Basically, if I go through the types of anime I really like, my favorite genres is when it is a mix of Fantasy and School Life. For example, I really liked D.N.Angel and Fruits Basket. Now that I am done with both series, I am longing for more. Is there any thing else anyone can reccomend that is in a similar category?

Bonus points are if there is a dash of romance, and/or a good set of characters.

Thank you for your time. :)

Based on your preferences I'd highly recommend...

Ouran Highschool Host Club
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Kamichu!

I'd secondarily recommend...
Karin
Full Metal Panic/Fumouffu/TSR
Mahou Tsukai Tai (Magic User's Club)
Binbou Shimai Monogatari

Maybe Fancy Lala? You'd have to also like Magical Girls too, but it has all those elements, and plenty of character. It's a personal favorite of mine.

Hope that helps (I'll try to come up with another one if I can think of it).

When it comes to school life, I'll fully recommend GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka). It's absolutely the best school related series I've seen, as it's funny as hell.

A lot of people at AA would recommend Azumanga Daioh, even though I personally didn't like it. It's an anime that clicks with certain people, and certain people can hate it as well. However, if you're one that enjoys it, you'll love it.

Actually, both of these series don't have a ton of fantasy, but trust me when I say that they can be well worth watching.

I second the library. you might be surprised how on target those reviews are (at least in my opinion). Although there are many in the upper 80's that are just as good. Once again IMO.

Fortunately, this also happens to be one of my favorite anime genres though I usually prefer the Romance/Comedy genre... I'll share some of my favorites...
Let's begin with...
Cardcaptor Sakura... It's a pretty cute anime to watch... You should give it a chance... I definitely loved it...
Then of course... Ouran High School Host Club... It's not fantasy, but you should definitely watch it... As they say, "Laughter is the best medicine".
One more thing, Haruhi is also the cutest character ever!!!
Yes... Thank you for reminding me... GTO... It's absolutely the best!!! No fantasy here as well... but the series is by no means boring... I just love Urumi Kanzaki!!!

Mm, yes I know. The library is very helpful, but I am mainly asking if there are any other animes that are similar to my specific preferences of genres. Even animes you don't like are worth suggesting.

Thank you so much everyone for the suggestions so far! Keep them coming! :o

Eh... I don't exactly understand this cookie emoticon, but :cookie:.

Unfortunately for the Library, it's hard to tell from just the title and grade what genre(s) a show is in... at least having some titles to look at the reviews for gives you a narrower field to start off in. Reading a review for Hajime no Ippo or Vision of Escaflowne - which are great shows, no doubt, that deserve their high marks - still won't help this poster.

Secondarily, not every show is in the Library, particularly ones that haven't finished their run yet. :)

So I don't see a problem with people asking for guidance like this... he didn't just come and say "what are some good anime titles" he specified genre and gave examples.

There are PLENTY of school life shows out there, but not all of them are created equal.

If you want random insanity, Pani Poni Dash is a good choice.
If you want shoujo insanity,Ouran High School Host Club
Straight shoujo storyline: Bokura ga ita, Brother dear brother or Hana Yori Dango (Boys over flowers)
If you want shounen insanity, School Rumble or Cromartie High School
If you fancy Yuri vibes with your anime, try Maria-sama ga Miteiru or Revolutionary Girl Utena
If you fancy Yaoi vibes with your anime, try Princess Princess (YUCK! >_<)
If you want a nicely animated straight High School romance, try Ocean Waves (Umi ga kikoeru) or Kare Kano
If you dig episodic series, try Azumanga Daioh or Here is Greenwood.
If you want more adult-like comedy and more mature situations, try GTO
If you love smut in your anime, Green Green is a good choice.
If you like fantasy or sci-fi in your high school environment, you could try Video Girl Ai.
If you like longer series in a high school environment, try Kimagure Orange Road (including the first movie!!!!)
If you want sports oriented high school series, Touch, H2 and Yawara! are the best choices.
If you love crossgender in your soup, try Ranma 1/2 or I my me, strawberry eggs.
If you like lovable womanizers who cheat on their alien girlfriends, try Urusei Yatsura.

There is plenty more, but those are the best start when you want the backdrop to be high school. Unfortunately, once you see those, most of the rest will seem very generic.

What you're looking for is Revolutionary Girl Utena. Unlike Escaflowne/Twelve Kingdoms, a student is not transferred to a magical land and is forced to spend their time there for the rest of the show. A proportion of time you spend at school dealing with your romance/drama, and then off you go to swordfighting in a magical land. What you might like the most out of Utena is that, the characters will have some issues in their school Life in terms of romance/friendship/etc (hence drama), then they will go to this fantasy land to duel in attempt to solve the issues. This fantasy land is not just some magical land thrown in for adventure, it's a place where people's inner turmoil come alive and try to revolutionize the world into what they regard as something that should be right and remain eternal.

There are a lot of good characters, most of them I think are fillers since they don't have strong impacts on overall story, but since the story as a whole was 'dule of the week' until like episode 30, that won't be so much of a problem. At least most of these characters stay with you until the very end. And you'll like how there's a LOT or romance, but it's more of a shoujo vibe. Maybe I got familiar with Ouran, but it didn't bother me as much.

But the show's bit annoying (sometimes a LOT), since they have an immense amount of reused scenes, like 5 min of every episode is using scenes that has been used before. And just remember that this 'magical land', is really just a dueling arena, so you won't see many dragons, just weird symbolic objects and sword fighting...

Revolutionary Girl Utena if you want something beautiful and deep
Psychic Academy if you just want something fun
Video Girl Ai if you want sci- school
Those Who Hunt Elves if you want something funny
Ouran High School Host Club if you want something awsome to watch!:ninja:

Uhm... Those who hunt elves is not a "school life" anime, and psychic academy is mediocre at best, in my opinion... the art is bland, the story is bland and the fanservice is overused.

Try Gakuen Alice if you want a lesser-known series. It's one of those "students with special powers" -type shows (with a dose of cuteness), but it's pretty good.

If the fansubbing group could ever finish it, that would be great.

Such a shame, since it is indeed a cute, fun show to watch.

Yes, I remember now... Long time since I last watched this show... Gakuen Alice... It should be worth a shot... Hmmmm... Not only is it cute... It also has a darker side... Though the romance in the series is somewhat subtle and one-sided... But its really funny... in a cute, childish sort of way... I especially love Hotaru and Jinno-sensei...

Yes, I've seen some Gakuen Alice, check it out!

It's from Takahiro Omori, the director of the previous series I mentioned (Fancy Lala) ironically enough. He also directed Koi Kaze and Hyper Police, which I enjoyed both, though both are not highly recommended given what you're looking for (the former is quite challenging and not easy to recommend, but at least well directed, while the latter was just loads of fun). His latest is Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl) and is also directing a followup series called Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori as we speak.

I do hope the fansubs for Gakuen Alice are completed in the next few years, because I love it! Go Naisho!

Basically, Gakuen Alice also has my recommendation.

Gakuen Alice... yes, I remember. I actually completed the series... I loved it... however, the ending was a bit defficient... but since many havent finished it yet, I wont spoil it... but seriously, its a great series to watch...

I've seen many series with endings that flubbed over, and I've even let them go without much complaint (I'm looking at you Kare Kano), but at least you said it was good overall....how did you see it all!? Show me!

lol, j/k! But I look forward to seeing the rest of it, that's for sure (only seen 7 episodes).

Indeed, it was funny as hell. There was a certain line that I liked from episode one where he said it to his female student. It made me laugh so hard when I heard it because at first I thought that description fit her perfectly for what she did to him.:hyper:

I would recommend Ouran High School Host Club too because its in a school setting where Haruhi is in a different type of fantasy adventure since she being from middle class enter the world of the rich.

Another one would be Read Or Die its listed as more Sci-fi since the bad guys use machines/robots. We see the girls in school in some episodes and the girls have power to control paper and use it as transportation, weapons, etc.

For some reason i don't think iv'e met anyone that didn't like Cowboy Bebop.
If you like school stuff and a bit of comedy Great teacher Onizuka is good, and for a school type thing with powers go for Naruto, even though it's very long and a ninja school :)

I really need to start watching bleach actually, I haven't seen that yet because iv'e been too busy catchng up on naruto and watching GTO and Champloo

To our last three posters:

The guy asked for anime with high school background and some fantasy, not superheroic agents of good, nor space mercenaries, nor manga. Stick to recommending what was asked to begin with.

Thank you, soundchazer.

Some very good and helpful answers were Kamichu, Gauken Alice, Naruto, and the Meloncholy of Haruhi....But thank you all for most responces anyway.

I am not a big fan of action-packed, but I do love a good adventure and fantasy. If anyone can add on to the already suggested fantasy/school life/(romance?), I would be very pleased.

If you want it to be a little easier, I am also a fan of young-adult romances, (with comedy is good too) just as long as the story isn't...well... shallow. I plan on seeing Ouran High-School Host Club, of course, as everyone raves about it, His and Her Circumstances is high on my list, I want to learn more about Bokura ga Ita, Honey and Clover sounds really good too. If you know more of this genre as well, please post.

Mind you, I know that there are threads concerning romantic comedies. I know how to find reasonably good anime. I am just asking for specifics.

I am still thankful for your opinions though!

Come to think of it, Stellvia is at least in part a school life series, albeit with sci-fi instead of fantasy. Plus it's one of my favorites.
