View Full Version : What is the coolest thing you bought at a convention?

I've been to my first convention finally just a week ago (Animefest 2006) and noticed all the stuff in the dealer rooms, like cels and even art books were sold there beyond the anime and manga.

I bought a $200 Gunbuster storyboard collection complete with sketches included, and it was nice to see Gunbuster collectables of that nature there. I also got an Angel's Egg artbook along with 3 posters (Hyper Police, Gunbuster, Nadia). Finding older anime posters was definitely difficult for me in the past, I'll say that much...and hopefully I can get some more cool stuff (maybe start buying some cels from a favorite series) in latter appearances.

What did you guys get in some of your travels? Let me know, I can only imagine what finds there could be!

A Statue of Morrigan from Darkstalkers variant style with yellow hair, it's sitting on my book shelf next to my Manga tower.

I did forget to mention all the cool figures I saw (lots of cool Evangelion, DOA and Macross), but Capcom definitely houses some of the best, especially if we're talking Darkstalkers. I've even seen some interesting model kits too.

I bought a shuriken and two kunais at Otakon 2006. I obviously need them. You know, for assassination purposes.

Wow, plenty of weapons...don't hurt me! Oh wait, that's a parasol...

But seriously, that neat to see there's some weapon apprecators in our midst, I've seen how cool the weapons market can be. I'm not very good at assassination, so I could use somebody like Grasshopper to help out...

And nothing passes the day away like some trading cards, which is something a number of people could probably attest to (too bad I haven't seen NANA yet though).

Since I've only ever been to one convention, I'd have to say that snagging that $200+ Z Gundam boxset (complete with 9 mobile suit shaped pencil sharpener figures, a poster, and a guidebook) for just $40 takes the cake. It's the least I could ever hope to find a 50 episode strong series on sale for.

...kitana...

hmm...maybe I should start pushing "Daito"...no one pushes "Daito"

Hey, so how's your DAITO? GOOD? COOL!

Of course I'm willing to bet any sword you buy at an anime convention is just a larger and significantly less durable kitchen knife.

You can have your swords, just don't swing 'em around too much, k?
It's serious business!

As for the Kunai and Shuriken, go nuts. I'm don't care what happens to you if you **** up with those.

That being said I have yet to go to a convention! Until theres one actually near here(I missed the ICON one...) I won't be going to one for awhile!

Until then I have...TUBE TECHNOLOGY THE INTERNET!!

Man, I want that rabbit plush! And I do agree that getting Zeta Gundam with a few extras for $40? that's like less than $1 an episode! But as far as weapons are concerned, at least protect your eyes, that can hurt.

At Otakon 2005 I picked up a lovely Ah My Goddess: The Movie cel of Belldandy.

Milkymagic

Wow, that's a lot of Utena for so little cash, I don't even know how to calculate such an insane deal (definitely got the Chobits goods going on too, I thought that show was funny).

Plenty of anime cels too, Ah My Goddess! had some nice looking ones, and Rose of Versailles is definitely vintage, you guys need to take a pic of your cels, as I'm pretty excited to know what they look like (no pressure if you don't want to! I'll take a description if you're ok with that).

If I were to start a cel collection, I definitely want a cel from Angel's Egg, and proabably Gunbuster (given how insanely hard it is to find cels for it). Even when I looked for Bubblegum Crisis cels, a cel with Vision singing fetched $800, which meant I needed to get rich fast. And if lady luck smiles upon me, here's hoping I one day bump into a cel of The Wings of Honneamise anywhere in my lifetime...

My mommy agreed to it. She asked her first. hehe I felt special lol

Okay I seriously NEED to know! WHAT IS A CEL? Are you talking about a cell phone case or what? I'm so lost! I've heard of it on ebay plenty but wtf is it?!

"A transparent celluloid sheet on which a character, scene, etc., is drawn or painted and which constitutes one frame in the filming of an animated cartoon: may be overlapped for change of background or foreground."

That is the definition in the dictionary, and it's either spelled "Cel" or "Cell" to be honest, but I prefer one L because two Ls makes it look like the scientific term, or the place were prisoners are held.

lol, I'll stop it! Basically it's a piece of the production, a single scene from an animation you know and love. Have you ever wanted to capture a single shot of a particular anime and preserve it in something? It's expensive and of acquired taste, and it's understandable if there's people who don't like to, there's people who prefer just to watch anime and not look too far beneath it and ruin the magic (in some cases). But that's just my take.

To put the Cel thing in simpler terms:

Remember back in elementary school when you used to make an animation by drawing a series of drawings that were all just a little bit off, and then flipping through them quickly like a notebook? Take one page from that animation, and that would be equivalent to an anime cel.

In any event... I've been to a lot of cons... bought a lot of swag.... I'll try to narrow down as best as I can ^^;

Back at ACen 2003, I bought a concert poster for Malice Mizer... somewhat rare, cost me $80, and is current sitting in the home of some b*stard in Virginia. *shakes fist* Also that con, I bought an Eva Womens gashapon set, right before it went out of print, so that's another something that's worth a bit right now, though I wouldn't sell it >.>; I also bought a lot of small, cute Sailormoon stuff... which is important to me now, since cons I've been to since have very little Sailormoon merchandise ;.;

After that, I was pretty poor, so con merchandising waned a bit. This year, though.... yeah, that Rose of Versailles cel is cool ^_^ I do have a picture that we took of it, though, warning, it's large, and it's blurry:

http://xs200.xs.to/xs200/06192/cel4.JPG

I held myself off from buying a lot at Otakon, but I did get a Maison Ikkoku gashapon set that is just awesome; just waiting to find a kitty-proof place where I can set them all up.

Oh, and I have a killer bunny plush, too; though I got it from Spamalot, not from a convention >.>;

Milkymagic

I've never heard of Malice Mizer, but seeing pictures of them gives me an idea of what kind of group they were (shame to hear your poster isn't with you). Plenty of gashapon sets too, I'll bet the Eva one is cool, and Maison Ikkoku sounds like a nice choice. I also had no idea how rare Sailor Moon stuff is, but I guess that show's starting to get older, so perhaps it makes sense there. And I should mention that even though the pic was blurry, I could still make out the cel, and it was certainly a touching sequence to capture.

Keep up the stuff, as I'm very excited to see what else you guys have in store for me!

Sailormoon stuff is rather rare these days... both because interest had waned, and because there are liscencing issues because of legal battles. Most of the stuff you see these days is for the Live Action show.

It's probably sad that I know all this stuff..... D:

I wouldn't doubt it Mana, that show's been around so long, somebody's grubby hands will grasp around it, I'm just glad Gunbuster's getting a re-release finally!

XD Dragon Half is funny!

It isn't the greatest comedy ever (Project A-ko, Golden Boy, Digi Charat, and Azumanga Daioh are my top-tier), but I did like the spontaneous nature of it, along with some of the super-deformed moments. I'd say on a 10 scale, probably a 7, but that's a good grade if you ask me (I consider a 5 to be troublesome territory). Ok! On with the show!

That's ok, $60 for 3 sets still rings in at a sweet deal, and the Chi figure sounds like a cool purchase (I forgot to mention I did have a Chobits shirt that had Chi on it, and it said,"I Want a Persocom"). Pokemon will probably be something I'll tell newer fans about, and I've seen worse than Pokemon, trust me. Of course, that's just me.

And the painting was "Princess Mononoke" right? I think that's cool, Ghibli always had some great design, so that would be some good art to have.

Milkymagic

Gothic Lolita Asuka's the bomb! OMG! Also, Summer Wear Asuka and Rei are also quite nice! Chibi-Rei seems essential, and you gotta have EVA Unit figures in there too of course! You people are not pervs, you're people that should be my freaking friends, you guys are the "Figure Collectors Supreme!" Of course, Mana's Blowjob Asuka remains today's shocker, thank you EVA! lol!

Sounds like Sae has the anime goods, I'm hitting 400 DVDs, and 250 VHS (but this is coming from an absolute loser who's purchased more anime than manga in his history, though I'm absolutely addicted to the Hyper Police manga at the moment: at number 7 people!). I also have a few posters, the mentioned Gunbuster Storyboard set, Angel's Egg artbook, and a few other goodies here and there. But Sae whupped me in the manga category (only 30 for me, and that's total books: Battle Angel - my personal fav, Digi Charat, Negima, Urusei Yatsura, Hyper Police, etc.). Oh, and she whupped me in Sailor Moon Wands too. I totally suck.

Also, I have some of those posters too Ash (but you also have some cool ones I don't!), take it you read Newtype as well? I like that magazine, but they don't sell it around here anymore, which means it's time to subscribe to a magazine soon. Also, I need some wallscrolls (used to have two of them in high school: Galaxy Fraulein Yuna and Battle Angel, which I left back in my home in Wisconsin). Otherwise, my walls need some love sometime, but for now I'll oogle at the few posters I have.

And now, I think Dragon Half might be due for another viewing sometime soon, courtesy of Ash (it's been a while for myself when I think about it).

While I'm fairly certain that Gainax had made an actual blow job Asuka figure (I've seen some of their sexier figurines), mine actually isn't all that racy. It's a gashapon model or Asuka kneeling down on the floor, with her hands folded in prayer. However, because of how the capsule bent her during transport, her hands are more open than prayer like and, well, it doesn't hurt that the skirt is removable either, leaving her in a shirt and panties...

Milkymagic

lol! So it was "customized!" Brilliant!

Man, it wouldn't surprise me if Gainax did make a Blowjob Asuka, but there's tons of figures for Asuka and Rei. I wouldn't mind getting figures, but at the moment I have other interests, like donating a kidney for a cel: vintage '80s. But EVA's a great to start for figures, that's for sure.

Yeah, my posters are all either pages of NewTypeUSA ripped out and taped back together to be posters, actual posters from the magazines, collages made from pictures from NewType[or Anime Insider] that were too small to be put up as a poster, or actual posters that I got for free at FanimeCon. I have a few scrolls, but they're at a friend's house...and I don't think she'll ever return them. xD

1. A Texhnolyze promotional poster/catalogue-thing signed by the entire English cast.

2. A Haibane Renmei Artbook.

3. Catbus plushie. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/Twotwenty/sax.gif

2. A Haibane Renmei Artbook.

I knew you were gonna mention that... I so wanted that...

Manifest went by this year without me having bought a single thing from the traders... just didn't have enough time. Also, it just seems like it's the same merchandise, however I was sorely disappointed when later I found that there were apparently Suzumiya and Ouran merchandise being sold :whine:

So far the best thing I guess I have is one of those Haro balls... I hate the damn things from the series, but I couldn't help but buy one when I saw it.

Newtype is the bomb, I love that magazine, well said Ash.

I just bought Saber Marionette J to X from my last con (Animefest 2006), and I've seen J, and J again: The first was entertaining, the second sucked. Hopefully this last series will be good. For the record, however, I am quite insane. In fact, I go off in terrifying tangents sometimes (about what I've seen or owned), watch out! lol!

Sounds like Two-Twenty got some authentic goods, anything autographed is worth it, and the Haibane Renmei artbook sounds nice (like ABE's artwork). And there's nothing wrong with a haro ball, since it's always good to come back with something from a con.

Man, you got kicked out? That sucks, at least you got something. What happened? Just curious.

I actually didn't remember what Catbus was when that was mentioned, cool to know it was that thing from My Neighbor Totoro, that is pretty cool.

Do tell, what did you do to be kicked out?

Well, why didn't you just say that to begin with?

The way you worded it made it sound like you were thrown out of the con for disorderly conduct or something.

lol, that's true! I thought maybe security freaked out or something, I've witnessed stressed security over public displays of martial arts and what have you. Also, I've seen exclamations from outsiders that look at all the cosplaying cleavage and dub the convention sector "The Dungeon!"

Hotel Guest: "Don't go down there!"

Milky: "Why?"

Hotel Guest: "It's the dungeon down there, you'll never come back the same."

Milky: "You should've told me this years ago, sir."

But EVA's a great to start for figures, that's for sure.

Don't mind me for bringing this back up, I just didn't see it before...

I actually don't think Eva figures are all that great, and, personally, I don't think they're a good choice for figure collectors, whether new or old. They just all... look the same. Most Eva figures are just a horrdily out-of-character doll of Rei or Asuka (sometimes Misato, rarely others) with fancy clothes, skimpy clothes, holiday clothes, or no clothes, (and only every once and a while a uniform or plug suit), either alone or with another female emanating strong yuri vibes. Sure, not all of them are that way... most are, and I've easily seen over a hundred (probably) different types of Eva figures throughout my con career, as well as at various shops both around here and up in Milwaukee. Grab a few different types and you have them all.

On the other hand, I've seen some really damn cool figures. There are these Junko Mizuno dolls that are out of this world. At ACen one year I saw these fan-made Sailor Saturn and Motoko Kusanagi figures that were cooler than anything I'd ever seen mass-produced. And, of course, nothing can quite beat the sheer awesomeness and diversity (not to mention cheapness) of gashapon figures, which is what I collect. Even my gashapon Eva set (called the Girls of Evangelion) falls into the same traps mentioned above.

Oh well... it's not like you can blame Gainax for needing money :D

Milkymagic
09-28-2006, 08:54 AM
I think we should give Gainax money so they don't have to run the risk of ruining established franchises like Evangelion, and I heard Gunbuster 2 wasn't any good either. I suppose there are better figures (I'm not seasoned in figure collecting), EVA had some interesting ones, but I could understand some better variants being made here and there. The Capcom ones are fun too, but even there's tons of those, along with Dead or Alive when I say that (in which it's amazing how much fanservice goes into those things!).

Cool to see Mizuno has some figures, and I've definitely met my share of Sailor Moon fans here, which is cool.

Speaking of which, there was this dude at Animefest I saw in a school uniform, and I'm talking the female uniform...lol!

But that's still nothing compared to Man-Faye (legendary for obvious reasons).

Hey, when your biggest customers are geeky guys with no lives and too much money, fanservice pays the bills. Even I have my share of sexy figurines, but that's no excuse for the lack of creativity.

Milkymagic
09-28-2006, 09:25 AM
Well, you sure backed that into a corner, but you're right. It isn't much more creative than some lame, randomly scribbled artwork for a magazine on such short notice, or even some fan art. If quality figures are to be made, they must be made with some dimension. And I'm talking multiple angles, that aren't necessarily fanservice. I used to have lots of money, but now I'm a little setback for a while, meaning I just get to be a geek (Plain Geek, not Uber Geek).

Wow. How'd you manage that?

When I was a freshman, I had to do a report on a business I might like to go into for my introduction to business/business law class. As a part of the report, we were supposed to write to them. I sent them an email explaining my project, a few questions I wanted them to answer, and asking if they had any old articles they had been in. They happily answered my email and asked for my address, so a "care package" could be sent to me with all the info I needed. I gave my thanks and my address to them.

About a week later a large package came. I looked at it surprise and thought it was odd how much information they gave me. When I opened up the package, I saw that they had not only sent me copies of a few old articles on them, but a T-shirt, a keychain, the first DVD of You're Under Arrest!, Vampire Princess Miyu, and some other series that my ex-boyfriend stole from me. Upon recieving it, I sent them an email conveying my gratitude and they said it was no problem, they were glad to see an active anime fan. xD<3.

Edit: And I ended up with an A+ on the report.

Ash, that is so cool! Getting the hookups with Animeigo, somebody's got skill! Looks like you have a headstart, catch their next summer sale and it will cost you less than what I paid to own all their stuff (barring KOR, which is no longer available from them, R.I.P.). I wanna be your friend Ash!

And this is coming from somebody who's been shelling them his dough (lol, Mana knows how broke I am, $1,000 broke, thank you!), and in the process realized he was probably one of the main reasons they released Yawara. Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating, but to have all their anime products, they sure dug me in deep, but that's coming from a happy camper like myself!

Well, everything except "Super Deformed Double Feature" if you count that.

The first volume (the OVAs) of You're Under Arrest is one of my favorites, I thought it was well done, but I have yet to watch Miyu. What T-shirt and Keychain did they give you by the way? I always smack myself for not getting the Bean Bandit pin and Bubblegum Crisis poster when they had those...

You're right Mana, you do have the right to look for it, since pretty much all figures (female) have some form of fanservice in them. Still, I know there will come a day where I can buy such things again...

Milkymagic

Conventions are a double-edged sword, I was at Animefest 2006, and regardless of what I'm going to say it was fun overall.

If you don't like Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, or Trigun: expect not to find much conversation. I felt pretty alienated, but a lot of other folks didn't feel comfortable opening up either, so I guess it didn't completely matter if we liked the same hobby. Because in the end, it comes down to the facets one enjoys of a medium, and I have my own tastes sadly enough. And no, that doesn't mean I don't like the shows/games mentioned above, I'm just not a particular fanatic of them. I also haven't seen FMA or Trigun for the record.

In fact, the only people I spoke to was one individual who liked Evangelion (yet there was no Eva cosplay to be seen, who knew?), a dude who cosplayed as Jet Black (we were talking about anime production and his con stories), saw a girl who cosplayed as Sakura from Hyper Police (that was cool, one of my all time favs), as well as a few folks who cosplayed Urusei Yatsura (Lum, Ataru, Ran).

Other than that, I was annoyed by the Square/Enix crowds and wanted to find a place for my indifferent nature (I have nothing against Square, there just happened to be a near monopoly of them), in which the best friends I made there were the artists and dealers.

It's always cool hearing how someone came about wanting to draw manga, and realize what they truly wanted out of it, which was fun. I gabbed with the Media Blasters folks and raved about how much I loved Pistol Opera, Kite, and Berserk. We also talked about Takashi Miike, good times. Then there was Anime Asylum, a place with anime goods straight from Japan (where I got my Gunbuster Storyboards, Angel's Egg Artbook, and Posters), and I surprised them with my enthusiasm for 80s anime.

Panels were alright but almost non-existent even if Yoshitoshi Abe (Lain, Haibane Renmei) was the guest of honor, Flow was musical guest, and there were plenty of voice actors (Doug Smith was cool). The rest was not my cup of tea, and just to note: dancing is so stupid (I'm sorry). That's just my take, conventions aren't essential (from my experience), but I'll go to another just to make sure I didn't miss something that could change my mind (I plan on going to a larger one, just to make sure). For the most part it was fun, but it left me skeptical, as far as to why I would need to go to one.

Mana

@Milky: I've noticed a lot of the same at the past few conventions I've gone to. Nowadays I steer clear from talking to new people at them, not because I'm anti-social or I want to seem like an elitist prick, but because I don't have interest in Naruto/FMA/Bleach/Final Fantasy, which automatically stops conversations with about 90% of the people you see there. It also sucks in terms of merchandising, which is why I didn't spend as much at my cons of this year (with the exception of the RoV cel).

This isn't to say that I didn't meet some cool people: the guy who sold Roark and I the RoV cell, some of the people waiting in line at the Old School Anime panel at Tak Tak, and of course the AA crowd that I was able to meet up with this year. As sad at it sounds, the older someone was, the better they were to talk to, and I spent very little time talking with people younger than me, with the exception of, again, some of the AA crowd.

It's no one's fault but my own, I suppose, since I have a harder time getting into newer shows, especially the ones that tend to get popular in America, ie, the Shounen Jump stuff, and a lot of CN aired stuff.

But now I'm rambling, so I'll quit. I get to hit up another new convention next year that I've never been to before, so maybe things will change then. Or maybe I just need to suck it up and watch more newer anime.

Milkymagic
09-29-2006, 12:14 PM
It's cool Mana, you speak my language (I gotta get me a cel next convention, cool to see you had a great collector's experience), I wish I knew what to say to folks my age who like newer stuff. Sure helps I don't watch cable.

I do try to watch newer stuff, don't get me wrong, but I definitely hold an affinity for older Vintage (80s stuff). Regardless of limited conversation, it's definitely the older folks who pique my interest more (though I talked to a couple my age bracket), no doubt about it. I'll probably never get to meet AA folks at a con, but that's why I stop on the boards, y'know?

I sensed some people holding in some anxiety (I broke the ice for a few), but it felt like there were a few different individuals for me outside the mentioned crowds. Hopefully you guys have a con experience that's one for the ages soon enough.

There aren't really too many AAers around the Chicago area, I've never seen one besides Roark and myself, but, eh, it's something. Otakon is another matter though, a lot of AA folks show up there, as well as Expo.

I have only been to a couple of small minicons. I did realise that since Naruto started showing on TV that there would be plenty of naruto fans...I really wish it never came on Cartoon Network. The fans were more amusing than annoying to me, maybe it was because it was a small Con. I mostly talked to the artist anyways and someone made me a Hikaru No Go keychain (he had never heard of it,too!)

maybe its kind of a fad right now, I don't know. Maybe it will all blow over some day and leave all the "serious" people behind so they can enjoy their anime and manga in peace.Naruto would have to be over on CN for that to happen. One very long wait.
I recently saw a commercial for some Naruto toys and felt a bit embarrassed...

Has anyone gotten anime convention gifts for others? I spent some time looking for something for my brother at the last mini-con. I knew he liked Berzerk, but I didn't know what other anime he liked. I asked around and found someone with Berzerk plushies. I didn't think my brother would enjoy one so I never even looked. I could have gotten one for him as a joke though. In the end I found a Berzerk poster for $2. Now I just have to think about what to get him next time.
