*Quick Note, Sorry If you find Spelling mistakes in this, I was up all last night and now I'm in an all nighter again, Im just loosing concentration lol* Hi is there anyone out there that really loves to draw Manga, I mean really really loves to, then come here and tell me how much you draw, when you draw it and why you draw it and what style do you use.
I draw Manga Every Day (trying to make a book and all) and Im doing in these times-School Days:Before, During, after school and before bed. Week ends: Whenever were not out or relatives arent down. Holidays: Every Spare second I have. I draw it because I have been inspired by many artists and now currently wish to bring out a book on my manga ideas, 4 Artist and Writers have inspired me are Akira Toriyama, Kiyohiko Azuma, Ukyou Takao and Takeshi Maekawa. My Style that I use is the commonish Shoujo, With School girls and magic and demons and Demigods and Goddesses, I love and as I say I hope my book will be finnished soon and I want it to be a sucsess ( But hey not keeping my hopes up ) any way youve heard about my style and reasons for drawing Manga, Lets hear yours.

Well, get prepared for a lecture from all of AA of how Americans can not draw "manga", because they don't come from Japan. They'll all be like, "It's manga-styled drawing! It's manga-styled drawing!" Anyways, glad to hear you're so interested in drawing. It's a good productive way to use up spare time. I have a "manga-styled" graphic novel in progress as well that I've copyrighted, but I havent been keeping up with my drawing as much through the years, as I've been in college for a while. And see the character in my avatar and signature? That's my own manga character, Pyrrhus. And if you're interested in seeing a manga from someone on AA, you should check out Linuts' "manga styled" graphic novel.
And there isnt really a "style" of art that many artists use. It's best to create your own style than to copy someone else's. Even when you try to copy another style, it never comes out exactly like it, so technically, you're always using your own style. And the style that you are referring to is more like a genre or theme to your book.
This should probably be moved to the Art Class Section or to the Manga section at the very least.

Well thanks for that, hope you did well in college and even though I am using a common style I like to think the looks and characteristics of the characters are origional. When I can I will scan some of my practice ones(being someone elses creations) and some of my ones. My problem is Ive been working on logos and the image of me ( you know like Akira Toriyama uses in his books ) and not enough on the characters, ive got my basic stroy I just need to write it and Then draw my characters. For the names Ive use Japanese names with Meanings like my Bishie in his knight wear is Quiet because its a different identity from the Bishie in school that supprisingly the main girls do not like. Also another small twist is that the main characters are picked on and arent popular. Ive already got plans for my final book (Thats if its succsess ful<<<??? lol)
Any way hope to talk soon,

Oh and by the way your character looks super awasome

Well, that was coherent.
On-topic:
I wish I could draw. As anyone who's played against me in iSketch knows, though, I can barely draw stick figures.

So just try that. :-D

Hmm. Haven't logged in for a while, and I stumble upon this thread? Am currently trying to make another manga (finished a 50-page story 5 years ago, and it suxxorz) for two reasons: no worthwhile show on TV, and BLEACH inspired me. Never thought you could actually make an almost cliche-less story work... but that anime sure proved a lot (up to the Soul Society arc, at least).
Hey, I was drawing since I was a kid too! ^^ Back then I only got to watch Smurfs, but it was all good. I drew my first anime-style figure when I tried copying Sailormoon off a teeny tiny trading card back when I was 10 yrs. old.
As for style, I'm pretty good at the Loli-type... but after a 2 year hiatus from even touching my drawing pad, am trying to learn different styles. I drew my sig (below) on Flash MX, same as the image below. It's a kyubi no kitsune, yay!

BTW, what medium do you guys use when making your manga?
I use plain ol' drawing pad, 0.3 / 0.5 tech pens, pencil, ruler and eraser.

Well what Ive done is ive brought a set of sketch pencils and a normal writting pencil. A writting pad, Sketch pad and an expensive sketch pad. What im doing is storyboarding in the writting pad e.g
Chapter 1
Page 1
.Goku Flew High
.Goku: I cant see Friezas ship.
That is just an example I have my own characters that I made up. The bullet points represent each little picture and the collons ( : ) I put them after a name when that person talks. I do that until I have the whole story. Now the cheep sketch pad I use for warming up and practiceing and also it has all my character information. Now my expensive pad I use to sketch the Characters. Soon what I will be doing is scanning all of those pictures to the PC and aranging them to look like a comic. I do not want it book size I want it A4 but the Amount of pages is a lot. Then Im designing the front covers and adding and adding to it on the PC. then ill put it together and send it off to my dads friends wife who is a publisher :-D So thats how I'm doing it lol.
My Demon leader is taking ages, its the hair thats bugging me I want it weird and witch like but not too witch like, scary looking and that type of thing.

Have you taken drawing lessons? ^^ where did you learn to make comics/manga? I just read different manga and manwha and take note of their paneling styles.
I've drawn a few comics in my time. Yeah, it's done in a manga style, but I'm just going to say it once now and be done and over with it, instead of repeating myself over and over. I very rarely draw anything not manga styled, since I can't draw real people for shit.
It was fun, but frustrating; I just couldn't figure out how to get some things worked out right, and ended up getting pissed off and pitching them. There are a lot of things I would love to draw out, but my artistic abilities are very lacking, so I settle to just plain writing them instead. If I were to try and draw any kind of comic again, it would probably be in the form of a short 3 paneled thing, like most webcomics, but even that I highly doubt I will.
If you really want me to answer your questions:
When: When I drew comics, it was mostly during high school, and now I carry that on and do most of my drawing these days while at work.
Why: Why? Because it's fun? I never had sme sort of ulterior motive when I used to draw my comics. I never wanted to be famous, or have everyone reading it or that sort of thing (I realized it was too shitty even back then). Mostly, I drew, and I still draw, because I get enjoyment out of it.
What Style? I definately have my own style; it's much too terrible to be somebody else's. My style has definately evolved over the years, but I must admit that Takeuchi Naoko was a big influence on my art, and you can still see bits of it here and there. Other, but less obvious influences include Fujishima Kousuke, Katsura Masakazu, and Okuda Hitoshi.
I'll second checking out Linut's comic though. It's made of win and gold and all sorts of good stuff.

Same here >< And I thought I was the only one....
Well, I'm at least one other person who can't draw real people either, and it's not for lack of trying. Maybe my brain got fizzled since I was drawing manga art before I ever tried drawing a real person and now my brain can't handle real proportions.

Well really ive been learning for quit a few years. Ive picked things up over the years, i have a very good school art teacher and also if your feeling uncomfident that you cant draw to save your lives then might I suggest buying the books to teach you, if all else fails theres always the option of taking up tennis lol
Andy
As much as I enjoy a good book, I don't find it to be a good solution to learning how to produce art. Personally, I found all the "How to Draw Manga" books to be rather shite. The most useful books I've found with art are the scientific ones about anatomy, but even that's stretching it a bit. Art is something much too personal to be taught in a book.
And even though I can't draw people as much as I'd like, it doesn't stop me from drawing what I can, which is quite a bit. Mostly, I tend to do a lot of abstract stuff, and I'll sketch out character designs for my books as well.

"How to Draw Manga" books to be rather shite
Hah. First time I saw those things (the first releases), I went "WTF? My sis can draw better than this?! And she's in grade school!" ...which was not an exaggeration.
The grids and thingies..and the explanations on how to 'draw' trees and grass... if I didn't know how to draw, I would have NO idea what they were trying to tell me >_< But some people do learn from those books(?)... amazing.

But as to the topic title of the thread, Shojo cuz I love girly romances that have a twist. As to what style, ummm is kawaii a style? (kawaii - cute) I'm trying despretely (cant spell) to draw chibi! So......Difficult.....Yet so simple...

Well I started by just copying drawing what I see, then I go to the shops last month and I found this how to draw Manga Shoujo book, I learnt a few things from that, But as I am typing this I just this minute got back from my Holiday and while I was there I got another Manga book and it has only told me what I already know since ages. So yes I do think some books are just LAZ but some can be good. I have been drawing quit well before books but quit a lot better after my first one, sooo they can be good.

cool would love to see that, I also am on chapter three lol. But mine will be a big comic book and the sentances are speech bubbles so its easy to write very easy. One thing I regret over the years is not drawing backgrounds. The only back ground I was ever good at is drawing a scene where Radditz comes out of his Saiyan ship with a crator in the floor with a mountain out back:shocked:

They Do!?!?!??!?
uhm yeah, i did ^^*sheepish grin* it did not make me a great artist since i still can't draw very decently but i did pick up some basics which set me above the rest of my school's population who content themselves with stick people.
i find drawing manga really difficult, not only in terms of the artistic rendition parts but the in developing a decent story line as well. ^^
The most useful books I've found with art are the scientific ones about anatomy
i agree with that ^^

which set me above the rest of my school's population who content themselves with stick people.
^^ it's so fulfilling when someone exclaims "Wow, how do you do that? hehe"
but the in developing a decent story line as well. ^^
I'll relate to you what I do: first, I decide on a theme/genre (like action, romance, etc.); then I design the characters, and make the story revolve around them (professionals do it the other way around, they make the characters fit the story). Also, when a character pops up in your mind, draw it. Even if it's just a rough sketch, someday you might look back and say "hey, this looks really cool, and it'll work for my story." ^^

My favorite "How to Draw Manga" books are "How to Draw Manga" by Katy Coope, which is excellent for beginners, and "Manga Mania" by David Okum, who teaches more advanced techniques.
I'm working on my own manga-style comic as we speak. Check it out in the "My E-manga" thread in the Art Class section.

http://www.bladeengine.com/BladeEngine/overview.php
That's a free visual/kinetic novel engine for western enthusiasts that came out recently, not really for manga use. And, no, visual novel pros in Japan don't use that engine at all. Too bad the ones they use only has Japanese documentation (though entirely free). There is another English one that's just as easy to use... RenPy... I think that's what it's called. But things like that are easy to program, and I'd much rather make one from scratch.
I know there are programs that help though. I forgot the name, but there is a manga creation program that lets you set up panels, and allow you to focus on each individual panel while drawing. It seems like a good way to keep things clean on your pages.
Oh as for manga-ish stuff... I have two webcomics online. One on the front page of this very well established Academy (tee hee), and one you can easily find the link for below my sig. And yes, I do manga style, because I do prefer it and that I can get away with certain attentions to detail (mainly because I'm still an amateur :p).
The best way to learn to draw anything, though, is just drawing things from real life. Take photographs of people, places, etc and use those as references. "How to Draw Manga" books are good ways to teach you what sort of tools you can use and what tones are affective, but otherwise I wouldn't rely on them for too long (in fact, I don't think I've ever bought any of those books). If you want to do manga style, then read more manga. But don't just read them, take notice of how panels work and what perspective they use in scenes to create certain effects.
Uuuh I can go on and on on this subject, so I'll stop there. Take note, this is all coming from an amateur who only does this as a hobby:p.
As for the original questions...
When: Since 2004, and will keep doing so until I get bored. Or if my other projects finally take higher priority.
Why: Because my imagination needs a place to express itself... In one form or another...
What style: One that is common in the east...
I'll second checking out Linut's comic though. It's made of win and gold and all sorts of good stuff.
Hey, whats this wet stuff on my eye? Oh, I think it's a "OMG SOMEONE LIKE MY WORK" tear :D.

And here I was posting my manga when I first came to AA, only to have my art criticized from every angle, when I've been drawing my whole life. Yet you get all the glory after just starting...I got owned by a noob...:thud:
But seriously, the criticism did help (I've been trying harder to work on my anatomy and different angles), and it would be fun to post my current progress on my manga. That is, if I could stop being so lazy, and actually finish my work by colouring it (my whole manga is coloured), as well as drawing the rest of the thing. Also, you've been more consistant with your work while I've been taking it easy the last few years because of a ton of schoolwork. Anyways, good luck to the future of your manga. You'll probably be starting your third project by the time I get out of college in a year and proceed to finish the darn thing.
When you finish your manga, get rich, and share the success with all of your fellow artists, let's all get drunk and play ping pong! The drinks are on you.

I would like to ask: Did you draw your sig and avatar?
Yep. I drew, scanned, inked, and CG'ed it, as it sais in my sig (the character on there is my main character, Pyrrhus). Holy crap, I can't believe how long it's been since I made that. December 31st, 2002 is dated on the full picture that I have. It's been 4 years since I've really used Photoshop. After this school year I'm really going to have to go into high gear to get my colouring skills up to par, and surpass them.
My whole picture is below, which is my highest level of colouring (and pretty much my highest level of art, although I've gotten a bit better with clothing and faces). My first 5 manga pages aren't coloured as good as this, but I'm hoping that the rest will look this good. And yes, I realize that this isn't an art thread, but I just wanted to show my style of art and colouring for my manga:

i draw a lot. ^-^v i actually started drawing when i "discovered" anime. (thank you, yuyu hakusho XD) and haven't stopped since then. ^-^
when: well, whenever i'm in class. don't get me wrong, i just want my hands doing something while listening to the lecture. ^o^ and yeah, i draw a lot better when i'm bored (practically half of my everyday college life. XD) anyone there with the same predicament as me? XD
why: well, it is fun!!! besides, it is one way of expressing yourself and making good use of your time. ^-^ besides sleeping, that is. XD
what style: manga style, i guess. X_x i actually hone my drawing skills by watching anime, and try adapting the style. though i greatly agree about creating your own style. ^-^
what do i use: steadler pencils. (pardon the spelling. o.o) what i really love about drawing is because i can "shade" it in numerous versions. i'm never really a great fan of "coloring" my art (because i can't color well XD) so then, i rather shade. and yeah, a nice, white coupon bond.
haven't really imagined myself doing my own manga, but what i have accomplished is a comic/manga book of noli me tangere and el filibusterismo during my high school days. (it is required t-t) numerous bloody sleepless nights, i tell you. and in the end, my teacher asked me if she could keep it. *sigh* oh well.
just keep on going making your own book! ^-^ i'll be one of your avid fans someday. b^-^d yosh!!!!
