Anyone read Death Note? It's a manga about a super-intelligent boy who finds a notebook belonging to a Shigami - a god of death. The boy uses it to kill criminals (trying to eventually make criminals understand that they won't get away with their crimes any longer), but then an equally super-intelligent detective starts hunting him for murder, and a duel of minds between the two of them ensues...
Highs: Great artwork, good humor and an unusual plot concept
Lows: Two smartasses pissing everyone off with almost narcistic shows of intelligence. Ugh.

I just bought the first two volumes. Will read them shortly and comment.
I've read a lot of the manga and i became a fan of the series since the first chapter, it's a refreshing change from other manga that have a lot of action scenes as the highlight of the series. The confontations between L and Light were always amusing but it did became a little "wordy" in some parts, but that's not enought to keep me from enjoying the manga.
I'll be sure to keep up with the rest of the licensed manga, because of the dialogue it takes longer to read than the avarage manga(and that's a good thing).
Death Note is one of the series I've been following really closely. I have to give the creator serious credit for thinking of the least likely situation to occur, followed by every possible outcome so you're always left guessing. With a manga as full of twists and turns as this is, continuity is a must, and Tsugumi Ooba does a brilliant job of keeping things in check.
No fights, no romance, just enough drama to keep you on your toes untill next week's Jump comes out.

It's not really drama. It is more of a thriller based on wit battles.
I love Death Note, it got boring a few chapters, but now it has picked up the pace and started to get interesting again.

Well, at first I absolutely loved Death Note. The first four or five volumes were awesome between L and Kira. However, for a while after thata it slowed down a bit. Lately, I've been following it pretty closely and it seems that it's picking up the pace again.

I have the first volume, and I love it. I plan on picking up the other(s?) soon.
I really like this theme, which to my knowledge, is pretty original. I never thought I would like Thriller genre manga, but I really enjoyed vol. 1. Can't wait to read more.

I just bought volume one of Deathnote. It is the first manga I have ever read I am hoping it is enjoyable. Is this a good gateway into Manga since I am just starting out? even though I have been an Anime fan for five years.

I have read the first two volumes, and i really like them allot n_n! I usally don't like shounen jump titles very much, but i am really happy i bought this one. The only thing i don't like about it, is that I often find myself having to re-read things that i have already read, in order to fully grasp what is happening in the chapter. but i'm used to reading shoujo/ romance/ drama... which i guess don't really take to much thought to enjoy o_o;;; but it's still a really great book n_n;

Seriously, I find those battles of wits easily the best part of the manga, even though I thoroughly enjoy the humor, artwork, and drama too. Without the witty dialogue the whole thing just wouldn't work. Personally, this is one of the very few manga's I read, for a good reason.

I've been following this manga closely too. Funnily enough, it seemed to have less impact while there was more action recently. But now, things seem to be taking a very interesting direction.
I still think L might return :)

I thought the same thing for a long time, and I still haven't counted it out as a possibility. It's just that I haven't figured out a way in which he could still be alive and have the story still make sense. If the writer does find a way, that would be one of the coolest and unexpected plot twists ever.

To me, their "witty" battle of minds would more often than not grate on my nerves, especially during L's "I'm now 4% sure you're Kira... oh, make that 5%" phase. What person who's right in his mind would make such calculations? And Kira wasn't exactly better with his "I need more safeguards" attitude. No, if I want to see superhumans battling one another, I'll just read X-Men.
I have heard of the manga...I am not sure if it a series or not? But what I did hear was that is was good. I am looking forward to getting it.

Well, to be honest, L wasn't exactly "right-minded," was he?
Chapter 88
I really do think that Death Note is getting back on track. Light has finally gotten in touch with Mikami, and told Takada about him being Kira. Everything seems to be going in Light's favor right now. He'll be able to once again give out orders as Kira and the NPA will be unable to prove anything. Aiazawa is still suspicious though, as seen in the last panel of the chapter.

Well when the shinigami killed W (watari?), L did seem to die soon after, but because we never did learn his real name it is always a possibility that his name wasn't written in the note and he faked his death.
My suspision is that if he's alive he'll appear either when M and N are finished or just before Kira succeeds.

I thought of that too, however, I seem to remember something about the NPA holding a privatae funeral for L after his death. I would assume that they buried his body. Of course, there's still a chance. My main problem with his death was that it just felt so abrupt.

Skimming past all the spoilers, I also read teh two volumes translated by Viz. I very much enjoy this manga, and am quite anxious to see what happens.
Note: I originally bought it simply because I first saw the characters in Jump Super Stars on my DS.

I always thought it was meant to be more a sign of his eccentric attitude than a showoff of his intelligence, thus never really took it that seriously... but I disagree on Kira, I never found his attitude that irritating even though he didn't have such an eccentric attitude as his excuse.

I think we are forgetting Misa, who is made of love and win X)Aw, true. One of the most well developed and interesting airheads ever (In a good way! In a good way!). Too bad she hasn't had too much exposure for a while now (I'm at chapter 65), but at least she's still alive.

Chapter 89 & 90
It looks as though things are picking up and about to come to a conclusion. I'd estimate another 20 or 30 chapters. Near and Light's meeting should be interesting, but I can't see how it would help Near in the slightest. Even if he does get proof that Light is Kira what will he do? The whole world is on Kira's side. There's not much he can do, short of trying to kill Light hmself, which he already decided he would not do. It wouldn't surprise me in the bit, if Light were to go public with his identity soon enough. Hell, he has more than enough supporters.

Chapter 92
Well, Mikami completely dropped the ball in this chapter. Just as it looked like the SPK was going to give up their suspicion of him, he goes and kills a guy right in front of them. This was an interesting chapter though, and it'll be even more interesting to see how this all works out.

I juat picked up volume three of the U.S. release today and I have to say all the "he might be thinking this so I will do this" is getting tedious if anyone has read further than this volume, does it get better or change? because I really liked the first two volumes but this one has been a disappointment and I am not sure if I want to continue reading this if it stays this way.

Except it would be suicide if anyone who hated Kira got a death note. He'll remain in the shadows.

Hmmm... What a coincidence...
I just finished most of Death Note a couple of days ago... And I have to say that it was one of the most impressive series that I have read so far... It was fun trying to guess who would win... Would it be Light or L?
I really must see more of Near in the future... He's pretty impressive...
