Welcome to the Student Review Contest
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/Twotwenty/sax.gif Extravaganza!http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/Twotwenty/sax.gif
Greetings all!
In (belated) celebration of the Anime Academy’s 6th anniversary, I’ve decided to hold a student review contest, one bigger than anyone we've seen before. It’s open to anyone, newbie or veteran, who has an account on the forums and thinks they can churn out a good review.
“Sounds kicking rad! Tell me more!”
Unlike previous Student Review Contests, this one doesn’t have a theme. You can review whatever anime you want. Bear in mind though, it’s all well and easy to heap praise or throw stones, so as per the professorship contests, reviews showing your ability to discern the good anime from the bad a looked upon favourably.
“Why should I enter?”
This time, there are glorious prizes! Two packs of them! You can opt to enter in either the “Action Prize Pack” and receive action anime-related prizes or the “Comedy Prize Pack” and receive comedy anime-related prizes. Also, there’s no restriction on what type of review can win a prize pack. If you want to win the Action Prize Pack with a review of an anime comedy (or vice-versa), that’s fine!
“I’m new the Anime Academy and I’m a bit lost on how to write a review. Help!”
Make sure to check out the Library at AnimeAcademy.com (http://www.animeacademy.com/). The art of Reviewing Anime (http://www.animeacademy.com/aora.php) lecture is also very handy in figuring out how to structure your review. There are also many helpful threads right here in the forum. The Student Review Archive (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22283) contains both links to other student reviews and all of the entries and winners from previous Student Review Contests.
“How is the winner going to be decided?”
Ultimately, the professors decide who receives the prizes, BUT, you get to have some say in who the winner is also! More on this later though…
“Anything else I need to know?”
Well yeah, read the following two posts carefully, but apart from that, not really. Just have fun with it! Go hog wild!

Fabulous Prizes!
It’s what we’re all here for!
ACTION PRIZE PACK!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/Twotwenty/Action-prize-pack.jpg
- The official Bleach artbook “All Colour But The Black” by Kubo Tite. It features 108 pages (almost all of which are in full colour) and a poster. 21.5 x 30cm (I have no idea what this is in inches). Brand New!
- A Bleach plastic placard thingy, most probably a pencil board of some sort (I dunno, I got it free with the artbook. I also can’t be bothered measuring it. It’s about 28-ish x 16-ish centimeters. Go metric system!). It features Ichigo in Bankai form on the front and some Bleach omake cartoons on the back (in Japanese).
- The Twelve Kingdoms light novel volume #1 “The Twelve Kingdoms: Sea of Shadow” by Ono Fuyumi- hardback. (Adapted into a damn good anime back in 2003). From the blurb:
Yoko Nakajima’s life has been fairly ordinary until Keiki, a young man with golden hair, tells her that she is his master and must return to his kingdom. With the help of a magic sword and a magic stone against the demons on her tail, Yoko begins her quest for both survival and self-discovery in her new land.
- 22.5 x 15.5cm (8 x 5.5 inches approx.) Death Note notebook. A replica Death Note featuring the rules of the Death Note, comes in its original box.
- Death Note necklace (I have no idea how long it is and I’m not opening the plastic to find out). It features a cross design, with the anime title inscribed as well as a skull at the top. Brand new, factory sealed.
COMEDY PRIZE PACK!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/Twotwenty/Comedy-prize-pack.jpg

She’s new in town—she could very well be new to the planet Earth—and with no knowledge of the world around her along with an unnatural fear of air conditioners, this green-haired gal has her neighborhood spinning out of control!

Rules!
Yes, as with any contest, there are rules, and because a fair bit of time and money has gone into setting this up, there are a couple of extra ones, so even if you are a Student Review veteran, please make sure you read through the rules carefully before submitting an entry. Unlike the past Student Review Contests, I’m not going to be lenient with the rules. If you break the rules, you will be disqualified.
1. One entry per person.
2. Only a completed anime can be reviewed.
3. The entry must be written entirely by you.
4. Entries that have been entered in previous Anime Academy Student Review Contests, any other review contest or have been submitted as a review on another website (blogs included) will not be accepted.
5. Entries must be posted before the one month deadline. Entries that are posted afterwards will be disqualified.
6. The deadline goes by Australian Eastern Standard Time.
7. Once the entry is submitted it is final. No more editing is allowed, regardless of whether it is still before the deadline. If “ Last edited by [name] : [Date] at [Time]” appears below your entry, the entry will be disqualified. You will, however, be allowed to re-submit another different review provided it doesn’t break any of the other rules. (Don’t bother just deleting your post and re-submitting it, we will know).
8. All reviews must include: A title; genre; company; format; dates; grade (in percentage); highs; lows; summary and a review. Images and captions are still optional.
8. The word count of the review must be between 300-600 words.
9. The summary must be within 50-150 words.
10. You can only enter for one of the prize packs.
11. You must indicate which prize pack you want to win in your review.
12. Multiple accounts with multiple reviews will not be tolerated. Contestants found out to have entered more than once under a different account will have their entries deleted and all accounts banned.
13. We reserve the right to unconditionally disqualify any entry we suspect to be breaking the rules.
14. Questions, queries or comments should be posted in this thread. Alternatively, send a Private Message to me or email me at Two-Twenty@animeacademy.com. I am the organizer of this contest, so only contact me in regards to it and not any of the other staff members.
15. Entries for the Action Prize Pack are to be submitted in this thread (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24992). Entries for the Comedy Prize Pack are to be submitted in this thread (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24991). DO NOT POST YOUR ENTRIES IN THIS THREAD.
16. Entries close at 11:59pm on the 26/11/07 Australian Eastern Standard Time
17. Sorry about all these bloody rules.
Just to make it a bit easier, here is an example of how a student review is generally structured:
[screencap with caption*]
Title:
Genre:
Company:
Format:
Dates:
Grade:
Summary:
[screencap/s*]
Highs:
Lows:
Review:
Prize pack: I would like to enter to win the Action/Comedy prize pack
* not mandatory
As you can see, it reflects the way reviews on the main Anime Academy site are structured, however, it doesn’t need to be exactly like this. If you want to do it differently, go for it, just make sure you include all the necessary components (once again is not necessary).
If you spot any mistakes in any of these rules or with the contest in general, feel free to tell me!
Once again, this thread is for disscussion of the contest. To enter, please post your entries in the relevant threads.

Just a reminder, this closes at 11:59pm on the 26/11/07 (26th of November 2007) Australian Eastern Standard time. I think this was the right date. It got sucked up in the forums pruning, so I just went by what it said on the main AA page.

And, just like a swinging voter casts his ballot at the last-minute against John Howard, we have a cavalcade of last-minute entries, making this contest an actual contest.
Who will win? Will a newbie steal victory from a verterans hand? Will Two-Twenty hax the vote so an Australian wins so he doesn't have to pay as much for postage? Who's regretting entering for the comedy prize pack considering how many people entered in it? Who's thanking their rukee sutaa that they entered for the Action prize pack? Can Two-Twenty locate where the hell he put that f***ing Death Note necklace? How many questions can Two-Twenty think up? Will Sorrow-kun and Shadowmage split the NR vote? (Yes, I saw that thread Shadowmage) Will Zelkiiro lose again? How will you vote? Will Bob Hawke show up drunk again? How many tears will Joe Hockey shed? Can Kevin Rudd shake the notion of Labor being poor economic manag...oh wait sorry, wrong contest.
STAY TUNED! As I answer most of these questions and try figure out how the hell I'm going to decide how we vote for winner. Huzzah!

I've been thinking over how to do this and I'm not quite sure. There are two options:
a) If there were only a few entries, as per student review contests in the past, I was going to only make two polls where the general AA masses decide the winner (I trust you all not to cheat, but we'd still chack to be safe)
b) If there were many entries, as per professorshop contests, we'd have two polls to decide the finalists then have the professors decide the winner. The problem is, we have one with a lot and one with a few. (It seems one must never underestimate the power of HAROOHEE).
What say you unwashed AA masses?
I'm more willing to go with option a) because it's more in-line with what we used to do with Student Reviews and, now that I'm not a full-time student (no more government support) and now that the election is over (no more opion polls = much less work) I best get this done while I still have the money for postage.
Shadowmage
11-27-2007, 09:21 AM
I'm leaning toward option a.
Instead of polls, how about if we vote directly with our posts? It's cumbersome to count, but it makes cheating easier to detect. (We can easily ban those who try to stack votes with multiple accounts and disqualify their votes.)

When you make a poll there an option to "Make votes public" which "Displays all users who voted, and what choice they voted for."
I think that would be the best way to stop cheaters, it saves time counting and it doesn't rely on my maths skills which are elementary at best.

Yeah, and never underestimate the difference in laziness between posting and clicking a poll... you could end up with a very limited number of voters :XD:
