I loved the OVA's, the TV series (Universe), and the movies. I'm currently watching GXP, so I'm indifferent on that one. Shin Tenchi Muyo was the worst of them all IMO. Overall, I loved this series and its incarnations. I really attribute TM! to getting me hooked into anime.

Probably my favorite is the first OVA series. Truly funny and entertaining. It was also one of the first anime that I ever saw, so it holds a special place in me. That and the movie Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2: Haruka Naru Omoi. That movie, though vastly different form its other counterparts, is a treat to watch.

Sounds like another pointless harem genre reminiscent of Love Hina and Oh My Goddess!... Is it worth watching? I mean, most of the harem series I've watched usually revolve around semi-perverted humor... Not exactly a type of funny that I appreciate...

Tenchi Muyo came before both of those (the first OVAs were released 1992, Love Hina came around in 2000, and Ah! My Goddess didn't premier until 1993) so it isn't reminiscent of either of them. If anything, Love Hina and AMG are reminiscent of Tenchi Muyo. Second, although there is some "semi-perverted" humor, it isn't overdone like it is in more recent harem anime. Third, the plot in Tenchi Muyo is vastly superior to many anime of its genre.

Actually, I believe Ah! My Goddess was around in manga form for a while before Tenchi. I could be wrong about that though, however, the debate could be made that AMG isn't really a harem show. That, is a different thread.

I have only seen the original Tenchi OVA, and the movies. I think GXP is being released down this way later on this year.....But I enjoyed the OVA quite a bit. I found it to be very amusing, and the sci-fi world created was rather interesting.

The movies, weren't so good. Well, the third one was good, the others didnt' quite feel right. I'm not sure which Tenchi continuity they belong to....as I think there are 2 or 3 different continuities. Again, I could be wrong abou that.

I enjoyed it while the dub was playing on Toonami. Kiyone was always my favorite. :P

It was the first time I ever encountered the now-familiar "wise old master" archetype, in -- Yosho, was it? Yeah, I think so. The thing about Ayeka being betrothed did strike me as a bit off. : )

Well, consider that historically, incest has never been that uncommon among royalty...

I like Tenchi a lot, and I'm quite excited that I'm going to getting the DVDs in the mail soon. The quality is variable from incarnation to incarnation; the OVAs were witty, fun, and had a decent plot and dynamic enough characters that the harem formula barely matters; of course, keep in mind this was made when harem series weren't so disgustingly widespread. Tenchi in Tokyo, on the other hand, is poorly animated, unfunny, and a complete mockery of the characters that were so beloved in the original, although it is definitely not without merit - I actually thought it had the strongest conclusion of the three main continuities.

So yes, I'd say it's worth watching. It's funny and enjoyable, and it's fascinating to see where the harem genre started out before it became entirely overdone.

Tenchi Muyou = <3 Especially the OAVs. The characters are a hell of a lot of fun, and the show is incredibly amusing.

It does hold a lot of similarities to the original Ah My Goddess manga in straight terms of plot and characters (Keiichi/Tenchi, Belldandy/Ayeka, Urd/Ryouko, Skuld/Washuu, at least, in terms of basic personality), but AMG was definately trying to be more artistic and sweet, with bits of comedy thrown in, whereas Tenchi was always more comedy and action, with bits of sweetness thrown in.

Then, there's the Tenchi manga, which splits off completely and goes for pure on parody and comedy. It's also made of win and awesome.

Haven't seen much of the GXP stuff, but wasn't too impressed with what I did see. Magical Girl Pretty Sammy was pure gold, though.

GXP is an insult to the entire Tenchi franchise. Hell, Tenchi in Tokyo wasn't even that good, but it was much better than this crappy spinoff. At least it had an enjoyable and somewhat original story with entertaining characters, not this crap about some whiny kid who somehow becomes a GP officer.

I don't know which Tenchi Muyo it was, but Aeka was nothing like Belldandy in terms of personality. She was bitchy and loud, and acted like a spoiled brat. The only reason I watched some episodes was because of Ryouko. She's quite annoing at times like Aeka, but that's because she's a pirate.

Ayeka may have been rather bitchy and loud, mostly to Ryouko, but to Tenchi and to her family she always presented an ideal Japanese woman, soft-spoken, feminine and graceful, the same ideal that Belldandy represents. Perhaps "personality" was the wrong word to use in that original statement.

I love Tenchi Muyo I didnt mind that staying up late to see would make me late for school, the story was funny and awasome. Ryoko and Sasami and Washu were myy favourites, I found it fanny when Washu had those little Washus on her shoulder. When My mum came up with the Bed Time early rule I couldnt watch Tenchi so I broke the rule and when I started to watch it again I was lost it was Tenchi Universe and he was at school and they were going through portholes to his room and I did not understand it. I want to see it again sometime.

OMG! I almost made this thread! As one of the first animes I was ever introduced to, I too love this series. I've seen each and every one of the incarnations of Tenchi Muyo! and I think Tenchi Universe is my favorite. Never trust Toonami people! They cut out the best parts! Damn them! :complain: My favorite out of all episodes is definetely, without doubt, Hello Baby!! I did "Washu's Lullaby" in a talent show!!! God I love that episode! Damn my vhs for breaking after watching it too much!!!!!!! I had the whole damn season......I gotta buy the dvds......I'm so behind the times!!!! Grrrrr!!!!!!!

Sae-chan

P.S. I'm not even gonna give GXP the time of day! Someone ****ed with the artwork and all I saw were space chicks and none of the same characters so I was like "**** that!".

All I saw was weird drawings of tenchi and alien chick with a Tenchi fetish. Tenchi gone bad!

I've seen the Tenchi Muyo OVA's recently, both the older and the new releases from a few years ago, and I was very pleased with the story, characters and plot.

The diverse plot gave it a very unique feel while still being close to home with thier emotions. I particularly enjoyed the interactions between Tenchi and Ryoko and Tenchi and Aeka. While creating plenty of tension I felt as though I was feeling many ranges of emotions for the characters based on thier life experiences and my own. I was particularly touched by Ryoko's story.

The plot was very interesting although I was a little unsatisfied with it at times. Some things just felt a little rushed or unneseccary.

Watching every episode of an anime series does not make you cool or give you any knowledge of its broadcast history that no one else knows.

And the reason they showed it again - RERUNS. I should know.

Tenchi Muyo is one of my more favourite anime I have. The only tenchi i have seen is the OVA's, although i have seen snippets of the other series's (through occasional viewings of toonami) which have piqued my interest in watching the other series'. Which is the best series to watch do you think? (i.e. GXP, Tokyo, universe etc)

So Panic.

The OVA has the best story and artwork in my opinion. But as far as the adaptions go many will say Universe is superior to the rest.

GXP has a different main character that turns people off but it takes place in the OVA continuity.

How did you know? I could get you a job as program director of Toonami. I will even let you show pure, uncut hentai at 8:00 on a Saturday night. :victory:
