Tell us what's your favorite Final Fantasy and why.
I liked Final Fantasy VIII best. First, Squall was my all time favorite lead. Second, I felt that FFVIII's story was the best with some of the best bad guys. Thirdly, I liked the Squall-Rinoa romance better than the Aeris-Cloud-Tifa love triangle.
Also, FFVIII was the FF I played in which the female lead doesn't whack enemies with a rod.

FFVIII used to be my favorite, when I played it at 12 years old. I just recently began playing it again, and my, how the game sucks. It's only saving grace was the ingenious but flawed junction system; pretty much everything else went down the tubes. Squall is a dumbass, all-too-angsty lead, Rinoa's one of the most mindless female leads I've seen, the other characters are bland and one-dimensional, and the story was so full of intense, cheesy melodrama that I felt like I was watching a Korean drama. Oh, and Squall shows another example of the "dramatic stupidity" (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23079) I mentioned before in an earlier thread.
So it's probably FFVII for me. Sorry hardcore veterans, but FFVI put me to sleep. And it wasn't because of the 16-bit graphics layout.

I gotta go with FFIII. :\
Or maybe X. That blitzball system was, as the children are saying these days, "hella sweet". Did I use that right?

As is with most, I found FFVII to be one of the best overall, but thats not to say I haven't enjoyed others as much. FFIX I found to be a very good game with great characters, design, and overall gameplay. It was a nice change back to the original FF style and setting while still retaining some of the modern-day FF innovations like ATB and Limit Breaks (although under the guise of "Trance").

Final Fantasy Tactics is not only my favorite FF game, but my favorite game of all time. It's pretty underrated, and tends to get overshadowed by the more traditional FF games. I'm a big fan of strategy-RPGs in general, and FFT is the best I've played.
The difficulty was challenging enough without being cheap, and actually incorporated strategizing which is lost in most games today. Gameplay was fairly deep with all the different classes and all the different possible skills and weapons they could use. I absolutely loved the epic plot, as well.
Runner-up: Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X simply because it's the first FF game i ever played. I eventually played some of the other FF such as XII, XIII, IV and VI(still havent finished it), but i didnt enjoyed them as much as X. Maybe because i never got the chance to play the previous games in their time and was more used to playing more modern games.

Final Fantasy IX, very closely followed by Final Fantasy X.
IX for the characters and gameplay.
X for the characters and plot.

My personal favorite is Final Fantasy VI (also know as Final Fantasy III when it was first released in the U.S.). It had a great story, many fleshed out characters, none of which were actually the main character, and a simple yet well done battle and leveling system.
I think that Final Fantasy XII is going to be my second favorite once it is released, perhaps exceeding Final Fantasy Tactics in my own mind, if only by a little.

I'm gonna be straight with you.
I haven't liked any Final Fantasy yet.
VIII was lame.
X was ok for awhile. But I never liked Tidus.
X-2 was lame. (but omg boobs =O)
Crystal Chronicles was a pain in the ass.
Tactics didn't do it for me.
Tactics Advance...lol
I'd probably like the classic ones for the NES and SNES or what have you...but...ah I don't have any nor have I played them.
I prefer Nippon Ichi's S/TRPGS over FF tactics and I prefer various other RPGs to the FF series (ie Tales of, Star Ocean, Vallyrie Profile)
I have a friend who's deadset on making me play VII...just because I laugh at the fact Aeris died...
I'd use it as a coaster if he lent it to me.
But if it means anything I liked Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories alright and playing as Cloud in Ehrgeiz...

I'm going to go with FF: X; I'm even replaying it right now (which is the reason I ventured into the Arcade). The story is pretty good, it is truly beautiful and Blitz ball owns my soul.
Not to mention I could use Lulu's magic until my X button wore off, if you know what I mean ~_^;;
Edit/
I'm with Saya. FFVII has never appealed to me. I have a cousin who wastes no moment to try on force it into my PS2. I'm also shallow in the fact that I dislike games that don't look good (with the exception of some of the early Armored Core games), and I've never seen a good in-game picture of FFVII.

While people may complain that it's overrated, FF7 gets my vote. It was simply fun, fast paced, I loved the materia system (my favourite magic system of the bunch), had interesting characters and an interesting plot. My only complaint was the ending, but FF7: Advent Children brought things to a good end.
FF9 is my runner up. I like the step back in time that they took (FF7, FF8, 10 and 10-2 are all futuristic). I also thought that the characters were some of (or possibly were) my favourite characters in the FF franchise (excluding Quina. I hate that stupid blue thing). The gameplay was also interesting how they incorporated the jobs, so you had to think about who you wanted in your party. You couldnt just throw in any combination at any time. Oh, and Zidane in trance mode? Kickass.

FFX-2 is the best FF ever.
CHANGING COSTUMES IN COMBAT! BEST IDEA EVER!
Flashy dresspheres and skimpy battle outfits make a battle system not. But hey, warrior or dark knight, whatever floats your beat eh?
I'm not stranger to FF, neither are those who played it.
What really connects to be closely is IV. Story elements of betrayal, dark turned light, multi-tiered baddies (King of Baron to Golbez to Zemus+Zeromus) and a love that stretches even at dire times.
V ain't no slouch either. For an RPG, it's pretty deep in both music and battle system. Spending hours gaining skills for each job couldn't be a better treat.
But FF isn't FF without mentioning VI. 4 words: Aria de Mezzo Caraterre. No other song out there stands up to this italian sung melody. And the story is one of the strongest stories I've seen in any video game. And might I add is a mighty fine rare game at that? Those 3 are by far my most fave. 7 had it's challenge and fictional relationship run, 8 was exciting, and 9 was old school. But they are all favorites.

I love you people!
*hugs everyone who mentioned FFIX*
A lot of people dislike FFIX because of its cartoony nature and not-nearly-as-heavy-as-FFVII storyline. But it's my favorite because of its loveable characters, enjoyable storyline, simple and clean battle system, and humorous devices. The soundtrack is great, and there's a lot to do in the game. FFVII was also great (the effort that went into making that game must have been tremendous at the time), but it can get a little too emo for me at times.
FFVIII, in my opinion, definitely had the best soundtrack. I can't stop listening to the Fithos Lusec album. It was nice how everything had that full orchestration sound to it, and it wasn't played off as being "just BGM."
Anyway, if I had to give them a ranking, from 1 to 10...
1) FFIX, 2) FFVII, 3) FFVIII, 4) FFVI, 5) FFIV, 6) FFV, 7) FFX, 8) FFII, 9) FFI, 10) FFIII.
If I were including Tactics, it would probably be third or fourth on the list. Great game, And Tactics Advance would be, well, last... Regarding FFX-2, I haven't played enough of it to give it a genuine ranking. It was fun if you didn't expect anything from it. But it's definitely not a "real" FF, of FF quality.
And sorry for the generational grouping of platforms; I don't need graphics that're too flashy, but it's nice if the graphics is at least convincing. With a 3D environment, much more information can be conveyed to the eye with each scene. Sorry, FFVI fanatics...
But we all know which is the best FF of all time. 8-Bit Theater! It's the only reason I played FFI, but it was worth it in the end.

Final Fantasy. I don't really know about you guys, but I don't have an all time favorite Final Fantasy game. Each game appeals to me in its own way, and depends on my mood at the time that I play them. The only game I really disliked is Final Fantasy Legends 1. This game pissed me off, it's only real character was yours, and you had to "buy" you other character,a nd if you fed them a kind of meat, they changed their species.
Final Fantasy VIII was a wonderful game with a story that was dramatic. Which is probably why some don't like it. Introvert with a tragic past finds beautiful woman, saves the world, and never truly comes out of his shell. That happens today, just without the save the world part.
FF IX was wonderful. I love the game, it was the third FF game I ever played, and it was hilarious, and I loved using Quina just so I could use the other characters to kill her/him/it. I don't know about you, but having a character there to take out anger on is wonderful.
FF VII was a great game, with, probably, the best story-line of any of the games, at least as far as a game can go with story-line. True you have to save the world, and you have to kill the big bad guy, but the theme of losing your past self to find your real self is a theme that a lot of people can relate to.
FF X is a fun game, with a little too much drama in the story. BUT! The battle system is fun, and the leveling up system is one I really like, being able to "see" your characters level up. FF X-2 is also fun, but that's all it really is. It's the only true sequel, and it fails that in my mind. The game is more like a giant side-quest that is just there for fun.
I haven't played the other games enough to have a decent opinion of them. I have to borrow them from friends any time I want to play them, and I don't really play games religiously, so it takes a long time for me to beat any games. I love FF Tactics and Tactics Advanced, simply because I like the strategy part of the games, and the job system is fun, as you can customize your character as you like.
The only real beef I have with the games, are the look of the characters. They are getting more and more metro-sexual, and it annoys me slightly lol.
P.S.: I did not know that they had already made Final Fantasy XIII . . .

Tactics: I can play it over... and over... and over again even after beating the bad guys.
FFI: It was on the GBA! FFII seemed like crap to me, but Dawn of Souls was worth my time just coz of FFI... ah, old-school, monster-bashing... how I love it.
??? FFVIII ???? I have to comment that if Squall was a real guy, I'd kick him in the balls for that ****ing attitude of his. But Rinoa was kinda cool (just coz she wasn't a magician like all other girls).
EDIT:

I have to agree with Saya.
I played FF7 a ton but looking back, I don't know if I was even having fun. It was more a case of game-lock and grinding, like Pokemon. Knights of the Round is boring by the 2nd use and removes all challenge from the game, just like any bred Chocobo takes all the fun out of racing. Thanks to the materia system by the end of the game every character is the exact same, and every fight is just X, X, X, X, X. I think I had the most fun trying to break personal records for quickest win in the Sub Hunting arcade game, which is sad and Seymour Skinner-esque.
At least Lunar and Skies of Arcadia leveled with me so the game retained some challenge and required a modicum of strategy, while the Tales series livens up combat. FF Tactics is better if you count it as a RPG, but sub-par if you count it as a strategy game.
I'm sure some will point to the grand epic plots of the FF series, but I buy games to play them, not to watch or read them.

Lack-luster characters in FFIX??? It had some of the most colorfull characters in the entire franchise since the "classics". Zidane, total pimp with a wannabe hero personality; Vivi, little black mage that totally owns and is concerned about when he will "stop"; Quina, a fat, lazy thing that wants to eat everything; Steiner, the dopey knight in shining armor and the comic relief of the game; and Garnet, the princess deciding which is more important, her kingdom or her feelings? I thought FFIX had a great cast.
Also, FFT was a great game with a fairly good story and in depth strategy. The characters were also quite well done though some were bland at times. Only big thing that is wrong with this game (and tends to confuse some) is the rushed translation which botched some of the words and sentences and made some things said have no meaning.

The strategy part of FFT, ie the combat system, is fairly in-depth for a Japanese RPG's combat system. But in terms of pure strategy it's shallow, the same way that a strategy game might have shallow RPG elements.
Given the word "Tactics" in the title, I was expecting more strategy.

FF stands for Final Fantasy. Pure strategy games usually take too much brainpower that there's nothing left for 'fantasazing'. Also, as I've said, FF Tactics is still an RPG and must retain the simplicity and straightforwardness of an RPG while having strategic elements. If Square wanted to make a strategic game, they'd have scratched the "FF" and just put in Tactics. FF Tactics was probably made for FF fans who wanted to use a little more brainpower than other FF games required. Honestly, when I first heard it was a strategic RPG, I didn't want to play FF Tactics because I don't really like strategy games. But I tried it anyway just coz it was FF, and I found that it wasn't far from other FF games, you just have to think a wee bit more; thus I loved it.

FFT is supposed to be a blend of the "simplistic" FF style of RPGs and strategy, thus making it a tactical RPG. Sure the "tactics" part wasn't all complicated like pure strategy games, but it's not supposed to be given that it was made by Square with the FF label. So as a blend I feel they did a great job.

I always thought the Fantasy part of FF was in reference to the sword n' scorcery elements in the game - a hallmark of Fantasy literature. It's also possible to make a deep strategy game using fantasy elements, such as Fantasy General, Kohan or Disciples.
Maybe it was too much to expect for FF to make the leap to strategy, but other franchises have, such as Dynasty Warriors -> Dynasty Tactics.

Correction: If they didn't put "Final Fantasy" in the title, none of the Final Fantasy fans/fanboys would have bought it, thus drastically decreasing profits. You said it yourself, you only tried it because it had "Final Fantasy" in the name.
Fire Emblem is another good strategy game that also manages to have a decent amount of fantasy in it.

Like I said, it was probably aimed at FF fans who wanted to use more brainpower while playing FF. Also, I'd like to note that in FF Tactics Advance (I haven't played the other Tactics), it had FF in the title because the kids were transported to the FF world, and that was part of what made the game fun and interesting. Also, if you took time to read my post properly, I also stated that:

It would have different for other people. Maybe some people like strategy games, and despite disliking FF, they picked it up because it had "Tactics" on the title.

Maybe around here, there are only very few people who like that game. But, if you check out the overall gaming society, many will state they like FFVIII because:
1. Girl gamer: Squall is hawt.
2. Guy gamer: Rinoa is hawt.
Or 3. FFVIII was the first FF game to reach a broader population, thus making it the first FF game many have played.

The game was titled "Final Fantasy" since it was supposed to be Hironobu Sakaguchi's final game before retiring. Hence, it was his "Final Fantasy." Although he didn't end up retiring afterwards, the name stuck. (source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_fantasy))

I really like the game. It's just not my favorite. Unlike many people, I found the battle system to be very solid. The full-motion videos were nice, and the music was unparalleled. But, the phyical in-game motion was a little clunky, and the characters were drawn to be realistic yet pixelated, which really bothers me. And the storyline was slightly more negative than what I'm looking for. But these are all minor nitpicks. The game was great in my opinion.

Nope. I heard the original Tactics was really hard so I stayed miles away from it(I used to HATE strategy games. HATE HATE HATE!). So I was a bit surprised that Advance was pretty easy. I'm just stating that I like FF Tactics Adv more than the other FF games, but I'm not saying it's better than the original. I'll try and play the original when I find my friend who has a copy. I haven't played FF Tactics but I love FF Tactics Advance. I can't stand the judges though. I have a hard time remebering the laws and I try to stop myself in mid action, but it's usually too late. I couldn't get enough of that game though. I loved mixing the classes and getting new abilities. Strikeback and double sword are my favorites. They are even better when used together.
I liked Dawn of Souls too, all for FFI. I tried II but I didn't like it, but I will finish it some day. FFX was my first game and my first time for "FF hunger pains" it took me awhile to realize that the reason why my stomach was hurting was becasue I hadn't eaten in a while.

Marche>Cloud>Zidane>lint on the sofa>Squall>my cat's hairball>watching paint dry>bed-crumb faeries>Tidus
Much better. I couldn't stand Tidus either...

Final Fantasy III. And not the American one. Rather, the one that's eventually coming out for the DS. Screw you, game that was actually good, but got royally ripped apart by Square and put together into a new game with useless 3D *coughFFVIIcough*.
Really, I'm just saying that to be different. My favorite is actually FFII (Again, not the American one). It was the first Final Fantasy with actual characters with actual personality. Not to mention that the experience system (however broken it may have been) was the precursor to the entire SaGa series (which unfortunately went downhill around the time of SaGa Frontier). FFIII would probably be my 4th favorite, only ranking above IX because of the Onion Knights.

I may be a bit biased, as it was the first one I played, but I still have to say that Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite of the series. It's the game that got me into RPGs and even now, I enjoy pulling it out and playing through it once in a while. The characters are fleshed out, the world is deep and engaging, and the second half of the game is probably my favorite bit in any RPG. I mean, you get a ton of characters, then they're scattered around the world and you need to find some way to locate them all and recruit them once again. So well done. The characters were also unique, not just in personality, but in abilities too, since every one had one or two moves no on else (save Gogo) could do, which added more depth than games where everyone can learn everything (I'm looking at you, FF XII).
Other favorites would be VII, XII (partially through, but enjoying it), and X. Not as big of a fan of VIII as others, and I enjoyed IX, but it doesn't quite make it to the favorites list. IV was a lot of fun as well and another one of the RPGs I cut my teeth on, but it can't hold a candle to VI as far as old school Final Fantasy games go.

My favorite Final Fantasy would have to be Final Fantasy VII, I loved the story line and the mini quest that they put in it. Favorite part of the game was the Chocobo raising. All the other Final Fantasy's will always have a spot in my favorite game list.
{havent played 12 yet ^^''}

As of right now FF12 has won my heart over the others.
Reason: All the characters act their age, and the world of Ivalice is breath-taking because each setting stands out a lot as you go exploring. Love the real-time battle system as well. Very touche. And the ending song is sung by a very talented woman. I love her voice. :icon_danc

I haven't played that many, but Final Fantasy X takes the cake for me. I hear VII is good. The movie was. The original on gameboy was pretty good.

How would she compare to Faye Wong, the woman who sang "Eyes on Me" in FFVIII?

For me it would have to be FF VIII. It's always been my favourite and probably always will be. One of the main reasons is because of the opening song (Liberi Fatali). But I am srarting to fall in love with FF III for the DS because I can play it anytime (mainly during school).
