Kajiura Yuki - Fiction A compilation album from several anime series, and some original stuff (I think). I normally like Kajiura's stuff a lot, but I wasn't overly impressed by this CD. I wasn't too partial to the arrangements for Canta per Me and Salva Nos presented here. Still, not a bad CD, just not one of my favourites.

Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto (Somedays Dreamers) OST While the series itself may not be the best out there, it certainly has a beautiful soundtrack. This is one thing I've been keeping eye out for ages, and seeing it at AVCon made it an immediate purchase, no questions asked. I was surprised to hear the entire main theme, it's quite a nice tune.....but the pianist in me was saying away with those Irish wind instruments, Piano all the way! After listening to it, about 2/3 of those songs are going into my favourites playlist.

Now, to find some sheet music for it and to get my lazy arse up an practise that piano......

Here we go again!

Last CD purchase. But I want something about the CD. Your favorite tracks, your least favorite tracks, the album art, the production, the overall rating of the CD. Gimmie something!

And yes your posts will be deleted if you don't talk about the CD.

The last CD I bought was Born by Bond

It's their debut album and it's pretty good. I really like Bella Donna and the remix of Victory. Duel and Alexander the Grear are also a fun songs to listen to.

I'd give it an 7.5/10

Ah, Back to Basics by Christina Aguilera (Pre-ordered)

Since theres only one song out from the CD right now I can't rate it but I'd give the first single, Ain't No Other Man, an 8/10. I love the song but I don't like hearing it constantly like I usually do with other Christina works.

Yentown Band (featuring Chara) - Montage: Yeah...this CD came out awhile ago, but I've been collecting every Chara CD, and this is one I haven't got yet. It's basically the sountrack to the movie Swallowtail Butterfly that Chara stared in in '96 (same year she met Tadanobu Asano...you know, the guy in Ichi the Killer. I'm so Chara obsessed o_O). Anyway, the music's beautiful, as usual. I don't think Chara's ever song a bad song before. The only down side is that it's really short (only 8 tracks). Actually, a lot of her CDs are kinda short...which makes me sad. Mmm, I'd guess I'd give this about 8.5/10 :D.

I lucked out big time. When I moved out of home, I could not manage to weasel my sisters copies of "Rock and Roll Part 3" and "The Double Donkey Disk", both by Ozma. Then just yesterday, I found them both for 10 bucks a piece, so I'm super happy.

Rock and Roll Part 3: A solid CD start to finish. Highlights of this album: Apple Trees, Baseball, Natalie Portman, and In Search of 1988. What really makes this band special to me is the use of keyboard synth in the songs. Star pulls no punches as she shows off her skills with the keyboard (to no surprise really. This was their first album, you need to make a lasting impression).

Double Donkey Disk: This is the ultimate driving at night album for me. Just seems to fit the mood the best while listening to it. As far as the band is concerned, this is two albums rolled into one. The first 5 songs are heavily inspirired by Russian folk songs (including a rocking rendition of Korobeiniki). The last 5 songs are more traditional Ozma faire, ending with one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, Continental Drift.

I recently went on a small spending spree and ordered six CD's online. These are all very laid back electronic etno, except for the Jaia one which is mostly trance.

Kaya Project - Elixir
Kaya Project - Walking Through
Makyo - Swara Mandala
Jaia - Blue Synergy/Blue Energy (2 discs)
V/A - Interchill - Gathering The Tribe
V/A - Dakini Records - Live At Dakini Nights (1999-2004)

I have some of these previously on my comp, but the fair price and easy form of shopping got me to forget the socialist in me for a moment.

I (re)bought GHV2: Madonna.

For some strange reason, this has got to be Madonna's best eras in general. Everyone tends to associate her with the 80's, but every album she cut in the 90's was pure magic, and most of them were the best songs she's ever done. My favourites on the album were:

Erotica= sexy, surreal, and the video has Naomi Campbell! 10/10

Bedtime Stories= the wierdest, yet one of the most entertaining, songs ever. Bjork's help paid off.

Human Nature= Best. Madge. Song. Eva.

Beautiful Stranger= beautiful melody, beautiful song; love the 60's-esque feel.

The Power of Goodbye= most of my favourite Ray of Light songs weren't included; but I love this one. It has to be her most underrated song ever.

Music= because I can shake my ass to it whenever it's playing.

$9.98 at Target woop!

(I had to break my $100 though *tear*)

I've only listened to the first seven tracks and I kind of like it, not my favorite Dashboard CD, but I'm sure it'll grow on me like they always do. I'm just in love with his voice, tis wonderful.

The last CD I bought:

http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/3615/rachmaninovjg6.jpg

Rachmaninov: Etudes-Tableaux
Performed by Howard Shelley

I had to buy this one. For me, Howard Shelley remains the performer for this piece of music, because he was the first one whom I heard perform it, and it engraved itself on my heart. For years, I searched to find this on CD, but (heh) I forgot his name, and it's not so easy searching by ear. Long story short, I found it again! Yay!

Rachmaninov's Etudes-Tableaux (Op.33 and Op.39) are absolutely gorgeous examples of composition. Also, Op. 39 contains my favorite piano composition ever: No. 5 in E-flat minor. It's so turbulent and so absolutely beautiful. And so underrated.!

I love Rachmaninov's work.

Wyclef Jean - The Carnival

This album, years back, began my foray into hip-hop a few years back when I first heard it. This is the second time I purchased CD, the previous copy was lost at my brother's college. Two of the songs, "Anything Can Happen" and "Bubblegoose," have fascinated me with their beat, lyrics, and over feel; the album itself is funky on its own and these two songs highlight Jean's creativity and humor.

Konayuki (single) by Remioromen

All three songs ("Konayuki," "No Border," and "3/9 with Quartet") are great. "Konayuki" was used in the jdorama One Liter of Tears (and I think "3/9" too...). I think my favorite is "Konayuki." It's emotional and just really all-around wonderful and it's also the song that got me into this band.

I think I'll give it 9/10

And I pre-ordered the new Killer's album, but I suppose that doesn't really count as I don't actually HAVE it yet. >_>

A total impulse buy, but something I simply had to have when I saw it.

The Charlie Brown suite & other favourites by Vince Guaraldi.

I have always loved that peanuts song, the Charlie Brown theme. Never knew what it was called or who wrote it, even. Imagine my surprise when I find out that the song is actually called 'Linus and Lucy', and the 'Charlie Brown theme' is a different song entirely. Well, the CD starts off with that instantly recognisable base riff, and continues on from there.

THe bulk of the CD (tracks 3-9) consist of a live performance recorded at a place called Mr.D's in San Fransisco that had previously been unreleased. It's a jazz quartet accompanied by orchestra. To be honest I would have liked the CD much more if it had been just the jazz quartet, but the CD as a whole is still really good. It's a lot of fun to listen and bop to.

Personal favourites are Linus and Lucy, and track 5 'Peppermint Patty'. Another good thing to come out of this disc is I now have a name to look out for when buying jazz CDs.

Jewel's latest album Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. I am only too thankful that she went back to her roots to make this song. Her previous album before this was appaling because it sold out (as in it followed the trends, made itself more "sexier" to please the lowest common denominator). This is Jewel music at her best!

Last CD Purchased: Panic! At The Disco; A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
I enjoy their songs, and I was a fan before they were famous. I just never had the money to actually buy the CD until recently

Favorite Track[s] I really like Camisado, Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off, I constantly thank God for Esteban, and Build God, then we'll talk
The beats are really easy to get into, and the lyrics are just unbelievably awesome.

Least Favorite Track: None. Up until recently, I would have said I wasn't too fond of the track Time to dance, but after listening to it more, I've grown to like it just as much as the rest of the CD.

I'm somewhat sad to think that the bassist has been replaced, but I'm sure Jon will do just a good of a job as Brent did.

I really want to get into Jewel again, and I was happy that her pop thing was something she quickly realized as a mistake, but even her new song just sounds so contrived to me. Whatever she had with Pieces of You, she seems to have lost. Maybe she should move back into her van.

Anyway, the last thing I bought was a pleasant surprise I discovered by randomly picking up a CD at FYE and sampling it at the listening station. It was Influence of Geography by The Southland; kinda of a slightly more urban Death Cab for Cutie. I love it.

Ah, life is at it best jamming to a new CD.

I purchased The Rentals's first album, Return of the Rentals, circa 1995. For those who aren't in the knowledge, The Rentals were formed by former Weezer bassist, Matt Sharp. Weezer drummer Pat Wilson drums on this album, matter of factly.

The Rentals, basically during this album had a very alternative sound, but with a twist. They had both a boy/girl equal parts singing, and a whole lotta moog synthesizers. Ah, moogs, rock. So basically it sounds like new-wave. Obviously they drew their inspirations from the 80's, and synth-rock bands like The Killers and The Bravery definetly owe something to The Rentals.

I love the album, it's 10 sweet songs, all quite poppy and cheery, but all really nice. Favs include the single, Friends of P, The Love I'm searching for and Naive. Least favs, well hard to choose, but I guess These Days is the only one I can't repeat on and on and on.
I'm looking for their second album and looking forward for their 3rd album, as after a long 7 year hiatus Sharp reformed the band with some different members and it looks like it's gonna be awesome.

Though I actually bought it two months ago, Fullmetal Alchemist: Complete Best was the last CD that I've bought. I totally love it, though it only contains the full version of all four openings and all four endings (Which clocks in at about 35 minutes). The bonus was that it also included a DVD of the music video for "Indelible Sin". A good buy overall.

Musaks.

The Smiths - Best...1. Like so many of my purchased, it's a collection, simply because it's easier to buy CDs full of songs I like by defunct bands than buy their whole catalouge. Anyways, I love The Smiths. Morrissey has to be one of the best lyricists of all time. His words are just sarcastic yet smart. He's a bit outspoken, but that doesn't affect the tunes from being obnoxious or anything. Personal fav. songs are William, It Was Really Nothing, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, Sheila Take a Bow and Panic.

The Decemberists - "Picaresque". I heard of the Decemberists a few times before, but really got me is when on the internet I stumbled across the video for 16 Military Wives and thought it was hilarious, and to really good tune. So I found the album and decided to buy it. I found it to be a fairly great CD. Some tunes kinda drag though...just seem too long. Great find, worthy buy though.

And one more...

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation, the best of. Another best of. But Pixies have to be one of the most influential band of the 80's/90's. All alternative rock spawned from them in one way another. Grunge bands, Britpop bands, all give the them credit. And for good reason. These guys really rocked. Fav tunes, which I can't stop playing are as follows: Gigantic, Caribou, Bone Machine, Debaser and Where is my mind?.

Till next time...

SADS - Greatest Hits of the Last 5 Years. Altogether, it was kind of a disappointment. So far there are only three songs that I'll listen to regularly off the whole thing. "Masquerade" remains the best song I've heard from them.

Kiyoharu - Poetry. A huge disappointment. I bought it for "Emily", but the version on the album is a different version from the one I like, and an inferior one at that. The other songs on the album lack interesting hooks, and I haven't been able to listen to one song all the way through. Next time, I'll just buy the bloody single.

Okay it hasn't been too long but I can hardly contain myself once again!

A few days ago I received in the mail Blur's last effort, Think Thank. It's an important album in the band's career, because of the departure of guitarist Graham Coxon during the making of this album. Coxon had always been behind the musical direction behind the band, but during some disputes and changes in taste he left. He contributed to the last song on the album, however, called Battery in your Leg. It's easily the best track on the albu, because it's a beautiful song and wonderful closure to the album and his legacy within Blur. The rest of the album is pretty amazing for the most part to. While without Graham there's a lack of big-time guitar play, instead there's brodding electronic sounds, akin to frontman Damon Albarn's side project The Gorillaz. Usually I'd list some favortie tunes, but to do that I'd list the entire album. I can't say there isn't a track I don't love. It's just that awesome. I'd go into details about songs but I'm fairly sure everyone's stopped reading by the second sentence.

I'd have to disagree with DH, much to his chargin. I rather like Sam's Town. I mean, it's no Hot Fuss and I actually prefer The Killers to be in drag and all Bowie/ambiguity obsessed, but Sam's Town isn't bad. It's not "the best album in the past 20 years" as frontman Brandon Flowers claims it would be.

They definetly took a U2 or Springsteen sound...and I'm not found of those two, so I'd say this album is better than them, but hey, that's only my opinion.

The first half of the album plays out much better than the second, but that was my opinion on Hot Fuss too. Great tracks include, Sam's Town(arguably the best track on the album), Read My Mind, and For Reasons Unknown. I'm sure you've all heard When You Were Young and I still think that's a good song too.

Just umm, please, Killers, put the make-up back on and go back to praising New Order and David Bowie.

Final Verdict: 7.5 out of 10

Evanescence - The Open Door: I must say that I am highly disappointed with this particular album. Seeing as Amy Lee has so much potential, I surely thought she would put it to good use. This album is basically made up of slow songs that aren't even half good. "Fallen" and "Anywhere But Home" (the live version of "Fallen") were both wonderful and I took a great liking to each and every wonderful track on them. "The Open Door" on the other hand; Hell, I only took a liking to two of the tracks! "Call Me When You're Sober", because I can relate to it so much do to my current situation, and "Weight of the World", simply just because. Disappointed is my main feeling towards Evanescence at the moment.:migrane:

I saw this band playing in some club while on my last weekend trip to Austin. They had such amazing energy and the lead singer/guitarist blew me away with his performance. The band itself is more... lol wow i didnt think i remembered my username from like a million years ago. so, sweet i dont have to make a new one.

and uhhh as for me, I just bought Dog Problems by The Format and Return to Cookie Mountain by Tv on the Radio. i still need to get me that Tom Waits box set thangy thang (Orphans, somethin somethin...) and so far:

Dog Problems = beautifully written, poppy rock. i get hints of The Beatles and Teh Beach Boys every now and then. woot, The Format is a great band.

Return = audiogasm? soooo many layers to each song, lyrics that are nothing short of poetry, and weird noises and beats to get the mind going.

on my list of things to get are:

Radiohead - OK Computer (wanted it for a while now...)
Tom Waits - Orphans...
and the new Streetlight Manifesto album that's gonna come out never.

First of all, when I heard the 30-second samples of the songs that circulated on the net a while before my purchase, I was disappointed. But when I listened to the entire thing, it suddenly grew a little on me. A great deal of the songs ("Breakin' Up", "4 In The Morning", "U Started It") are going to take getting used to, but for the most part, I adore this album. Not as good as LAMB, but not as bad as half the albums out these days.

Double dosage of Pulp. First up is Hits. Which is obviously, a best of. From all their 90's to 2002 works, it's a great compilation. I only wish they mixed it up, track wise, instead of putting it in order of release. It's kinda flat that way. I like a lot of their early 90's stuff, which was influenced by the cure and david bowie best. Great stuff.

Secondly, I got their 2002 album, We Love Life. It's a really mellow album, has some great tracks, and then some not so great ones. Two of the songs I love, Bad Cover Version and The Trees are also on the Hits record. Weeds and Weeds II(origin of the species) are also really nice ones. Not a record for people looking for the band's typical dance-synth pop though, but for those who dig a mellow rock album, this is a great pick up.

"Meet me in the city" by Junior Kimbrough.

Junior was an amazing blues guitarist and the main influence behind my favourite band The Black Keys. The Black Keys also recently did an EP (Chulahoma) of Junior songs, which is how I found out about him. The title track and the raw, gravelly sound is nothing short of amazing.

I recently went on a spree...

The best of Yellowjackets
I had heard a Yellowjackets song on a jazz compilation album years ago, and I really liked what I had heard. I've kept an eye for Yellowjackets CD's ever since, but apart from the time when I found one but had no money, I hadn't seen one. I found this, and thought it to be a good place to start.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed. I'm not a big fan of synth, and Yellowjackets use synth in spades. There where a couple tracks I liked, Sprirt of the West, Summer Song, and the Theme from Il Postino.

The Very Best of Liszt
I'm a Liszt fanboy. Though I wasn't too keen on his funerailles, and not being a fan of opera mean't the Final Chorus from the Faust Symphony wasn't my cup of tea, the rest was brilliant, as always.

Beethoven String Quartets Op.18, Nos. 5 & 6
I like string quartets, but I've not really listened to any in detail, so I picked up this CD (partly to make up for a lack of Beethoven in my growing collection), and I like it. Can't really comment of particular tracks, as even though the particular movements can be seperated and played independantly, they all flow together so nicely as a complete piece.

Play Along Jazz vol.57 Vince Guaraldi
I got this CD with a music book I bought, so it is in essence a teaching aid rather than a listening CD, but it has some nice music on it. The book really should have mentioned Charlie Brown somewhere, as all the pieces in it are Charlie Brown songs. It's all Guaraldi goodness, with favourites being Linus and Lucy, Oh, Good Grief and Skating.

Jazz meets Hymns
Saw this in the bookshop I volunteer at, it looked interesting so I bought it. An interesting CD, some of the pieces are nicely interpreted. Some, if you didn't know that you were listening to hymns don't sound much like their original counterparts. A good half of this disc is going on my favourites list.

The Bach Book ~40th Anniversary Album~ by The Jacques Loussier Trio

I actually picked this up on more of a hunch than any real knowledge of what was in it. I first heard this style on a little BBC tv show called Handmade, where they would play this style of music whilst a craftsperson makes something, like a cricket bat or blown glass marbles or other cool crafty things like that. But I never did quite catch the name of the band, I'm not too sure if this is the one or not.

But anyways, I honestly love this stuff, so much so that I cannot choose a favourite track. It's a melding of my 2 favourite genres, Classical and Jazz, and listening to the guy that started it all is a real treat. This band is going alongside Guaraldi as one of my 'artists to look out for',

I got these last week, and haven't had time to listen in detail yet, but I've been collecting CDs from various composers so I have a resource to fall back, when deciding what pieces to learn when I go back to lessons. Also, being one that learns primarily by ear, it is useful for me to have a recording handy so I can hear what it's supposed to sound like.

The Well Tempered Klavier, selections from books 1 & 2 by J.S. Bach
I like Bach's piano work. I usually find other types of work from this period to be somewhat....frilly, they don't quite suit my tastes, but I am finding klavier music to be an exception.

Chopin Piano Music vol.7
I only noticed that it was volume 7 when looing at the title to write this post. Oh well. I've been drawn to Chopin after rediscovering various composer because he wrote primarily for piano, which is my main instrument. I am liking what I am hearing.

Great Pianist: Horowitz
This CD I bought because it had pieces from a variety of composers, not just Bach, Chopin and Liszt. I needed to get some exposure to other composers so I can expand on my rep....repar..crap, I had that word in my head just a few seconds ago. The pianist himself, well, I like perfomers of the ilk of Gyögy Cziffra and Jenő Jandó better, but that's not why I bought the CD. I did like Flight of the Bumblebee, though.

Me again. This time bringing you Sonic Youth's 2006 album, "Rather Ripped". I picked this up after falling in love with the song Incinerate. I heard it on the radio and downloaded it before finally deciding to buy the full CD. And I'm glad I did. It's fantastic, pure alternative/fuzzy guitar joy that only Sonic Youth can bring. As stated Incinerate is my favorite track. Other greats include the haunting but beautiful songs Do You Believe in Rapture? and Lights Out. It's a really great CD with no bad tunes and it flows together great.

hot damn, I love budget CDs! I got these a week or so ago, but I haven't had time to really listen to them all until recently.

Franz Liszt - Complete Piano Works vol.10
This CD caught my eye simply because it had the Liebestraume on it. Not just the more well known No.3 Notturno, but all of it. Don't see that all that often.

Bartók - Mikrokosmos (selections), 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs, 6 Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm
It's the second lot of features that I bought it for. I like traditional Hungarian music, and I was interested to see how Bartók translated them to piano. I have heard some of his string compositions before, and I found them a bit strange. But this, I like. Unlike Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies, which are more interpretations of traditional Hungarian and Gypsy music, these seem to be more literal translations.

The Encyclopedia of Music: The Best of Classical
A 3 CD compilation set for $9? Sure thing! This is a collection of some of the most well known pieces, ones that have been used in many movies and those that you say 'I've heard that before!'. Things like the William Tell Overture, The Beautiful Blue Danube, Air on a G String (I still laugh at that very base joke about changing G Strings in public......)

The Encyclopedia of Music: The Best of Jazz
Same vein as the above. I bought this because, though I like Jazz unlike classical I really don't know were to start. All I know it Loussier (which is Bach) and Guaraldi (which is hard to find), so I thought a nice cheap compilation set would help. It's mainly quartets with a few big band pieces thrown in. I like it.

It's been so long since I've actually bought some CDs, and I'm going to be buying a string of them at that!

As expressed in the song thread, I've been listening to lots of Mari Iijima, but I've bought two of her CDs a few days ago, which were remastered editions of her late-80s albums. I also plan to buy the remasters of her first four albums which were released at the end of last month, alongside her new album Uncompromising Innocence.

Coquettish Blue (1987) - A great album that mixes Mari's lighter touches and her catchier side without feeling uneven. The opening track "I Feel Blue" is pretty soothing to listen to on a quiet day thanks to the keyboard line, while tracks like "Crime" and "People! People! People!" are catchy listens that give a great perk to the softer sounds that compliment the album.

Miss Lemon (1988) - For only being released a year after Coquettish Blue, the sound is more refined and memorable this time around, complete with great hooks and nice instrumentation. The opening track "Glass Darling" grabs you into the album with a Mari that's more confident in her delivery and a backing band that adds great soul into the overall performance, enhancing the somber mood the song brings out with a rich saxaphone and melodic keyboard line. Though there's catchy gems abound like "I Wanna Marry You" and "Scent of September Rain" that bring the album out further, it's the unique track "Tsumetai Sora" that contains a great sounding guitar and Mari putting a little spirit into her vocals to add a nice soft rock touch. One of her best albums easily.

Me, myself, and I waltzed down to the closest music store and purchased We Are Glitter, Goldfrapp's remix album. I've bought a few CDs over the past couple of weeks and again, HUZZAH for budget discs!

Gymnopédies, A Selection of Piano Pieces by Satie
This I bought mainly because I am currently learning the Gymnopédies, and I wanted a complete recording, rather than just the No.1 that was on the Encyclopedia of Music CD. Having the Gnoissiennes on there was a bonus. The rest of the pieces are odd....but in a good way.

2007 Neujahrskonzert performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker, conducted by Zubin Mehta.
The Neujahrskonzert is something that I always try to remember to watch when it's televised, but always end up involved in something else and end up not seeing it. So the CD was the next best thing, and it's a damn good listen. An all Strauss affair, I'd have to say that the Erinnerungen an Ernst by Strauss I and the An der schönen, blauen Donau by Strauss II would be my favourites.

Chopin, Nocturnes (selections)
Again, a CD for reference as a couple of Chopin's Nocturnes are on my list of stuff to learn. A very nice CD.

Hungarian Festival
I was hooked by the 'Hungarian' bit. A compilation CD of various Hungarian composers from Liszt to Kodaly. The titles seem to be more confusing, attributing some songs to some composers that I thought belonged elsewhere, but the CD isn't bad.

Beethoven, The Nine Symphonies
I haven't actually listened to this one yet but hell, all nine symphonies in a decorative tin for $12? yes please!

Beethoven, Violin Sonatas, Op.12 Nos. 1-3
Been on a bit of a Beethoven kick lately. I haven't heard one of his Violin Sonatas (apart from bits of the No.5 on nodame Cantabile), and the violin is another instrument I would like to learn in addition to the piano so I thought the Violin Sonatas would be something I would like. I was not wrong.

Chill with Beethoven
A CD with some of Beethoven's more well known reflective, romantic pieces on it. I bought this mainly for the Für Elise, another piece I am currently learning. It was surprisingly difficult to find a CD with Für Elise on it. It's got some other neat songs as well, like a movement from the Violin Sonata No.5 and the Piano Sonata No.8 Pathétique..

Vince Guaraldi Trio
Finally, something that is not Peanuts. As much as I like the Peanuts music, there is more to Guaraldi than Peanuts. This is classic easy listening jazz, perfect for putting on in the background whilst doing other stuff.

Impressions on Chopin's Nocturnes by Jacque Loussieer
Just Loussier on piano, improvising around Chopin. AN interesting CD, maybe a bit too long, though.

Well, I just picked up three more Mari Iijima albums, this time from her independent label, Marimusic.

Silent Love - More of an electronic pop album this time around, but more laid back than catchy if anything. The album opens with "Lucid Dreams" and continues with the same low-key electronic compositions throughout, letting the latter half of the album bring out some driving numbers like "Survivor" and "Is This Love." Also,"I'm Always With You" is a rather anime-inspired piece I enjoyed, probably the catchiest song on the album.

Gems - A compilation bringing together her first two independent albums, No Limit and Right Now. Mari chooses the best representations from those albums and puts together a nice pop compilation that doesn't try to alienate the listener in any way. "Us" and "Sing For Me" were probably my favorites.

Wonderful People - This album shows her sound advancing forward, with yet more electronic compositions and a band that knows how to back her up. "Unspoken Love" is the best song on this album by far, as it seems to be stirring with an emotional sound, and the album's title track seems to compliment this change she's going through musically.

Alright. Back again. Three more to add.

The Good, The Bad & The Queen - Damon Albarn of one of my favorite bands, Blur and Gorillaz fame, brings us a new project. The band now consists of himself, Simon Tong from The Verve, Tony Allen, a famed afrobeat drummer and pioneer, and most famously, Paul Simonen of The Clash. This new album is quite different from anything else Albarn has done, with only slight simularities to Blur's last album, Think Tank, in terms of it's moody atmosphere. The album deals with songs about London life in rather depressing terms. I love the dub-bass that Simonen plays, along with very wild west sounding guitar riffs and pianos. 7.5 out of 10 cause some songs did lack.

The Arcade Fire - Neon bible. Been waiting for this one. I've only listened to it all the way through once. But i'm gonna give it some more gos when I have the time. I like the album, but so far, it just doesn't match Funeral. But from the moment i heard Black Mirror on the radio i knew it would be good, cause that song just entralls me. Keep the Car Running and No Cars Go are also really good, but like I said gotta give it another listen through. Rating pending. But probably an 8 out of 10

and then, cause it was on sale and like I said, I love Blur I bought their self titled 1997 album. I've been meaning to get it for awhile. I love songs like Beetlebum, M.O.R. and Song 2, but I've known about those songs for awhile. Some of the songs were weird or droning to me, but the good ones were excellent. I really loved You're So Great, which was done solely by guitarist Graham Coxon, and hinted towards his solo stuff which I'm looking to listen to more of soon. 8.5 out of 10 on the really good song's merits alone.

I have finally recieved the rest of the Mari Iijima albums I ordered, so this will be my last post in this thread for sometime. Bear with me!

Rose (1983) - Mari's debut album, it was produced by legendary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and features colorful electronic performances likewise. The album is solid the whole way through from the opener "Blueberry Jam" to the short closer "Odeko Ni Kiss." The most memorable songs are the pop flavored "Mari'n" and "Love Sick." Also, there's some pleasant listening to be had the album's halfway point with the slower pop number "Kitto Ieru."

Blanche (1984) - The arrangements here are more varied than her debut, which features a variety of beat-driven melodies and some spooky piano variations. Better arranged than Rose by far, the opening number "Marcy Deerfield" is a stunner with some nice percussion and keyboarding, helping signal the dreamy feel of such tracks as "Leda" and "Angel's Paint." Brilliant stuff.

Midori (1985) - My favorite album from Mari, the compositions are more emotional and grandiose than what I've felt with any of her other albums thus far. The opener "Boku No Mahou" has an orchestra backing her performance, lifting the feel of the song to something much greater aside from Mari's own arrangements. The album continues to stun with the ever melodic "Hitoribachi Ga Suki" and "Itsumo no Party" that help keep the album in a state of emotional musical triumph. It's a shame Mari would soon be away from such methods of orchestral instrumentation in her latter efforts, but the variety of instruments and the electronic compositions make this a keeper for me by far.

Kimono Stereo (1985) - After three straight solid albums, I was left disappointed with the more atypically pop-driven Kimono Stereo. The opening track "Nageki no Superstar" demonstrates great musical aim in given doses, allowing a taste of Midori's orchestral turns to pop up only briefly. But as the album continues, there's still efficient pop tracks like "Pink no Rouge" and "Cecile no amegasa" that help give the album some solid moments, making Kimono Stereo an effort that's certainly listenable, yet not among her best.

My Heart in Red (1989) - After the exellent 1988 album Miss Lemon, Mari strikes into her L.A. sound just a little further with this release as the album begins with the excellent opener "Still" and the ever catchy "Secret." Though the sounds don't quite transcend the said album before it, My Heart in Red proves to be an enjoyable listen thanks to some very memorable tracks like the excellent "GAMBARE!" and "Send Love To Me."

Uncompromising Innocence (2006) - After viewing all of her 80s albums, the new Mari still holds up nicely, even with this latest release. Like typical Mari fashion, the opening track delivers a nice introduction, and "The Most Beautiful Thing" proves an enjoyable listen alongside the darker sounding "Broken Computer." With the more modern sounding electronic compositions of those said two tracks comes Mari with her great piano work in "December" and the album's surprising knock-out closer "Forbidden Rain." Mari's newest album thankfully shows she's still got plenty of talent to spare, and is actually much more solid than her last two albums Wonderful People and Silent Love in my opinion. Other tracks to check out include "Anticipation" and "'Cause I Know."

So basically, after checking all of these cds out, I have ranked my enjoyment of them accordingly:

1. Midori
2. Blanche
3. Rose
4. Miss Lemon
5. Gems
6. Uncompromising Innocence
7. My Heart In Red
8. Kimono Stereo
9. Wonderful People
10. Coquettish Blue
11. Silent Love

Note: My enjoyment was based on how solid each album was, some tracks on lesser appreciated albums may still be larger favorites of mine.

I've also made sure to make my song highlights from each album visible to show which ones I've enjoyed a great deal. Hopefully you guys enjoyed my posts! :D

A few more budget classical discs:

Etudes, Gnomenreigen, Waldesrauschen, Etudes de concert by Liszt
Building up my Liszt piano collection.

The Best of Grieg
I've always liked Grieg's works, like the Piano Concerto in A minor and In the Halls of the Mountain King. THis CD was bought to experience some of his other works, even though the disc does have those pieces on it.

Romantic Piano Favourites vol.3
I got this mainly to diversify my piano collection outside of Liszt and Chopin, but what really sold this is the March of the Trolls by Grieg. It also has a much better sounding recording of FLight of the Bumblebee than the other disc I bought.

Elite CLASSICAL
A five disc set giving Bach, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Vivaldi and Mozart a disc each. Again, another set to diversify my collection, seeing as I don't have much of anything by Mendelssohn or Schubert. Can't say much of the title, though. last time I considered classical music to be 'elite' was when I was 10 years old.

The Shins - Wincing the Night Away- Well worth the wait for this album. I'd be willing to even say it's just as good as their first two albums. This CD has some amazing songs start to finish. If you liked their other albums, you'll love this.

Sondre Lerche - Phantom Punch- One of the best CDs I've ever had the pleasure of buying. I've loved Sondre's music for years now, but this CD takes the cake. While his previous albums had an Elvis Costello or Jazz feel to them, this one really brings out the rock from Mr. Lerche. With tracks like Phantom Punch and The Tape I almost had to remind myself that I was listening to Sondre Lerche, and not another artist. It's a breath of fresh air for his style. This CD will not be leaving my player for a very long time.

Gwarg. More Britpop to consume my soul.

First up. More and more of Blur. This time 1995's Great Escape. Overall, I liked 97's self titled album more, cause I dig it's lo-fi and off beat tracks. But this album was released at the height of Britpop. So it is, yes, very poppy. But I think it has some of the band's best ballads. Yuko & Hiro, Better Days and The Universal are absolutely beautiful tracks. It also has a few rockers that are nice. 7.5 out of 10

Then, we have Blur's former guitarist, Graham Coxon's latest album, Love Travels at Illegal Speeds. Graham's probably one of the best guitarists of the 90's and now, and this album proves it. Every song is just jam packed with great riffs and solos. It's great for those who dig upbeat guitar pop or even pop punk. Some tracks seem kinda repetitive, but for the most part it's one catchy rocker after the other. 7.5 out of 10

Now, I'm gonna go CD hunting for some Gang of Four. Till then...

I just got the Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion CD. Best waste of my money. :]

I especially like the song Big Girl (You Are Beautiful). Makes me feel a little bit better about myself, and it's got a catchy beat to boot. Grace Kelly is of course wonderful, and Lollipop gave me a fit of the giggles.

Good times. <3

Tori Amos' American Doll Posse. A hundred million times better than The Beekeeper. I positively love every song and how each is from a specific character. My favourite, possibly, would be Santa. I'm so in love with You Can Bring Your Dog, but every song is candy to my ears.

[get it Trem! I want to hear your opinion]

It's been a while and few CDs since I last posted here.

Debussy, Piano Works
This I bought sole for the Suite Bergamasque. I wanted the entire suite, rather than the more famous 3rd movement, the Clair de Lune. It also has the Golliwogs Cake-Walk on it, another favourite of mine which was a bonus.

Beethoven, Favourite Vioin Sonatas
Another CD to fill my lack of Beethoven. It's got the Spring sonata on there, which I had heard bits of in an earlier episode of Nodame Cantabile.

Mozart: Cosi Fan Tutte (highlights)
This I got simply because it was mentioned in Nodame Cantabile, and I wanted to hear what it sounds like. I can say I've never really been into opera, so I've not listened to much. Some tunes have resonated with me (like the Flower Duet from Lakme), but after hearing these highlights, I might look into some more. I'd like to see this live.

Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 20 & 21
A complete impulse buy, it was on sale! Might as well get some Mozart while it's cheap. They're pretty good concerto's as well.

Liszt: Piano Concertos nos. 1 & 2, Hungarian Fantasy, Totentanz
Another impulse buy. Intersting listening to the Hungarian Fantasy, how he's orchestrated some of his Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano into a single concert piece.

Great Pianists: Schnabel, Beethoven Piano Works Vol. 8
Consisting of the Piano Sonata's 27, 28 and 29 (the Hammerklavier), this CD was the result of me mixing up my numbers. I will be learning the Piano Sonata No. 13 Opus 27 in the near future, so I thought I'd look for a recording of it, seeing as I've never heard it before.

Hellogoodbye - "Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!"

I love the CD. It's got the cutest, sweetest lyrics and I like the mix of like electro-pop with some punk and acoustic. Wonderful, wonderful CD.

:thewave:

I should go out and get their other one...

I picked up Public Warning by Lady Sovereign.

The album makes some pretty sick party music, even if you are alone. It just has a fun, catchy hilarity to it all and it works in putting you in a good mood. I really like her style, her mix of genre, hip hop and dance and grime. It's all good. +

Alright kiddies. Time for another CD review you probably don't care about, courtesy of yours truely, the Laki of the Dash.

Anyways, two now, two to come when they arrive in the mail.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night OST. Wanted this forever, finally got my grubby paws on it. As anyone who's played SotN knows, the music is beautiful and enchanting. I strongly suggest playing that fantastic game, and somehow hearing the music if you can't, even if it's in a MIDI. It's the best game music ever composed. Final Fantsy what? Zelda who? Tracks like Requiem for the Gods, Dance of Gold, Dance of Pales are beautiful but also haunting, Crystal Teardrops is a fantastic and interesting jazz/goth fusion. And of course, standard rock out Castlevania tunes like Tragic Prince are always awesome. 10/10. Best. Game. Soundtrack. Ever.

had enough? Tough.
New Order Substance is next. I love, love, LOVE Joy Division(which was the band before New Order was formed, btw). But I never really heard much of NO outside of Blue Monday. But I really wanted to get into them. So on line I listneed to tracks like Temptation andCeremony(originally a JD song anyways). And decided I liked them and some other tunes enough to warrent CD buying. Now it's two discs and I've only had the time to fully listen to Disc 1. But I'm not dissapointed. The 80's dance scene must have been great to have stuff like this spinning constantly. I just love so many of the tracks. Excluding the already mentioned, Thieves Like Us, Bizarre Love Triangle and State of the Nation stick out. So far, for disc 1 alone, 9.0 out of 10

As sad as it is, over Memorial Weekend I bought Sailor Moon Soundtrack: Lunarock and I'm oh so happy. :] I finally have the cute song Daddy's Girl and The Power of Love to jam out to on the bus ride home from class/work/whatever.

...I'm so lame. <3.14

^Totally not! I want that CD!! :'[

Okay, I bought my third copy of Love.Angel.Music.Baby, but only because Crash and Harajuku Girls were skipping on my second disc (the first disc has been played so much, I think I destroyed it)!! Yeah. I know. I'm nuts. But I couldn't get all SUPA LOVERZ TELL ME WHERE YOU GOT URS. That's how I start my mornings.

"Manipulator" - The Fall of Troy

<333 x a billion.

I love TFOT. In my opinion Doppleganger is a lot better but Manipulator grows on you so much, its awesome. I love it to death. The different singing style and guitar riffs make for an interesting switch in direction but I think it'll take them places. Plus the CD graphics are totally bomb.

Than again, I love The Fall Of Troy to death (I'm seeing them on the seventeenth with diru! XD woot!)

The Delgados- Hate

After hearing "The Light Before we Land" in the Best OP thread I made, I had to check out more. I did so and loved it, ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom, bought the album.

It's a real shame these guys never got the attention they deserved because this is a pretty amazing album. It's epic and grim but ethereal at the same time. Well worth a listen.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

This album has staying power. It's one of the best out of the 80's, the best in Alternative music. Hell, it's one of the best albums ever recorded. period. This is Sonic Youth at their peak. I really can't say too much, if anything, bad about this record. It comes alive from track one, Teenage Riot and does not stop till the 14 minute, 3 part Trilogy ends, and even then, you can always leave the record on repeat. SY's familiar feedback and squealing guitars tuned with screwdrivers, bombastic drumming, powerful lyrics sung by either Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon or Lee Renaldo. It's got them all and then some. It's a classic that belongs in any alternative rock/indie, or any rock fan's collection.

Usually I can nitpick something, but for now, I truely can't. 10 out of 10. No joke.

"Bone Palace Ballet" - Chiodos

I'm not as impressed with this one as I was with their previous, All's Well That End's Well, but it's still an enjoyable CD. With Craig Owens voice shining through and fun lyrics, heavy guitars and drums it is a very fun...almost "epic" CD to listen to.

"On Letting Go" - Circa Survive

I really like chilling out to Circa. They make me very relaxed and focused (not good for night driving however.) Only two songs really stick out to me as favorites on this CD, where as they had more that I enjoyed and view as favorites off Juturna. It's still a very good Circa CD though, full of melodic singing and light guitar riffs. I love this CD.

RENT (The Movie) Soundtrack - Sheer brilliance. I'm glad they turned the musical into a movie, making it easier for me to see. :) Shame they removed some parts out of La Vie Boheme that I loved (the chatter between Maureen and Joanne), but I still find the soundtrack wonderful, especially since most of the them are the original broadway actors. :]

Reliant K: Five Score and Seven Years Ago
I bought this after I finally found "MmmHmm", and for the most part, it's just not as good. Sure, a few of the songs are catchy and have some great lyrics ("Forgiven", "Must've Done Something Right", and "Bite my Lip" are three that come to mind), but a good amount of the others are rather forgettable. Overall, the CD is good, perhaps a 7.3 out of 10, but it's nothing to rush out and get.

Oh..."Crayons can Melt on us for all I Care" = Total Win

And I am absolutely addicted to the song Green finch and Linnett Bird.
Jayne Wisener does an excellent rendition, I think. <3

I agree, but no Daphne = :(

My last CD was Blessed by the Soweto Gospel Choir -- it's a really fantastic 26-voice ensemble from South Africa. They do a wonderful job blending American gospel with South African folk music, so if you're into the whole ethnomusicological scene and you want something that is guaranteed to make you smile and lift your spirits, I highly recommend it.

On today's menu we have a heaping hot serving of the soundtrack to the movie Juno. I saw the movie basically going on the fact that 1. It had Jason Bateman and Michael Cera(of Arrested Developement) in it and 2. I heard the Mott the Hoople song, All the Young Dudes(one of my favs) in a commerical. Lucky me it was not just in the commerical, but also the movie and the soundtack. But as I was wathcing the movie(which was amazing by the way) I heard the tunes and knew I had to pick up the soundtrack as soon as I could. With some of my all time favorite artists like Sonic Youth, The Velvet Underground and The Kinks in it, it couldn't get any better.

But the soundtrack is dominated by the works of anti-folk artist Kimya Dawson(and a few of her projects). All the songs done by her are wonderful, and sound like she was just in her pad with a guitar and recording it. It's very personal and playful as well. I love it all.

See the movie, buy the soundtrack. Be merry. End.

My last CD purchase? It was none other than Combichrist, specifically their album "Sex, Drugs, and Industrial". Combichrist is a hardcore industrial techno group composed of two people, and their music is awesome. Noteworthy tracks they've made that are not on this album are "Get your Body Beat" and "This is my Rifle". On this album, their best tracks are probably the two remixes of the song "Sex, Drugs, and Industrial", as it were.

I am considering buying some anime soundtracks. Maybe I'll buy the Evangelion and Gundam tracks, along with some Tokyo Mew Mew for something different? Oh, and I'm probably going to go for the Hellsing soundtrack (of course!).
