Ooh, that should be interesting. I wonder how they will depict Shinigami. CG? A guy in a costume? Or maybe they'll just make them look human?

I'm looking forward to it. :)

Oh...

Oh...

OH SNAP.

I'm officially insanely excited now. Please excuse me while I run around the room making silly happy noises plz.

I think this has a hell of a lot of potential. It'll need a good director and good actors (Ryuhei Matsuda for Light/Raito!) and will need a certain visual style and excellent editing to accentuate the tension in what is mainly a dialogue driven story. The music will need to work perfectly, too.

And DK, as for the Shinigami I reckon they'll be a mixture of costume and CGI. That's how I'd do it, anyway :XD:

These join Superman Returns as Trem's Most Anticipated Films of 2006. GG.

I would rather see an anime of this manga, rather than a live action.

Actually, I agree with Soundchazer on this

Not to say that I'm uninterested in the film/s, I would like to see how it turns out. Plus I don't think it would hurt a story like Death Note to be limited to about two hours as I found that a lot of the suspense and character dynamics of Death Note have been hurt by its long run.

Dtortot

My only worry is that it will be mindbogginly boring with all the dialogue. That is the great thing about the manga, you have time to read it at your own pace. But in a movie you have to listen and read everything while paying attention to the scene.

I just hope it won't be confusing. Movies with lots of intrincated dialogs tend to do that and if Death Note has something is intrincated dialog. So if you are confused you will get bored and more probably, vice versa too.

If it's a Toho movie they'll be using costumes no doubt. XD

I'll reseve judgements until I see the movies, but Initial D live action was better than the animated series, but that is not saying much.

Some further news: The movies will star Fujiwara Tatsuya who played Nanahara, the main character in Battle Royale. There's been no confirmation as to whether he's playing Light or L yet, but he'd be good as either I think. The director has also been announced - Kaneko Shuusuke, of the 90s Gamera films and the second Azumi film.

This is good news. It's really actually happening :D

Pedro The Hutt
01-27-2006, 10:48 AM
Don't forget that Kaneko is also director Gojira, Mosura, Kingu Gidora. XD

But that is re-assuring, the movie should be in very capable hands then.

DarkKanti

That's cool. I really like Fujiwara Tatsuya's acting. I can definitely see him playing Light more than L though.

Haha, I completely agree. Then again I think, I guess they got cast in those roles for a reason, and I'm sure they'll look great in character...even if the names accompanying those headshots really do look like they should be switched :XD:

Wait, my memory of the earlier chapters is a bit rusty, but what exactly was the "Yobatsu Coporate Killing"?

DarkKanti
01-31-2006, 03:55 PM
I was a bit confused by that as well. I thought the Yobatsu Corporate Killing was when Light relinquished the Death Note to one of the heads of the corporation, but the duel with L kind of ended right after that arc. I'm starting to think it was something else though.

Thanks for letting us know about this :D

Having browsed the hugely annoying website, I really think they're on the right track with this one. The trailer, whilst little more than a teaser, is very stylish and has the kind of "look" that I think will work really well in the movie itself. Fujiwara Tatsuya also looks convincing as Light, which was my only real concern casting-wise.

I really can't wait for the films now.

Drool~

This website reminds me of J.K. Rowling and the Takagism (http://www.takagism.net/) flash games sites, all interactive; very fitting to Death Note's story. I can't wait to see this (though I'm still waiting for a Death Note anime).

Apart from the following website features, did anyone find something else: (some hidden feature, perhaps?)
- The apple
- The monitor with the trailer
- The map above the monitor
- The booklet over the desk
- The books on the shelf with the Introduction and Cast & Staff
- And the scroll on the wall?

No, that's all I've found so far... what has surprised me the most so far the most about the cast is... "Chairman" Kaga Takeshi as Inspector Yagami. But I'm sure he can pull it off!

Red Hot Chilli Peppers Song For Death Note (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=8678)

You read that right! For the first time since ever, RHCP is allowing one of their songs to be played in a movie, in the Death Note movie no less!

Dani California Video (http://www.redhotchilipeppers.com/news/news.php?uid=174) (Did I mention how great this song is and how hilarious the video is?)

An interesting Blog entry on the subject... (http://santoslove.exblog.jp/4340687)

Although the RHCP-DN matching doesn't sound to well at first, I love both the manga and the band to care. I'm sure they will make it fit.

I think it is important to mention that this is not the first time that RHCP is related to a manga, that would be Harold Sakuishi's (BECK) retelling of the time he met the RHCP in "Under the Bridge". And did I forget to mention that the RHCP are HUGE in Japan?

DarkKanti
04-06-2006, 03:15 PM
Niiiiiice.

I love that song. <3 the Chilli Peppers. I'm sure they'll find a scene or two in which that song'll fit.

I also just checked out the trailer and am very excited about this movie now. It's coming in June right?

Tremolo

Here's too another thumbs up towards the song - the chorus especially seems to fit Death Note pretty well. I could see it being played over the end credits, but we'll just have to wait and see.

And yeah DK, the first one does seem to be set for a June release, the second one in October I think.

Based on what little you see in the teaser trailer, I concur with Trem on this. It looks like it will have just the right stylish atmosphere for Death Note. I am really looking forward to this one, although I was also hoping for an anime Death Note series. Still, this looks like it will be just my type of movie.

I would rather see an anime of this manga, rather than a live action.
The only problem with an anime of Deatnote is that it would require next to no animation as entire monologues are read out by seiyuu, normally inside a character's head.
I would, however, like to see a decent western adaption :D

Pedro The Hutt

That she did, but they probably pulled a Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and/or reasoned that blonde hair could only look good on a MANGA Japanese girl without it looking fake. Besides, black hair fits a wannabe-gothic-girly so much better.

4-28-06 DEATH NOTE Film Project Progressions

Major news to relay on the front of the upcoming 2 tiered DEATH NOTE movie series. The first serial is due in Japanese theaters on Saturday, June 17th with the second following closely in October. Distribution is being handled by Warner, a box-office profit target of 10 billion Yen from both films combined has been set, 320 theaters are being aimed at for the release. Fans outside of Japan can rejoice in the fact that both an overseas distribution of these 2 movies and possible remakes are being looked at. Combined, both films have a 2 billion Yen production budget. Nippon Television Network will acquire substantial rights after the theatrical release. Cast will include Tatsuya Fujiwara as Raito Yagami, Ken'ichi Matsuyama as L, Toda Erika as Misa, Kaga Takeshi as Souichiro, Mishima Hikari as Sayu, Godai Michiko as Sachiko, Fujiwara Shunji as Watari, Seto Asaka as Naomi, Hosokawa Shigeki as Raye, Aoyama Souta as Matsuda, Shimizu Shin as Aizawa, Okuda Tatsuhito as Ukita and Nakamura Ikuji as Mogi. Production staff includes: Director: Kaneko Shuusuke, Subdirector: Yamaguchi Kouji, Director-something: Matsue Yoshiki and Camerawork by Takase Hiroshi.

Discuss possible US release, possible Western adaptations, cast, the 5 times plus expected gain (2 billion Yen budget --> 10 billion Yen aimed box office) ... or just smile.

As an aside, the official site has had another big update, go look! XD

And I sure hope that it'll just be a nice as-is DVD/theatrical release in Europe & America. I think I'll scream bloody murder should there be an american remake. You'd think that they've realised by now that the west can't remake Japanese movies to save their lives. (The 1998 Godzilla comes to mind)
I already shudder at the thought of american actors saying Ree-you-zek-ee instead of Ryuuzaki.

4-30-06 ---- Death Note Anime

While sparse details are available, following up Friday's film series news, it's just been revealed that Tsugumi Ooba and Takeshi Obata's Death Note manga will be adapted to animation by Nippon Television Network in Japan. A video game is due there this winter and a tribute album will be released in June. No official timetable exists for the anime roll-out although a Fall 2006 (we're hearing October) release is likely.

\o/ Victoly!

(That sums it up pretty well)

I've never claimed that American remakes have ever had any inherent quality, but they are always inevitable when money can be made ^_^

Here's something interesting, though it kinda bumps into what Rove stated before. Either or, I got this from somewhere online, so take it as you will:

Death Note Manga Ending, TV Anime Adaption, and more. May 01 2006
According to Weekly Shounen Jump's early sales information, Death Note (Story by Tsugumi Ooba, Art by Takeshi Obata) will be ending in Shounen Jump issue 24, on sale May 15th.

Also from the early sales info regarding new Death Note products:

- TV Anime adaption
- Game adaption this winter
- Tribute album will be released in June

For weekly translation of Shounen Jump sales info, visit WeeklyJump.

Death Note ending? Hrm. Good? Bad? Jean-Claude Van Damme? Discuss.

I stopped reading Death Note a long time ago but I'll probably still read the last couple chapters because I am curious to see how it ends.

Hmm it seems a lot of manga series have been getting both a movie and anime adaption lately: Honey and Clover, Nana and now Death Note. I wonder if this is a going to be a trend with the manga series that are focused more on RL situations (not that Death Note is really realistic).

Edit: So I just read Chapter 107. I can't believe they dragged this whole thing out for 107 chapters and that was the end. It was anticlimatic to say the least. Well in the end I still think the manga lost its appeal after the first two volumes.

And Ryuuk looks really rather good - not photo-realistic or anything, but certainly believable enough to work.

Am I the only one who didn't really want Ryuk to look photo-realistic? I mean, if he looks too normal, I'd think that would kind of betray the otherworldly nature of Ryuk. He's not supposed to fit in, in my opinion. I really liked how he looked in the trailer.

>_> That was a good movie.

While in Japan I went with one of my host families to see it. Once I got over the size and cleanness of the theater, I focused on the movie.

The beginning and ending of this first half had some director's creative twisting, but everything else was pretty on key.

I suggest that any DeathNote fan watch it, but they shouldn't be suprised if something aren't exactly the same as in the manga.

That is an interesting scene in the movie.

I'm putting this in spoilers just in case. In the movie, Light kills off a thug that offended him previously. He kills him at a train track after using the DN once before. He proves that it works, and is pretty shocked by the power in his hands.
