View Full Version : Your First Day at Anime Academy

I'm trying for a curveball here, I found threads on why anyone joined, and how they feel about the state of things. But I haven't found a thread that discusses old memories on what anyone's first day on the forums was like. So I figured I'd open this up just to see if you guys have any funny stories, facts, or links to some of your better/lesser moments in your humble beginnings.
For newer members, I suppose you could tell everyone how the experience feels so far.
I'll go first!
I found it incredibly coincidential that I joined around the time Kain announced his resignation, guess you could call me an AA member from the "Post-Kain Era" or something. Having never spoken with this guy, I entered the forums absolutely curious as to how the state of things were. And thankfully, I found this place quite welcoming.
I remembered slapping down my first two (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23282) threads (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23283), both were impulse subjects I've been hoping to talk about, and the second thread in particular had been done only once before I came (hence its rather welcome reception). I laugh at how mashed up my paragraphs look, but it appears I've gotten slightly better with organizing everything in my posts (I don't even "lol" anymore). Having plenty of great discussions with the folks that met me, the experience was gratifying to say the least. I even made some friends not too long after the first week.
I think after that nice start, I continued with (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23289) some (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23451) cool (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23440) threads (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23609), but introduced some (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23310) half-baked (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23532) experiments (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23418) in the process, and around December or January I started to really pound out some great threads. The entries I'm proudest of have been left in my signature for anyone's referrencing (except Game Music was just a post I made), just in case anyone wishes to continue those discussions in the future. I'll probably add more down there as time goes by.
Some Great Memories! (Disclaimer: some of my posts may be hard to read, watch out!)
Some amusing comparisons (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23426&page=2&highlight=oak+bridge). (back when I was incredibly spontaneous, this thread was a hoot to read, I love you guys! xD)
My discovery of Space Lion! (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23510&highlight=Space+Lion)
Talking up Sega (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23733) and Capcom (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23729) games with all the good folks at The Arcade.
A good "Milkytime" (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24140&page=6)
The Taming of the Tsundere (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24155&page=2)! (enjoyed the deep debate by SC)
A thread that transformed into an Old School debate (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24181) rather quickly.
And pretty much anything involving anime directors or the threads in my signature (minus the one post) was great fun.
Makes me sad I didn't come on the forums years ago, but I'm still enjoying the company of everyone here, and hopefully there isn't anyone who finds me a nuisance. And if I offended anyone yet during my stay, I'm always willing to give out an apology if I've said anything in the past that was offensive.
Hope you've got some memories to share (or ideas thereof).

Urgh, oh boy...
The first few days of my 'enlistment' here were one of the worse in my AA journals. I was a jerk - a really, big a** jerk who usually gives a damn of others' opinions. Heck, even I hated myself for saying obnoxious things back then! I had to re-edit some of my older posts just so that I dont remind myself on how wrongly I rubbed the people here.
Oh yeah, my first two threads were duds. The first (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22778) one was something done a gazillion times here, and the second (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22932) one was just me gloating on how I reached the 100th post mark. Both the threads are ultimately closed by none other than AA's greatest pragmatist Erigion. And I'll Eri for that, actually
After that, I sorta turned over a new leaf and tried to become mor mellow and understanding. The other threads are mostly like MilkyMagic's - threads that seek people's opinions and creating coversation with each other. Some of them bear fruit, others just pissed people off. Figures (-.-)
In fact, I hadn't been creating a lot of threads for a very long time, due to time constraints and me being more interested in posting my opinions/ideas rather than making new topics.
To be truthful, I don't ever want to recall how hateful I was back then and just look forward to each new day. It's just a lot easier for me that way.

I wouldn't worry about it, but it's sad to hear your memories in the beginning weren't so good. Still, I think you're a very interesting person to speak with, and I think everyone goes through their changes. Even I've improved with my speech, and I'm still ready to make mistakes in the future, always ready to correct them as they come up. And let's face it, those threads may be embarassing then, but I still laugh at some of my old responses because I'm ultimately here to enjoy everyone's company.
I'm human, and I always like to show it! :p

...
Sure, I'll bite.
I came over to AA in the ruckus over the Kimi ga Nozomu Eien review, and my very first post was in one of those threads "discussing" it. Don't see many discussions like that one anymore, which is a shame.
My first thread: clicky (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11621)
It all sort of degenerated from there, with a bunch of Random Thoughts and other extraneous threads. I like to think that they sparked some conversation, although really the only one that did was my comment about hating AA. :suspiciou

I miss your threads. Here, but mostly at ABM. ;.;
And I can't remember my arrival. I think I spammed up the favorites threads in Gen. Anime.

I remember my first day. I prattled on about Fullmetal Alchemist, made some stupid comments about dubs, flamed the legendary Kelis Kracks constantly and generally kicked ass.
Well, not really. A lot of my old posts make me cringe, but I have no intention of "doing a shizukuchan" and deleting them.
My first thread was about Monster. It's been over three years since, and I still haven't seen it all. I think I'll chalk that up to being Monster's fault more than mine. >_>

From what I learned above, it seems everyone has their own cringing to do with their first memories, though I still appreciate the old conversations as they were put before me. Let's just say that even when I was probably looking stupid in front of everyone, I still had a good time, and that's what counts most. Plus, when you work past any criticism and learn to grow on your own, the rewards tend to increase. And as I've said before, making mistakes always comes with the territory, it's just the hurdle of correcting them that remains most important.
Still, I enjoyed knowing how some of everyone's first days here went, good or bad. And I think deleting one's own posts should only be approvable if it was offensive or inappropriate to everyone else (like if someone asked them to do it), otherwise I see no shame in leaving a bad post here and there. On the other hand, I don't believe in deleting one's own threads, that's just rude.

Agreed. Such posts, good or bad, add flavour into the forums and make it a lot more interesting place to be in. It also serves as a means of remembering past. Things that have such value shouldn't be deleted, unless its absolutely necessary of course.
Oh yes, have I mentioned this old thread (http://animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22047) I made?

Agreed, especially when considering that link you provided was quite hilarious, I couldn't stop laughing at how things started developing. Conversations here will always be more amusing and fun as long as some of us are willing to accept where we've gone before. Looking back at some of my own threads brings back great amusement as well.
I didn't want to join at first. Ritalin and Kawaii Neko and Naota all made me ;_;' So I joined and I had no idea what the hell a forum was so I didn't post anything and lost the password to my account. The first day of my second account was probably just a lot of lurking.

Wow, by force? Can't complain there, sometimes friends know what's best for you, and sometimes they're just freaking insane. Thankfully, I think they're a clever combination of both! :D
Sucks to hear you don't have any stories, but sometimes we don't start off with any real impression until an experience grows on. No different than moving to a new school when you're younger and trying to figure out who could be your friend in a crowd of people you're unfamiliar with. I've moved to three different locations as a kid, and in each school I was a non-entity until halfway through my first semester of wherever I was at, so I understand that sort of experience.

Still doesn't work for those of us that were around before the big server problem that occurred. :p
My first day at AA probably consisted of me posting relentlessly in the anime forum because post counts mattered and all that. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/Ph4t3/Emot/emot-downs-1.gif
In my defense, I was also 14.

Well... my first post was made in the wrong section (it was me bein over-excited by a convention I was attending, but I posted it in the anime section)... that was my first post and first thread... really didn't do much lurking beforehand to learn the place first.
Gotta say, AA was my very first forum ever. And I guess though my first post and subsequent ones after that weren't exactly controversial or even that big a deal, I was still quite embarassed by my obvious naivety at the time to the world of forum whoring. I care far more about what others said and thought of what I said back then and was at one point even distressed for a while about one of those religious threads crap I joined in :XD:

Wow, this (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?p=156444#post156444) seems to be my first post. Back when my entire collection consisted of Cowboy Bebop, Excel Saga, Love Hina and Steel Angel Kurumi. My my, I think my tastes have changed a little since then. Possibly apart from Bebop (haven't seen it in a long time), I don't think I'd find any of those as great as I thought back then. Probably would still enjoy them though.
For some reason, I always thought this (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9808) was the thread I first posted in, back when Dtortor was symbol-sama. Maybe because it was a more intelligent discussion, rather than the pretty droll post there.
There are so many threads there, it would take me forever to go through and find the memorable ones. But there was this one where some guy was asking about 'Teacher Pleases', which turned into a spamfest that SC kept open for his own masochistic pleasure.....

Ah, yes, Kain's FLCL review was linked in another forum I visited at the time (which no longer exists), and I liked the writing style. I joined up and sent a PM to Kain being anal about a misspelling of the word "cojones" in the review (was written "cajones", or "drawers" instead of the intended meaning...).
Then I just kinda stayed around and started posting.

Same here, I haven't even participated in discussion boards before I arrived at Anime Academy, I used to just email friends and that was it. It takes a special skill and practice to be a respected force in a discussion board, but I'm opting to just come as myself and make as many friends as possible. I might not have the most insightful posts at times, but I really do try to make them great for the most part (give or take the occassional subject I just can't comment much on).

I've got friends that say that kind of stuff to me all the time, it gets annoying at first, and then you become used to it. After I realized they were playing around, I had fun trying to retort all their poking on my geeky stature. Such things make you grow, and to accept teasing and criticism with greater ease. Plus a good friend knows when to call you a "wuss" whenever you mope over how bad your day was. :D

Awesome. You guys are the best friends ever. Ever ever ever ever.
Also, don't say that. :P Most of your posts are avowedly hetero unless it comes to Jessica Alba.
I wandered from thread to thread, read the rules, and wondered what on earth people were talking about when they talked about threads. Then, I kinda forgot this place existed for a few months. Found it again, so here I am!

I probably would've thought you were cool even then, of course, if I would've been here during 2003 you'd have me talking about Evangelion and Mahoromatic a lot. But it was also around 2002 when I loved director Mamoru Oshii, so you guys still would've been exposed to that, though I wasn't big on Gunbuster like I am now (which is interesting to note).
However, I lacked knowledge on many other directors and shows at the time, so it wouldn't have been as interesting to have me around then, especially since I'm more open-minded now than I was before. If I would've recieved flames back then, I probably wouldn't have tolerated it, but as of today I can stomach many things, including my own stupidity.
I went through many taste changes in the span of about three years, so each changing year would've been fairly different in that regard.

My first post was lost in the Anime Academy fire of late 2002, also known as "server went kaput and lost a crapload of accounts in the process."
The first post I did after I got over the shock of finding all my insightful and delightful pieces of knowledge obliterated and sent to oblivion was in this thread:
http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4909
Obviously, it had to be a KOR thread, and yes, as you can see, my style has not changed that much. If you believe I'm a pompous windbag now, I was not that different then.
Only thing that change was the actual grade I gave this anime once I got to review it.

sorry SC, left yourself wide open on that one.
To stay on topic, I doubt my first day was very memorable, think I only did 2 posts. Not sure if too many days after that were memorable either, and if your asking yourself who the hell is this guy? that just further proves my point.
It might have been timing, as I don't get into newer series as much before they're completely released (and so don't tend to post in those threads) and seem to have missed the years where older series have been discussed at length.

I've always missed the debates for the most part, give or take the occasional thread on a Gainax product or Madhouse.
Otherwise, when I'm in the mood for conversation and there's no threads I can comment on, I just create my own. And I mean, I create as many as I feel! :D

SC, it is always a pleasure to communicate with you, even if you punch me in the balls with some of your opinions. It's nice to hear someone who has their own thoughts on many things, especially anime. In fact, some of the threads I've made have been improved overall with your colorful insight. And I'm sure one of these days I'll have the capacity to keep up a good debate with you, though there's definitely been some great conversations that I could easily name off that we've both participated in.
But it's great when you can take a joke too! Oh yeah! xD

My first day here, I posted a review. I read other reviews before I made that one, and from my point of view, it was no different from the ones by professors. My review was immediately put down by a senior member, his whole post translated to "it sucks", but with flowery words that would make MS Word's dictionary go haywire. Luckily, someone stopped by and pointed out what exactly I did wrong. I thanked them both and never wrote a proper review again.
The only other review I ever made after that was a sarcastic one. (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23588)

That's unique, I just went ahead and made some threads before bothering to post in others, but the idea of making a review seemed too daunting for the first day. You've got guts! :p
I even participated in the Student Review Contests for a bit, but I haven't watched much anime as of late, and if I had half a brain I'd go back and try another one. Right now, I think I'm being powered with one-third of a brain, so it's been rough.
And what happened to the Sarcastic Reviews? I remember those being popular for a little while!

I was in high school when I joined. Long story short those memories are lost in a haze of alcohol and narcotics.
Well anyway, I remember this place stuck out for me because people here embraced grammar, and I could never get my fill of the anime reviews (especially Kain's). I still say most of the "profs" here have a very developed sense of expression. What hit me like a ton of bricks shortly afterward was the fact that many users were actually close to other users, either through the forum or in real life. I thought that was awesome, so as soon as I deemed myself somewhat integrated in the forum culture, I stepped up to IRC.
THEN I discovered that the frequent IRC crowd was an even closer, more intimate group than the only-forum-goers. I was blown away. So after about two months of pretty much not saying a goddamn thing, I finally started readily making IRC conversation, and I got to know some really fun people, and all in the forest were finally at peace...
...then they introduced me to 4chan...

My first day? That was... today!!
erm... I'm trying hard to get involved.
I've posted a little and browsed a few threads.
I'm also thinking I should look into getting IRC...
forums are always quite hard work for me,
but long term I'd like to get to know a few people
and hopefully up my post count bit by bit.
so far everyone seems nice and willing to engage
in threads and activities... I aim to get there too...

My first day here was, like ... ages ago. I seriously don't remember it at all.
I was initially referred here by a friend in the heyday of my forum-joining extravaganza around March of 2003. At that time, I was still pretty much a newbie to forums, and spent my earliest memories here posting unintelligent jibberish in random threads that interested me. I've since created a grand total of at least six accounts, with a combined post total of less than one hundred. I've essentially been a silent shadow which flickers in and out from time to time.
I recently acquired a desire to expand my horizons, however, and this friendly, semi-famililar place looked like a nice joint to start with. So ... you might be seeing a lot more of me from now on. ;) Or who knows, perhaps I'll fade back into the night, only to reappear several months from now.
Scary thought, isn't it?

If I was a busier man, you could bet I wouldn't be on here all that much. But alas, I'm certainly full of time, and I seem to use a bit of it here whenever I'm in the mood to talk or joke with a few folks. On that note, hope you enjoyed being here so far!
And on another note, I think it's been a while since I've made a decent thread, better get to work on one of those!
Scary thought, isn't it? Only if you pull a Michael Myers and surprise me right outside my home from those very shadows.

No but really it's full of mean people. People like Roark who kick for no reason. D:

Roark doesn't kick for no reason. His reason for kicking is that he misses people that he used to kick all the time, like Yuri and Kaoi.

Anyway, IceDemon, when someone says a comment that sounds rather absurd (i.e. preaching the message of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Holocaust denial, or Mana's comparing feminists to dykes and Nazis), chances are that it's meant in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
The best bet, even if the person is serious, is to either respond by laughing it off or better yet, by playing along.
Or perhaps the whole comment about me only kicking men was sarcastic in the first place since, you know, I'm not sexist. =\ You need to put more ranks in detect sarcasm.

When you're here long enough, you feel a mental growth with enough interaction. I can still say I've made some great threads in my beginnings, but my later efforts turned out much better because my communication skills vastly improved from all my experiences.

Had I been around, I would've spilled off all the Lupin anime I own, and gushed all over how awesome I thought that series was.
For the record, though The Castle of Cagliostro is the best Lupin film, I totally enjoyed The Fuma Conspiracy and the ever hilarious Mystery of Mamo on that note.
Also, I thought The Legend of the Gold of Babylon was actually quite watchable when given some of the lesser Lupin films I've seen, namely Bye Bye Liberty Crisis and Napoleon's Dictionary (or something like that).
I know what your favorite anime is...

I'd love to make a thread on an anime I appreciate, but most discussion comes with newer anime usually, especially when you have the privilege of breaking it down as it airs. Older shows can certainly be discussed, but I probably wouldn't know what to provide as a topic-worthy anime, especially when considering all the strange choices I have for personal favorites.
Still, it's better to make threads that haven't been tried, or just seldom tried in the long run. Otherwise, some forums would be doomed to discuss anime such as Neon Genesis Evangelion for all of eternity.

I've been a "member" since 2001, although I obviously didn't participate in the forums much. I have an old account under "Urashima" but for the life of me I can't remember the password.
My first anime non-TV anime was Love Hina, which was what got me obsessed. Ever since I've always used AA's reviews to check what I watch, and I've seen at least half in the library. I know theres quite a few review sites out there, but I've always really respected the reviewers. I with staff like Keitaro, Madoka, and Grievton were still around ='[

I don't exactly remember which came first, the AA site and forum or the AA IRC chan. (waaaaaaaaaaaay back on ETG)
One of my friends back in high school kept telling me about AA and how I should check out both the site and IRC chan. He used to be one of the AA professors, but is since retired (don't know why he's not listed as retired though.)
I can imagine that my very first day on the forum probably consisted of making 1 thread and/or posting replies to a few others (very very few.) And I'm sure I made an ass out of myself on the IRC chan. but thats ok, I still do. :P

I remember being pretty surprised. Up until that point, I had no idea was alive and being updated. I had been reading from the website, but I imagined it had stopped being modified a long time ago (don't ask... I don't even remember why. Failure to look at the dates, maybe?). So I usually imagined myself walking along the deserted hallways of a dusty library, picking up some long gone student's notebook which contained, word for word, the lectures of a certain teacher, and then as I read it it came back to life in my imagination.
...yes, I know, I am pretty insane. XD
Anyways, I was shocked to find the Academy was bustling with activity. I think I was scared at first, but eventually I joined, chose an Inuyasha avatar, and if I remember correctly made a couple of posts. I tried to do it in a way where I wouldn't talk to people; more in a list topic of sorts. For example, if a topic required discussion, I was afraid of talking with others because of being new, so I would instead post in the recent Manga purchase thread or somewhere else I was unlikely to engage in conversation. I have outgrown my shyness since. ^_^;

(OK, I'm still not sure if that was what really happened or if that forum did find bestiality pictures of the girl, but it's an example.)
That would be a hazing. AA is fairly gentle by internet hazing standards. I still say no one asked for anything but an honest discussion.

In my first day at AA, I scanned through probably every thread and tried to make a statement in all of them. I was trying to let people know I existed, that I had joined up.
I was very well recieved, and everyone was very polite to me. Even when they disagreed with me, the AA members were very polite and reasonable. They were even reasonable when they ripped my arguments a new one. Basically, it taught me how to take criticism while not assuming it is hostile. In particular, I'd like to thank Roark for that.
In the days that followed, I would continue to post, and even started a few threads. I made a lot of new friends (Tamanegi Sensei is cool, Mana is a nice person, and Isolated Otaku is a pretty good person if I say so myself.) In other words, the sense of community was quickly established.
After a while here, I noticed that Milkymagic was a really nice person too, and that Milkymagic always managed to make the best damn threads in AA (in my humble opinion...) Every one was a hit!
In short, my experiences with AA, both early on and present, have been one gigantic mass of fun and interest. I get to have good conversations about topics I care about with reasonable and intelligent individuals. Professor Washu officially loves AA, now and forever.
In effort to save this thread, I've split the "Opinions" discussion to a different thread. Because of the split, some posts may seem a bit odd. Just an FYI.
