Hi guys, i've been away for ages, but im back...not that you'd remember :p

I've heard a bit about fruit baskets, and for some reason, the concept of chinese starsign transformation really appeals to me......

i haven't seen any previews just pictures.

The thing is, i live in Australia..... and to get a copy of the first 6 episodes, i have to pay $90!!!!!! (3x what i'd pay for anime dvd's available here)....

so i was wondering who's seen it and if they'd recommend it as a good show.

I like comedy/drama type anime (FLCL, Kare Kano, Love Hina), and it sounded very much up my alley.

So if anyone could sway me this way or that, i'd much appreciate it.

Arigato!!! :D

I heard about this cool site called Anime Academy that reviews anime. I think they had a review for it there, let me check.

~Kei HAHAHAHAHahhahahaha........... talk about sarcasm

fruit basket is actually quite good, but it is more relationship comedy than anything else......

got some thought provoking scenes (that sometimes break the flow, but yet seems appropriate)

definately a good buy

Great sarcasm Kei, I hope you didnt make the guy feel stupid, unless that was your intent.

Yeah it really is a great anime and the review(s) were good you should go by them, most reviews here are really accurate.

Yeah I know he isnt mean. He is one of the coolest and most accurate reviewers a AA (no offence to anyone else).

Back on topic: It really is a great anime, I dont know for what price though, I dont know how much I would be willing to spend personaly, but you should really look into it.

*laughs* Try and get it! ^^ It's really a great show. And, unlike most shoujos, you spend a lot of your time rooting for the main female, because she's just so... hard not to like. The intense story-line(and nicely executed humor) draws you in and leaves you wishing for more and more. ^^ Shini definately recommends it! And if you like comedy and drama? ^^ Make that the first on your list.

Thanks to all, and, um... yeah, you to Kei.....

Nah!! Its all good!!!!

:p

Your decisions really helped me cement my decision, and im definately ordering the first DVD this afternoon.

P.S i had read the review, but wanted to consult the student body..... Thinking a series is good, is a subjective decision, and i needed more than one or two.

P.P.S I'm well aware of the cool Library and Lecture sections of the academy, they rule.

hehe, Sweet Sharie is still here !!:D

Kei, Kei, Kei, I thought you of all people could think of something more sarcastic than just THAT! I mean, the only people who will actually think it is witty are wild rhinos and Totoros!!

>_<.....as you can see, my attempts are humor are pathetic....sorry to Kei and all those I offended.....

Anyways, Fruits Basket is a wonderful anime. Most people I know are a bit turned off by the first few episodes, but once you get into it, you will surely like it. It has a lot of humor and drama, but most importantly (for me at least), its characterization is very deep. Most of the characters are very well-developed. The first 6 episodes may not worth $90, but the rest certainly does.

Just incase anybody was confused...its $90 australian..... meaning its around $45 american.

i usually pay around $30..... a DVD ($15).

Hey,
I have FB and I loved it. It was funny but serious at the same time. If you liked Love Hina then there's a chance that this will appeal to you as well. I loved the humor, it was crazy. I also liked the animation and characters as well. Very interesting story. I don't think you'll be disappointed. My word is go for it, I don't think you'll be upset.

JUjinkai_Lord,

I didn't know that FB was out in DVD here in Australia! I want to get the whole set! Did you get the dvd set in your local EB store? Or is it in like a proper anime store? We don't have much here in Brisbane :whine

Fruits Basket is great! Its definitely one of my favorite series. I like to pass around my first episode promotional disk to my friends. It's touching and funny, and then the last few minutes in that episode, will have you so hooked you won't be able to get away. :)

Hey Bubu...the only place i know of that you can get it is www.cartoongallery.com.au

like i said, its alot of money... + its a region 1 dvd, where as our players only play region 4 (pointless having different codes, why not just the one!!!) so unless you got a good player, you might wanna purchase the playstation 2 region cd...like i am from the same sight:D

that is of course, if you have a ps2?

hope the site helps anyway, let us know if you know any good sites in australia, where we can get much needed anime

HenyTran

I don't know if fruit baskets alone is worth going out of the way to get a different region dvd player. my recommendation is buying a region free dvd player or i'm sure there is a way to play it on your computer regardless of region. that way you can get any anime series you want and not worry about where its from. thats just an idea.

Fruits Basket is great!! I got a free promo DVD when I bought some anime at a store and I love it! I can watch it over and over and over, as long as I have a remote on hand to fastforward through the interviews and other stuff in between. I can't wait to get the real DVDs...
I also saw a couple episodes like in the middle of the series at my anime club. I just love the series. It has the perfect balance of humor, kawaiiness, and sadness.

you havent seen all it?!?! my god!! good lord!! ;-; ive seen the first 3 dvds (own them) & i bought them for about 45$ each *USD btw so spending this "$90" for it isnt that bad since its about the same

i got it from animenation.com and sadly they dont have vol 4 -.- 6 eps per dvd though, jap sub & va's too ^^ plus some good extras in jap XD

well the first ep is borin (intros mainly) til the end. id say i love ep 4 and the ones w/ hatsuharu & momiji. they crack me up.

its a cute drama (tohru puts so much drama into everything) and comedy. i dont really like tohru but i love the spice she adds to the anime with Ayame and Kyonkichi and Yuki

*kyonkichi = kyo (ayame calls him by that in the ep he debuts)

i'd recomend the 4th dvd vol as the best as it has kyo's "other form" being revealed. *grin* seen a smidge of it in screencaps, manga and my music vid i have on compy

It's not finished though. The ending I mean. It ended at the 6th volume and they just came out with the 14! Which is so not fair to people who don't read manga.

WHOA... ninety bucks is a lot of money to be spending on a 6 episode 1 to 2 DVD??? show.

However, I've seen the entire series of this anime and I found it quite charming and entertaining at the same time. There are great, memorable, cute, characters, complexity (had a load of simplicity as well), decent voice acting (can't really judge to any extent, so yeah), and I really liked the storyline dealing with the animals from the Zodiac. This is coming from a girl's perspective so you decide.

But one thing I can't stand about Honda Toru... SHE IS TOO DAMN NICE FOR HER OWN GOOD...!

True! And if you want to see more then I suggest picking up a copy of vol. 7 and keep reading till vol.14 cuz a HELL of a lot more happens. I don't even know why they only did half the series. Weird.

Sorry. It had to be done.

And for any Australians who are reading this thread, things have changed some since 2003.

Madman Entertainment (http://www.madman.com.au/actions/catalogue.do?releaseId=2322&method=view) Have released a R4 box set some years back now, and it only costs $80. And the original poster, well he must have done something horribly wrong. I've not ordered much from the US, but I've never paid AUD$90 for a single DVD, AUS$36, yes, but not AUS$90. He didn't put up any links, so I'm guessing he was looking at the complete box set anyways.

And for the Fruit's Basket manga, Madman (http://www.madman.com.au/actions/catalogue.do?releaseId=6753&method=view) are doing their own localised translation, with vol.20 coming up in September, for a cheaper price than what we'd normally pay for Tokyopop stuff. Now I don't know if Madman are just doing smaller volumes than Tokyopop (http://www.tokyopop.com/S-1194/15.html), or it's just another examle of just how much more awesome Australians are.

And of course, I started my collection with the Tokyopop print run, and being the somewhat pedantic person I am, I need to finsh that print run, or start the Madman run from scratch. So I am behind.

I completely agree... The anime was just too short...
and frankly, I hated the ending... It was just too weird... Its like they finished the series in a hurry or something... They didn't even mention the other two juunishi...
But... Is it really true that manga series is still continuing?
I really want to read it already!!! Waaah...

In general, I found the series great despite the extremely unsatifying ending in the anime... The characters are just too unique... Its hard to not fall in love with them... Especially Hiro, Hatori, Tohru, and Kagura... They're just the best characters in my opinion...

Yuki-kun just recently revealed that he thinks of Tohru as a mother figure!!! And if I'm not mistaken, a few volumes back Kyo-kun confessed that he loved her to.....I forgot who it was. Perhaps Akito-san. Anyways, Rin and Haru had a beautiful relationship until (DAMN YOU, AKITO!!!!!!!!!!!) Akito tramitized Rin into breaking up with Haru. Lately, they've talked alot about Rin.

Okay, so in the last volume Tohru started acting really awkward. Like she actually BLUSHED at Kyo-kun. IMO I think they are trying to speed up the ending.

Well I'm really not good at summarizing so there you go. It is about volume 14 (the latest volume).

Phew... I was afraid this topic would go on for too long without someone saying this.

If that person is still out there, yes I do reccomend the Fruits Basket anime. It's ending was thoroughly awful though...

I actually don't like the manga any more. The first like 7 books were great, but then that Natsuki-person became totally obsessed with giving everyone in it a sad past to make all the readers sad and fall in love with all the characters. I mean seriously, I don't want to read something that is just sad. And Tohru's optimism doesn't make up for it.

I want the series to end, but Natsuki Takaya had other ideas. Oh well...

Please don't take offence to this, to those who love the series! This is just a pessimist's view on the downsides of it.
