Is it right to call this a japanese dia de los muertos? I mean it is a time where they honor and pay respects to their departed love ones right? Same thing, just different country.

What I'm plannin to do there in downtown is buy somethin for my friend down in San Luis, but I don't know whether to get her a yukata, a happi coat, or a hagaki. What should I get?

"Day of the Dead," a Mexican holiday celebrated Halloween/Nov 1st to honor the souls of departed loved ones.

Nice to see the Japanese like their dead, too, but I still prefer the Japanese cock festivals.

Is a mexican celebration where you remember your deads close ones and celebrate for life. This celebration was supposed to be about children at some point, but im not sure.
Anyway , the obon festival is buddist celebration where you commemorate your ancesters. Its kind of different because it is said that your ancesters come to visit you in spirit form, so is more about the past. El dia de los muertos is more about moving on.

Funny, im just writing a paper about the obon, thks for that page !

And I guess the obon is just another excuse for me to meet up with a japanese/filipino friend of mine from another forums. It'll make up for passin him at VGL and passin him again at Matsuri. If I got some shots of the happi coat or yukata I'm gettin, then I'll share.

Nobody wears a yukata on Obon, but you can start a new trend.

One day down, one day to go. So far I was able to see the Taiko performance. It was a buoyant, sui generis, and quaint experience and had quite the applause. I also had a chance to try out some tempura; I learned that everything tastes better when fried, especially the vegtables. Sake, however was rubbery and not really drunk enducingly intoxicating. I guess the first times are not always the best.

You wouldn't happen to remember which taiko dojo performed, would you?

I think it was the San Jose Buddhist Betsuin. My poster shows that thats the people who did it.

I hope to see Baisho-sensei at the obon next year like he was at the Hakone Gardens ealier this year.
