ADV: Anime Essentials
CPM: Anime 101
Geneon: Signature Series
Bandai: Anime Legends

You know, those re-releases of anime that go for 10-20 bucks cheaper than the originals. I'm not a collector, so I won't pay extra cash for the original release. However, I care about content. Anyone know if either of the above companies reduce or increase content on their re-released sets? As long as it's only the boxart that's different, I'm willing to save some bucks.

The thinpaks are usually one of the best choices. They do not take any content out, other than having just one cover instead of many. Neither do they in their signature series. The only thing they are doing is trying to squeeze the last few dollars out of a license that may still be available for a couple more years.

Those KOR fans who waited until Animeigo was about to lose their license won big time because they were able to buy the series at a little over 5.00 a disc... which was quite a departure from the initial $200.00 for the entire collection if you bought it all at once.

They do sometimes take extras (maybe commentaries, bios, etc.) out of the thinpaks or value lines. I recall David Williams of ADV mentioning this at Otakon 2006.

Thanks! Here's another question:

Evangelion: Perfect Collection or Platnium Collection? I understand Perfect is 8 discs, Platnium is 6. I'm already interested in Platnium since I don't have to get up to change discs as often. And comparing the two on Amazon, I'm seeing that only the Platnium Collection has Dolby? I don't even know what that means, to be honest. I'm guessing improved sound quality.. or surround sound, or I dunno. Enlighten me! What other differences are there?

EDIT: Just read AnimeOnDVD's reviews. I guess it really is remastered in both audio and video. And it's got all that Director's Cut stuff

The one thing I have against 'Greatest Hits' reissued dvds are the atrocious banner signifying that status, which can disfigure otherwise pleasant art covers (i.e. Geneon's red "Signature Series" banner on Trigun DVDs). Aside from that, I have little else to say on the matter, except that the price slash can be nice. :)

I do agree it kills the cover art, but I'm not really a collector. I just want the anime. Of course, of the Collector's/Special Edition is missing content, then I'm going for the original.

Hey... as long as they don't put the big banner in the middle of the episode with a disclaimer saying "because you are a sorry excuse for a cheap bastard, we only offer half the episodes" I'm fine with that.

unless your a collector (such as myself) why not grab the cheeper set...even if it has the ugly banner right across the front of the nice artwork...hey if you can save some money and put up with that ugly blemish you can buy another one while your at it... =) it all depends what you want from your purchase

I've been waiting for years for the price of Lain to go down so I could own a legitimate release. Looks like Geneon's Signature Series is the only way I'll ever be able to afford it, I'm definitely going to buy it sometime.

Yeah i got the Geneon's Signature series of Lain when they got re released back in 2004. Now the series (the geneon signature dvs) are in a boxset for only 40 dollers. Its worth the price.
