Today marks day one of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan (or tomorrow for some people depending on their lunar calendar) . From sunrise to sunset, Muslims do not eat or drink (including water.) Following this month of fasting, we have a holiday known as Eid-Al-Fitr, which is simple terms is like christmas, we exchange gifts and what not. Though the real celebration is for the first four pillars of Islam:
1.) Belief in Allah and Prophet Mohamed is his Messenger
2.) Pray 5 times a day
3.) Zakat (Give money to the poor)
4.) Fast During the month of Ramadan.
We have a fifth pillar that states if we have the financial means to make pilgrimage to Hajj which is located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This year my family is performing this in December. We celebrate this pillar along with the other four in Eid ul-Adha.
so yeah i was bored, and figured i'd inform you guys about the starting of Ramadan and a little information on what it all means.
