Hello everyone and welcome to my thread. My name is Hiroshi Takamatsu and I will be teaching you about my Japanese Culture.First let me start off by saying I was born in Yokota,Japan and from Okinawa,Japan currently living in the USA at the moment but only for a year soooo..2nd off school is pretty good there in Japan i mean if your of japanese blood and go to japanese schools not saying anyone cannot get into a japanese school but they would have to know good japanese know what im saying?Anyways, while i was living there in Japan in my place Okinawa its a very wonderous place indeed the cherry blossom trees the Neo Park Zoo and everything the people, friends and many things BUT!!!Were getting off subject so let me start off by telling you about the culture i was raised up in.:flyzapper:
Let's Begin Shall We:
Ok so first off when I was about 5yrs old I was you know the average kid going to Kindergarden and doing lots of fun sorts of stuff with the the teachers and whatever!Later on come in Middle School its not the same stuff I always did Track and Tennis it was very fun especially meeting new friends and going on Field trips and learning the languge and writing styles of Japan.
During those times I always went to festivals like the Boys and Girls Festival which is Traditional and Moon Festival I would go out with my friends and eat lots and lots of Yakisoba and Yakitori and Soba and whatever i got my hands on like Sushi and Wasabi(ooo its spicy!)I would always sleep on tatami mats which are very flat so its not really comfortable like matresses,beds,etc.Um..
My father was a very strict man but my mother was soft and kind as a dove.
He would always ask where I went at all times and who I was hanging out with(still does today..sorta)Here I am at 16 in High School and Tennis and Archery its the basic things I do now in that school.Work is harder and you know.
I'm also taking Kendo training and Karate classes i just started Karate 2 weeks ago and Kendo 4 weeks ago.Kendo is where you practice with wooden sticks and im pretty sure everyone knows what Karate is right?Anyways,I basically fluent in Japanese and i know lots of English I love Kimonos especially for wearing for the festivals and at times like some Holidays mines is black and white its really cool!Honestly,I dont think im talking about some of the culture just the culture i raised up in and still do today to this day.
So I apologize just telling you some stuff but if you have any questions about the Japanese Culture please ask sorry if i wasted your time.Gomenasai!*bows*

Thanks a lot, it's really neat learning what it's like to really live in Japan, instead of just watching anime. I'm curious to hear a bit more about what school is like over there, could you explain some more?

Hey no problem its what im here for I was just looking up anime on the internet then i found this site and decided to check it out then joined it^_^; heh.but um yes school is the subject you want to know so i'll explain it...School for me there we had in High school 6 periods lunch as always was in the middle and you were allowed to eat in the courtyard or inside the cafe if you wanted to i always ate outside because there was this cherry blossom tree i always sat under and hangout with my friend i didnt have much friends there so yeah^_^;But um the classes are pretty easy and basic stuff like Math,World History,Health,P.E etc...i took extra curricular activites at the school like i mention was Tennis and Archery which i love Archery very much but im more of a Tennis player the teachers are kinda strict depends on attitude and such not school that i went to started at 7:00am-2:00pm so it was tiring as always P.E was always kickball, excersing,Track but thats basically of me oh and when you entered the class you had to put your shoes in a cuboard and wear these weird sandals to prevent dirt or anything in the classroom so everyone was all healthy...BUT what else would you like to know?:melting

Actually, I noticed a severe LACK of food vending machines in public when I was in Japan. And this was in OSAKA!
The only food vending machines I saw were a few ramen machines by the cafeteria on our campus and one lone Pocky machine in a crowded shopping area. No chips, soda, or candy. Ever.
That's what tapponyaki stands are for.

Here's a question:
What is it like living in Japan and going through the school system when you're not fluent in Japanese? You mentioned you went to a Japanese school, not an American one, and implied you've spent most of your life there.

I already told you what it was like living the school system there...god dont you people listen?Everyone's still on me yet Mara said to break it off but yet people wont shut up about it but fine if you must..yes im not that fluent in japanese and I had an american teacher there translate some of the language so i could understand more of what they were saying I too have been to Japan and lived there my whole life so dont get down on me like that...anyways I took Tennis,Track, and Archery there and yes its a common thing for a japanese high school to have those 3 extracurricular activities i started out at 7am-2pm for a normal school time route i would go to class have to take off my shoes and wear these slippers to prevent dirt and such getting in i dont know why but they want a clean enviroment i suppose i learned the writing styles such as Katakana,Kanji and Hiragana but i mostly write in Kanji or Katakana so yeah I also had P.E where we'd be outside running track the whole time which was tiring^_^;but as for the classes its the normal stuff about Japanese Culture and mathmatics,History,Health,Biology everything normal for a school nothing out of the ordinary

- Paragraph as a whole: The Space bar, the comma and the period keys are all your friends. Please use them properly.
- 2nd sentence: Shouldn't it be "Takamatsu Hiroshi"? Unless Hiroshi is your family name, which I highly doubt.
- 3rd sentence: There is no Yokota, Japan. There is an American Air Force Base called Yokota AFB, which is located in Tokyo. And Okinawa is pretty damn far away from Tokyo. So you were born in Yokota, then moved to Okinawa? And where in the USA are you going to school now and why?
- 4th sentence: What is your native language?
Let's Begin Shall We:
Ok so first off when I was about 5yrs old I was you know the average kid going to Kindergarden and doing lots of fun sorts of stuff with the the teachers and whatever!Later on come in Middle School its not the same stuff I always did Track and Tennis it was very fun especially meeting new friends and going on Field trips and learning the languge and writing styles of Japan.

He would always ask where I went at all times and who I was hanging out with(still does today..sorta)Here I am at 16 in High School and Tennis and Archery its the basic things I do now in that school.Work is harder and you know.
- 1st sentence: I do not believe they call it "kindergarten" in Japan.
- 2nd sentence: What happened to elementary school? That's where you should have learned the basics of the language and the writing, not middle school.
- 4th sentence: Why did you sleep on tatami? Were you too poor to afford futons?
- 2nd sentence: Her name is "Mana". And if you've lived there your whole life, you should at least have attained a higher level of fluency than you have displayed here.
- The rest of that paragraph: You completely fail to use any workable punctuation to differentiate between sentences, so I'll have to address it as a whole. And didn't they tell you why they want to keep the school environment clean? The value of cleanliness should have been instilled in you from the very beginning of your education. Not to mention the fact that you are required to help clean the classrooms and keep things in a neat order. I suppose you didn't understand why you had to do that either. And I highly doubt that there would be a class specifically on Japanese culture in high school. University perhaps, but not high school.
I don't really understand why you insist on keeping up this act, but as long as you do, people here will deride you for it. So don't be surprised.
silan
09-22-2006, 04:05 PM
yes im not that fluent in japanese
Well, that's all you had to say.
Do you know why people were getting on you? Because you were trying to lie to everyone. So don't you dare get upset with us. Did you really think no one would call you on it, or catch you in the lie? This is a freakin' anime site, where half the people on here are obsessed with Japan, and, thus, have most likely studied Japanese to some extent.
Not being fluent in a language isn't anything horrible or bad. And being fluent doesn't automatically make you "cool." So faking something like that to get "coolness" points is just silly. Don't pretend to be something you're not. Talk honestly on here, and you'll be accepted.
Continue to try lying to everyone, and you'll be shunned.
It's your choice.
Judging by your other comments, you'll probably think my advice is harsh, but it's the truth, plain and simple. Take it or leave it. It's up to you.
i suppose i learned the writing styles such as Katakana,Kanji and Hiragana but i mostly write in Kanji or Katakana
Hiragana's pretty important. You might want to try practicing more with that too.

No soda vending machines? Wow, I've got to say I saw them everywhere. Well I guess I should say vending machines that offered drinks, but ones with coke were really common where I went. I'm surprised to hear that you never saw soda ones.

In all fairness, kuzu, that "suppose" might have been part of the previous sentence. But I don't know. I just can't tell without punctuation.

Oh come on, you know full well that it was a part of the previous sentence. Even if the kid is lying (which I don't doubt), there is no way he'd be dumb enough to give himself away with something as simple as that. At least with his little to no knowledge on Japan/Japanese he can try to fool some people into buying it. Obviously not you two, but some.

Alright. You're right. I know that the "suppose" is supposed to go with the previous sentence.
Thanks for ruining the subtlety of my hint about the importance of punctuation. Now I've actually spelled it out for him! :(
