I didn't see a thread about Japanse food, so I thought I should start one.

does anyone have a favorite food?Has anyone actually been to Japan and tried something new? Was there some food you tried that was absolutely disgusting?

I have never been to Japan, but I have tried some food at sushi bars. I love tako salad and anything with eel in it. If I get a chance to go to Japan I would love to try the octopus batter balls (I forget what they're called).

I believe those would be takoyaki.

I unfortunately have not been to Japan (or anywhere far from my hometown -_-), so I haven't tried any authentic Japanese cuisine. The only answers I am able to give at this time are onigiri and unagi sushi (I believe that's what it was called... pretty much just barbecued eel sushi). Delicious! :)

You can't argue with most sushi or sashimi:yes:

I'll take whatever they got that doesn't have some crazy seafood or vegetables in it.

Well that pretty much disqualified most sushi.

Me, I love almost any makizushi (rolls) and can bear the shashimi and nigiri (sliced fish on and without rice). The Unagi pretty much rocks my world. Though I would question if it qualifies as sushi as it is, I believe, cooked to a certain degree. At all costs avoid the baby octopus! And indulge deeply in the pickled ginger and edomami. Oh and the binto boxes are fun too. Just my humble opion on the matter.

Ahhh... Sushi... The universally recognized japanese delicacy... One of my favorite foods in the world... So many types to choose from... HEAVEN!!! I also would like sukiyaki or some nice ebi tempura...

Ah I remember the first (and so far only) time I went for japanese. XD I just took the plunge and ordered myself a dish with squid in it. It was surprisingly tasty. And easy to digest. XD For anyone concerned that the squid might take revenge on your stomach.

Ramen may have been an Chinese dish originally but it's definitely been adopted and changed by the Japanese, changing it quite a bit from whatever the original Chinese dish was.

I've never had authentic Japanese curry or hamburger but I would still call ramen a Japanese dish. Much like how I the term pizza means two different things in America and Italy, it's changed too much.

Tonkatsu. Panko crumbs are seriously the most delicious thing in the universe, especially when placed around succulent pork.

I am the best jew ever.

I did have homemade onigiri once, at a cultural potluck at my high school. Those were quite tasty. Really, I've liked most Japanese food I've had. I'm not a huge fan of sushi, though.

The difference between american/italy pizzas and japanese/indian curries are similar IMO. There's just as much (bit less maybe) curry restaurants as ramen restaurants in Japan, of course I'm excluding all the places that provide coupon ordered instant meals of ramen/udon/soba/katsudon/etc. And Japanese curries do have distinctive taste that is rarely found in other countries' cuisines. Burgers I'm not sure about.

EDIT: in other words, 'japanese curry' I would consider as japanese cuisine, since it takes up such a large portion of their cuisine.

I bought crab sushi once, and it tasted nice ^^ My fave Japanese food is shrimp tempura, for drinks I prefer rice tea with milk. Does Meiji Chocolate count?

The Japanese have always been good borrowers (See Anime, etc), so curry doesn't surprise me.

Tempura is actually from Portugal, but the Japanese took to it during the Sengoku era.
