The studio at Capcom that brought us Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe are now making a fabulous game called Okami. You play as a white wolf which is the embodiment of the sun goddess Amaterasu, using your celestial brush to give life to a world attacked by the great evil known as Orochi.
Looking like a woodblock painting, this game takes cel shading to the next level, and with the ability to interact with your environments by painting has me all excited. You can paint a circle in the sky creating a sun, give life to barren cherry blossom trees, create lilypads on water, slash enemies and objects into pieces, and all of this with only 3 of the 13 powers you get in the game.
The game is beautiful both in style and quality, though it is easy to see how it pushes the PS2 to it's very limits. There are great affects like when Amaterasu's run you leave a trail of grass and flowers behind you and how her tail spills ink all over the place as she hops around. It all comes together so beautifully. It's seems like a game that will be held up with Shadow of the Colossus as just too great to be contained on the system it was created for.
After playing the demo in the last OPM, I now know that this is my most anticipated game of the year. I knew I wanted it, but just not this much. I hope everyone else looks into it.

I have been looking at that one for a while. Looks like really great and interesting graphics. Definately unlike any game i've seen before. Has a lot of potential to be a good game.

Yeah this is one of the few PS2 games I really am anticipating... Everything Ive read on it makes it sound like its gonna be a really awesome game... plus being a student of Japanese culture and everything I think its awesome thats its based on Japanese folk tales... I just hope that nothing gets lost in the translation.
Anybody know when its supposed to hit the states?

May I believe they are releasing in the US.

I have also been looking into this game, due to the fact that is based on all the Japanese like Senshi had said, and as for the question that was asked it is to release some time in September, I am not sure of what day exactly just in September. The way that the game looks it seem to have alot that would make it one of the best games for the PS2.
Here are a few images of the game,

Graphics aren't top like most gammers like, but for the way they made this game it is amazing.

As I said before, graphics are really not the most important, but it does ure look nice. My interest grew in the game too and appearently its coming to Japan April 20. Lately ive been able to easily get imports so there is a good chance that I should be able to aquire this. I could at least comment on how would the gameplay is like so if everynes patient, I might be able to give my two cents later on.

Not much longer till the japanese release. Those lucky bastards. I know I could just import, but I need that money for other things and I also would like to enjoy my game in english if possible. Oh well. Just a few more months.

I’m really excited about this game, it looks so innovative! I think this game would have been perfect for Nintendo Revolutions new weird controller.

Yea, you are probably right. I kind of wish it was on the Revolution or Gamecube, but still, as long as it comes out, I am happy.
I just heard the Weekly Famitsu scores for the game. Ookami got 10/10/10/9 or a total of 39/40. Things are sounding good and I want the game even more.

I just happened to pick up Okami today, and even though I'm only an hour into it, I'm loving it so far. First of all, the game looks beautiful. I know it's an obvious fact, but the whole game looks like one big watercolour painting. There are all sorts of neat effects, such as the trails you leave behind you, the artistic attacks you can make with your paintbrush, and just the whole colour scheme. Plus, the animation is incredibly swift. Beautiful. I'm a bit dissapointed in the sound department though, since all the voices sound like really high pitched gibberish. But in the grand scheme of things, it hardly detracts from the experience. Finally, I have to say that the gameplay is smooth and the control is tight. It's incredibly easy to move our wolf friend around the environment, and making attacks and puzzle solutions with the celestial brush becomes second nature. It's hard to describe what this game is like. It's sort of an action/platformer, that offers up one of those original "Shadow of the Collosus" type experiences. You know how SotC revolved around a few primary premises but it really set it apart from everything else? That's how Okami is with it's nature on exploration, the use of the celestial brush (which you can literally use to draw bridges on the environment, create gusts of wind, make the sun come up, slash boulders in half, etc...), and the beautiful artistic style. I encourage everyone to at least rent this, but for me it was well worth the purchase.

I'm really looking forward to playing this. It's just so pretty. I'm really hoping the PS2 will produce a good many more innovative games before the PS3 comes out, since I won't be able to afford that for a while.

Yep, I got it too (a little later than I wanted, thanks to bills). I will say it does feel like Zelda, but has enough differences that you don't really think about it while playing it. I am about 5-6 hours in the game, and the only thing that could be considered bad is that the game isn't very difficult.
There is so much to do in the game I can definetly see myself playing this for 40 hours or so, which is quite a bit for an action/adventure game.

I've already got the game the day it came out. And read my review, on the Last game completion.
