levels, the guy just kept doing that, and it was only raw trial and error to time your attack right... and then, I only found an attack that could get him with K' and Terry....

In standard diff, I also pummeled the idiot with King and the kid in blue... the one whoe ate rice... i forgot the name...

And strikers... I used them a lot. Especially mary, just to disbalance the enemy and/or lower the guard or buy me time to make the ultra-almighty-continuous-superpower-machinegun crap of K'.

BTW- My usual team was:
K'
King
The kid in blue

Striker : Mary

My usual team was:

1)Kyo:I loved his special attacks...but for some reason or another I would switch him on and off the team to use Shingo! XD
2)Terry:He was just a good all around fighter. o.o
3)Joe:Had some rather fluid moves. Came in handy when I needed a character with quick movements that could do moderate damage.
Striker:One of the Kyo clones, King, or Iori. Not sure why. o.o;

The kid in blue was Kensou. ^^ King of the Slackers.

My usual KOF97 team is : King: double venom strike, trap shot, surprise vault, hahaha.. all handy if you know how and when to use them :D ; Terry: like Bread-san said, handy allround character. (and Lightning tackle those jumping freaks out of the sky) ; Yuri: fast, quite powerful, uber kawaiiness.. what more does one want in a character ^.^

Some more characters to add on my favorites list:

Starman-Since I loved Earthbound that much! ^^

Star Wolf Team-I played Star Fox 64 until my fingers were blistered, then I played some more. The Wolf Team was amazing in the fact that they could be either:
A)Stupidly Easy
B)Ridiculously Difficult
C)Unshakingly annoying
Besides...Pigma Dengar was just so cool. =B Loved the Wolfen ships

and finally...the most kawaii baddies ever
THE SHY GUYS! ^^
Anyone see General Shy in Paper Mario...now that was just precious. ^^

Kefka!!!

The single most insane, sadistic, and downright rottenest villain of all time. He has no need for clever plans and slick entrances, he just comes and controls!!! I don't remember any other villain who ever was such an insane baby, swore off the hook, killed all his "allies", destroyed the world, laughed about it, and was still able to be beaten ;)

Sephiroth was cool too. FF7's cloud vs Seph duel at the end was the perfect closure ending :GD

My favorite villain?

If Kula Diamond counts, then she's my favorite villain.

Although, poor misguided Krizalid was pretty cool as well. He thought K' was the clone, when in fact he was the clone.

But if Kula doesn't count, then I'd have to say either Goenitz, Geese or the entire Orochi New Face Team. Chris, Shermie and Yashiro = kickass.

Most Funniest: Kefka of FF6, "I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate....you!" He's just damn hillarious...period.

well, since Mother Brain was only in 2 of the Metroid games, obviously she isnt the main baddie in all of them. Ridley, on the other hand, appeared in 4(i believe) Metroid games and is more of a symbol of the series than MB, though you gotta admit, her final form in Super Metroid was pretty bad@$$.

hmm, im guessing youre refering to the Hyper Beam attack MB uses when you fight her... well, thats supposed to happen. youre supposed to get hit with that and have like 40 energy left. energy is never a problem in Super Metroid cuz i always get all energy and reserve tanks.

Albert Wesker. It's so rare that games feature a villain that is collected, ruthless, selfish, capable, and stylish, and who is evil because of lack of social morals. There have been too many attempts to create villains who are evil for some past trauma, misguided ideology, or are evil as a result of insanity. The truly evil villains--not as in a villain that is, for lack of a better word, The Force of Evil--, despite the constant denouncement of gaming communities as cliche, are actually a rare breed.

I have to agree with you on this. Seriously now that I look at it, most of the villains that come to be these days are only ruthless because of some past trauma and aren't very collected like Wesker. Though there are some exceptions(Sephi from FF7 and I believe Kuja from FF9) many fall into this category.

Well Kefka was good, but not good enough (and FF6 is my favorite of the series) but the guy that has been mentioned to death already really deserves the title of best video game villain: the one and only Sephiroth! Visually a stunning presence and with such a complex personality, there were many that were more into FF7 because of him and not because of Cloud and the gang! Sephiroth is so huge, that a friend from Ecuador in South America knew a lot about him without having to play the game!

Oh...and I'd also like to mention Donkey Kong! He even ended up being being a violent old ape. He'll die as a monument, and I'm sure Mario still must have some of his barrel marks scared on to his paisano skin :P

Wesker(Resident Evil) as aforementioned on this page is quite the bad ass villain. Very cool, collected and most of all, has everything thought out much longer than you'd think.

Also, Darth Revan(Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic). I cannot say why, but those who've beaten the game know why. Oh yes.

Dr. Wily from the classic Mega Man games, that guy trys so hard to defeat Mega Man. I mean, look at how many robots he's built to keep the Blue Bomber busy!

And let's not forget all those castles he's built too! :D (all of them destroyed lovingly)

I'm gonna go with the Queen of Blade Sarah Kerrigan from Star Craft: Brood Wars. She was just something else. Completely different from anything I'd seen before. Although for a classic villain, you just can't beat Bowser, he's the man! (or lizard or dragon if you want to get technical on me)

Oh... I just remembered who Albert Wesker is! He's an awsome and complex villain and very original yet believable by today's standards (if you get passed the coming back to life thing)!

And if I said DK, I can't believe I didn't mention BOWSER!!! He's the real reason why Super Mario Bros. 2 flopped!

Rugal from KOF. But then again, all bosses suffer from that damn SNK Boss Syndrome >.>

Also Morganna from the .hack series. Though it started out with the /SIGN anime, her villaness doesn't get any complicated than any other villan in that series.... and if anyone says Tri Edge.. I'll /kill/ you.

i would have to agree with Wesker being a complete badass.....especially when he appeared in Code Veronica........but my favorite villain was definitely Vergil from Dmc just because...well he's Vergil what more can i say really?

Oh god... don't make me pick!! (cause, clearly, someone is holding a gun to my head and forcing me to procratinate in forums rather than get my paper done).

Okay, here goes:
The clear top three choices are:

Sephiroth from FF7 (because, oedipus complex and destroy world tendencies aside, we can't help but want to be him)

Kefka from FF6 (because they finally understood that clown are scary and make cool villains, especially when they can laugh while poisoning entire towns)

Graph from Xenogears (questionably a villain, but still, if only because he had the coolest recurring speeches and a very awesome theme song)

Honorable mentions go to:
Iori from King of Fighters (questionably a villain, though he was in the first games), Bowser from Mario (obviously), and Dr. Robotnik from Sonic (probably misspelled but meh!)

EDIT: Has no one else really mentioned anyone from Xenogears?!?! *shock* (if you did and I missed it, sorry!)
