Some favorite 80s tunes of mine, the decade I grew up around (beside the early 90s with the grunge scene).
"She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby (The Golden Age of Wireless, 1982) - Absolutely crazy sounds mixed with some quality funk and an old man chiming "Science!" every now and again. Catchy, and worthy of its vintage.
"What You Need" by INXS (Listen Like Theives, 1985) - From the way this song begins, to the sudden way things clash together into a catchy pop stream, this anthem talks about surprisingly interesting subjects (how people live).
"Still Life in Mobile Homes" by Japan (Tin Drum, 1981) - Quirky English group Japan kept their Asian sound mixed in with the current New Wave tinkerings of their period. Still Life had some neat electronic textures, excellent bass, and a decadent vocal delivery.
"Lorelei" by Cocteau Twins (Treasure, 1984) - Dreamy textures of guitar work mixed in with heavenly sounding vocals, perfect music for losing one's self.
"Alive and Kicking" by Simple Minds (Once Upon a Time, 1985) - This was when their delivery was bold, when everything was supposed to nail the listener with a barrage of driving sounds and sensations. A title accurate to its sound.
"Keep Feeling (Fascination)" by The Human League (Fascination, 1983) - Catchy as 80s synth can allow, all jamming together with the unusually stringed together vocals, all strangely mechanical. I love it.
"Electric Avenue" by Eddy Grant (Killer on the Rampage, 1982) - The coolest song ever made. Reggae like I've never heard it before.
"To Live and Die in L.A." by Wang Chung (To Live and Die in L.A., 1985) - The soundtrack to the film of the same name had a great title song, and it just clicked with it's soft feel.
"1999" by Prince (1999, 1983) - If I had to pick one Prince song...this would one would barely edge out the rest, it just kicks itself into high gear too efficiently.
"King of Pain" by The Police (Synchronicity, 1983) - The Police had a solid collection of songs, but this one came together with its clashing instrumentations.
I've got others, but this is the list I can currently come up with at the moment. Feel free to give me any of your favorites in the meantime!
