Well, I'm a fan of most of Takahashi's works and I'd have to say that Ikkoku places as my personal favorite of all of the series she's done. The story has a definite arc to it, from beginning to middle to end. It's not over the top, or action oriented, or anything else that a lot of people focus on in her later works like Ranma or Inu-Yasha. Instead, it focuses on telling a romance story exactly as it needs to be told instead of putting other stuff that isn't as related in there or distracting from that thrust of the story. Don't get me wrong, I love Ranma which has all of those, but Ikkoku does an infinitely better job of enthralling the reader with the characters and dynamics. Plus, it has a clear, definite end, which is nice for a story like this. It wraps all the various threads together in a manner that does satisfy the reader. It is worth every penny spent on buying the manga (says the person who still needs to buy the series instead of checking it out from the library).

All I have to say, other than this is one of the best manga of all time, is that the story really picks up from volume 9 until the end of the series.

I read the first 5 volumes in a book store awhile back and really want to finish it. It's been on my mind to just go out and buy all the volumes I can find and order the rest online but buying 15 volumes at once is a bit costly.
