View Full Version : Gen Con
Okay I have NO clue what this convention is but I talked to a dude at Fry's Electronics and he said it's an anime convention and it's going on RIGHT NOW downtown in Indianapolis (downtown for me)!!! So I checked it out online and supposedly it is a Gaming convention but you can still cosplay. So I thought I might cosplay for the first time EVER (always wanted to). Does anyone know anything about the particular convention?

Don't shower before you go. You'll stick out too much if you've bathed.
Gen Con is definately a gaming convention, not anime. They focus on things like table top RPGs, card and board games, things of that nature. While anime does play a small role in the con (mostly because a good amount of gaming geeks are also anime geeks), it is indeed a small role. The same way you wouldn't go to an Anime Convention because you like video games, you don't go to Gen Con just because you like anime. If you do play a lot of games, and you think it's something you'd enjoy, then by all means, feel free to go, but if you're just going for anime, then you're going to be very disappointed.
As far as Cosplay goes, it may not be against the rules to cosplay, but, again, an anime-based cosplay won't have the same kind of reception at Gen Con as it would at an anime con. A majority of the cosplays found there will be game, TV show, movie, or fantasy based, though you may find some anime-cosplaying brethren. Especially for a first-time cosplayer, I think you'd find it easier and a lot more fun to do an anime cosplay at an anime convention, but that's just my opinion, coming from someone who started out cosplaying for Halloween, who constantly got stares and questions of "WTF are you supposed to be? o_O".
If you are thinking of going, then I would strongly suggest reading through the events posted, panels, workshops, tournaments and such, and see what interests you before commiting to a desicion.
"Stare at jaw-dropping costumes, or better yet, wear one of your own."
That's what it said on the site so I thought it would be cool to cosplay. I love playing video games so I hope I won't be TOO disapointed yet I AM gonna go as an anime character.

Gencon Isn't about video games. It's tabletop games.

what's a tabletop game? a computer game?

Table Top games are just that, games you play on a table top. These include card games (Magic/Pokemon/YuGiOh type), board games, and pen-and-paper role playing games, like Dungeons and Dragons.

A broader term for gencon would be a card players den. I would say it's a LARPers den since D&D plays a huge roll in that, but...

OY! Just because someone plays D&D does not make them a larper. Nor does that mean that D&D is the only game that has larpers. I've seen more larpers for Star Wars than for anything else. As of last night, it was okay to be anime characters at Gencon. I have a friend who is up there, and she dressed as Chobits, and she had friends who were dressed as Kakashi, Sakura, and Sesshomeru(<--- misspelled that, the brother of Inuyasha).
Just went and they told me it was till 8pm! Wrong! It was till 4pm! I was only there 20 minutes till it closed!!! But it still ruled! I got GITS and NANA playing cards (not trading cards), a real katana, and a parasol (can't spell)!!!!! It rocked and I am SO going next year!!!!!

There is one called Tokonatsu in Woburn, Milton Keynes, England. It has already passed but perhaps you can catch it next year. It was from the 28th to the 30th of July.
AmeCon is another one. It's held in Leicester, England. This one has already passed as well. The '06 convention was from the 11th to the 13th of August.
The dates for both of those conventions could change but now you have two conventions to look forward to. Unless you live far away from these places and don't want to travel very far.

I had the opportunity to get some VIP tickets from a radio station contest. My friend was actually able to get through the lines and on the air, and then he drove right into a deadzone and lost his call. Needless to say, there was a week of mourning our lost opportunity, followed by a ceremonial burial of our hopes for ridiculously expensive tickets. :D
man I wish I could have won tickets....I wasn't even able to go because I had to work all weekend and the other two days were on school days. V.V I was quite sad since I've been goin for the past two years.....I may be able to go to Tsubasa-con though! ^-^
