I've been on a horror binge lately, anything from scary movies to funny movies parodying scary movies. Can't get enough for some reason, but I also want to see the animation spectrum of this genre. Can anyone help me?

Javer: That would work....xept I saw that one.

Perfect Blue?

I like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. If you try it out, try not to get scared away by the shoddy artwork and crappy first episode. I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for, though.

Blood +

The anime doesn't scare you overtly like most horror shows. It doesn't put you into the "fight or flight" mode with excessive gore or anything, but it disturbs you in a deeper sense. The horror is more psychological (although not quite as neurotic as Perfect Blue); however, it takes a while for it to actually appear.

I must warn you that the show is more of a drama than a horror fest.

Well, Hellsing is an obvious one, but still good. For wierd confused sort of horror, Perhaps Boogiepop Phantom. Or go for the classic, and watch Vampire Hunter D

Elfen Lied
This one's over the top as far as blood and gore are concerned. It's also up there in the "Gruesome List" and honestly, even I find it too painful to watch the whole series sometimes, but I'll still give it to them with the pints of blood successfully spilled throughout.

Ninja Scroll
It has one of the most violent and gut-wrenching fights/scenes ever. Watch it and you'll know what I mean... period.

Blue Gender: Movie
Very bloody and pulling no stops when compared to the serial counterpart. Quite a letdown, but still worth a peek at one way or another.

Le Portrait de Petite Cossette.
Romantic horror drama with gorgeous animation. Very psychotic and beautiful.

Pet Shop of Horrors.
Four horror stories about a mysterious petshop.

Vampire Princess Miyu OVA.
Get the OVA. Stay away from the TV series.

Requiem from the Darkness.
I've only seen the first few episodes, but everything seems interesting.

Horror... hmm.

For some odd reason most of the supposedly "horror" genre anime I've seen have been pretty heavy on the ecchi, if not being out and out hentai. That tends to turn me off from them and makes it hard to come up with recommendations (I'd end up recommending against things like Elfen Lied, for example).

The original 4-episode Vampire Princess Miyu OVAs are quite creepy and horror-ific, have no ecchi, and are very cool. I never finished the later TV series, but haven't heard very good things about it. The OVA series feels incomplete, but in either event is very short, its biggest flaw.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a good action/horror movie with excellent production quality.

Master of Mosquiton is a horror/comedy/action franchise which is a bit interesting and different, but might not be for everyone. It's more towards the "Scary Movie" end of the horror spectrum.

Iria: Zeriam the Animation is more of a sci-fi action series, but it's excellent stylistically and has wonderfully choreographed combat. It evokes some of the horror-esque feelings of the first Alien movie, where there is "something" out there that's killing people off...

And that's it for what I can remember that's at least tangentially horror-related and also worthy of mention.

The only one that comes to mind would be Requiem from the Darkness. Creepy would probably be the best word to describe the show.

Animes are not really scary :/
But if you're looking for just good 'horror' animes, Cossette is my favourite. Its dream like journey into horror, obsession and two conflicting ideas of beauty, its all very poetic.
I didn't like Pet shop of horrors that much but since everybody loves it I'll recommend it. Count D is gay and the detective is a tool.
Horror in vampire princess miyu is very elegant, I liked it, but again not very scary...
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust has pretty awesome actions, and the creatures of that world are pretty interesting.

KakuRenBo: Hide & Seek.
I'm not sure how much of a horror anime this may be because like Complex said, anime isn't ever really scary. But this is an interesting and, perhaps to some, disturbing anime that depicts a children's ghost story. If anything, the animation is really cool and it's not very long.

And an old one I remember from childhood is They were Eleven. I have no idea how the animation has held up over the years, or even if someone older than 9 or 10 years old will find it "scary," but it's worth a shot. It's sci-fi; this crew of 10 on a spacecraft discover there is 11 of them and they have to figure out who the imposter is. Aside from remembering liking it, that's all I can remember of the story. :}

Some elements from Berserk might be deemed as horror, methinks.

I just started watching Jigohu Shoujo and I think it has some elements of the horror genre so far. I have only seen two episodes but they are very creepy and it has to do with Hell so there ya go.

Yami No Matsuei is one title I forgot to mention. It may be a little debatable to say if it really is horror, but it does contain sinister intentions and supernatural elements, particularly on one arc whether it does look like a suspense thriller.

One of the best visuals I've ever seen, plus a noteworthy opening theme (in contrary to its horrendous ending theme) that remains one of my all-classics. If you can look through the bishounen-ai aspect of it, this may be worthy of your time.

Not the wet-your-pants type, but these work for me:

Petshop of Horrors (the story about the mermaid, IMO, is the best one)
Hell Teacher Nube (the ghost in the toilet was really creepy)
Ghosts at School (the nurse ghost haunts me to this day)

While it might not do anything for someone looking for a conventional hack and slash scare, I can very safely say that Boogiepop Phantom has the most consistently creepy tone of any show I've seen in the last few years. It'll never give you a sudden jolt or make you shrink into your seat, but a few of the stories are just flat out skin crawling.

Mermaid's Forest TV was pretty good. It's been awhile since I've seen it, so I can't affirmatively say it was creepy as hell, but I love Rumiko and the story-telling throughout.

My favorite that I guess I would consider horror would be Requiem from the Darkness, one of the most underrated and under appreciated shows out there.

The Devilman OVAs, despite it's age its still one of the best horror/action series around. And the Devil Lady, it doesnt have as much horror action as the original Devilman since it's more of a horror/drama, but still a good series.

Narutaru for a nice shock factor. Violent, gore, sexual encounters. etc etc.

I guess that you could kind of add Gantz to this category. Sometimes, it's creepy when some characters are put into a battle of life and death with no weapons (or when they refuse to use weapons or the suit), while other characters are prepared. The grim reality of the anime, is that aside from the suit and guns, these people have no super traits to help them survive. It's kind of like a survival horror show, where the characters are entered into a twisted game.

Perfect Blue was also pretty creepy. That stalker freaked me out a bit.

And Grave of the Fireflies can show the horrors of war (or bombings to be exact), and the grim reality of surviving after everything is taken from you. Not exactly a horror anime, but a bit unsettling.

Vampire Hunter D is always a good choice, Bloodlust is probably easier to recommend on top on that.

3x3 Eyes had some great action, and it has a story involving immortals, it was pretty exciting stuff.

I was also a fan of Doomed Megalopolis, it had some supernatural elements that were interestingly played out, but it's got heavy cultural references...

Boogiepop Phantom is also indeed consistently scary, it's actually quite brooding, and probably my personal pick for "scariest horror anime I've viewed"

Now if you don't mind ecchi, I thought Wicked City was creepy, and the darker scenery added a nice mood. Plus, we have shapechanging monstrosities!

Finally, Perfect Blue is quite a psychological scare, if you're looking for a mental buzz (don't forget my Boogiepop nod too while you're at it!)

That's just my take, hopefully you find something that's worth your time.

I will most definately second:

Blue Gender: This is very well rounded in themes, especially if you don't mind lower budget animation productions this is a must see. Series only, stay away from the movie.

Elfen Lied: This is newer and has the advantage of being higher budget. This is a perfect series if you especially like the gore aspect of horror.

3x3 Eyes: Though I haven't seen it, this comes highly recommended and will be my next purchase of this genre.

Some ones I would add:

Perfect Blue; Let's just say f you are a fan of horror in anime and have not seen this title, you are not a fan of horror in anime. Got it?

Monster: This is getting very high reviews by many people and I will also give it my thumbs up.

I would like to add that the following suggestions, while most very good, are not true horror anime titles and, if you are really jones-ing for a good horror, these may leave you wanting:

Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D, Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll (WTF?)
