View Full Version : Otakon 2008: August 8-10, Baltimore, Maryland
Because it's never too early to make plans. :)
Alex and I have it penciled on the calendar. Next year we're looking to stay in the Inner Harbor for convenience's sake.

Mana and I are in. We're also looking to stay inner harbour. Just waiting for the hotel deals to be announce.
Oh, and my apologies if I seemed out of it at Otakon 2007 and not my usual gregarious self. Barring any physical ailment next year, I'll be right there in the thick of things...
... Kainy Special, anyone? Or maybe Thunder 'n Lightning, and I can throw my hands in the air as you chug it.

Awwwwwright. Gotta have Bread on hand to whip up another Bready Special and we'll see which disgusting concoction gets pukeage first. xD
And yeah, Inner Harbor or bust next year. After two straight Otakon weekends of driving those wonderful (read: shitty) Baltimore streets, I've had quite enough.

It's too early to tell, but I'd like to go again next year. This was more fun than I expected. And next time I am not going to miss the concerts! Even if it is another J-Pop kiddie group.

Oooh, you know what would be SO MUCH FUN?! If we, like, planned to go to restaurants REALLY far away from the BCC... AND NOT DRIVE TO THEM!! So much fun.

wtfz, I didn't plan that! I don't even like seafood! Besides, it was that shitty map of Baltimore they provided in the program that threw everyone off. Making us think Obrycki's was actually closer than it was. That was not fun at all, for anyone.
But if we do plan to go to a restaurant that's more than a few blocks from the Inner Harbor, then I will drive people and make return trips if I have to, just to save dramaz and old people's (read: mouse and mira <3) legs. Worst comes to worst we could just sit down at Burke's again. That place wasn't so bad at all. :3

Speaking American is easy. Just pretend the rest of the world doesn't exist.
For study guides, I recommend Fresh Prince of Bel Aire and Spike Lee movies.
As I said before count me tentativily in. If I do make it I will probably need some help in regards to hotels and travel and the fact that I don't speak American.
That's OK, most Americans speak conversational Australian. Thanks to your delightful ambassadors Paul Hogan and the Animal Planet, I find dropping a "crikey!" and the occasional "that's not a knife" while chugging a 20 oz. Foster's Lager often get the message across Down Unda.

As you know, I said that I wouldn't be coming to Tak Tak next year because of a potential contract teaching God's language in Moonrune-land, but I've made the decision that if I don't go travelling now, I probably won't for a long time. Thus, I've put off applying for JET by one year (should be less competitive then anyway) and upgraded my Tak Tak trip from a "probably not" to a "Yes, unless circumstance* doesn't allow me". Yayz.
*Examples of such circumstances include lack of money and a really well paying personal assistant/assistant teacher job happening at the same time.

Iīd like to place out a question about Otakon in general. What sort of atmosphere for cosplay is there? I would figure itīs not particularly frowned upon (probably encouraged) but I donīt know if there are any special RULES for a cosplayer (like if there are any taboos.)Thereīs no thread for cosplay, and I figured a convention thread might be a good place to ask. Could a wise and seasoned cosplayer out there help this greenhorn get her first field experience started right?
Well, different conventions have different cosplaying policies. Most won't allow A) Real weaponry, B) overly large props C) over amounts of skimpyness/nudity.
As far as Otakon specifically goes, they have a very open atmosphere about cosplay. All the above rules apply, but other than that, just about anything goes. Some cosplays are, of course, going to be more popular than others (e.g.; Final Fantasy, FMA, Kingdom Hearts, Chii from Chobits, Silent Hill, etc.) but you'll see just about anything if you look hard enough.
As far as "unofficial" rules/taboos and such goes, there's not much that I know of. I've seen so many different cosplays/crossplays, it makes my head spin, and there isn't anything I can think that that's really been hated or frowned upon by the community at large.
Mostly, it depends on the kind of crowd you're going to be with and the kind of people you want to be meeting and talking to you. Dressing like a yaoi catboy will get you loved in some circles and get you beaten up in others, even at the same convention.
My advice? Do what you like and what you feel comfortable with. I've done cosplay for a number of years now, and I've found that the most important thing is having fun. Pick a character you like and a custome you'll be comfortable in and make the most of things. You'll be surprised who you'll meet and the enjoyment you'll have with it.
ProfessorWashu
12-09-2007, 12:41 PM
Thank you for the advice. But I do have one question about your response. What is crossplay? Would that be like if a guy decided to go as a female character or if a girl went as a guy character? (Maybe I'm being a bit dense about something obvious...) If so, is that really not frowned upon? I would've figured that would make a majority of people angry. Isn't that considered weird?

Bingo.

The anime community is fairly liberal about things like cross dressing and the like. I don't think most people would take offense to it as they would most likely take it as a joke.

Yes, you're right.
It doesn't really make people angry, though it does make some roll their eyes. Of course, it does depend on how its done, too. I've actually seen some really awesome crossplay (my friend Carmen makes a great female Spike), but it has to be done artistically.
Kanti is right, though. Generally speaking, anime fans (especially those that attend conventions) are very liberal-minded. Even "family friendly" conventions like SakuraCon in Seattle allow crossplaying/dressing, so long as it is done tastefully and respectfully.

I'll definitely be there (it'll be my second year). I was a Lulu (from FFX) last year, but I'm going to be:
- BioChemist (Ragnarok Online)
- Rozalin (Disgaea 2)
- Yuuko (xxHolic)
Currently, my friend is making a full evangelion (01) costume, but we have to do a full sized cast of her. I particularily like cosplay in Otakon because everyone is so open to all the cosplays (someone went as Kool-Aid last year, ect).
I'm really excited. :3 Our group is planning to get a charter bus for anyone in the New York City area to hop along with us.

lack of money
Yeah, I have house-moving debts (bad time to be moving house in Oz at the moment), vehicle repair bills, a credit card to pay off and apparently I owe the government money. That, and due to inflation and the cost-of-living in Australia at the moment making it very hard to be a city-dwelling-renting-self-supporting-part-time-student, I'm going to have to cancel my end-of-uni Tak Tak holiday plans in favour of rescuing my credit history.

So now Otakon has announced that they've invited Peter Fernandez, the original voice of Speed Racer and Racer X, who was also the director of the oft parodied dub and writer of it's very memorable themetune. As a fan of the oldschool, I'm just absolutely giddy at this news.
I mean, between this and Jam Project, you'd almost think Otakon was DESPERATE for my $55 registration fee. It's cool guys, you don't have to keep trying so hard, I signed on to be there two months ago.

... oh, hey. It just dawned on me now (yes, I'm a dumbass) that I can commute from DC via train if I have to. Now I don't have to worry quite so much about rooming. Huzzah!
Thinking about volunteering as a gofer this time around. Anybody interested in joining me?

Uh sure, if you don't want to be able to do anything fun, Tyr. The few I've talked to said they were worked to the bone. :/
And I don't think the MARC train runs on the weekends.

And I don't think the MARC train runs on the weekends.Hrm. Maybe I should avoid volunteering, then. It looks like I could do a minimum of 8 hours, but I don't know about scheduling and working it around stuff I want to do. :-/
Anyways. The MARC doesn't run on weekends, but Amtrak does. At about $33 round trip, it's not too bad (since I wouldn't be paying rooming costs). It would put a damper on late-night stuff, though, since the latest train is at 11:30ish PM unless I want to take the 3:00ish AM.

Pfah, 3AM is fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. Stay for the (hopefully not lame) late night hentai stuff, get out at 1-ish, booze around for a couple of hours, hop the 3AM train. It's perfect!

That's what fake ID's are for.
Oh, and it's official now: Mana and I are out. We have too much stress/bills/little time to really make it this year.

Looks like I'll be going for the first time this year.
Upon looking at the dealers room, I admit that I gave out a girly :squee:
Now I just wonder how much food I should bring with me from NY. HMM...

Well, looks like I will be finally go to Otakon for the first time this year. It is partially thanks to JAM Project playing that would motivate me to do this. I talked to a friend who s going, and managed to let me share a room in Days Inn. I have been a quiet member for quite a while, but I still think many of you are cool. I like to meet you guys during the con. :)
