After a hectic week, the perfect way to finish it off is with an anime convention.

AVCon 2006 was held last weekend (15-16 July) at the University of Adelaide, and I feel it is my duty to report. I did take pictures, but since I couldn't find the digital, I had to break out the old SLR and buy some film. They are currently being developed.

On the Saturday I hooked up with a couple of friends of mine, Lankey and Ali and we caught the train into the city, arriving a little late. The theme this year was Pirates vs Ninjas, and since I didn't have the courage to go full cosplay, I bought a piratey hat and wore that around. Ali had more of a costume, and Lankey had none.

We joined the line at about 10:30, before discovering that the long line we joined was not the preregistration line, which was further down and much shorter. However, because they had to find out name badges, the other line actually finished before we did.......

First things first, to the Dealer rooms! Nothing better than spending money. There were a number of vendors, each offering a good selection of Manga, artbooks, DVDs toys plushies and other assorted bits and bobs. I snapped up a number of manga volumes from various series I've been collecting, and a few new ones when I saw they were running a bulk special (yay, I now have 4 volumes of BECK!), and a couple of CDs. Ali found a clear case gameboy for $9 (he later found that it didn't work), and I ran into ShinoMatrix. We then headed down the the chillout room to sit down and actually get our bearings and figure out what we going to do.

First on the list was Ouran High School Host Club. A couple of episodes were showing, so I strongly suggested that we go see it. We had missed the first episode, but they enjoyed the second, even if they didn't quite get what was going on. Off to get some lunch, and back just in time for the One Piece Movie.

We ran into some of Lankey's friends, and we all watched One Piece. Not a bad film. Ali had to leave at that point, and the rest of us trundled down to watch the Pirates vs Ninja's game show. That was quite amusing, as the well planned show seemed to fall apart at the seams, with questiosn going missing and such, wrong answers from the judges (Starboard is the left side? Yarr, somebody needs to walk the plank!). Still, with the shoe going overtime I left Lankey and his friends behind to to go take a seat at the Madman panel.

I walked in on the art panel. It seemed everything was running behind schedule that afternoon. Still, I like art, so I sat in and learned some intersting things about using photoshop, CS2 and mixed media. No doubt I'll have forgotten them by the time I actually get to put them into practice. As the art panel was finishing up, Lankey (minus friends, they went home to play WoW or something) joined me for the Madman panel.

Madman, Australia's main anime distrobutor. I like sitting on these panels, I get to hear what's coming out, or even something that is in the works but not ready for an 'official' announcement. This time around we had Speed Grapher, Baki the Grapppler and some others, but what I was really interested in was the retro stuff. This year they are comign out with Mask and Ulyesses 31, 2 shows I grew up with and loved. They also said they have a special surprise title as well, but they weren't giving anything away. I guessing it's probably Samurai Pizza Cats or old skool Ninja Turtles. Lankey reckons it's going to be Inspector Gadget.

They also announced that this year, being they 10 year anniversary, they will be re-releasing Bubblegum Crisis on DVD, the first title they ever released, complete with 80's music and all. Then came question time, and there were various questions about obscure Toei titles, certain Godzilla films out th roughly half million made, and I found out that Yukikaze will finally be finished in November.

With that, we decided to call it a day. We were tossing up the idea of staying for the quiz night, but we didn't have the numbers to make a team.

(I'll put in Sunday later, as I have to get back to work now)

Thanks for the report! I always like hearing about what Madman is up to. One question though, did they say anything about the theme song to Speed Grapher? Apparently in the US they couldn't get the rights to 'Girls on Film', how did it go for Australia?

Also, good choice with Ouran and the Beck manga. Both are awesome. :D

I bought a piratey hat and wore that around.

Did you tell them Haruhi was a girl? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/Twotwenty/v.gif

Is this just wild speculation? Because these three cartoons were the pillars of my childhood, so c*ck-teasing with them makes Two-twenty-hulk-smash-angry!

Lightning response!

Unfortunately for us, we don't get the song either. Bummer. He mentioned something about spending 2 years getting rights just for Japan.

Unfortunately I had to otherwise they wouldn't have understood. I think they will be.....aquiring it from me anyways.

This is just speculation at this point. The Inspector Gadget thing was just passed onto me, I did not take part in that discussion. The only 2 clues they gave were that people have been asking for it, and that they already have released a similar series. I know that the new Turtles cartoon is out, but I'm not too sure who's releasing that.

Now, onto Sunday's adventures. This wouls have gone up yesterday evening, but AA decided to not let me connect for some reason.

Today we were joined by 2 ladies, Sar and Leia, who had come in pirate cosplay (and garnering us more weird looks than usual....). We caught an earlier train in order to catch the Madman premiere of Eureka 7, as us guys (that being Lankey, Ali and myself) were interested, but not entirely sure if it was worth the investment. Of course Ali then told us he had to get money, which was a bit of a walk in the opposite direction.

After missing the first episode of Eureka 7, we sat on the rest of the session, which was ep.2 & 3. We all found it rather interesting, so it's probably something we'll be buying.

When that was over, Lankey said 'lets go watch the second Naruto movie!'. Everyone looked at him and said 'no'. So it was off to the dealers room again to spend some more cash. I was hoping to pick up a Moonphase vol.3, as they had run out on Saturday before I snagged a copy, but it was not to be. Even though this was day 2, there was still a good selection of stuff to be had. I walked away with a Macross Zero VF-0A/S model kit, and after some umming and ahhing, I decided to put Infinate Ryvius, a Gankutsuou and Madlax box on my card. Sar and Leia walked away with assorted FF7 advent children toys.

Off to the Chillout room to think about what to do next. We were met there by Sar's sister, Pretzel, and we decided to check out the sumo suits. those things are interesting to watch, and some clowns know how to get the best funny value out of being fat all of a sudden. There was one short bloke who could tuck his head into the suit.....it was like a fleshy turtle. Sar wanted a go, and eventually got into a suit. She got beat, but the guy was up against was very cautious....can't just go putting those hands anywhere. With that it was off to lunch. Ali had to leave early again (sucks to be working on the weekend).

We came back with the intention of securing a seat for the cosplay contest, but the line was already out the door and across the courtyard. I think the live stream room was also full, as we were turned away. There was some mention of another stream, so we sat in the theatre that we thought it was going to be in. This theatre wasn't it, so we sat through an episode of Saiunkoku Monog.....I don't remember the rest of it, and the program couldn't fit all of the title in. It was a period piece, and I was rather intrigued about it. I think Lankey was bored by it, though, so he went to find this streaming room.

It turned out to be in the foyer of the main hall, so we trundled over to check it out. A lot of the costumes were not all that memorable, but there was a pretty good Chrno Crusade one there, the black and white ninjas were amusing, but perhaps the most impressive was the guy who made himself a Freedom Impulse Gundam suit. Or one of the Gundams, it was very flashy, had trouble getting up the stairs, though. Plenty of Final Fantasy stuff (and finally, someone who actually looked good in a Yuna costume!)

Anyways, by this time, the girls were getting tired, and we had no money left for the AVCon Auction, so we called it a day. All in all, this was a fantastic weekend. I took a few photos, I'll put them up when I have them developed and scanned (assuming that my photography skillz haven't diminished over time).

Oh, and Apologies to Shino. I was intending to PM you and, I don't know, get a drink or something, but it never happened. Maybe next time.

* ShinoMatrix takes a deep sigh...

Yeah dude, a drink would have been good... seeing as how I was probably dehydrated most of the weekend... fun experiences of being tagged with a dozen or so Melbourne cosplayers :p And actually, I gotta say sorry too if you had the impression I was ignoring you... oddly enough, even though I wasn't organising this event, I was actually always on some destination when I passed you by :XD:

Anyway my report...

:ninja:

NINJA'S WON!!!!!!

Yeah, that's right... damn pirates :lopoint:

Our group came in at 4th place in the Trivia Night on Saturday evening... our team composed of many of the Manifest groups (we actually had to be divided into two because we couldn't all be fitted on the one group), but wouldn't you know it, the Wai-con group was the one that actually won the competition... err... what do they have in the waters in WA?

There were some good number of traders there and I got quite a decent haul, however, I was disappointed but kind of expecting that there weren't any Ouran High School Host Cloub or Suzumiya merchandize there yet... which meant that in the end I wasn't completely broke by the end of the con and hopefully I could keep that money in time for Manifest this year and maybe then I could hope for those stuff to be available.

Backpacker's place was cool... so much fun staying with other interstate conventioners. The venue was good and from what they said and from what I observed, there were definitely a lot of attendees and definitely a success this year... about 1500 people probably turned up for the weekend.

AMV-wise... well, there were quite a bit of disappointment, particularly with the scheduling of it... good videos though... AMV Live was an interesting event and the venue they had it in was very good because it reminded me of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire... it's unfortunate it was understaff and hence the theatrics which should have been there was non-existant.

The after party... well, I wouldn't have thought the AVCon people would still have any energy left but it was so much fun to be with everyone there... drunk people are funny.

Don't worry about it. I failed to arrange thing's properly.....I even forgot to download a program so I could properly organise myself. It really sucks to have new carpet being put in a couple days before hand and you have to scramble around trying to empty the house.

I had totally forgotten about the AMV contest.....I did see it on the program, but something else more important or flashy must have forced it out of my mind. Pity, I was intending to go see it.
