what are your fav 2d fighting games. for me it would be guilty gear x2, followed my street fighter 3rd strike, each have such a good fighting engine that just flows real nicly.
also, if you import 2d fighters, which ones do you recommend?
The King of Fighters series has always been my favorite. Their unique character designs and and fluid gameplay and combo system prove you do not need pretty graphics to be a good game. In the same vein as KoF would be Garou: Mark of the Wolves, another fighter with great character balance with fun for the whole family.
As far as import 2d fighters, if you enjoy the Guilty Gear series, pick up Rumble Fish, another fighter by sammy. If you have a DS, get Bleach: Souten ni Kakeru Unmei. Sure, its an anime fighter, but even if you knew nothing about Bleach you could still enjoy the game. It's made by treasure, the folks who brought us Guardian Heroes, Gunstar Heroes, and the very very popular Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyo Toitsusen.

GGXX also MvC2, those are my favorite two 2d fighters KoF is awesome as well(even though i suck at it...)

Guilty Gear XX Slash is at the top of the list for me. It's an import and is basically "Super Turbo" edition of the Guilty Gear series, but it adds enough for someone who really likes GGXX to import it, even if they already have X2 or #Reload.
I recently got King of Fighters XI and I really think that it is the best KoF I have played. It just feels really solid, and a lot of people who play it with me like it whether they have played the KoF series before or not. Another very worthy import.
As far as american released games, Sure teh Street Fighter Anniversary Collection is great, mostly for Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, but the Alpha Anthology is actually quite good, with the added bonus games Super Gem Fighters Mini Mix and Hyper Street Fighter Alpha, which has to be played to be believed.
Kei knows exactly what he's talking about when he mentions Bleach DS, Garou, and Rumble Fish, though you can't find Rumble Fish 2 out for consoles yet.
Some other honorable mentions are:
Jump Super Stars (DS import)
The Last Blade 2-in-1 (PS2 import)
Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum (PS2 import)

- Marvel v Capcom 2
- Samurai Shodown/Sprits (was never a big FF or AoF fan, so KoF is pretty much out for me)
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Jump Superstars (face it, you've always wanted to see a Naruto-Goku-Kenshin-Kurosaki face off without 5 hours of pre-fight dialogue)
- Street Fighter 2 (no more handcuffs, you freakin cheezers!)
- Karate Champ (you never forget your first)

Do you mean 2D looking fighters like Street Fighter, or fighting games held on a 2D plane (even if it has a 3D look to it) like Super Smash Bros. If it's yes to both, then I have a few games on my list:
Super Smash Bros (N64): It's the only version I have. I don't own the GC version, which didnt seem like that high of a step up from the original. The game was just pure chaotic fun. Possibly the most fun "party" fighting game where you could have multiple friends over. Since it was 4 player, everyone could play.
Marvel vs Capcom 2: It was fast and fun, and could be mastered, like Street Fighter. Anyone could instantly jump in, whether it be button mashers or verterans. Usually, the veterans could come on top, so it was also a test of skill.
Guilty Gear X2: Reload and the Street Fighter series are also very fun games, for the same reasons above as MvC2. The only reason I like MvC2 is a cast of more interesting fighters.
Oh, and I can't forget Mortal Kombat 2 on the Genesis. I owned at that fighting game more than any other.
So all in all, I'd either pick Super Smash Bros or MvC2 as my favourite.

I played Fist of the North Star in arcades a few times. I really would like to own that game as well. It really seems kind of epic. It's all very interesting to a person like myself who has never seen Fist of the North Star at all.

Everybody knows that Capcom vs. SNK 2 is a king amongst fighting games. o: It doesn't get much more balanced than that, and the superb cast helps too.
Yes, there is tons of Balance in the CvsSNK games...if you're a capcom character.

Pedro so totally knowz.
For me, Capcom vs. SNK 2 is the bestest ever. My team of Sakura, Chun-Li, and Ken is un-freaking-beatable. Unless I'm using a joystick. >.>
After that, Street Fighter Third Strike and Capcom vs. SNK are good. I tend to stick with the easy games/characters with easy combos. :)

Super Smash Bros. Melee. Always. Incredible amount of depth.

Today I don't play 2d fighting games anymore but in the past I really liked to play the Street Fighter games and Marvel vs. Capcom.

I never noticed any anti-SNK bias in CvS2. o.o;; And I use characters like Iori, Kim and Yuri all the time with satisfactory results.

Of 2D fighters, I guess Street Fighter I and II would have to be on there. I had this Yu Yu Hakusho fighting game on my computer that I loved, but I forget the name of it. Mortal Kombat is still a really good fighting game. And people who are saying Super Smash Bros, hello? Thats 3D. Probably my favorite though, even though its 3D.

What are your people talking about. Fighting games suck!
Or maybe it is me sucking at fighting games. I really like one of the Guilty Gears, can't remember which, it was for the Xbox. I also had a thing for Mortal Kombat I and II when it came out, cause they were brutal and horribly animated it was funny.
In terms of imports, I have always wanted to play the Jojo fighting game, but never could.

acually you could consider ssb and 2d fighting game because the backround is 3d, but it fights on a 2d plane. also i never really liked mortal kombat, sure it could be fun, but i cant consider it a serious 2d fighter because it has such a broken system. there are combos you can do in that game that will kill your oppent in like 10 seconds, you can also just sit there and trip your oppent over and over again. its to simple, to be a good, or tournament wise 2d fighting game

The main point is that if you are a charge character and you are from Capcom, you get ridiculous amount of power for no reason at all. Yes, Guile, Blanka, Vega, M. Bison, and E. Honda are all super powered over most SNK characters. Sure there are some great SNK fighters with super powered attacks like Haohmaru, but no where near as much as capcom's characters. I love playing CvS2, but balance is not the games strong point.

I was always partial to the ol' school Killer Instinct. No one could touch me.

I see. >.>;; Guess I'll have to do some experimentation to find out more about this. I never found myself to be at a disadvantage when using SNK characters. (And even if it's true, I'm sure CvS2 still outbalances any MK by a longshot. <.<;; )

I guess sorta. I mean it is on Nintendo 64, which is 3d and the characters are all 3d and stuff, but in a way your right.

Are you talking about the PS2 version? well, join the club, man. The JoJo game is pretty cool and is one of the best fighting games on the Dreamcast, but my top favorites are Guilty Gear X2 and Street Fighter 3th Strike becuase Q also just happens to be one of my favorite characters.
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike for me. The game's really fun game especially on two player and it has a great engine.

MvC and MvC2, Capcom vs. SNK 1&2, KoF series, Street Fighter 2, Guilty Gear (though I currently suck at it, it's still a respectable fighter), Super Smash Bros. Melee. Those are just a few.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 is the best IMO, followed by 3rd strike and CVS2.

there's a lot of fighting games I like, but the ones that stand out are guilty gear XX Slash, Melty Blood Re-ACT, King of Fighters series (except for maximum impact). Capcom vs. SNK, and the Samurai Showdown series.

Love 2D Fighters!
Samurai Shodown II - probably one of the best weapon combat titles ever, I love how you have to fight to keep your weapon! Plus the cast of characters are very funny.
Street Fighter II - easy to grasp, and it never truly gets old (check Xbox live!)
Guily Gear X2 - it's full of crazy moves, transcending graphics, and a whole lot of personality. Infinitely flexible ways to avoid your opponent to boot.
Darkstalkers - one of Capcom's more colorful casts, I can honestly say there is no shortage of creativity in the variety of characters presented, and they've got Red Riding Hood!
King of Fighters '98 - the most memorable cast for me, other KOF games were still fun, but most of my favorites were included in this installment.

While I feel that I'm not really that good at 2D fighters, I still enjoy playing them. I've played fighting games such as:
Mortal Kombat- the first fighter I played, although predictably I always chose sub-zero....
Killer Instinct Gold- Good fighting game ported from the arcade to N64. I liked Jagan (i think he was the ninja dude) the most in it.
Finally, my most favourite 2D fighter would be: Capcom Vs Snk 2. Great game to play with a bunch of pals. My usual three would be Mai, Yuri and Ken. Me and my friend spent countless hours playing this during our first year at uni.

OMG!!!
Samurai Showdown (Spirits) Collection
I have been waiting for this for so long. Samurai Showdown 1-5 (note: 5 = ick) and Tenkaichi Kenkyakuden, which is like a best of kind of game with characters from each iteration of the franchise.
OMG. I will pay whatever it takes to play Samurai Showdown 4 again!
