A little late, I know.

I didn't watch them before because they were coming out when I was moving to montana and I just never got around to aquiring them. My opinion of the series had then been only fairly positive, because after a good beginning I thought it kind of leveled off into 'only good'. I just watched 12 and 13 and it pretty much changes everything. Now I repledged my faith in Haruhiism and decided I need to rewatch it. But I can't decide if I should rewatch it in the order it came out or in the Haruh order. What do you think?

Also, what IS the haruhi order?

The Haruhi order is for the most part the way the anime relates to the novellas, although it does leave several gaps, since it covers the first novella completely (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya), the second as the plot for the Mikuru movie, two chapters of volume 3 (Lone Island Syndrome and The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya a.k.a. the baseball episode), a chapter of volume 5 (The Day of Sagittarius) and 2 chapters of volume 6 (Live a Live and the Mikuru Movie). For the record, there are currently 8 Haruhi Suzumiya novellas.

Obviously, the movie is the only one that does not follow the chronology since Haruhi considers it episode 0 and in reality it should follow the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumuya episodes in the numbering system.

If you are ever interested in reading the novellas, a team is translating them and are fairly advanced with the translations.

Well I know what the Haruhi order IS but what IS the Haruhi order, was what I was asking. I just didn't feel like watching all the next episode previews to find out.

Although I don't think it will have the same impact viewed in chronologic order.

Very true. Watching it in order kinda takes a lot of the fun out.

So, let me get this straight, if you watch this show in a chronological order, much like that presented in the novels that it is based on, it becomes a less enjoyable show and in fact suffers due to the fact that the story is being told in a way that actually makes sense.?

Does it occur to anyone that this is a very major sign of a poor storyline? I mean honestly, no matter how blinded you are by the show you at least have to accept that any show where the story is told in order and isn't as enjoyable as the episodes randomly jumbled has some significant issues.

Does it ever occur to you that maybe some people like it just as much in normal order?

And does it occur to anyone else that they are getting tired of all this Haruhi debate?

-_-

And this thread probably should have remained in the old Haruhi thread...

Nope, it is a major sign of an incomplete storyline.

Kyoto Animation did the right thing by putting them in that order to maximize impact given the limited amount of episodes at its disposal.

Think about it. If you ever watched Sunset Blvd., Memento, Run Lola Run or any other movie where the story does not go in chronological order, part of their appeal and impact comes from that storytelling technique. Those movies would not have had the same impact if they were told in the "proper" sequence, and yet they are considered by both public and critics alike as grade A movies.

I don't think there's another anime out there that is as unfairly critisized for being 'too popular' as much as Haruhi is. If you're going to critisize it for the "order it should be in" versus the "order it's presented" then it seems like you're clutching at straws.

Following on from SC's movie examples, there's of course Pulp Fiction, where if it had played in order, then it would finish with Butch (Bruce Willis) riding off on his bike, and that wouldn't be fitting, but it doesn't diminish the story as that's not the ending presented in the movie.

Now I've only watched Haruhi once through, but just by judging from the foreshadowing by way of past-tense and the links between the episodes, I'd say watching it in the order the directors intended would definitely have more impact. Probably nice for a rewatch in the 'actual' order, but it would definitely be a bit odd.

The disorganized sequence was fun the first time around, since you were always wondering what the hell was going on, but for subsequent viewings, I find it more fun to watch it in actual order. Either way, it's still an entertaining experience.
