View Full Version : D.Gray-man
Tremolo

The first episode of the anime adaptation of one of the better Shounen Jump manga of recent years has hit in RAW form, and it looks very promising indeed.
D.Gray-man itself is kind of a cross between Tim Burton, Ghostbusters, Hellraiser, Fullmetal Alchemist and Bleach and features lots of bizarre monsters, exorcisms, cursed eyes and England. I enjoyed what I read of the manga and the anime looks rather good and worth a watch if you like that sort of thing, which I do.

Yeah I am excited about this one but wonder how they are going to treat it since the manga is still ongoing. Will it be a long shonen jump series or will it end before the manga is over?

Not only is it ongoing, but the mangaka is ill and as such it's on indefinite hiatus. There looks like there's enough material to cover 26 episodes at the very least, but I certainly don't imagine it'll go into Naruto, Bleach or One Piece territory. In terms of action and story content for a shounen series, it's more like Fullmetal Alchemist than those in the DBZ mould. The production values look very high, so I imagine this is going to be more of an FMA (used as an example once again, I'm so original >_>) kind of deal with the anime producers inventing their own ending with the mangaka's permission.

I personally hope it does take that route. I mean some might argue that it will lose the mangaka original intent but I am not in the mood for another long never ending series. But hopefully they create a good ending. I am usually okay with open endings but these don't work as well with action series.
Some totally crazy villian designs appear in this series. Heck, the Earl of the Millenium is crazy looking enough. But, its another series I can't get enough of. Go go Allen Walker!

This series ought to be as popular as the big three Shounen series. It's got a very cool premise, and above average, if a tad repetetive dialogue. I don't like to download RAWs but I'll definitely grab this once it gets subbed. This series has some very bizarre, and surreal imagery and I'm curious to see how it is depicted in living color. I also hope that the live action will give the TV series a little bit more coherency than the manga.

I just watched the subbed version, and to Tremolo's list of movies and anime he uses as reference, I would include a bit of Hellsing.
This anime could go in so many different directions. It could turn into a Naruto or a Fullmetal Alchemist. I just hope they get it right, because it has some interesting elements to it.

I just got done withe eps 1 and i was impressed with it. It does have that FMA and Bleach feel to it. Its has an intresting premise, so i will continue with this series.

Hmmm... I might give it a try because of all the recommendations given, as well as the curious plot... I like the feel to it... The Dark Religious Organization... Noah's Ark... The Millenium Earl... Oooh... Pretty eerie, or weird depending on your point of view...

First episode: loved it. Right from the opening I knew I was going to like this. Loved the music (OP and ED), loved the characters, liked the comedy, and am interested to see where this goes. Good times, good times.

If it's anything like Fullmetal Alchemist, then sign me up. Plus, the whole exorcism bit is a neat concept that I haven't seen yet. Too bad that the project isn't handled by Bones though. And for some reason, the big fat guy in the background reminds me of that crazy Perriot La Fou guy from Cowboy Bebop, even though he's probably nothing like him.

if Allen hadnt talked too much b4 he attacked that monster, which reminded me of Sailor Moon, I'd really love this series (but I do like it).

I have only read two volumes, but it does have a more "mature" feel like FMA and not Bleach or Naruto. The series is something (along with Deathnote) that SJ needs to break up the pace a bit. I would really like to see the show when it's subbed, I didn't even know the show was out yet. In a way it reminds me of Hikaru No Go: It doesn't seem to be getting the attention it deserves.

Episode 2 was funny in spite of itself. Because honestly, an absent-minded lead doctor/scientist or the crafty master/sensei shirking his duties to dump on his student are nothing new. I gave it some chuckles though.
Otherwise, this was set-up for the story to come. Allen makes it to the Exorist Headquarters and learns a bit more about his funky arm and his abilities. He also learns about Millenium Earl and the exorcists' role in the grand scheme. We also meet more of the main characters shown in the OP and get a glimpse of Allen's Master who looks badass, if not a bit quirky.
I have to say, despite the cliched nature of this show, I'm really enjoying it. I look forward to seeing more from all the characters, but especially meeting the villians depicted in the OP sequence. After that, it's just a matter of holding my interest once everyone is introduced and familiar.

Episode 1-5
While interesting at first, this has shown no signs of genius or potential. At its best, it is a good shounen action anime; at its worst... Well, I don't plan on finding out.

Yeah i kinda got bored with this series after eps 4, well it started out ok, its feels like the show is not going to go anywhere intresting.

The arcs are playing a little out of order from the manga. On well, we'll get to Miranda Lotto soon, who is practically my favorite character.

I'd say this is the best supernatural/shounen action show this season... though it doesn't have much competition (Busou Renkin? give me a break).
Truth be told D Gray Man seems set to be one of the better supernatural/action shows in several seasons... there's not really much original here, and it probably won't reach the same levels Fullmetal Alchemist did, but at least it's managing to draw that comparison.

Before we start putting in the comparison notes out, I'd like to see a little more into the 1st arc. While the show does start off slow, by experience I don't think I should throw in the towel just yet....
...Man I'm cliche, lol.
Since I've never read the actual manga, I think I have a better eye for watching since I have nothing to compare it to, so it just seems that much alluring, though that kind of thinking has its ups and downs.
The only thing I didn't like at all so far was the episode eight. It wasn't very funny... though the blowpipe scene was certainly hilarious.
I'll give it a few more episodes. The overall plot is very interesting, though.
I think one of the things that hurts this show a bit is the 6:00 timeslot the show has. Some gore and violence was edited out of episode 9, and I'm kinda worried about events that will happen later in this arc. I could be a bit biased on this bit since I have been following the manga. Edits none the less kinda make me frowny face.
But hey, at least Road and Miranda's voices are good.

This anime comes across to me as generic. There is nothing particularily standout about it, it's just kinda meh.
Also the manga seems no better, and actually goes as far as to steal panel layout from other better manga. There is a big website that I've seen that takes shots of the D-Gray Man manga and puts it beside other, better and older manga that has the characters in like the exact same position. Kinda sad to be honest.
