Last night, Roark surprised me by coming to pick me up from work and taking me out to dinner, and lo and behond, I come back with this shiny rock thing on my ring finger.
Yep, Roark and Mana are getting married.
We've known we were going to for some time now, but it's nice to have that final bit of proof. And trust me, I don't plan on taking this thing off more than I can avoid it :p
I dunno, I felt it was something worth celebrating >.>;

This thread instantly put a smile on my face. This is awesome, awesome, awesome and one hellva reason to celebrate! Congratulations!
How did he do it/time it? Did he get on one knee? Details, Mana, details!

As one of the few married people around this place, I can tell you this is going to be one of the most special events in your life. Thinking about it brings back some really happy flashbacks of my own life.
Good going guys. I just hope Roark drank enough Pepto Bismol before giving you the rock. I know I was extremely nervous because I thought I was going to screw the delivery up somehow. ;)

Congratulations Mana, congratulations Roark. It maybe not much, but my most sincere and honest blessings to you both. Haha, I was under an impression that it was already a marriage but why not make it official, indeed!
I suppose it is a rather amusing story....
On Sunday, we were taking the Train into the city to visit Grive, who's in town temporarily, and, specifically to tease me, Roark mentions that he has a surprise for me but that he won't give it to me until Tak Tak. And I say specifically to tease because he knows how much I hate surprises, especially ones I have to wait for, so I spent all of our public transportation time trying to get him to agree to giving it to me early, and being semi-fake-mad at him. He said that if he wanted to give it to me early (which he didn't) we would have to at least have dinner at a nice restaurant or something, which was, of course, moot since there aren't any really nice restaurants around that serve anything besides giant steaks.
So, yesterday comes, and I have a really shitty day >.>; Mostly because my pre-work time was spent on the phone with various institutions trying to explain to them that, yes, I'm poor, and, no, I can't give them the money they want right away. And then work comes up, and I'm actually stuck working on something incredibly dull so I can have my break with Roark when he gets off of work and generally angry, pissy mood.
So, I get out of work around 9:30 PM, and Roark's waiting there for me with our car (despite the fact that my parents are on vacation so I'm using my mum's car to drive to work and back), and he wants to get over to Giordano's quickly, so we end up taking the highway, only to find out that their dining room is closed because the AC is broken, and Roark's all pissed and cursing a storm, since it was the only nice-ish place he could think of to take me, but thinks that there might be something open over by the mall (and we're all rushing now since most places close at 10), and having a cigarette in the car, and eventually end up at Joe's Crab Shack because the seater is sympathetic to our plight of working retail and getting out late.
So we sit down, and Roark wants to light another cigarette, and he also orders an alcoholic drink, and just as we're talking he brings up the surprise thing and kind of mentions/motions that it's in his bag that hebrought with and that he wanted me to look through it, so I sneak the bag over to myself and dig through it until I find this little box, which I open to find the ring in it.
And then were all crying and smoking, and Roark's downing his fruity girly drink, but we're all really happy, and I was pretty much bouncing the whole night. Roark was pissed 'cause he wanted to take me somepace nicer, but like I told him, I think our night was actually rather fitting, as we always seem to be trying to figure out someway to eat after I get out of work. We did end up having to drive back to Staples to pick up my mum's car (which by that point I had completely forgotten about), but I must say my night was definately better than my morning/afternoon.
Looking back at it, he was really damn nervous, but at the time it just seemed to me like he was pissed because the place was closed >>;

Aww... the moment I saw the title of the thread immediately I was thinking, "oh, here we go, sounds like wedding bells..." And I was right :)
Somehow with what I've learnt of Roark's reputation around here I never quite figured him for the guy you were describing in that story, but I guess with such a momentous ocassion such as this, one can't help but be nervous/unsettled/any kind of adjective that says "oh my God."
Congratulations to you two!

I have to say the same thing for myself, even if many people here don't believe me. And even though I know Roark doesn't need any endorsement, he is a kind and gentle soul with an iron resolve and a good head over his shoulders.
I can see why Mana is so thrilled. If I were a girl and liked guys that way, I would so sexx0r him. ;)

Ha! I knew he tie that gordian knot sooner or later. Now we wait a year until you walk down that aisle in the grocery store with a white dress and an onion ring in your hand.
Ah it's such a nice day to start again. A such a nice day for a.... white wedding.
I dunno, I find it rather poignant that our good folks at AA are the first ones to hear of the it, since this is where Roark and I met in the first place.
As for real friends, well, most of them have scattered, as happens once high school ends. I have 2 very good real life friends that I still keep in touch with, but they're going through a lot of, er, troubles lately, and it's been hard to stay in contact with them for the past couple weeks.
And, yeah, AA Roark is a lot more bastardly than Real Life Roark
No please, don't thank either Mugs or me for starting AA to begin with. Really, we can't take any credit at all.:rolleyes2
Congratulations, you two. Having known you both for some time, this news makes me feel all warm and tingly inside. Since I'll be seeing you both in a couple of days, drinks are on me. Roark of course gets a Bloody Mary with a celery stalk because, well y'know, he's Veganboy.

Congrats to both of you! I can't say I'm suprised, Roark turns into a pile of lovey-dovey mush whenever Mana is mentioned, a sure sign that she is 'the one'. I'm genuinely happy for both of you, finding real happiness is such an uncertain thing, and you two definitely deserve it.
Somehow, I rather suspect that the story of your engagement-night running around trying to find a good restaurant will become a more endearing tale than if everything had gone smoothly. The only thing that remains now is a celebratory game of drunken strip munchkin.

Last night, I had an away message up on AIM calling for people I know to tell me when they get engaged. That was a reaction to several friends getting engaged and me not finding out until weeks later. I'm glad you told us!
Since two moderators are now planning on getting married, does that mean that they're going to merge into one super-mod? Like, Power Rangers-style?

And I would love to go to your wedding whenever it is but I live in Minnesota and you live if I can remember correctly Illinois, plus I'm not sure if my parents would let me even if I was invited for some odd reason. Either way I wish you and Roark the best of luck for your soon or later to be marriage and afterwards, I hope your marriage will last forever and you'll become Mr. and Mrs. Super mod, or whatever Roarks last name is, unless for once the female will keep her last name instead of changing it. I just wanted to give another thanks, since I have a feeling this thread will be dead by the time Roark and I come back from Tak Tak. It really does mean a lot to me to hear so many people wishing us well.
Don't worry, we'll post more details up about the wedding once, you know, we actually know what we're going to do, and when, and where. It'll probably be at least a semi-big wedding, since I have a humoungous family, and even if I invite only the ones that I know, it'll be a lot of people.
Actually, now that I think about it, wedding gifts are going to be kind of... weird. I mean, we've been living together for a while now, there's nothing like home-y that we need >.>; China I'd break; we have no place for a washer/dryer, furniture we're good on (except maybe some more bookshelves). Hahaha... but you don't have to feed your appendix, clothe your appendix, send it to daycare, but it toys, go to the pediatrician at least 3 or 4 times a year... etc. etc.

Ever seen Rocko's Modern Life? Sometimes you have to do those things; and take it to amusement parks as well.

I will now play the Wedding March on the piano! :D
Well, despite the fact that I'm rusty, I don't have the sheet music, and I've never played it before...
Would you settle for Snow from Noir instead? <<;

Suggestion: Sinking Into the Deeper Water from Ayashi No Ceres.
That would pipe down the atmosphere.

Yes, but isn't the joy of children more appreciated than a slim figure?
Let's think about that one... Hm.
Congrats, by the way!

I dunno; I've caused quite a lot of hell for my mum in the 20 years I've been alive. I'd bet she'd think about it for a least a good few minutes before giving you an answer :p

You know, whenever I ask my mom what was I like when I was a kid, she always seemed to sugar-coat her words. It's like she's censored all the things she really wanted to tell me, because she found it too cruel to say, so she said only good things about me. My gut tells me she's hiding all the hell I've done to her - giving her hair loss, weight issues, monetary hell, restless nights, stress...
Guess a mother's love is forever... until the bitter end.

Save the receipts. Otherwise, you won't be able to hold your children financially accountable when they become of age.

Chances say that they will will screw you over in your retirement home and funeral, however...
Anyways don't forget that childbirth is only the tip of the iceburg. You have to feed, clothe, care, and, most importantly, pay for college.

Hearing you say this makes me feel pessimistic of the prospects of fatherhood :scared: ... even though I can't help it.
Just to add to Shadowmage's word of advice, pray that the children won't be afflicted with any medical complications. My big brother had asthma and internal organ issues and my parents burned up thousands to settle it. My brother still blames himself for troubling his parents even though I keep telling him it's not his fault.

Meh... stuff like that happens... I'm asthmatic myself... and yes... my mom would take me for anlysis quite often and had me under medication my entire childhood. If that happens, it will be easy for me to relate to my kids on that.

That's not really a bad idea.
China is ****ing cheap, and amazinly cool (you won't be lacking things to see).
So if you ever do decide to go somewhere, China, India etc. are good choices.
P.s. Smoking literaly pays for the Chinese military, so they love that here to, for the smokers out there (- Source, Government Official)

Free advice for Roark: make sure Mana's hairdresser doesn't go AWOL on the Big Day. That happened to a friend of mine, and man was she pissed. You could tell from the wedding photos.
(I'm assuming Mana isn't going for the Sinead O'Connor look.)
Oh, yeah, congrats to you both, etc., etc., etc.

Hey, congratulations. That was a pretty adorable proposal story...what with all the cursing, smoking, and drinking. =)
Did you guys meet each other over AA or were you already a couple beforehand?
We met at AA, it's true; mostly through IRC, actually. Thankfully, we lived close enough together (Milwaukee and Chicago) that we were able to meet up with each other as money allowed.

I must admit, I'm surprised that so many of you didn't see this the first time it was going around. Makes me glad I bumped it up, then.
As far as ambulances go, our venue is actually right down the street from a hospital :D Knowing my family, we'll need it once or thrice...

Hell yes, in this crazy world of ours, there always comes a time where something just has to give.
Even when you think you're having money troubles, time troubles, or any other kind of troubles...good things like this happen and we all remember that life is equally enjoyable as it is stressful.
Now there is another celebration to be had in the long game that is life, and it's always nice to hear when awesome people who've worked hard for something find the way to the end of their journey totally satisfied.
Hope you guys get the wedding you've always wanted! :D
