View Full Version : What do you name your characters?

Video games, especially RPG's, often ask you to give a name to the main character near the beginning of the game. Just wondering, what do you guys usually name them?

The "default" name? (Link, Ness)
A joke name?
A name you use over and over again? (your screen name, some badass name that you enter in every time, etc.)

I'd like to know what kinds of names AA gives to both male and female characters.

I use my game name, Danilo Milsant. Its a variation of my real name. In every game I play, thats the name of my character.

I just usually name my main character "Jet Fire", or my name (Greg). I'll tend to name other characters the names of my friends (or their screennames if they have them). I just like using my own name, since it seems more like the people in the game are communicating to me, and not the character that I'm controlling.

Of course, if I can name my organization/place in the game, I'll probably choose something stupid or funny. Like in Suikoden V, I just named my base "Disneyland Castle" and my army "The Noob Ownerers Army". It sounds kind of funny when the other characters in the game mention those things so seriously.

For RPG's and whatnot I usually use the default names, mostly out of laziness.

For Halo 2 I've used a few joke names when lanning with friends though. I find it funny when the game says "You beat down your wife," or "you were splattered by a large penis." Stupid little jokes like that. Yeah, me and my group of friends are so mature, I know.

For most games (RPGs) you have a default name on a main character. I just use it. However, if there is a game where I have to name my own charcter it would have to depend on the number of characters I can use. Example with 7th Saga you are only allowed 5. If I knew the average knight's name (Kamil), I would have used it off hand. But I stuck with whatever 4 letter word and/or name I can think off the top of my head. (Maybe the RPG stereotype name of Hiro. (Everyone is called that, Lunar 2?)) But if I were to name a profile for myself in a single campaign game of Halo, I would just use my alias for online purposes (If not enough chacaters again, I use Hybrid).

i love doing that! you were sniped by a terrorist(i use that)
an american beatdown a terrorist... kkk killed a black guy... assasinated by a slippery nipple(its just funny)

other than that i use default names like cloud, link and so on...

Well, I always have a character named Jon
you see...thats from 2nd grade...a bit of a bad habit...but in 2nd grade...in Monster Rancher I had like 8 Dinos all named Jon, Jon 2, Jon 3, etc

In most RPG's I don't rename

However in ones where in some parts you're given the option, one character ends up named Jon, for example in Disgaea I had a Ninja named Jon, in PB a mystic, and in Makai Kingdon a Swordmaster.

For a joke name...it's usually something random like Yogurt or something insulting like fatass

Oh, incidently I have a character named Naota and one named Sakura often too.

And I don't like my friends enough to name characters after them :XD:

in RPGs with default names I keep them at that but in games like Suikoden where you have to choose a name for your person I go with Tsukasa :D

Yeah, we use the "a terrorist" and "a black guy" nicknames too. One of my friends (black of course) always gets pissed when someone chooses the "a black guy" nick. It's fun to yell, "Stop the black on black hate" whenever he kills "a black guy."

I usually use my first name, Dennis; for games like Final Fantasy I name my entire party after people in my family.

Senshi
06-26-2006, 09:08 PM
Well most of the time I use "Jay", "Jae" or something starting with "J" (since my name is Jason and I have an unhealthy obsession with the letter "J")...

Otherwise I try and incorporate some sorta Japanese word, or facet of Japanese culture into the name...

like my characters name in Guild Wars is Orochi Jin, which is the mythical Japanese 8 headed dragon and the name "Jin" which is one of my favorite anime characters ever (note the ava)

but thats for RPGs... if we are talking about handles like for shooters, then I use either some sorta name I find clever or humorous or just some word I like (like senshi)

Griveton

Usually my own name, especially in sports and other realistic games (like fight night). I usually tend to make an idealized version of myself if possible (in fight night, a boxer with my style, in top spin, a player with my set of skills, etc).

For RPGs and such, sometimes I use my name, sometimes I create something. I rarely use the same created name several times, except in sequels (like in fallout 1/2).

Always the default name. If there is no default name, I'll use Robin because it's a suitable name for both sexes. And then I can pretend the main character is a girl.

tahts kinda odd. if you want it do be a girl why not name it a girl name? rather then i name that can be both?

I usually use my first name, Dennis; for games like Final Fantasy I name my entire party after people in my family.

Okay, that's just creepy, espicially in a Generic... er Final Fantasy game where there is always an obvious love interest. I just pray you don't name her after your sister, or worse, your mom. In fact, there's no good ground there.

Anyway, for games where the character has his own predefined name, I just use that. In games where it's 100% up to me I use Zushio.

Mana
06-27-2006, 12:24 AM
Video Games: If the main character is a boy, I'll give it a boy's name, normally after a male character in a different video game, or an anime I'm watching ("Naota" and "Touga" seem to be popular, especially for 5-letter limits). For a girl, I'll generally use either of my online aliases: Mana or Kirie, this also applies for non-main-character females (IE Lucca of Chrono Trigger), though I'll only do one female name in this regard. If given the option between a male character and a female character (IE - Pokemon), I'll always choose the female.

Secondary characters generally fall into the random anime/game characters pattern. One time I named all of my Golden Sun characters after the characters in Chrono Trigger, just for the hell of it. For 'villains,' I get a bit weird. I got into a habit of naming my 'rival' in Pokemon "BASTARD."

Pen and Paper RPGs, however, are a bit different. You actually are tied into the name a bit more, so I'll generally use something more creative, either a name I made up, or a rendering of a name from someone else. I'll never use the same name for a D&D character twice, because the characters are actually characters that exist in my mind; the same applies to novel characters.

Pedro The Hutt
06-27-2006, 07:55 AM
Actually, don't forget RPGs like Morrowind, Baldur's Gate, and Knights of the Old Republic, those don't have any "supposed" names. With those I always spend a great deal of time devicing a character and then researching a name that goes well with it. 'nuff said, making an RPG character, wether paper or otherwise can easily take over half an hour for me. In some cases even over an hour. <.<;;

With glorified adventure games such as Final Fantasy I do stick to the supposed names. Especially in a Zelda game it doesn't feel right if the characters refer to him anything other than Link... in my opinion at least.

Edit: As to FPS games, I practically always use Pedro The Hutt. 't is my online name after all.

For most RPG games, My main character is always "Falnax Murasa" or just "Falnax". If it's a series with a set name for the character like the Zelda series, I always go with the set name. Calling the character by any other name is ruining the experience for me.

JOJO
06-27-2006, 09:02 AM
In fighting games i just named my character with my real name since no one i know in real life would understand the real meaning of using names like JOJO, and in RPGs, i just leave the characters withe their original names.

Ritalin
06-27-2006, 09:47 AM
For some RPG games I use my real name, Jen, but that's only for a few. Otherwise the name will be a mutation of ritalin, nilatir, chesire, jen, or sometimes even something randomly typed that vaguely looks like it could be a name and then it becomes my name. :D

That's a last resort though. I'm horrible at thinking up names so it often goes down to that when something is taken (not often but it happens). -_-

RPGs - real names (or at least real looking names). Ritalin is never ever used on those, but have used nilatir and everything else.

FPS/Etc - Ritalin or other screenames, always.

Dtortot
06-27-2006, 10:38 AM
Dtortot. You can never go wrong with it and it is never used, like in multiplayer games. In part, that is why I created this username/nickname. I use it for everything internet related or gamming, so if you meet a Dtortot online, somewhere else, most probable thing, it will be me.

Oh! Kudos to Zushio for his comment.

I do that for the simple fun factor of dying in combat (Oh shit...my brother was killed by a Tonberry).

I use defaults if I can, simply so that I can know who others are referring to when they refer to them by name.

If there are no defaults, I use either "Yoda," "Lord Yoda," or a variant of. I hate doing this though; there're very few things worse than trying to immerse yourself in a world based upon medieval Europe, yet you still have Jedi masters running amuck in the game. Anachronisms = disrupted gaming experience. It's hard to avoid, though, when coming up with your own name.

For FPS's, I'll use some form of Yoda, Vivi, or my new favorite, Darth Tomato. For character profiles and the like, I do the same thing. When I first started gaming, though, I used to name them after Red or Rogue units from Star Wars (usually I'd pick unused callsigns). However, Niner took away all hope of that ever seeming original (note: Niner is a truncation of Rogue Nine, and he's probably had it a lot longer than me anyway). ;)

I don't play alot of games really but whenever I do I name the character Jeannie, Jean, Jeanine, Gean (for guys), or some other variant of my name.

(What? I like my name.)

but in RPGs i use kick ass names.

Lots of the time, I'll just throw out one of the names in my slew, Sal, Jones, Boy Jones, Juice, Boy, something like that, or I leave the default name.

However, sometimes, I get cheap laughs by naming them crude or vulgar names, Penis, Sperm, ****, Dick Juice. They can fit into the dialogue quite amusingly, "Penis is getting stronger!"

Well, it really depends on alignment, character class, personality, and a whole slew of other things. Lawful Good characters tend to get very Latin/Greek sounding first names and last names based on some aspect of the deity... Glarim Ligthbringer or something.

Evil folks tend to have names that sound evil... Gragnog the Blight or some such.

Rogues and everyday-heros tend to get somewhat common names or very obvious fake names... not mine, but Hiro Protagonist is a great name for a chaotic good rogue.

Wizards/sorcerors/psions tend to get esoteric names, drawn from asian languages (hindu a lot of times).

Fighters get tough names. Russian and German works well.

Monsters get something in their native tongue... or an appropriate Common translation. Like a Greater Doppleganger named "Pale Reflections."

And then I realized most people are talking console RPGs, in which case you all suck. There's no reason not to take the default name there, except in games like Pokemon. Why spend time thinking up good names for characters you didn't create? sheesh.

I go for Greek Mythology characters

Girls: Medea, Persephone, Atalanta, Daphne, Pandora, etc.

Boys: Prometheus, Ycarus, Kerberos, Kronos, Mephisto, etc.

Risen Hell Fire

Well whatever pops in my head is my characters name, except for zelda, one time I felt like giving him the name "Damn it" (I was bored) so when Navi said Wake up, she (or is it a he?) she says Wake up Damn it. Thats the only funny thing of I done.

Really interesting name... You know, most people (even characters in a video game) had a mother and/or father who designated the name they have. If I have a son, I think I'm gonna name him "Gragnog the Blight." Hell, boy or girl, I don't care.

Javer
07-01-2006, 10:37 PM
Default name the first game . . . Unless it sucks. Second playthrough (if I ever get around to one), it's Javer. Assuming that the protagonist is male, of course.

Niner
07-02-2006, 01:24 AM
Heh, just as a note, for RPGs, I never use Niner as a name. In fact, I almost never use Niner as a name in any of my games. It's my online moniker and that's about it. For games and suchly, I usually come up with (semi)original names for the characters if they need it and just go with the default if they don't.

hmmm, if it's a guy character i'm naming then its usually something like, Rye or some random name cause i just wanna play the game. if it's a girl i usually name it either Aubrii or Ashuri. I didn't buy the game so i can come up with cute little names for all the characters. Harvest moon for example, lots of things to name. My brother named everything on his farm a different name of genitals. yeah...it's pretty funny to watch

Girls - Sae, Mina, Minako, Nanaka, Sarah (my name), Kana, Sakura, Brittney, Natalie, Kc, Ryoko, Ichigo, Pudding, Zakuro, Mint, Lettuce

My Favs! lol ^-^

Major Tom
07-19-2006, 09:13 PM
Depends. If it's an FPS or Flight sim, it's Major Tom. If it's a WWII FPS or flight sim and I'm axis (which happens most of the time), then it's Ornagy Tom.

If we are playing RPG's there is a high possibility of male characters being named Major Tom or some variation of it, like Majorius, or Tomus. I might come up wih somehting a bit more original every now and then.

With female characters I tend to be a bit more creative, though high on my list are Adriadne, Phaedra and Erika.

It depends. On any game related to another game, like a sequel, I like to use a lot of homage names. It becomes a nice, miniature brain-teaser when you're playing something like a Final Fantasy game. All of my Aeons in FFX were named after characters from FFIV.

In the RPGs that let me name the main character and subsequently the other main characters, I will almost always give the main character my name and the others the names of my friends, people I know, or people I have known mainly because it allows me to "relate" more to the game and all the characters.
