I know that most people believe that some is cute at first, but someone in your life or you have heard about say or do something that was just plain stupid, and annoying. Like "dee ta dee" Man i hate that one. Please share.

Trem = win.
Not so much phrases, but I have a very low tolerance for n00bs (i.e., the morons who don't seem to understand the concept of "rules", "posting guidelines", and "etiquette"). Also, native English speakers with atrocious spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Does 'idk' mean 'I don't know'?
I really dislike when people overuse 'like' when speaking aloud. I know its unfair for me to criticize as I substitute 'like' for 'um...' or something of the ilk when I'm trying to think of how to phrase what I wish to say...but for some reason 'like' really irks me.
I also dislike overusing abbreviations. I saw one yesterday that was like IcBintJL and I was left scratching my head until someone told me it stood for 'I Can't Believe it's not the Justice League'

I hate internet shorthand in general.
I whole heartedly agree. I may make mistakes sometimes, but I try to keep my grammar and spelling at my best.
Though there is one abbreviated phrase that really gets me the most and that is:
IMO
In my opinion. I always yell at the computer, saying "Why can't IMO be spelled out into in my opinion?!". It took me the longest time to actually figure out what IMO meant in the first place, I had to find that one out by a friend.

I'm pretty sure he didn't mean this for internet stuff, guys.
Whenever someone tells a joke, and it isn't funny, and they say "Do you get it? AHA, you do right?" It's suprising how much I hear this. YES I GET IT, but I didn't laugh because it sucked. Or maybe I did get it, and laughed, and they still ask "do you get it?!" Sigh.
On the internet, any shorthand besides the standard "wtf, lol, omg, rofl, lmao" drives me bonkers. Over use of emoticons as well. Specifically a lot of the anime emoticons, but only on forums. In chat I don't really give a damn.

The most annoying thing I've come across is when people feel the need to use some stupid phrase to agree with you, rather than just saying "I agree."
For instance, "I hear ya!" or "I hear that!" Well, no shit. And here I thought you were just standing in front of me, nodding attentively because you enjoy it.
Redundancy also annoys me to no great end because it repeats things which have already been said at an earlier time or overqualifies things, and it's just generally annoying.

Hm. There are a few things. I find terrible spelling and grammar more funny than annoying. Because then I get to pick on them for it. : )
Mostly, though, I can't stand people thinking "gay" is an insult. "OMG ur ghey" ticks me right the hell off, faster than any internet shorthand could. It's just so ignorant. Like they think gay people are put on Earth for their own personal amusement or something. ARGH!
. . . I couldn't tell you the logic behind that thought, but that's just the vibe I get.
The same holds true, perhaps more so, for guys who think it's funny and cool to pretend to be effeminate, swishy and stereotypically gay. I hate people like that.
EDIT: Just to pander to popular belief, I dislike excessive abbreviating of words also. My English teacher has complained about freshmen -- get this -- spelling "you" as "u" on essays. On school essays. On school fscking essays.

I hate people who are practically illiterate in English when it's their first language, like Tyrdium previously stated.
Maybe it's just me, but it's not that hard to spell stuff like 'awkward' or 'telephone,' but nooooo, I've seen 'akward' and 'teliphone' too many times. I mean, come on! Those words aren't even that rare! It's not like we're asking you to spell "antidisestablishmentarianism' or 'Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolconiosis!' On top of that, THIS FORUM HAS BLOODY SPELL CHECK! USE IT!!!
Then there's 1337. Don't even get me started. "ST4R W4R5 1S T3H R0><0RZ!"
Bullsh*t.
Other things that get on my nerves:
"FTW." (What is that, anyway?)
"IMO."
"LOLZ."
"OMGROTFLMAO"
"MTFBWY."
"ZOMG!"
'OMG,' 'WTF, 'BRB,' 'LOL,' and 'LMAO' are okay in my opinion (see how easy that is?), as long as it's on like MSN Messenger or something. Other than that, you're fired.

Oh whatever. I'm not really sure what this thread is about, so I'm going to talk about what annoys me. It's those people who pretend to be nice and smile, but in reality, they don't really enjoy your presence.
The silly thing is, it's probably better to be like that than to just say, "I hate you!" but still, I find myself being more irritated by the former situation.

I've found the best retort to the 'gay' insult is along the lines of 'Ah, the retort of the pathetic' or something like that suggesting that the insulter isn't very good at it if he/she has to resort to 'gay'.
I think I get what the original purpose of this thread was. I have a friend, who likes to make himself out to be good at everything. It gets very annoying at times. Say, he wants to come round and do stuff, and I can't because I'm busy or just dead tired, then I'm instantly 'soft' or a 'pansy'. Oh, an the worst is for Age of Empires (insert number). I don't like the game, never really have. I find it completely unrealistic, and I don't like playing it because if I get a flanking charge on an artillery battery, outnumbering them 3 to 1, I expect those artillery crew to get completely and utterly F****** ARSE RAPED by my cavalry, not to have my cavalry completely wiped out for the loss of 1 cannon because they turn their guns on me and continue firing into combat, or when I built stone walls, I expect them to stop infantry movement, not have infantry burn them down and continue going. This has happened before and is just a couple out of many examples of things that I don't like about it.
However, to him, it only means that 'he's so skilled', and 'I'm afraid to play him, cause I'm going to get ownz00rzed'. GAH! it gets on my nerves. Yeah, you heard me Staker, if you ever read this thread.

Yes, Major Tom, it is very annoying to bet yrou butt PWNED in Age of Empires. = P
My nephew was in the stage of calling everything and EVERYTHING gay. I just hug him and tell him I love him. Then, he hugs me back and tells me he's gay too.

I'll admit, I don't like losing. I don't anybody likes losing, but I am usually a gracious loser. But in this case, his gloating of 'who's the greatest?' when he wins (yes, I do lose often at this game, I just can't seem to get into that 'don't think just build' frame of mind required) really gets on my nerves, so much so that I simply refuse to play the game anymore.
.......and are those spelling errors? On purpose, I hope.
etane
11-22-2005, 01:30 AM
Haha sorry those spelling errors are really errors.
I think if you imagined a single soldier in Age of Empire to be a hundred soldiers then things will start making more sense. Obviously, a single soldier is not going to take out a wall in a short amount of time. But, enmasse they can. And, maybe you didn't upgrade the armor etc etc on your calvary? You shoulda been able to slaughter the artilery! Maybe your friend is using some cheat code! Oh wellz, I haven't tuched AOE for awhile... I think the third is coming out soon.

This is not so much a particular "comment" (as the thread topic asks for), but I can't stand baby talk to pets, boy/girlfriends, children, etc. And on the internet I can't stand the intentional misspelling of 'the' to 'teh' and the many popular '1337' insults used by online gamers (yes, I know I suck at pvp, you don't have to rub it in :().

I dislike all sorts baby talk too. I'm always too fed up with that stuff to even try properly, and people think I'm being lazy and/or rude when I don't pinch a little baby on the cheek and start talking jibberish. I'm always communicating the way I would with any adult, telling morbid jokes and spreading my dark humor around, but with a smile on my face. That way the adults can laugh as well as the infant!
Pets I usually call rats or monsters (regardless of the type of animal), but again, I do this with a gentle voice, so it won't get upset.

People who seriously try to act tough on the internet probably annoys me the most.
It's the freaking internet!
Fanboys/Fangirls who type in shorthand, with bad spelling, while refusing to listen to anyone elses opinion are pretty damn annoying.
Internet shorthand?
A moderate annoyance. I've learned to deal with it, having one friend who her and almost everyone associated with her types in shorthand on AIM.
Bad spelling?
It's only the simple ones thats are even alittle annoying.
Oh, Myspace in general annoys me (yes, I KNOW), but mainly it's the emo's and anime roleplayers that bug me.
Emoticons and such?
Meh, I use them. I try to use them sparringly, or atleast with one of each part...

Teh. My God, I hate teh.
Internet shorthand is annoying yes, but it also annoys me when people use it as some sort of mockery. It's just not funny.
Emoticons I'm fine with for the most part.
blatent mispelling and misusing of words to sound smart. my god people, learn basic grammer!
Those that, for some reason or another, try to brag or talk about being tough on the internet or in person. "I'm a third degree black belt in three martial arts I learned at some McDojo and I have a really bad temper so don't mess with me. Also, on the last day I was there some hot girl I met that day gave me a handjob and I never saw her again." No, you're a loser that spends too much time fantasizing while masturbating to porn on that Dell bought by your mother. Shut the hell up.
Holocaust/Nanjing/genocide jokes aren't funny.
When people merely agree with someone else during an actual conversation or debate, whether online or in person, with for example "I agree"/"Hear hear"/"That's right." etc. They come off as either trying to kiss the ass and get attention from the person who may or may not have just said something intelligent; or just trying to come off as intelligent as well by saying something that somehow adds to the conversation at hand.
I was going to put something else but I forgot. Whatever.

As said before, the use of the word "like" drives me crazy. I hear teenagers using it the most. Especially many teenage girls around my area. I sat on the bus a little while back, and two loud girls sat behind me, using the word "like" after every 3rd word. It's just a lazy way to talk. Instead of saying something along the lines of "(insert here) said "I'm going to work today", and then my brother said "can you pick up some milk on the way home from work, because I'm really thirsty", the person will say "(insert here) was like, I'm going to work today, and my brother was all like, can you pick up some milk on the way home, because I'm like, really thirsty"

But besides that, no problems really. As long as I can comprehend the text I'm fine with anything.

Now that I think about it, I like most comments and abbreviations if used in the internet. In the internet where everything is written, completely grammatically correct text sounds a bit impersonal (aside from the text they're writing, of course) so stuff like n_n and XD do give across information about the poster and the text they're writing that wouldn't (and couldn't) be communicated otherwise.

Hmm.
My internet annoyances include:
-People who use "lol" every time they post, whether it be on chat or in forums. I know you're not really laughing when you type that. And if you are, I don't really care.
-People who use a million faces in one post. I'm alright with one or two; I use them all the time myself, but over three in one shot is stupid and repetitive.
-People who abbreviate everything. Like "srsly", "grl", "ttyl"...Is it really that difficult to type out a few more letters?
-People who use l337 5p34|< constantly. I don't mind the occasional "t3h" or "pwn3d", but if the entire sentence is like that...
...I'll kick your ass with my five black belts in 'pwn-j00r-ass no jutsu', lol. [/Sarcasm]
-People who speak in half-English, half-Japanese sentences. If you introduce yourself in Japanese and then start talking in English, go right ahead. Practice on me, I don't care. Just don't give me any "Ohayou, Ashley. What's up?"
Now in real life, the annoying ones are the
-People who tell you not to worry about something. I'll worry if I want to, especially if you're not going to. If you're looking around non-chalantly while there's a fire in the kitchen, I'm gonna ****ing do something about it, not just smile and say to "not worry" about it.
-People who say "Yeah well, your Mom." ...When did my Mom become so hated as to become an insult? My Mom? Pssh. Your Grandma.
-People who don't give up their seat on a bus to someone who looks like they need it more. Like a mother with five children around her, or someone with a bag that looks rather heavy, or someone who looks like they've been walking for a while and could use a break for their feet.
-My sisters. Well, come on.They're little sisters. They'll always be annoying to me.
-People who stand six feet away from the line, so you stand in front of them and then they come back over and say they were there first. Oh hell no. If you're not four feet or closer from the person in front of you's back for any reason other than leaving a space for peole to walk through, you are not in line and I will take your place.
-People who say 'like' constantly. I'll admit I say it a few times but not every other word. My use is usually: "So I was busy, and this thing...it just like attacked me." but when people go "I was, like, busy and like, this thing like, attacked me, like totally..." makes me want to squash their head.
-People who pick on little fat kids. I was a little fat kid. I was picked on. It just hits a nerve with me, ok?

I hate internet shorthand in general.
I wrote a paper on it once, for a Linguistic Anthropology class. Well, it and 1337. It was a fun one, because a surprising number of people in the class knew nothing or very little about it.
As for my pet peeves, I hate bad grammar in general, but the ones that really get me are improper comma use, improper apostrophe use, and the phrases "should of"/"could of", etc..
I also can't stand the use of the word "f**k" and its many derivations as filler in speech. This is a thousand times worse than using "like" (which is also annoying), because on top of sounding incredibly stupid, it's somewhat vulgar as well.

It means "own" - as in "to own someone (at something)". If someone has been owned ("pwnd"), then they have been outspoken/outdone/outwhatever in the most extreme and usually humiliating way possible. For example. If you were to make a thread about how the world is flat, and I came in and explained in a very condescending way point-by-point how you are wrong, then the next person to post would probably post something like this:

So to be "Pwned" is to make an a** of oneself
Hmm... kinda different. One can make an a** of oneself without other people involved, like saying something incredibly stupid in a forum or running around naked in public. But to use the term pwn, and example would be when you play a game, and your friend beat you, you could say that he pwn3d you.

I know that there was an extensive thread that tackled the use of Wikipedia entries to solve simple questions recently, and for the most part it was agreed that posting the link without further comment was pretty much frowned upon and useless, however, I think this link to the Wiki entry for Internet slang phrases (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_slang) might prove somewhat useful to those with neverending questions about the always increasing internet acronyms.

"<3" means "heart/love", as in Mr. A <3 Ms. B, and occasionally it's extended to "<3333" or substituted with "less-than-three". Miscellaneously, <8 is used with a similar meaning, only infinite; and </3 means a broken heart or alone.
I think there's more to it which I'm not aware of, but this is what I know in the meantime.

What?
As far as I can decipher, you're for bad spelling and grammar?
We don't ask people to get everything right 100% of the time. We just ask that they take that extra quarter second to write "you" instead of "u." Is it so hard to write properly that you're willing to make yourself sound like an idiot. I can understand typos, but seriously now, you're just making excuses for people being lazy. You can say I "pis and moan bout it" as much as you want, but at the end of the day, you are the one who looks like they couldn't get through a fifth grade english class.
