So yea, the Zune, mp3 player from Microsoft, is coming out soon and frankly it looks awesome (http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/03/zune-complete-interface-walkthrough-video/). Once someone hacks that 3 by 3 thing and you can transfer songs at will it looks like it'd be a mighty fine device.

Of course Apple isn't going to sit idly by and by the looks of it the next generation iPod looks absolutely (http://blogs.zdnet.com/ip-telephony/?p=1297)amazing (http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/26/apple-updates-patent-for-touchscreen-device/). Of course, there's no guarantee that Apple will follow through with that patent but damn that looks like a great device. Camera, music, videos? Hells yes. Course I'm kinda wondering how you're supposed to hold it if the entire area around the screen is touch sensitive and controls the thing...

In any case, thoughts and opinions on these things?

As Erig already knows, I'm asking for a Zune this Christmas. I got an iPod last year from my mother so I'm kinda hoping that maybe this year she'll do the same and get me a Zune. >.>

It kind of blows that it's only 30 gigs since my iPod is 60, but ehh. It's prettier and newer and shinier than my iPod, so yaaaaay. \o/

I'm waiting to see what happens with this new generation of iPod to be honest, and also the Zune's 'hackability'.

I like the look of the Zune, but I definately won't be buying one straight away because of too many uncertainties about how its main selling feature will be working in the long run. If hacked it could be good, but I don't know how much it'll be able to do then either, how many Zune users am I going to find traveling around China and Asia?

I would rather not buy an expencive piece of hardware on the off chance that a good third-party firmware will make it much more usable.

Also 30GB really isn't enough for me now days. If I want to use this thing for traveling I need it to be used for music, anime, tv, movies, pictures and as a portable traveling HD, so I need more than 30GB, I use a 20GB iRiver now and I have problems, and this is with out video being used on it. So the HD is a bit of a turn off.

It looks sexy, but the new iPod could look sexier.

So I'm waiting on iPod stuff first, then we'll see on Zune.

I'm pretty sure people who use iPods don't set them on a table and leave them there to listen to music. There's a reason it's a PORTABLE media player.

All I want from my portable MP3 player is to play music on the go. So no need for videos (which suck ass on such a small screen anyway) or a camera (which most people have in their cellphones nowadays). I want a cheap and convenient little thing to listen to music with, so I'm not really interested in either one of those.

Ditto. Then again, I'm happy with my MP3 CD player >>;

Don't challenge him. He's well capable of surpassing himself.

Now, The Zune looks cool, and the X360 marketplace integration is nice (me being a 360 owner and all). If it delivers on what it promises, I'd most certainly pick one up.

However, I do have a relatively new 5G 30GB iPod, so I'd need to find a really good chance to unload it for a decent amount of cash so I'd have a good incentive to make the switch.

I'll probably wait a couple generations before I purchase it, unless the Zune ends up surpassing all expectations, in which case I might be willing to take a couple dozen dollar hit in the switch.

The major issue stopping me from buying into the Zune is the DRM crap on the transferred mp3 files. 3 plays/3 days just doesn't seem worth the effort taken to extract the song from someone elses player.

Frankly, I think the Zune is shit. Don't mistake me for an Apple fanboy, because I'm in a love/hate relationship with my own iPod (it enjoys formatting itself), but I'm definately not a fan of Microsoft consistently trying to break into every secular market with their own version of the technology.

Even if the Zune is a superior media device, I won't buy it simply to spite Microsoft. I just wait for the day when Microsoft opens a supermarket.

Yeah, that part isn't particularly pretty, but then again, there is no possible way MS could have given a less restrictive DRM... actually it's rather decent, considering how the the whole music industry get their panties in a bunch whenever you mention anything even remotely resembling "digital distribution".

If the Zune becomes widespread, I would most certainly use this feature extensively. Whenever I have a music discussion with someone it inevitable comes to "have you heard x?no? you should" at some point. Transfer the file, and if you like it, get your MP3 in your most favorite DRMless way.

It's an improvement over the current "nothing" we have right now.

See, this attitude is never helpful towards either you or others. Exactly what problem do you have if Microsoft penetrates other markets and becomes a bigger company, if they're doing a better job than the current competitors?

Heck, I'll eat ChocoWindows with Milksoft if they taste better for the price than my beloved Cheerios.

I am not going to buy a Zune because if its DRM issues. Zunes DRM seems worst the apples DRM, which i know is not perfect.

Lulz DRM only affects you if you buy music from websites. Which is for suckers. Or you buy CDs loaded with crap. Which is also for suckers.

<.<

The 3x3 issue is just for songs sent to you from other Zunes. Microsoft isn't going to randomly delete songs you've uploaded from your computer after 3 days or 3 plays.

Griveton: I hate Wal-Mart for the same reason. It's the principle of the idea, not so much the company itself.

I know this, but it's still not worth the effort to find someone else's Zune to transfer music for 3 days/3 plays.

I bought a Zune today, and I'm having a ton of fun making it "mine". I didn't think I'd be able to afford one, but my birthday just rolled around and I was finally able to buy something fancy for myself.
I love the design, and I feel comfortable holding it knowing that it's not gonna scratch up. I'm using a PSP screen protector for the screen... since the Zune has so little available accesories at the moment -_-
I love the big screen, and it's so easy to navigate. I love it so far. :)

Sorry if this seems to completly stir away from the topic.

EDIT: I just noticed that they blur it out in this video, but if anyone has seen it on MTV, do you know what I'm talking about.
