This one has been on my "to buy list" for a long time, I just don't have a lot of money to buy manga and I already have 4 or 5 very series that I like...I don't know how long Pet Shop of Horrors is, but I am still very interested in it. I was wondering if anyone who has read it(or some of it) could tell me what it's like. I just don't want to end up with something I don't like, again*.
I would also like to know how Dragon Head is. I don't care much for the art, but the story sounds good.

The manga Petshop of Horrors is 10 volumes long, and a pretty good read with beautiful artwork. All chapters start with the letter 'D', perhaps because the main character is called Count D. Count D is the owner of a very special petshop in the middle of Chinatown, and all chapters involve people buying an animal at Count D's petshop and forgetting to follow the contract signed with him, which leads to very gorey deaths and a certain detective noticing the relationship between the deaths and Count D's petshop. The artwork is gorgeous, even during the most gruesome scenes. Try giving the first volume a chance, if you like the first you will probably like the rest.
There's a sequel for it as well, called Shin Petshop of Horrors who's only difference is that instead of taking place in Chinatown it takes place in Shinjuku, Japan. As far as I know, this sequel has not been licensed yet.
EDIT: If you liked series Vampire Princess Miyu, X 1999, Alichino and Yami no Matsuei there's a big chance you might like Petshop of Horrors as well. Or if you prefer, you could check the OVAs, which are only four episodes long and give a good idea of what the manga is about.
I would also like to know how Dragon Head is. I don't care much for the art, but the story sounds good.
Dragon Head has been one of my favorite manga for quite a long time. Few things capture the feeling of paranoia, despair and sheer claustrophobia better than Dragon Head. It is hard to tell if you will like it or not, most people are not bothering with it because it is too awesome for them it's very different from the hordes of repetitive shoujo and shounen series out there. If you do end up checking it out and liking it, you could try other wonderful titles by Junji Ito, Hiroki Endo and Katsuhiro Otomo, those three (and hundreds of others as well) explore similar themes to those in Dragon Head.
With both Petshop of Horrors and Dragon Head the key word is atmosphere. They both manage to create that creepiness and eerieness of the unexpected with a touch of the supernatural.

Thanks for the info. I will make sure to keep both of them on my "list" (It's getting pretty long now) I was just looking for something "different". A Dark atmosphere, paranoia, and overall wierdness are just my thing. I have had a taste of Vampire Princess Miyu, and I liked what I saw. I have just felt my manga collection was lacking something, most of what I have what I have is action/comedy and I would just like a change, though I will always love the comedies I have.
Since I got my answer so easily, I was wondering if I could get help on another question I have had for a long time: I love Kanpai! very much (maybe too much) and it is one of my favorites. It was just too short though and I was wondering if there was another manga out there like it in the type of comedy it has.

Err..My school had 'petshop of horrors volume 1..I read it and thanks to that..I am now a vegetarian..><
Anyways I wont say why..because I can't do the spoilers thingy..And I don't want to spoil it for anybody...But my suggestion is to advoid the manga and not waste money on it.
This was my favorite series for a long time. Then it got kind of repetitive......But still! I wanna read more stories of tragidies!!!

I can find places to read manga online, but if I really like it then I want to own it. I really really like looking at different creature designs in anime and I was wondering how they were in Pet Shop of Horrors too.
So far it seems like it would be a good buy. As I have said before, I really do want something new and different. I am also still wanting another manga or animelike Kanpai! I am going to be borrowing Gravitation (maybe there might be a little of the humor in there?) and I am hoping for the best. This would be my first time with Shonen-ai too, so I don't know what to expect.
Thanks for all the info!

The first rule kind of reminds me of the Gremlins movies. I think I will give this series a try, but for my next new series I have decided on Fruits Basket. I'm sure hope it's as good as the anime(or better). I'm still waiting for Gravitation, so hopefully I can have it by this Thursday(26th).

It was aired in GMA years ago, back when they were frantically airing every anime they could grab.

Thank goodness my cat doesn't turn into one of those things...

I really wanted to read this one because it seemed like a real "creature" manga that I could enjoy. I was just browsing Tokyo Pop's horror manga section and came across this one. I am always up for anything wierd and the horror genre tends to have a lot of the wierd. When I went to buy manga there was a buy "3 get 4th free sale". I had trouble deciding what to get and almost got Pet Shop Of Horrors. Instead I took home Arm Of Kannon. Upon getting home and reading the back of the manga, I realized that I had made some mistake. I read up on quite a few horror manga and I think I got Arm of Kannon confused with another manga. It was then that I was thinking " I should have gotten Pet Shop...".
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for other creature filled manga. I am only looking for really good* series, all because of my poorness. I don't want to use my money on something average(something I have done way too many times).

That's a sad story... so far the only "creature" anime/manga I ever liked were Pet Shop of Horrors and Digimon. Wait for someone more knowledgeable to come around this thread.

I would like to see more anime and manga with creative creatures, but there don't seem to be very many. I do have the first volume of +Anima though. I doesn't have creatures, but peeople with creature traits. I only have the first volume and its kind of an "introduction to characters" begining with little background information with each character. I plan on getting the second volume some time, I don't know when though. I don't know where the story is headed and it is a break from all the "hardcore" fantasies with demons and magic. The artwork is also some of the prettiest I have seen and the characters have a great amount of detail to them.
Also, have you seen the Pet Shop of Horrors anime? In your oppinion, is the manga better than the anime?

I've only run through the manga when I saw it on sale, I didn't buy it back then coz I wasn't into collecting manga (yet). Later I saw the anime and I though I should've bought the manga... point is, I loved the anime and I will buy the manga when I chance upon a copy.

Yup, it's called Mokona. But MKR doesn't revolve around the creatures.

The manga is better than the anime, simply because there's more of it.
I haven't bothered to post in this thread yet, because Rove's said everything I could ever say about this, but...
The anime is a mere four episodes. Those four episodes are awesome, though. They focus purely on the horrific side of the Pet Shop. The anime got me into the manga, and it's still one of my sentimental favorites. Interested tidbit of information, but the anime was originally released in short ten or fifteen minute blocks of animation on late night cable TV, instead of as full episodes. I think it was released on an MTV-like channel.
The manga has that creepiness and horror, but it also has a lot more humor and some cute moments as well. I absolutely love the manga, because it is fun but thought-provoking as well.
If you like the anime, you'll like the manga, since those four episodes are taken straight from four episodes from the manga.
If you get the anime, make sure to try it both subtitled and dubbed. They're both very enjoyable and bring out different aspects of the Count. For instance, he seems a lot creepier and borderline evil in the Japanese.
