It's been a while since I've shared anything, and even though my art skillz are sorely lacking, I was actually pretty proud of this one, especially for it being done in pen.

Here it is, scanned, and then also cleaned up a bit.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e118/LadyKirie/tairabelle1s.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e118/LadyKirie/tairabelle2s.jpg

There's also a larger (600 dpi original scan) version that can be found here:

It's a character concept for my next novel, the main character, a woman named Tairrie. Yeah, I know there are quite a few flaws in it, but I still enjoy it, since I don't do enough drawing these days, outside of D&D sessions, anyway.

In any event.... comments plz.

Great picture; I like the pigtails (as you mentioned, they need a drop of work, but only to straighten them). You don't find pigtails like those anymore. And the face looks really nice; it looks like you put a lot of effort into it.

Out of curiousity: Are the goggles for anything in specific? They seem kinda random, so I'm gonna assume they have some application in the novel you're writing.

Oh, and I feel sorry for her when she's gotta get into and out of those boots every day. For me, it's sandals, all the way. :)

yes, the goggles have a purpose :p They were actually the first thing I decided about the character. She a spelunker, exploring in a cave near her home, hoping to find a pathway to the islands that float above her world. The goggles belonged to her grandfather, whom she never met but feels a special liking for, since she images him trying to find the same thing. It's a bit of an odd story, but I'm sure the good people of the Art Forum will be hearing a lot more about it come November.

Her footwear is actually just simple Mary Jane-esque shoes, the rest are just as odd sort of loose sock. The clothes aren't what she'd choose to wear if given a choice, but she has to make do with what's availble.

I love her pigtails >>; I do know they look kind of odd, I just didn't want one lost behind her body, otherwise it wuld look weird x-o;

it's nice to see good old mary-jane's on a character these days. the knee-high socks and shoes reminded me of a cosplay costume i saw on a mag once (from a cyborg called alita i think). it's pretty good (as you said, it's in pen), and i hope to see more of her soon. she could use some shadow details though =^^= btw, is that a bell or a flashlight? i'm going with the flashlight...

I didn't do anythign with shadows or shading A) because I wanted to see it coloured (and also plan on colouring it myself), and B) I suck at shading. Lack of Depth Perception, ho! I suck at making anything look realistic... things like shading, and clothing folds, etc. They always just look fake to me, and my character tend to have very nicely-pressed clothed.

I have a few other sketches of her so far, but the one posted is ultimately the best. I do plan on sketching out some of the other characters as well (although Tairrie is, inarguably, the main character, and the only character for the majority of the novel), at least as soon as I figure out exactly what the look like.

And what she's holding is an old-style gas lantern, drawn as best as I could by memory.

I hardly think your skills are "sorely lacking". This is pretty good. You just wanna be careful with how you align the character. Literally. She is tilting awkwardly to the right. She has one lousy back. Maybe you should give her a spinal cord. Preferably in the form of a guideline ^^.

Anyway, I like her design, and I can't wait to hear more about her. ^^

My sketches tend to lean, just based on how I rest my hand while drawing >_>; It's a terrible habit, I know, and it's normally something that can be fixed with a few degree rotation on the scan. I do plan on messing around with that when I decide to do mroe with teh drawing.

And I do plan on doing more with teh drawing, when I have the time. I want to clean it up and colour it, for at least colouring practice if nothing else.

I don't think that rotating the image itself would make her look straight. If you look at her head's orientation with relation to the rest of her body, it is offset to her left. And her dress/skirt thing (I never really knew the difference anyway) is also flowing a bit to her left.

It looks like she is actually leaning against something; that's what I assumed when I first saw the picture. If she's leaning against a poll or wall or something, that justifies both the alignment of the head and the flow of her dress.

Yeah, that's why I said "normally." If it had worked well with this one, I would have done it before posting, but it wasn't turning out so well. I still wanna try rotating it a little, but I think working it in with some sort of background is a better idea. Thanks :3

Beautiful. I love the detail you put in the design. However, one of her knee's appear a tad bigger than the other. (the left) Although if that;s how you wanted it than forget what I said.

Great job! I know what you mean about your art leaning, I do the same thing when ever I draw. How often do you practice?

One's in front of the other... at least... that's how I meant it to be >>;;

I do doodle and sketches at work quite a bit, but they're normally 30 second pieces, and, well, mostly shit. Oddly enough, I do the most drawing during D&D sessions, but even that is once a week at best. Back when I was in school, I had a lot more muck time to draw and whatnot, but I really don't too much anymore, so my practice is lacking. Most of the time, the stuff I draw turns out terrible, but every once and a while I get lucky.

*points up* Yes, it's a lantern, and she's wearing Mary Janes with odd socks, not boots. Both have been mentioned in the thread already >>; The lantern isn't symbolic, it's useful; she's a spelunker. Thanks though ^^

The novel is, as of yet, currently unnamed. I'm bad with titles. And it looks like I may not even be writing this one this year, but another one that I have worked out a bit more... go figure.

Speaking of novels, how did your NaNoWriMo 2005 creation turn out?

I think it's... great!
Your style is so defined and crisp, I really like it.
The details you put into the clothing... It's really nice.

Are you going to honour us with a coloured copy? Oooh, I'd much enjoy it. XD
Great work, still! *applause*

It's still in paper editting phase, though it may be scrapped for now, since sooooo much work needs to be done on it that it may as well be completely rewritten. If I'm feeling brave, I may post the original up for people to read through, but thats an incredibly rough draft since I haven't done any computer editting yet.

@Pachinko: I will be colouring this at some point when I have the time commited. I may start tomorrow if I feel the urge. Both Dottytor and Crapse are colouring it though, so you can see theirs when they're done, which will probably be sooner than mine.
