View Full Version : A Tear for a Scene?

Have you ever shed a tear over any particular anime scene? I sure have, just a few minutes ago I was bawling over Now & Then, Here & There. I'd tell you about the scene but apparently I don't get spoiler tags on my computer so...

Please just post your thoughts on the tearful scene. If you don't have one then that's fine just don't spam up my thread with your comments about it.

Let's bring your frowny face upwards Gigadi.

2 more "special" episodes will be added to the last of the 5 DVD volumes in Japan.

Being honest though I was OK with the ending as it was.

I cry all the time watching anime because I'm a big sap. Heck, I cried when 'Nephrite' died in the Sailor Moon dub when I watched it like ten years ago. I cried in Fushigi Yuugi during the OVA episode with Hotohori and his son. I cried during Escaflowne when characters I liked died and when Allen's dad was lying dying in the snow. I've cried during Naruto, Now and Then, Here and There, Grave of the Fireflies, Pita-Ten, Yami No Matsuei, Trigun, and last night I found myself tearing up over a story in Ranma 1/2....RANMA 1/2 for Christ's sake!

I'm so easy to manipulate emotionally, I'm every melodramatic scriptwriter's dream....

Now there are times that a anime scene may make me feel upset but it hasent been to the point of tear break. There area a few scenes in AppleSeed that may do just that and also in PrincessMononoke, and last there have been some in FruitsBaskett.
The only thing that really gets to me is if someone in the anime gets Killed and that person mattered alot to someone and you watch them cry, that is what gets to me. And watching a character leave another without word many of these things can make me feel upset.

I cried in a couple places in Sailormoon, Grave of the Fireflies, of course, and some other things, but I don't remember them and they probably don't count since I was on my period at the time, and very emotional. I've cried more during manga than anime I think.

Full Moon wo Sagashite... too many scenes to name. That show was so weird; most anime are only supposed to have you cry in like one place or something, but FMWS just kept bringing on the pain...

I also cried during my second viewing of Voices of a Distant Star. Meh.

Aside from those two, I don't really cry when I'm watching anime. Sure, I've gotten teary watching Air, Fruits Basket, and even One Piece, but it was never enough to make all that moisture fall down my face.

I've shed a tear here and there before, the one's that I remember the most is Fushigi Yuugi when Nuriko moved the huge boulder from the entrance of the temple. Second was a few occurences in Grave of the Fireflies. That movie had me crying like a baby....I never cried that much at a movie since I was kid.

The end of Gankutsuou episode 18 set off the water-works, but apart from that I'm a hard, manly bastard and rarely cry at stuff I watch.

However, Triangle Heart made me cry tears, alright. Tears of blood! Awful, awful, awful anime. Awful.

I cried after seeing a bunch of Gundam SEED Destiny due to the absolute awfulness.

Shuffle makes me cry.

I thought your eyes would be gone by now.

***

I can only remember 2 scenes that almost put the wet stuff in my eyes and had me choking up.

AIR - Misuzu running towards Haruko. People who had seen the show know what I'm talking about (I think it's the ep before the last one). One of the scenes that made me fell in love with Kyoto Animation.

Fruits Basket - When the rabbit boy was talking about his mother. So sad T_T... But I was younger back then :p.

The only Anime related thing that made me cry was actually from a visual novel;Planetarian. The ending is so damn sad T_T....

Definitely... Planetarian is like the only visual novel I've ever played (I tried to play Kanon, but I got bored), and it was... beautiful. I immensely enjoyed it.

Kanon (the visual novel) starts off slow... Too slow for its own good. It does get better and has a good reason for its popularity.

Then again, it's nowhere as good as Planetarian (which doesn't seem as popular :p). Arg, just thinking about the ending almost makes me cry again :p...

Kanon (the visual novel) starts off slow... Too slow for its own good. It does get better and has a good reason for its popularity.Well, it's also currently only 57% translated... so I'd reach a dead-end eventually anyways. I'll probably give it another chance once the translation is 100% complete.

No. I have been shocked and surprised a few times in anime at the way things have gone and turned out, but I have never had an emotional enough buildup for a particular character's tragedy. Anime just never seems to do drama well enough to bring out such strong sad reactions in me.

Shuffle makes me cry.

Hoo boy...

I'll be the first to admit I'm a crier. And yes, all month long. In the right emotional state, I'll cry at sappy Hallmark commercials.

Okay, let's go down the list...

Fushigi Yuugi...When Nuriko died, when Hotohori died, a little bit when Chiriko and Mits died, but they were entirely underdeveloped. When Amiboshi died, when Suboshi died. Yeah, Suboshi was a bit of a homicidal maniac, but he was so sweet and devoted! When we saw Nakago's past - so tragic. Finally, at the ending. Yeah, good endings make me cry.

Ayashi no Ceres When Chidori died, when Aki died, when we thought Touya died, when Touya came back. A bit when the other Ceres died, but that was affected by absolute shock.

Cowboy Bebop. Need I say more?
Grave of the Fireflies. See above.

Full Moon wo Sagashite. The end had me bawling. Playing New Future was the final touch.

Azumanga Daioh, because it related so closely to real life.

Air

The end of the second Cardcaptor Sakura movie

Fruits Basket. Any tragic past had me sniffling. Hatori, Momiji, Kyo...all of them.

Gravitation. When Shuichi got attacked and...violated. When Yuki's memories started returning. When we flashed back to when Yuki shot that bastard.

The end of Read or Die

Trigun. When Wolfwood died. One of the saddest moments in anime ever.

Fullmetal Alchemist. Although I have not yet finished it, Hughes's death is up there with Wolfwood's. The scene with Alicia crying and asking why they were burying Daddy...oh my God. I teared up when at Anime Expo I saw a Hughes cosplayer wearing a halo.

Series that make me cry in pain:
Shuffle
Air Master
Magical Canan
Amazing Nurse Nanako

Oh boy... here we go.

Revolutionary Girl Utena Last episode as a whole, really.

Fushigi Yuugi Character deaths are one thing...but the slaughter of Tamahome's family at the end of the first season made me cry more than anything.

Rose of Versailles.
Marmalade Boy The christmas episode still gets me every single time

One PiecePretty much every character's childhood has something that get's me teary eyed. Nami's abduction by Arlong, Sanji's starvation, Usopp losing his parents, Zoro's determination after the death of Kunia, Robin's hometown being litterally wiped off the map, and finally...one phrase will always make me teary eyed: "But Shanks....YOUR ARM" Aside from their childhood, the Usopp vs. Luffy fight really got to me, big time.

Haibane Renmei
Grave of the Fireflies

Probably lots more that I can't think of right now.

I tend to cry more watching live action than anime. Grave of the Fireflies made me cry the first two times I saw it. Now and Then, Here and There didn't make me cry, but left me tense and wide-eyed. I think Momoji's story in Fruits Basket might have made me teary eyed once and there are many moments that have made me incredibley sad, just not quite reduced to tears.

Anime can definetly have an emotional impact, but the fact that it's animated makes of it more of a metaphor so it makes me think rather than make me cry. Grave of the Fireflies is somewhat of an exception to this though, because I watched it knowing that it was based on a true account. I honestly don't think I would have the same reaction to it if I knew it was fiction.

EDIT: A few AMVs have made me teary eyed as well :'(

Ditto, with one exception. Grave of the Fireflies had me watery-eyed, but not because it's so sad. Rather, because I was so mad at Seita by the end of the movie that my vent up frustration needed an outlet, so my eyes watered. Not really a cry, but that's the closest I've come.

Did she cry in pain because the show is so boring or because its a real tear jerker. From the earlier episodes of Shuffle that I have seen it would make me cry just from wasting my time with it, if it gets better, I might pick it up again, there might be a misunderstanding here Lurker it is hard to tell if someone is serious or sarcastic especially with this series, so I will hold off Shuffle bashing until the series is over.

EDIT
No, just trust us all on this. It really is that bad.

The worst thing about this show is that it shows the potential for interesting drama (even if it is, in all honesty, melodrama) but it can't maintain it for more than two episodes. The rest is just insulting. Sometimes I think the thing's a parody of the dating sim genre... but I'm not ****ing laughing.

from Wolf's Rain
when Hubb is pulling Cheza from the truck, and it drops with Cher in it Though that was about half shock, half sadness.

In all honesty, there was no scene that I can remember that was sad or depressing enough to make me shed a tear. If there were any, I probably didn't get to it, since I only cried out of boredom. Here I was, determined to sit this one out because I heard so many good things about it, and after three episodes of nothing, I am literally about to cry from boredom. The whole series (the few episodes I watched) felt like reading a goddamn Russian classic; it takes three pages for some character to take one step down a flight of stairs.

But, I can think of something recently where I said to myself: "That's really sad." There are tons:

Mai Hime: The scene where Tate dies really tore me up. Not so much Mai's reaction, but Natsuki's reaction to Mai.

Azumanga Daioh: When Kagura starts crying after Yukari gives her an inspiring good bye speech, you know the scene I'm talking about.

Now and Then Here and There:This whole series made me cry, but the saddest scene was when Sara tries to kill her unborn child by bashing her stomach in with a rock. Then her wied-eyed reaction when Shu hugs her.

Mushishi:The end of episode 5, when the Girl realizes that she is alive.

Angelic Layer: In the last epsiode where Misaki is trying desperately to get Hikaru to stand up. That struck a chord with me, don't know why.

Full Metal Alchemist: NOT WHEN HUGHES DIED. THAT SCENE DID NOT FAZE ME. But rather, the scene in which that one Chimera, I forget her name, was stabbed to death inside of Alphonse was just really sad.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The scene in which Asuka cries out for her dead mother in her sleep made me tear up. It was just so well done.

Akira: The ending, when Kaneda sees all of Tetsuo's memories.

Spirited Away: Just the ending when she is running across the field. Such a beautiful end to a beautiful movie. I cried.

Metropolis: The very end, when the Sound Recorder plays Tima's voice before running out of battery and shutting off.

Yeah, that's a long list. >_>

Well, I don't know if I ever really cried over anime. If I did, it would probably have been over Grave of the Fireflies. Otherwise, there were some scenes I did find some scenes sad, but never really cried.

FMA
I wasn't so affected by Hughes' death as I was with what came after. "Why are they burying Papa?" Otherwise, Marta's death was very well done, as was Sloth's. Kind of bringing all of Ed and Al's conflict with their mother to a very fitting close.

One Piece
The backstories were well done, but not emotion-provoking from me. The Usopp-Luffy fight, on the other hand, was. I look forward to seeing that animated.

Azumanga Daioh
Maybe it's because I read/watched Azumanga right when I was graduating High school, but the ending was touching. Perfectly fitting for the series, yet satisfying on most every level.

I don't tend to get overly emotional when watching anime (or movies, for that matter). If I think of any more, I'll put them up

Wrong again. He didn't write it. He adapted the manga by Aoi Hiiragi into a screenplay.

He did something that involved writing (adapting, this case).

But more importantly, one scene that genuinely moves me to tears is when the little girl in the Grave of Fireflies (I can't believe I forgot her name) dies. I believe that that is the most touching moment I've ever seen in any movie.

Hmm... why not? Here are some heartbreaking moments of a number of titles:

Now and Then, Here and There:
Two scenes: One is where Sala is staring at the moon and ran through the desert, escaping from Heliwood. The other, when she tried to kill herself and her baby with a rock in the underground well. Powerful stuff.
Grave of The Fireflies:
As Pachinko mentioned, the scene where the little girl died pretty much chartered GoTF as one of the best Studio Ghibli titles around.
Ayashi No Ceres:
Despite the nauseating amount of melodrama, the one scene that did make me sad was when Chidori died. Seriously.
Rurouni Kenshin - Tsuiokuhen:
You should've seen this coming, don't you >.> The scene when Tomoe died protecting Kenshin and completing the cross-scar on his face. Greatest moment ever, and I'm not kidding on this.
Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo:
The fight scene between The Count and Franz in episode 18. Basically the emotional aspect of the whole episode from beginning to end is priceless.
Ghost In The Shell - Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG:
A very rare scene of pathos in episode, on how Major and Kuze first met when they were kids. Practically the whole concept about how Kuze and Major and the crane-folding is the most moving moment in probably the whole GITS trilogy.
Fruits Basket:The episode that takes the crop is the episode on how Hatori lost sight of his left eye and eventually erased Kana's memories. There are other scenes worth shedding tears for, but this one stands above the rest for me. One of the saddest moments till this day...

I know there are others, but as of now I can't recall. Honorable mentions include Gungrave, NANA, Fushigi Yuugi, Full Metal Alchemist, etc.

Grave of the Fireflies, especially when the brother starts going on about 'his dad's crusier' H.I.M.S Maya, which was sunk with all hands in 1944. tHE KID DOESN'T KNOW HIS DAD HAS BEEN DEAD FOR ALMOST A YEAR:(

Parts of Vision of Escaflowne are also quite sad, mostly because Hitomi keeps falling for guys are completely out of her league, and she is trapped in a world not her own.

Cowboy Bebop, when Julia dies:(

Macross, Roy Fokker's death

Yay for resurrecting old threads! The ending of Cowboy Bebop left me feeling kind of down and wishing for more...
I cried more than once watching Elfen Lied and even more with Now and Then, Here and There.

The last episode of Kannazuki no Miko made me cry. That's one of the most well-done ending IMO.
