Whisper of Hope
A young girl laid cozy in her small bed as the moon vanished, fading slowly into the hill sides. Then a glorious burst of orange-yellow came up into the sky. The soft beams gently touch her face as she turned onto her stomach. Hearing the rattling of noises downstairs, Akena quickly covered her head with the pillow. Giving up on the pillow she tossed it aside and kicked off the blankets. Akena moved her lush black hair over her shoulder and looked around slowly. Adjusting her light blue pajamas and sat on the edge of her bed. ‘Another day filled with the people I love.’ Rolling her heavy eyes then covered her mouth as she softly yawned. Sluggishly making her way to her door and walked towards the stairs. Looking around the kitchen, Akena sat down at the table. Picking up a box with a bee on the cover then poured herself some Honey Net Cheerios slowly. Out of nowhere a man standing 6’1 leaned down to Akena and lifted the soft pieces of her hair away from her ear. “What do you think you’re doing?! Get your sorry hind out of that chair and get changed! In ten minutes and counting, we’ll be heading to the camp site!” Dropping Akena’s hair and he walked out of the kitchen towards the front door. Akena has been use to this ‘punishment’ by her foster parents. Ever since that terrible plane crash that took her parents lives several years ago, Akena has been at this house. Sighing slowly, she picked up the milk container and poured some milk into her bowl. Placing it down she picked up her spoon as her bowl slid away from herself. Kyo, a young boy with blonde hockey hair and sharp green eyes, placed Akena’s bowl in front of herself. “Thanks, I was waiting for mother to pour me another one.” Taking a few bites of the cereal slyly as Akena’s face grew hot. “Give me back my cereal! This is not funny!” Pushing Kyo away from her cereal and placed it back in front of herself. Eating the rest of it then walked over to the sink. Rinsing off the droplets of milk and the random pieces of Honey Nut Cheerios off her bowl, then placed it down in the rack.
Several minutes later Akena and the rest of her foster family were sitting in the car on the way to the camp site. The mother looked over her shoulder to Kyo, “dear, did you remember to pack everything?” Kyo nodded in agreement as he picked up Akena’s backpack and opened it. “Why did you bring this ratty old sketchbook with you?” Flipping through the first few pages as it was quickly was snatched out of his hands. “What are you doing?! Stop touching my things.” Breathing out heavy she turned away, holding her sketchbook close to her heart. “Please ask before you go into my things. There are only a few things I love in this world and this is one of them.” Kyo crossed his arms tightly and looked to the front seat. “Hiroshi! Akena isn’t being nice!” The dark blonde haired male turned his head sharply and stared in the direction of Akena. “Give Kyo back whatever it was you took from him, you freeloader.” A creamy white hand rested on Hiroshi’s arm, “dear, wouldn’t it be best if Akena just stayed on her side and Kyo stay-” Hiroshi quickly reverted towards the female. “Emi don’t tell me what to do! I know what’s best for our boy, if he wants that..” Looking in the rear view mirror to Akena then continued talking, “sketchbook he can have it.” Akena shook her head negatively, “no this is mine. I’m not giving it to him and you can’t make me.” Placing it back into her backpack then placed it beside her, resting on it lightly. The car grew silence, that even if a needle was dropped, it would be as loud as a horn.
Slowly, Akena closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. Her world became hazy as everything mixed together. Lots of vibrant colours and shapes ran past her face. Akena held onto two warm hands tighter as she walked down a path towards a huge circus tent. Looking up slowly to the two figures, their faces were blurred. But she could still recognize her mother and father. ‘Mommy, can we see the two headed pony?’ Looking back to the tent at saw a huge clown pass her as everything blurred together again. Everything leveled off again, but this time Akena sat in a blue seat with tacky blue material, between the two figures she held onto at the circus. The her attention turned to a lady at the front of the room, that wore a professional royal blue blazer and a skirt and held a microphone close to her face. “Thank you passengers for flying in the National Jet of Tomorrow. I’ll be your flight attendant this evening. Please sit back and enjoy your ride.” With that closing note she placed the microphone down and took her seat.” After the plane took off into the air, Akena got out of her seat quickly. “Mommy, mommy! Look! We’re high in the air.” She said as she ran to the closest window. The plane lights turned off, randomly, in the room as the plane started to shake. Akena turned quickly to see that the opposite side of the plane caught on fire as her eyes went blurry and everything went dark.
Minutes passed like hours, until she heard a distant voice. “This one is still alive,” a young female’s voice called out. “She’s staring to come back to us. Poor kid, she looks so small,” a man mentioned. “She’s losing a lot of blood from her leg and forehead.” Akena slowly opened her eyes and everything was shadowy and unclear. Once she was taken into a car with needles and cabinets, she heard that man’s voice again. “There was only two survivors from that plane crash. They both seem in pretty good shape from what they went through. Once we get to the hospital everything should be fine.” The only words Akena could get out of her mouth was, “an… am-ambulance?” Gagging from her dry throat and the man gave Akena some water. Turning her head slowly to another body that lied beside herself. This young girl came into focus, though everything else around her remained unclear. She was a young strawberry blonde, blue eyes, looked about Akena’s age and had a long cut along her left arm and a few burns on her legs and stomach. Then the suddenly this girl moved further and further away. Akena turned her head again to see that the stretcher she was on moved out of the ambulance and went beside one of the doors. Loud sirens and doctors talking about ways that they could fix these girls up was all that could be hear for miles. She watched as this girl was taken down the hall on her own stretcher. Just before Akena was taken away from this her she yelled. “I’m Akena, what’s your name?” A soft voice replied, “I’m Sa-Sakiera.” Taking small breath in she continued, “after this is fi-finished, I hope I can see you a-again…” Once Sakiera was out of her view, there was a distant noise. This noise grew louder and louder with each passing second.
Suddenly Akena’s eyes flew open to see Hiroshi holding his hand over the horn. “I don’t want your skin flakes all over my car. Get out now!” Hiroshi growled then walked out of the car and slammed the door. Akena’s eyes were opened wide as she examined the area around her. She was back inside her foster parents’ car. Sliding down a bit more into her seat, Akena sighed. Whispering, “it was all just a nightmare… A huge nightmare.” Closing her eyes as the images passed through her head quickly. Jumping up out of her seat she shook her head. “Though… I wish it was a nightmare.” Staring out her window towards a few trees that swayed in the wind. Without warning a fist hit the window and Hiroshi’s face was pressed against the window. “Get out of my car right now.” His voice was muffled against the tinted window. Akena jumped a second time, ‘at this rate I’m going to have a heart attack before I’m twenty…’ Holding her hand over her heart and closed her eyes. Akena listened to her heart beat as it returned to normal. Sliding out of the car with her backpack over her right shoulder, Akena walked over to a few poles and material, that looked to be a tent, laid flat on the ground. Akena looked up at the clear blue sky, “this is going to be a long day…”
The sky was filled with radiant oranges and reds with the bright yellow orb caressing the shimmering water below. Akena stood in the water as it softly flowed around her ankles. She slowly walked into the water as the water gave off summer excitement. Once she was deep enough, Akena swam around gracefully. Front crawl, back crawl, breast strokes, you name she could do it. Turning onto her stomach slowly as she saw something sparkle from the corner of her eye. Akena quickly stopped to investigate what this was. Searching the water below herself she saw a shimmer again. “What the,” taking in a deep breath and dove down. Placing her fragile hand down on a rock and opened her eyes. Seeing a few pieces of coral with colorful fishes swimming about. Slowly releasing a few bubbles and moved her hand down slowly feeling a box shape. Her lungs started to feel heavy and held the air in her mouth tightly. Gripping onto this box she swam to the surface as fast as she could. Almost flying right now she gasped for air as her body caught the last rays of light. Breathing slowly she sank a bit down into the water and headed for shore and went into her tent.
Later that night when all was silent she laid in her sleeping bag inside the small tent and watched the bugs crawl along the outside. Turning her head slowly and looked at the small black box she pulled out of the water. It had a small golden plaque with lime covering what was engraved.
