I play computer games a lot and it's surprising that I don't have carpal tunnel yet. I can't count how many times I've said lol to my friends. It's all in good fun though.

+Massive obsession with playing my DS (mainly StarFox Command and MPH, now some LostMagic too).

+Reading, to the point where I consider books like the unabridged Count of Monte Cristo light reading.

+Collecting random commercial goods for the series I loved as a kid (I own all of the Digimon digivices except the original (not the orange one, but the black and red one; I also own a replica Ash's hat from the first season of pokemon).

+Card games (not so much anymore, but I use to be really into Pokemon and the Yugioh TCG until they ruined them with new rules).

+Posting on AA and NHRV, if that isn't a hobby I don't know what is.

+Browsing 4chan

WoW - Fighting the losing battle not to reside there entirely.
Books - more specifically Horror and Hard Sci-Fi (think more Neuromancer, Phineas Poe, and less Dranonlance) Reading and attempting to Write.
Bad, bad habits, both. Maybe worse than anime.

... and I shall always be a browncoat, through and through.

Let's see (I may run over the alotted number of characters per post here)...

- Star Wars. Everything. Both trilogies, the games, the comics, and the books, though I consider all post RotJ books to be nothing more than glorified fanfiction.

- Lord of the Rings. Though in all honesty, I liked The Hobbit better. All his other stuff is cool too, and the movies were awesome.

- Firefly. I'm a total Browncoat. When I saw Serenity for the first time, I laughed, cried, cheered, and all that stuff.

- Harry Potter. And unlike some people, I have no problem declaring this one. Don't like the movies much, though.

- The Wheel of Time. I freaking love this series. Even the ones where nothing really happens. The background information he's created for his entire world outdoes even Tolkein in many respects.

- Anime/Manga. I wouldn't be here otherwise.

- American comic books. Mostly Marvel, and not to the fanatical extent of some people, but enough that I can pick apart the movies with the best of them.

- Movies. In general. I'm the guy everyone hates to play at Scene It. I'm especially fond of the cult classics like The Princess Bride, Army of Darkness and Willow.

- Language. I suppose everyone's a nerd in whatever field they majored in, but to give you some perspective, back in school when I was getting that major, I would frequently make grammar-related jokes, and my classmates would not only get them, they'd laugh.

- Sci-Fi. In all mediums. I like to write it, too.

- Fantasy. Same as above.

- Video Games. I'm on the lighter side of the "hardcore" spectrum. More than a casual gamer, but I couldn't run a website about them or anything.

- Baseball. Ever since I was a kid. Collect the cards and memorize the stats. The weirder, the better ("The first time a pitcher with 13 letters in his last name struck out a batter with 13 letters in his last name", etc.). I'm a total Red Sox fan, and a Mariner fan since I live in the area. I hate the Yankees, and I don't like the Braves or the Athletics either. Needless to say, I've become a big Tigers fan this postseason.

- Cartoons. I've been made fun of for watching cartoons I'm "too old" for, but I say there's no such thing. I still hate cartoons if they're stupid, though, which means I don't watch Spongebob Squarepants.

- Wikipedia. I hadn't even thought of this until I saw someone else wrote it, but it's totally true. I can spend hours on there.

- Fanfiction. Been into it for years. It's how I got into anime in the first place, matter of fact. I write some too, but I'm one of those unreliable authors who takes forever to finish anything - if I finish it at all. I'm a filthy hypocrite, haha.

- Mythology. A passion of mine since second grade. Greek is my area of expertise, but I've studied Roman, Norse, Chinese and Japanese a great deal also, as well as dabbled in a good dozen others.

I build computers... and play games.

And I post here.

Edit: I suppose spending countless hours on the internet reading shit counts too, though I really consider that an intelligent thing to do and not a nerdy one.

Besides anime and manga? hmmm...

Movies - I study whole filmographies for directors I like, and I usually happen to watch the credits of films to see who was in them (though most people I know skip those). This has also resulted in me looking at the back of DVDs to see who the director was for my entertainment, or who the screenwriter was.

Video Games - Any time I've had an anime dry spell I could turn to these for my entertainment, and video games were my hobby even before I discovered anime, which means this is my true pasttime we're talking about here. 2D action games, Strategy, and Arcade Shooters remain some of my stronger genres (though lately I've been playing a couple of RPGs, which is rare for me).

Music - I listen to lots of 80s music, so that can be filed under "Nerdy" rather easily. No heavy metal for me (though I bought the first three Tool albums at a used cd store for $20 out of experimentation).

Working on my site - This doesn't occur as much as it used to, as I can get lazy spells when trying to work on it, and the whole page was designed by a friend of mine so I could have something extra to take up my time if I so need it.

Writing - This can be considered nerdy if you write, say, fanfiction. I do try to write all kinds of stuff, like novels or short stories, and even a couple of fanfiction. In the long run, its there if I'm feeling a little creative.

Reading - I usually enjoy biographies and psychology books best, though I've read some great fantasy novels by Terry Pratchett back in my high school days.

And I'm off and on when it comes to MMORPGs, so I'm not going to list those. Those take up way too much time for me generally, which is why I don't usually play them, though they were quite fun when I was into them (used to be on FF XI and WoW respectively).

Give me a second here, I'll try to put down everything in one sitting. And also try to put down more than anyone else could, so I guess I'll have to get as obscure as possible:

Anime - That's a given, obviously. I just started watching the stuff regularly again.

YouTube, Wiki - Two sites I can spend hours on. Every link I click opens up five new ones for me to read and explore. I'm a total sucker for the encyclopedia and stupid people in homemade videos.

DDR - I'll never play by myself, but if I'm at a friends place and he/she happens to roll out the DDR pad, I'll usually be the one who ends up hogging the thing. I literally dance till I drop.

Tennis - Playing tennis may not be a nerdy pastime, but I'm pretty obsessed with the sport. To the point where I'll labor over player's stats, rankings, past achievements, current news, etc. I've even recently joined an online forum just for tennis...eww

Counter-Strike - I never legally owned the game, but I hardly ever played either. But for some reason, when Sierra decided to ban me, I felt like I had to get the game. I was too lazy to get me some ways to unban myself, so I settled with the 1.4 version with bots. Yes, I'll occasionally play CS with bots. This may be the nerdiest thing on my list.

Movies - I love movies. I've even gone to the theators alone to catch a movie I desperately needed to see (obviously, no one else I knew was interested at the moment).

Books - I almost never purposefully open a book unless I have to, but once I do, I'm hooked. No way I can let it go until I either finish it or fall asleep trying.

Anything post apocalyptic - Includes books, anime, movies, etc. So many creative ways to paint such a picture, and I love reading or watching how another person would interpret such a future. Especially loved my last read on a kinda "postapocalyptic" world, Brave New World.

Anime Academy - Duh.

Actually, that's all I can think of that I consider "nerdy." Acting dumb isn't nerdy, neither is watching select TV shows. Porn and drinking isn't nerdy, neither are the obscure sports that some people seem to mention as "nerdy."

Pen & Paper/TableTop Role Playing Games: Not exactly D&D. But I've been known to dabble in ShadowRun and Vampire(Both Dark Ages and Modern), but usally, my friends create their own systems and we go from there.

Comic Books: I'm an avid collector and reader of comic books, and I am currently, with one of my friends, working on our own comic book series.

Action Figures: I collect action figures, mostly Super hero ones, quite a few anime/video game ones too. I'm a bit obsessive.

Video Games: Well, This has diministed greatly do to lack of money/interest in most new games. But I still geek out over 2D fighting games.

MMORPGS: Former WoW player, now a City of Heroes player.

and overall, Pop Culture Junkie. From movies, music, TV, whatever. If it is/was/will be a part of pop culture, I study it. I have nothing better to do, so my mind is like agiant encyclopedia of useless pop culture information.

Alsos...cartoons, in particular from the 80's and the DCAU. Star Wars, and most anything Batman related.

Exaulted - A table top RPG that I just started and am getting into. Instead of startin as a wuss like your average console RPG, you can start up as a souped up character of your choice.

Picking up rare books and other things - I just found a first edition of the Call of Cthulu, in mint condition for 30 bucks.

Rarefindit - I guess I can count this as a nerd hobby, but it's also a business that caters to nerds and geeks alike. Rare games, rare books, rare movies, rare music, name it I can find it within reason.

Computers - An aspie like myself can't live without a computer. Putting it together, upgrading it, constantly combining different inputs and taking it apart to learn for about it. If my latest project is successful, I then will have revived my Greymark.

Oh boy...well here goes. Welcome to my Nerdy World of Wonder! :thewave:

FanFictions- I am so big on fanfictions....mostly Naruto/Sasuke mpreg, no lemons or limes (They sicken me) I know more about a lot of series themselves just by reading fanfictions.
Naruto/Sasuke Pairing- I believe this pairing counts. I am SO OBSESSED with this pairing. In the early episodes when they kissed I nearly had a mental breakdown I was so happy. I'm still convinced they have unspoken feelings of eachother and will someday fall in love. o.O Don't argue with me, you might get hurt....
RPGS- I'm rather new on RPGS but I think of myself as a quick learner to things I enjoy. Not to mention I don't have the money to finance this type of obsession. =( But I can love them from afar!
Reading- Of course! I read everything from Cyrano de Bergerac (I love you if you've heard of this, or better yet read it) to Harry Potter. I also love the look and feel of a book. I have so many books that I don't even like, I just thought the cover was pretty.

And those are my biggest nerdy obsessions. Oh there are more, but I'm sure a lot of guys are still stuck on and fearing Naruto/Sasuke mpreg (Don't worry, I don't condone male pregnancies outside of the fantasy world, that frightens me)

Anyways some of my interests besides anime/manga

* Reading: My favorite genres are fantasy/sci fi, historial fiction and classic lit. I also really like mythology
* Classic Movies- Yes I love black and white films. ;)
* Adventure and Fantasy movies
* Foreign films
* Musicals/Broadway
* The Beatles
* Collecting Coins
* I have a small collection of anime action figures. But I think that is more related to my interest of anime. I certainly don't care about keeping them in collectible condition.

I have a few.....when I can a) find time to do them or b) get my lazy arse off the computer/find motivation to get on with it.

Model kits: Probably my first hobby, and I still enjoy doing them when I find time/motivation to. Especially since I forked for an airbrush recently. Maybe I got discouraged by the fact that the Bf109 I was making up for my dad, eve following the instructions, the paint mix for one of the main colours has come out more khaki than green......anyways, I like kits, mainly WWII warbirds (though recently I've been stockpiling oldskool jets, MiG-21 and F-4 FTW!), followed by, mainly WWII tanks. I consider myself not too bad at them either.

Books: Bookshops are seriously dangerous places for my wallet. It is very hard for me to leave a bookshop without a new book.

Reading: Tied in with my book collecting, I do actually like to read books, again when I find time to. I have a large backlog to get through.....I'm currently in the final quarter of Le Comte de Monte Cristo, then it's on to finish All quiet on the Western Front, restart the epic of Gilgamesh, Le Morte d'Arthur etc, etc. I tend to like sci-fi and fantasy more than any other fiction, closely followed by mythology. Information books rate as well, I have a good collection of reference books.

Video Games: My second oldest hobby, I started playing video games on a Commodore 64 back in the late 80's. possibly the one hobby that is taking up most of my time lately. Not much more to say, really.

Tabletop Wargames: Though my involvement in these has waned as of late, I still enjoy a good tabletop wargame. My favourite games are Warhammer 40,000, and BattleTech. However, my friends and myself played Mordheim the most (a Warhammer spinoff), and we tried to get into Necromunda, but by that time it was getting too difficult to get miniatures for it. Made an attempt to get some regular 40K going, but not much came of it. For some reason, BattleTech didn't take off in my group, even though I think it's a superior game.

That's what I can think of of the top of my head. I also like to play music when I make time for it, I tinkle on the piano or squeeze my accordian.

nerd hobbies... I'm not even really sure what counts as a "nerd" hobby.
Take reading for instance, I don't consider reading a "nerd" hobby, but since everyone here seems too...

>I read books, whenever I have spare time that is.
>I'm a bird watcher; I frequently go on early morning hikes and can identify (almost) any North American bird by its call alone.
>I enjoy doing the sun-times crossword and sudoku daily
>I enjoy watching foreign films
>I'm an avid card (bridge, spades, poker...), chess, and go player
>I love trivia and charades

I think thats about it, since I loath conventions, don't play video games, etc.

For everyone who said movies, I don't think that you could classify movies in general as "nerd" hobbies. Movies are very mainstream, like TV. Now maybe there are a few genres that are somewhat classified as nerdy, like Sci Fi or Fantasy, but even Star Wars and Lord of the Rings are so mainstream, that they can't really be classified as nerdy. And I don't really see how music can be classified as nerdy either. As for me:

Videogames: Would around 20 years of gaming and a collection of over 225 games be enough proof? I can never get enough of them, especially RPGs (probably something that people would classify to be the nerdiest of genres, but I don't care).

DDR: Yeah, it's another videogame, but it's a dancing one. Who knew that something that can make you look so stupid can be so fun and take so much skill?

Phantasy Star Online: The only MMORPG I've ever played, but when I did play it, it was my life. Literally. You could have probably found me on there for 18 hours in a day sometimes. Constantly fighting, finding rare weapons, making a clan, goofing around, creating a website for my clan and drawing profiles for each member, creating a funny 80 page comic about my clan, etc...yeah. Probably the nerdiest thing on my list.

Writing/Drawing my Manga Styled Comic: If I had more time on my hands, I would indulge in this hobby more. I've been drawing all my life, and I love the style of art in manga and anime, so it was only inevitable that this would happen.

Anime: Obviously. But I've been viewing a lot more series and movies since when I started. I'm almost up to 50 series now (sigh...yes. I pretty much keep track).

Reading: I don't read as much as I'd like, but it's still another hobby that I enjoy every now and then. I don't care how nerdy people can classify reading to be. If you can't summon up enough brainpower to read a book, then let your brain fry in front of the TV.

Some board/strategy games like Blokus and Checkers. I still remain undefeated in Blokus to this point. However, I need more different people to play against.

And I don't really see how music can be classified as nerdy either. As for me:

But see, the whole idea of being nerdy is taking something to the extreme. I could like the Star Wars movies, even have the DVDs, but that doesn't make me a nerd because I'd be no different from millions of other people around the country, and buying DVDs is just something you do for movies you like.

No, it's when I start collecting the action figures, the video games, the novels and the comic books, watch the movies so many times I can recite them verbatim - and then start reciting them verbatim, arguing with other fans about stupid stuff like whether Greedo shot first or if something like that should matter, memorizing all sorts of weird things like the names of characters who appear onscreen for about three seconds (or don't appear at all), and other stuff along those lines that I become a Star Wars nerd.

This is an example of course, and is true for everything people have listed so far in this thread, reading and movies included.
