View Full Version : Do 'ganguro' scare you?

Let's be honest: do they or do they not scare you?

(Ganguro is the fashion trend characterised by the bleached hair, tanned skin, cheap + tacky jewelry, platform shoes (ftw?!), miniskirts, thick socks, cell-phone charms and particulary loud mouths. Owait, fake eyelashes too. See below.)

Okay, get discussing this trend that is a "...direct conflict with traditional Japanese ideas of feminine beauty".

My God, it's like a 'before' picture for a melanoma PSA.

And yes, ganguro scares me, because I like my Japanese girls to be cute, shy and dressed in sailor fuku.

I've seen few really attractive ganguros (all in my trip to Japan) in both alluring and elegant sense. To me it's more about,
1) who dresses up like one (i.e. is her face and figure suited for such an attire?)
2) how she dresses up like one (i.e. how short is her skirt and long is her socks to express what character of her leg segment)

Needless to say, this applies to almost all fashionable attires. I haven't seen too many ganguros since east asian population in Sydney is severely lacking in Japanese, but seems to me that most of them did not take those two factors into a consideration at all. In which case, I would have to say that most ganguros repels me, but not necessarily scare me.

Something about animated ganguro creeping me out more then live ones, especially with more rough animations. Seen some in GTO long ago and that was just weird. The pic posted above isn't bad at all, but its pretty strange.

Whats Japan's rate of skin-cancer again? The ganguros mission must be to make it as high as possible.

It could be worse though. Back in the Heian period (900s-1000s), women with black teeth were considered highly attractive:eyebrow:

Goth-Loli > Ganguro

It's not really dying; it's just hit its peak. I'm pretty sure there are plenty skipping around. The one thing I must say I like the least is the hair. Okay, I bleach/colour my hair, but not to the point where it looks plain nasty. And quite often, their hair is nasty.

Same goes for the tan. Especially the ones with deep tans. Too much.
Too much of something that isn't that great to start out with? Doesn't work.

Ganguro girls don't really scare me. Seriously, they can be a nice group of people, at least better than those emo type of people who get into fights for kicks. Yes, their look can be intimidating and startling for some, but later on their fanciful look don't always reflect their behavior.

If there's anything scary about them, it's their extravagant spending on trendy (tacky) items, much alike kogals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kogaru), who apparently scare me more. Oh, and I find sentas and bonbos the scariest bunch of them all. I unfortunately don't have any sources to them, but my Japanese friends from Shizuoka told me to avoid them at all costs, for their facial drawings and outlandish hair color/style are freaky... even for them.

It's not like the western world didn't have quirks when it came to beauty ideals. o: During one period being pale was all the hype because it showed you were fancy enough to not work in the sun.

During another one being fat was considered beautiful because once again, it went to show that you were rich enough to eat well, very well indeed. And as such that rendered you desirable. (Guess that would mean the poor of the time would be the idols of anorexics today)

And don't even get me started on the internal organ crushing corsets that were all the hype for a short while. XD

Er, no, people got skincancer before global warming too due to being in the sun far too long. They just died without diagnose. o: And in between the discovery (and discovery of the cause) of skin cancer and the widespread acknowledgement of global warming there are a few decades.

But either way, even if we completely counter global warming, it would still be a bad idea to lay out in the sun all day. (There's better ways to get a tan, and probably slower ways as well)

Many people assume that having dark skin exempts you from skin cancer, but that's totally wrong. Actually, dark-skinned people die more often of skin cancers because they often go non-diagnosed. People with lighter skin notice it more easily.

Shaving legs is not artificial. That's no different then shaving your head. Artificial refers to fake colouring, or plastic surgery that kind of stuff. Cutting or removing hair is part of the natural beauty thing. Otherwise we'd have people with hair longer than their feet walking around.

I was just joking, but how is cutting hair natural? Does any other animal do it? I know there's animals who molt and shed fur and skin, but I've never heard of any that cut it. It seems to me to be wholly culture-driven, ie not any more natural than looking like a bleached blonde carrot.

Carlito
07-03-2007, 01:52 PM
Well how many other animals are capable of wielding a pair of shears or scissors? Monkeys and Gorillas, but they shed. But sheep and several breeds of dogs don't and we cut their hair/fur for them. Besides, it's more of a necessity if we didn't cut our hair it would be hanging in our faces and we wouldn't be able to see what's going on.

Turning your skin carrot-orange requires a bunch of manufactured chemicals, as does bleaching your hair nearly white. So can you see the difference?

Humans aren't as hairy as monkeys and sheep, either. I've never seen or heard of any person so hairy that they needed to shave to regulate their internal temperature the way animals that shed their winter coats do (although humans do shed more hair in the summer than winter).

Shaving involves sharpening a metal blade and dragging it along the surface of your skin. It's not exactly the safest practice in the world, as anyone who's ever torn off tiny squares of tissue paper can tell you.

You don't have to like carrot people and you don't have to dislike hairless legs. But they're each a reflection of a certain (sub)culture's standard of beauty, not a question of one being natural and one being artificial.

I'd hit it...but that's not exactly saying much.

The dyed blonde hair and the stacks of jewelry (that probably end up weighing more than they do) don't bother me too much. The drawn-on-eyebrows and globs of makeup around the eyes, however, frighten the nuggets outta me though.

It sorta reminds me of this girl back in grade school who, for whatever reason, did not have eyebrows, so she had some drawn on (most of the time haphazardly). It always looked like she was either upset about something or just really curious.

'Ganguro' can be roughly translated into 'face-black', which means they have very tanned skins... either very or grossly. Their skins are not orange at most times - more often they are brown or of similar shades. Blame the camera's optical defects for that if you will for their seemingly orange color.

Personally, when I take a second close look at those ganguro girls, they aren't that hideous... in fact, they're not hideous at all. It's their awful makeup and extensive facial mascaras that makes them hideous. If I sounded like they are purely ugly before, then I'll take those words back.

It just shows that makeup and excessive accessories can make the pretty ones look repulsive... period.

They look like drag-queen versions of Barbie dolls!

Cute still very extreme. I think the cultural features shouldn't be changed. In Brazil there was a time in which people started getting blond too... everywhere you looked you saw girls with a whitish yellow and very damaged hair... it's creepy.

Also, they used to dance making some pornographic moves.... like this girl in the following picture... she used to be a role model for teenagers. It's revolting!

Brazilian women are a lot like Japanese women in a sense. Both can be naturally quite good looking (its all about skin tone and complextion), but both feel the need to use exessive amounts of dye and cosmetics:no:

I'm not a fan of them Okay, that's a lie. I hate them. They are scary. Very scary. The scary where: they need to be put away and never seen again, kind of scary.

I hope you don't mean the Brazilian and Japanese women as a whole in context, because this can only be implied in with a selective group of women from both parties. Though Brazilian women have this not-always-true image of being vain, not all of them always feel the need to use excessive amounts of dye and cosmetics... and same goes for the Japanese ladies.

I'm stating this because your tone seems to say otherwise negatively.

Why? It's not like they're hurting anybody for dressing up like that. Maybe you should be put away and never seen again because of the way you dress. Your opinion is both prejudiced and excessive.

We have a similar trend in the UK.
The girls (and occasional guys) are called 'tantastics'
They tend to have dyed blonde hair (with extensions)
wear provocative clothing and spend 80% of their
days in tanning salons.

I don't have any real issue with it,
I'm sure my averaging £100 a month on manga
would be cause for concern to them too,
but they're not people I consider remotely attractive.

Give me a porcelain skinned, bookish meganekko anyday.

surprised nobody has said anything about the ganguro males. They are there own subculture in Japan. And they dont scare me at all. they are more open then most Japanese ppl, which relates that they are nicer. And they are considerable cooler then mosy ppl over there, which isnt saying much.

bye bye
