Be loyal, kind and don't steal movies

LOS ANGELES -- A Boy Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, etc., etc. He is also respectful of copyrights.

Boy Scouts in the Los Angeles area will now be able to earn a merit patch for learning about the evils of downloading pirated movies and music.

The patch shows a film reel, a music CD and the international copyright symbol, a "C" enclosed in a circle.

The movie industry has developed the curriculum.

"Working with the Boy Scouts of Los Angeles, we have a real opportunity to educate a new generation about how movies are made, why they are valuable, and hopefully change attitudes about intellectual property theft," Dan Glickman, chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, said in a statement Friday.

Scouts will be instructed in the basics of copyright law and learn how to identify five types of copyrighted works and three ways copyrighted materials may be stolen.

Scouts also must choose one activity from a list that includes visiting a movie studio to see how many people can be harmed by film piracy. They also can create public service announcements urging others not to steal movies or music.

I bet all the scouts that receive this badge download and pirate movies and music.

What's wrong with Boy Scouts learning about film piracy?

to be followed shortly by the 'good scouts report thier parents' to authorities' badge, no doubt.

The scary thing about this is really who's writing the curriculum. This actually could be a worthwhile cause, assuming that it was labelled as a civics lesson in freedoms, rights, and where your rights end.

I somehow doubt that the curriculum covers all aspects of copyright, though. Because this type of civics lesson could actually be useful, were it to be written right. Understanding the laws of the world you live in is important for informed voting populaces.

I have already lost all respect for the Boy Scout's institution since the mormon church took over.

It's a shame.

This, however, is not nearly as big an issue.

I would make a public service announcement using stolen material. I'd love to see how that went over.

Oooh... Wow... The boy scouts of the future... Next thing is a merit badge on computer repair, or perhaps education on the evils of text messaging...

I remember reading about this in the paper.

The sad part is that they don't even technically get a merit badge for their work either. They get something else that is in essence like taking a college class that you don't get credit toward your GPA for...

Only (about) 52,000 scouts are actually participating in this programs and 90% of them have parents that work in the filming industry...
