It's up. You want to discuss it. Do so here.

Linuts, Niner, Zee'd, I know I said it already in the news section, but thanks again for all of your hard work. :bowing: Also thanks to the AA staff and mods who put in their :twocents: .

Good so far and and I can't wait to see what wacky thing SC is doing. It's all I got to say *Thumbs up* Though I'm guessing the Metroid toy in the background is for the Video game section?

EDIT: Now I'm wondering what the story is behind Yuri

EDIT2: and who else is gonna be in the comic, Dam suspense.

AHHHHH

Finally, it's here. I was contemplating making a thread about when this was going to start not even 3 days ago. Congratulations, guys.

And on the front page news section: it's "a journal of everyday life", not "live"

Edit: And I wouldn't worry too much about the comic not being colored. I'm sure (hoping) later ones will be colored eventually. Most webcomics start off black and white and are colorized once popularity and extra help is gained.

Wow, so you guys do comics here? Well good job. Although the art could have been better... namely Annie May's arm on the last page, it looked a little off.

But who am I to judge anyway?

Whatever, awesome job and I can't wait until the nexy update! :D

Wow~~! I haven't been frequenting the board lately, so had no idea the comic idea was actually being developed! Is this going to updated on a regular basis, or is it a casual venture?

Either way, it's damn cool ^^ Recognise the artwork, as usual, great stuff. Will Vanchu be splatted each episode/arc, in true Kenny tradition? I hope so!

Lies. Yuri will turn out to be a bish who's one of those lesbian-within-a-guy things. They will fall for each other and have millions of babies and other assorted reverse-trap-shoujo-ai stuff

And if it doesn't, I sure as hell am writing a bad fanfiction about it. :p

God damn it! He was the reason why it took us a whole freakin' year! AAAAAAHHH!!! :D

Anyway, thanks everyone. I also want to thank Kain for giving us the opportunity to get this started. I'd also want to thank the rest of the AA staff for helping out with ideas and dicussions, especially SC for helping out with the doing the speech bubbles when Zee'd suddenly disappeared :p.

BTW, the current strips are actually the beginning of a whole introductory arc. I guess Kain decided to put them up in segments instead of the whole batch. Nonetheless, look forward to meeting more new characters, yuri, loli, vanhu-upper-cutty and other things that ends with -y....

Oh and they are not colored, because that will probably take another year... And the fact that I no longer have any (reliable) programs to color stuff with at the moment...

To add to the questions...

Is that comic based out of these forums or out of the website itself? I suppose it doesn't really matter but since there are random forum people making it, I didn't see it clear whether or not it was based off of the original.

EDIT: Also, why was the title "Late For Class" chosen? Just out of curiosity.

My guess is based on the beginning where Annie was late for her meeting with Yuri, and I'm also as well wondering the same question thet Neo is asking.

We wanted to use characters we already had in the Annie May Fanart thread at first... But in the end we decided not to. One being a few of the students there are no longer visiting AA. Secondly, we didn't want to show any favoritism among students.

"OMG! He's on the comic! I wants in! I wants in!!!!!"

As a result, we have to make a completely new cast from scratch, with the exception of a few characters. Professors and AA staff may show up now and then. And there MAYBE plans that we will set up contests to put students into the comic as a reward (Don't count my word on it though :p).

Like the original, there's really no base on anything. It's "A Day in a Life" format where things just happen, with the occasional arcs now and then. But rather than just focusing on Annie May entirely, there will be stories on all the characters.

As for the title "Late For Class"... I don't know. It was the only one we could all agree with :p.

So does this comic already have a script written up for the majority of it (or ever first few chapters) or are you guys just making it up as you go along? Just curious. I also recommend that all AA graduates should be added in due time...joking.

But seriously, a good start on the comic. Also, how frequently can we expect updates? I hope it doesnt take another year for the next few pages.

You guys realize every serialized comic keeps a backlog, right? It's called not blowing your whole load in one shot, a.k.a. sandbagging.

These guys fail to realize I have been chained to the computer for almost 3 months between making reviews and becoming the pinch hitter as far as lettering goes when the original one failed to show up when the final strips were ready for the word balloons.

Relax guys, we have plenty of material already done and more can be expected to be produced. Linuts and I have reached a good and streamlined way to work this process after several exchanges of PMs, e-mails and smoke signals. We also have a lot of good brainstorming going on with niner, Kain and other mods and professors who can get really creative whenever they stop drinking moonshine or Polish vodka for a minute or two.

Linuts
07-25-2006, 09:23 AM
I will go into more detail and repeat what was already said before, just so that people will stop complaining about there being only 3 strips :p.

There are a total of 15 pages already finished, and also one page that may never see the light of day. Yes, those are the pages that we've spent the last year planning, brainstorming, drafting, inking, scripting, paneling, arguing, compressing, decompressing, mutilating, rapi-.... They are just waiting in the backlog, as Kain already mentioned. We are NOT doing an epic, or a love drama, or anything that focuses on a single plot, but there may be short story arcs that have these themes. So yes, in a way, we are doing scripts as we go along, but we already have plenty of ideas brewing in our corner of the universe to keep up with updates.

I always loved how SC has been portrayed in the Annie May Art Thread, so this makes no difference. Once again it is great to see the doctor at AA, and the little scene with the samurai and the nerd was quite funny and got me to laugh.

I'm just wondering what's going to happen with Yuri Forlesbain...not like the name has anything to do with her character. I recommend you guys should use OVA as an upcoming story arc, but I'm just glad that updates are coming already.

To be honest guys that last salvo wasn't very funny. I understand the good intentions behind not using too many actual forum goers, but the problem with that is that you lose a lot of what makes this comic funny, seeing our fellow forum goers (or in the case of people like van, people who haven't posted for years) put into funny situations. Hell in some cases it would probably be hilarious just to see the way they're drawn.

There are TONS of web comics that parody anime and anime culture, and I don't see why you would want to try and emulate an all ready tired genre. I think you guys should just not worry so much about other peoples feelings. There are very few people on this forum who actually care whether or not they get featured in this comic. Why try to please those few people by essentially cutting out this comic's main joke?

And I do appreciate all the hard work that has been out into this web comic. I just don't see the pointing of wasting your effort on a watered-down version of this comic that really isn't as good as it could be.

C0MPL3X
07-30-2006, 11:23 PM
I'm guessing one of the other important reason why forum people are not being used is because it alienates non-forumers who visit AA site just for reviews+news+reports etc. Although I can't exactly say the results has been a success, I too appreciate the efforts. And I personally think pure Linus was and still is much better (you can kind of see some awkward combination between different artist, not to mention original linus wits in other anie comics). But who knows maybe this comic could possibly in an unusually extraordinary chance pickup and be better than golds in anniemay thread.

Major Tom
07-31-2006, 01:31 AM
I also saw the Harima likeness of Janitor.....Yet when it comes to Janitors, I always think of Lavi, the poor soul in the old RPG thread who, due to a clerical error, got his career test back labelled as janitor, and died when he fell down the stairs. Only then to be ressurrected and serve as an undead janitor in hell.

Though I didn't see the need for Annie hurling, though. That didn't come off as really funny. Perhaps a disgusted look, but the dribbling vomit was rather off.

General Suburbia

I dunno, the dialogue isn't going over well with me. Although the biggest problem that I have is that the pictures aren't engaging enough; the characters and their faces especially lack the "umph" that would produce a laugh out of me. And watching them react to things don't produce the desired results. Like Major Tom, I thought the throwing up was kinda dumb.

If the drawing could come off more spontaneous and less plain, I would love it. I absolutely loved the initial pictures of the "janitor" with the excess of detail and sketch marks, I thought the moment was very GTO. If the characters could show a more overreactive or just more imaginitive reactions, it could be awesome. lol, all I can think of now is onizuka and his many incredible facial expressions.

Oh, that's vomit? I was wondering what it was, and settled on spaghetti.

But if she's throwing up, how can she talk? In anime, people talk and ingest food all the time. But I don't think it's nearly as easy to talk and throw up at the same time. It takes skill.

Also, Sarah Sarinnger looks much younger than fourteen. I didn't properly read that text box when I first read it, and thought she was eight or possibly nine. Which, I have to admit, makes the comic a lot funnier...

Anyway, great job to everyone who worked on / is working on the project. I'll be awaiting the next comic more patiently than these guys.

Sadly, I must agree. Linuts is a great artist, but the official Annie May comics lack the creativity that made the unofficial thread a classic. I believe a lot of it is due to the lack of outside sources to create comedic scenerios that Linuts can manipulate. In other words... we need more contributions to the unofficial Annie May comics to get the created juices flowing in the official one. Sadly, I don't see this happening anytime soon as long as nobody takes the lead.

As far as the hurling I thought it unnecessarily funny, it reminded me of the scene in 4 Rooms where Tim Roth throws up after seeing a dead body under the bed. As far as AA goers wanting to be in the thread or have others in the thread there are the contests and if Linuts is afraid of excluding other members why not just change the names and keep the details for example Ninja Delusionalist, or ShadowPawn! :P

Or another set of stories from the AA rpg thread, which, though we planned to have it done, has fallen apart several times and with Niner seemingly silent lately and with me probably noticeably unable to be around much, I'm not much sure how this is going to happen anytime in the future

The last comic was fairly funny, but they've been progressively getting a bit worse to me with each installment. The Pikachu joke with the two legs was a bit funny, and the janitor part reminded me a bit of GTO, but the dialouge and introduction of too many characters at once is a bit of a letdown for me. And the vomit thing was pretty unnecessary. There could have been other ways to indicate that she was vomiting, such as pulling out a doggy bag, barfing offscreen, or hey, even just turning her head around to face away from the viewers. It just didnt look that funny (moreso gross, but in an unfunny way) , and looked kinda like oatmeal just pouring out of her mouth.

Anyways, I still appreciate the effort that's been put into this. What we need is less characters introduced in such a short period of time, and more good jokes relating to many different animes or anime genres (since this is AA).

Actually, that type of puking is fairly common in anime. Watch/Read Video Girl Ai as an example.

While everyone is entitled not to like it, it almost seems you guys are trying to make it sound like it doesn't look like anime/mangaesque puking, while in reality it does.

Whether you find it funny or not, that's another story.

True, the vomit thing (which isnt't really a good topic to discuss during my lunch break, but anyways.....) does have some anime/manga references. DNA squared (I still don't know how to to superscript....) has the main character puking in a very similar style on a number of occasions, and I'm fairly sure it happened in Girls Bravo 1st season as well. In what I have seen, the vomit response is in reaction to a allergy of phobia.

That isn't really the issue here, though. For me, anyway. I don't think it was the correct or most humouress response for Annie. Yuri's response was a better one, because it was more vague. She could have been trying to hold it in, or covering her face in fear and embarressment, supressing a scream or whatever.

Perhaps an angry embarressed look with a Janitor with a punched in face in the background.....cliche, I know, but probably would come off more funny than this.

I do like the fact that Yuri (I got the name joke) is in love with Annie May now, and I wouldn't mind seeing more storys about that. Though I say you should take a break and work on the material because I still perfer Doctor very strangelove the most. EDIT: I do have one question, is Duscha a boy or girl, because the Bio says female but Annie said "Wait, Duscha, why are you here...This isn't the boys" it sounded like Annie pointed out that this was the girls locker room only to be very wrong.

I don't quite know if they're "in love;" people swoon when they see an idol that they aren't necessarily in love with. I took it to mean that Yuri's just overcome with emotion at the fact that Annie is willing to "put her life on the line" to save her.

Although her name is Yuri Forlesbian...

Anyway, I gotta say that I really like the last cell on the second comic. The whole comic, she's either forcing a smile and dance, or she's more worried than ever. Here, you actually get to see her with a mad face. She actually seems well suited for it (ie., she's hot when she's mad).

Ignore Shadowmage, AC. The *@#$-girl thing is an inhouse joke from the fan art thread. I'd have to find the exact comic, but it was a pretty amusing one.

Anyways, on the current lot of Late for Class, well I don't think it has been commented on because it's, well nothing special, either way. It's not bad, but it's not really good, just amusing.

The second comic was a bit bleh, but the first and third got a good chuckle out me. I quite like the idea of a panty (boxer) thief being a girl.......I do not remember ever seeing any anime where that is the case, it's always some peverted boy.

Not true.

90% of the first arch introducing all the characters was conceived by Niner. The whole finish with they "hey, your hand is on my butt" was me.

All the balloons, typography and special effects are done by yours truly.

My mistake. I forgot how long editing in bubbles, text, and special effects take.

Storywise, the characters are all cliches and they lack the punch of their original counterparts. Yes, writing takes time, but I frankly don't see much payoff in this department. (Okay, some of the one-liners were undeniably effective.)

I was wondering why there wasn't a thread for the web-comic and right when it struck my mind this thread popped into view.

I really like the idea for the character Annie May. To me, she seems to have a very cut-to-the-chase type of attitude about things and is a very no-nonsense type of person. Oddly enough Annie May reminds me of a social worker in some respects of wanting everything to be peaceful. Her role in the story, to me, has always represented a sense of irony since she is the mascot of the acclamed Anime Academy and yet she is so stereotypically straight-faced wheras the other characters (whom I've noticed are based on several real-life people) are very much care-free and generally live their lives like animated characters would.

That may be looking a little to far into things...

On the technical side, it looks very good in some chapters while on the following page everything seems like a bunch of blobs pasted together. This may be intentional, I have no idea, but I think consistency in artwork is very importatn in anime and manga.

Examples:

Page 2 (The rodent looks a little defomred...)
Page 3 (Annie's arm seems very out of proportion...)
Page 4 (Suddenly in proportion...)
Page 5 (The clothes look chunky...)
Page 6 (...but suddenly look awesome here...)

I could go through all the pages... I'll try to point ouit bigger ionconsistencies later on but hopefully that demonstrates my point.

Anyway, pushing the flaws aside I think the comic-team has done a great job thus far. Keep up the good work, I am definatly anticipating future additions.

I whole-heartedly hope that that happens in the future and if I can do anything to help steer the comic and it's authors in the right direction I'm more than happy to do so. Granted, all that leaves is critisism but I figure even a tiny bit helps.

Well, this whole thing is settled then.

Oh man! We're gonna have to find something else to talk about in this comic! :(

Like how its getting better?

I felt like ressurrecting this thread, because I just noticed that these comics are still being updated. And after having read the last dozen or so that I neglected for months, I can honestly say I'm actually looking forward to newer strips.

Progress FTW!

Yeah, it is sort of getting better but I think the Yuri-Annie relationship should blossom more.
