I think that I'm a bit drawn to artists whom cause trouble. I don't know why, but I am. :flyzapper:

This thread is to discuss artists and their controversies, whether it be through video, song, performance, opinions, politics, sex, religion (obvious who the last three are directed towards) etc.

To just name a few of the artists that I admire (and that have caused controversy over time): Courtney Love, The Dixie Chicks, and Lady M. There are many more, so tawk amongst yurselves.

The Dixie Chicks by a country mile :) What's funny about what happened to them in 2003 was they were right and the wingnuts who went after them were sooooooo wrong about Iraq

I hate artists who generate controversy for the sake of controversy and use it as a way to simply gain a reputation. Great artists that are controversial should have one purpose or another that they are trying to push forward, and those are the ones that gain my respect. So all those young punkers who think they're cool...someone tell them they're not. But I do think there is a limit to how many buttons a person can push; Marilyn Manson, while he began alright, has sold out to his public persona and just follows what everyone expects him to. His music may change but his image will never be.

People I like
Dixie Chicks
Eminem
Bjork, to an extent
That's all I can think of right now. And if I were to name old rock bands, this list would go on forever.

Eminem does seem to be in that category, with my personally. He hasn't done much to push forward; his public image was tattered, and he seems not to care. Although, he hasn't done anything too controversial, if I recall.

The Dixie Chicks and their political views make them win by a mile; especially because they aren't the generic country-bimbo. +'s.

The Dixie Chicks FTW. My mom hates them for what they said. She refuses to listen to their new song (dont' remember what it's called). I personally love those girls.

"Not Ready To Make Nice", I believe. =)

My parents won't listen to them, either. But for seperate reasons (they can't stand country. Then again, I can't either. But they usually have different styles mixed into one).

Has anyone read Courtney Love's new bio, Dirty Blonde? I'm very much anticipating her second solo release; Linda Perry could make dustbunnies rock. That woman has created so many amazing songs, I'm really going to love this new album. She won't allow any of the songs to suck. XP

Well, there's always The "Bigger than Jesus" Beatles.

I liked early Eminem, but as his career has gone on he's become much more generic gangsta and less satirical social commentator.

I'm much more a fan of controversey in the form of speaking truth to power than of the OMG bewbs and cursing variety.

Pro
Public Enemy
NWA

Con
80s Madonna
2 Live Crew

The latter just seem so contrived. And frankly, the controversey generated by breasts and bad words seems juvenile.

Even less interesting are the "controversies" that have nothing to do with the music at all, but involve the musician's personal life - Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. Those aren't even controversial artists, they're more mainstream artists with controversial private lives.

Michael & Janet Jackson - The former gets frisky when surrounded by kids, the other gets good/bad publicity for revolutionizing the term 'wardrobe malfunction'. Apart than their public antics, they should also be top of the "Where Are They Now?" list.

Madonna a.k.a. Queen of Controversy - Suggestive videos in her early years, a run-in with the Jewish religious bodies with her "Die Another Day" music video, her much forgettable "Swept Away" movie directed by her husband himself... what more can she offer the public next time... :\

Courtney Love - Ever since the legendary Kurt Cobain died, she has never learnt how to get hold of her own life. Seriously, the chances of her kicking her drug addictions and drinking problems are as slim as seeing George Bush and Osama Laden shaking hands.

Eminem - Caused alot of commotion for apparently making fun of other artistes... which I will applaud him for doing so. Unfortunately, it seems he's losing his edge and is now becoming a shadow of his former I-don't-give-a-f*ck persona.

Charlotte Church - Oh, how terrible... from an sweet little girl who can seem to do no wrong with her angelic girl, she then fell down to being a heavy smoker with a voice of a horse. For shame :O

I don't much about other artistes, but these are the ones I can vividly remember...

Have you forgotten about Kid Rock? And Paris Hilton. And ooh, Britney Spears! O_o

"Good" controversy, sweetie. Not the 'look at me, zomg' kind. >.> *cough*Kanye*cough*

About this, you haven't even touched the surface.
There's an entire page dedicated: this is the reason she's the "Queen". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna%27s_controversies)
-seductive performance of "Like a Virgin"
-messages behind 'Papa Don't Preach'. (which is a good message, IMO)
-nipples whilst performing "Ray Of Light"
-1992. Plain and simple.
-Masturbation scene in Blonde Ambition Tour (that police told her to cut, but she refused)
-Body of Evidence, anyone?
-1994 on David Letterman. That deserves a LOL.

She's probably doing something this very second that's controversial. :bunny:

As for Courtney, she looked a million times more amazing that her last appearence in public. I'm proud of her; she needs a pat on the back. <3

I watched her interview with Jay Leno. She sounded still "out there", but a bit better. I liked Hole and I was wondering whatever happened to that band. Now I know :(

Oh, by the way Britney Spears+Paris Hilton. You think together they would make what you call "good" controversy? If they had a concert together, that would be awesome to watch. On YouTube.

*Hmph* Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and The Mary Olsen twins should jump into the bandwagon called "Public Whores", and here's why:

Britney Spears - She made Sharon Stone proud with her Basic Instinct moneyshot. Plus, nude ads of her pregnant figure, shotgun marriages and early suggestive clothing makes up all the controversy... oh, and let's not forget the smooch between her and Madonna herself at the VMAs.

Paris Hilton - Is there anything about her that's NOT controversial? If it wasn't for her sex romp video, she would've been a nobody. Later on, she's been in the limelight with her flings with numerous male stars and loathing sociallite lifestyle. Urgh, shows to you that you don't need brains to be successful in Tinseltown :bashhead

Nicole Richie - She makes Calista Flockheart, Lara Flynn Boyle, Kate Moss and other famous aneroxics proud with her stick-like body. Plus, her socialite lifestyle is also second to none. I'm glad she had a spat with Paris during their reality TV show...:D

Mary Olsen twins - Oh boy, another top candidates for The Aneroxic Guild. I believed that one of them just won the Best Worst Dressed in some award show, and I agree hands down with that. Pfft!

Slow down there, AC. Seems you like to bitch about the celebrities, which is fine, but we are talking about music here, and the majority of those, as far as I know, aren't musicians. Let's try to stay on topic, shall we? ^^;

As far as controversial musicians go, Courtney Love is undoubtedly my favourite. Her solo stuff can be touch and go, but I loved her music with Hole, and still listen to it fairly often.

Then again, I don't follow celebrities at all, so I dno't hear about most of this fancy gossip talk :S

Alright my bad, maybe I am going a little off-topic with Nicole Richie and the Olsen twins, though :p. I do sound very caustic with my remarks but I frankly don't hate those artistes vehemently OR bear any grudges with their music whatsoever just for the sake of bitching.

It's just that I tend to hate artistes who would do things that would harvest public attention, especially through disgraceful acts. I do love Eminem and Madonna's ingenious works, but I can't stand some of their miscellaneous antics. Don't mean to be a player-hater on this topic, so Mana, feel free to whip the bad boy in me... :hapbounce

The scary thing is that a majority of those he posted about are "artists"... Except for the Olsens, but I guess we are to expect something from them. I must be honest and say I like Nicole Richie, especially when it comes down to Paris VS Nicole. She's humorous and actually holds some wit.

Love's first solo record reallllllly sucked. Like, major suckage. I'm glad she pulled herself up by the bootstraps and Linda Perry (ZOMG) is in studio with her. When I hear the new single, I'm sure there will be a difference. Maybe it will come close to what Hole rocked back in the day. ;)

Let's hope. <3

I'm hoping, too, I'm just not very hopeful >_>; Many of the people who I liked in bands went on to do single albums that I was less than pleased with, so I'm not expecting much...

You can't say controversy without saying Prince and if it's really vanilly you can always Blame it On The Rain. All references aside, what kind of controversy can go in here/ I mean sure you have a few boob flashes through Lil Kim and Ms Jackson to the lame and Janet if your nasty, but this can go way deep in the history of music. System of a Down's Boom, Robbie Williams, Kelis, R.E.M, Rammstein, that crazy f-ed love square of the sex pistols, frickin George Michael, NIN, Keith Richards, Audioslave, Franky Goes to Hollywood, and hell even Duran Duran and Pearl Jam. Scratching the surface I am, but I just scraped the iceberg on this one.
