Sooo... Anybody else going? $35 bucks to preregister (http://animeboston.com/registration/). Should be fun, it certainly was in 2004.
Date: May 26 - May 28, 2006
Location: Hynes Convention Center, Boston, MA

Last year's big plus was the new convention center. MUCH more room, and overall the mood was a bit brighter. It seemed to me as though less things were going on though.
Also, the great thing about the new center is that the dealers room is SO big and there is never a line!! (except for when they first open it up)
the hotel itself is nicer too - people dancing in the windows and all.

I'll be there yet again, this time in a hopefully better costume than my last minute attempt at Injuin Enzan (Chaud from MegaMan.EXE).
The Hynes Center is definitely one of the biggest improvements to last year over the earlier conventions. There was so much space sometimes you wanted to stand in line just to know that there were other people there. I'm not about to complain though about the abundnace of space. The pros by far definitely outweight, outclass, and out-whatever the few cons. Plus there's always room for a Photo-Op without elbowing somebody in the face.
Anyways, I certainly can't wait for this one to roll around. See yall there.

Don't be b****in' about space, Frap. I'd rather have a lot of room to move than having to plow through a crowd of angry fans waiting to get into the Dealer's Room (Good times. Good times.)
I'm going to go this yaer and make my return to the Con scene. Who knows? Maybe I'll actually cosplay this year.

You, ma'am, are an idiot. Anime BOSTON is not going to come to Michigan. It will probably stay in BOSTON. Cons don't tour, especially if they're named after the city they take place in.
http://anime-cons.com/events/info.shtml/899 <-- A con in Michigan. Note how it is not named for any conventions in other states.

Well, you've been replying to threads all day with things like, "Oh, I should see this anime" or "Oh, I want to go to this con but it isn't even in my state". Things like that don't really seem relevant to the thread. If you're going to see whatever anime from whatever thread, that's fine, watch it. THEN post about it. You know, add to the conversation or something.
And about the con, you could have just made a thread about anime cons (or the lack of) in your state. I dunno, just a weird suggestion. o.0

Why are you saying this to me anyways? The whole point of this site is to state your opinions and let people know what you know about Anime. Well I sure as hell did! If you don't like what I gotta say then just don't read it. DUH!
But anywho. I will take what you said about adding to the conversation into consideration.........

Kiddies, let's just all play nice and get along, ummkay? :3
I've thought about going to Anime Boston, actually. As a New Yorker, I'm pretty sure I'd stick out like a sore thumb and I'd probably get more than my fair share of ribbing from the populace, especially since it's about two months into the baseball season. But it's also right after my spring semester ends and I might need some cheering up at that point. So we'll see. Maybe. Or I could just save up for Otakon... <.<

I was not the only one that got the impression that you were wanting AB to move to Michigan. You didn't say, "I wish there was a convention in Michigan!" You said, "I wish it would come here!" Well, what does "it" indicate? One can only assume you meant the subject of the thread, i.e. Anime Boston. Cons are not a unit; they cannot be referred to by a collective "it" any more than any other separate organizations like corporations or animation studios.

I'll probably end up coming really early in the morning on Saturday to get a day pass. Then, I'll blow all my cash in the Dealer's Room!
For all of you not familar with the Hynes Convention Center, it's huge. Very, freaking huge. It looks like the whole thing is in one section of the place but I guarentee a lot of people will get lost if they stray without a layout map.. like .. I did.. Yea.

Speaking of meeting up, anyone want to meet up someplace and hang out? My fiance and I will be there. I too shall be wasting away our savings in the dealer's room and Shino Express Sushi over on Newbury St.
And 2 months away? I still haven't done a costume yet... Son of a... Looks like I need to get to work on a costume! Typical of me to procrastinate like this.
Anywho, off to catch up on my anime I've been neglecting (Damn you FFXI) and researching a costume.

This will be the third time I've attended Anime Boston. This time, I will not only be an attendee, but also a panelist. Needless to say, it's a little stressful but exciting at the same time. I look forward to it though.

I thought I had found you last year (or was it the year before? ...last year i think) I went up to a guy who was indeed wearing swanky black stuff with a toothpick in his mouth and asked him if he was Ender. He looked SO confused. Perhaps I'll have better luck this year.
Oh! and this year I'll be cosplaying as Deidara from Naruto, and walking around with a Sasori (my boyfriend). So, look for us. We'll most definitely be at the naruto photoshoot.

You nit pick on me because I messed up on one lil detail?
If you think asking if Anime Boston will ever be held in Michigan is one minor detail, you're dead wrong. Why would a convention named after the city it's held in be held in a different city? If we were talking about a convention like A-Kon, it'd be different, since there's no city in that name. It's like asking if Anime North will ever be held down south. It's not nitpicking, it's pointing out the obvious.
Anyway, I'm really excited about AB06 (which starts one week from today). This will be my second time going and my second con ever (the first one was last year's AB). I'll be going with my college's anime club once again.
This year will rock since STEVE BLUM (Spike from Cowboy Bebop) will be attending. :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

I don't know about ones that light up, but they have fake ones at joke shops and places like Spencer Gifts. They have powder in them so when you breathe out, it looks like smoke. I was going to get those for Mamimi cosplay 2 years ago, but never went through with the cosplay.

Hope to see you all up there. I don't have a plan as to where I'm going to go to first or last, just gonna wander around until something (or someone) hits me. Though Friday morn I'm gonna be on the Registration line with my girlfriend so that she can get a pass. So I might meet you there.
Again, if you spot Ender you win a Ramune. Distinguishing features? Hrm. Black hair, black jacket, black glasses, a cute red-head by my side, and of course a Press Pass that glows swankiness. ^_^
Have fun.

Man, that sucks. Sorry to hear that, AM.
Now, then, Day 1 report!
Opening ceremonies was okay. They showed an amusing "documentary" of anime in the American Revolution. The guest introductions and the like were fairly boring.
Dealer's area was pretty good. There were a lot of mediocre deals ($8 for manga). And, of course, lots of the popular stuff (Naruto, etc.). Meh. But, there were also some great finds. I snagged preowned DVDs of Millenium Actress and Howl's Moving Castle for $6 each. My favorite, though? A very nice Stellvia pencilboard for $5. My inner XEBEC fanboy is quite content. I was considering grabbing the Aria pencilboard I saw for $9 as well, but decided to sleep on it. Oh, and there was the Fafner one I decided not to get since it didn't have the greatest picture. Sasuga Bookstore (I think that's the name, at least) had a rather nice stand. Everything was in Japanese. Meh. However, they did have a bunch of Range Murata stuff (and the Robot anthologies!) that I probably would've bought if it were in my price range. Oh, and some seller was showing Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya on his projector. I had to thank him for that.
I spent a couple hours in the manga library. Got to sit on a comfy chair and read the first two volumes of Aria. Quite fun.
Video gaming room was hot and smelled rather bad (guess why). I didn't spend much time in there. Looked like it was mostly fighting games, plus DDR and a few fan favorites (Halo, SSBM, Katamari Damacy).
I didn't go to all that many panels, since most didn't interest me. I did, however, go to the ADV one. Very amusing. They showed an episode each of Nanaka 6/17 and Kono Minikuku Mo Utskushii Sekai (new license). Meh. Greg Ayres and David Williams answered a bunch of questions, handed out a few DVDs. ADV legal didn't clear Williams to announce most of the new stuff, though. Grrr. I'll hopefully make it to the next ADV panel, since it sounds like they have some really interesting stuff to report. There seemed to have been some hinting at ADV selling downloadable episodes.
I also got to see The Place Promised in Our Early Days. It rawked. Hard. Plus the dubbing was actually quite good.
Cosplaying. Ouch. Way too much crossplay, and it was horribly done. Way too much Naruto cosplaying. If I see one more Naruto cosplayer... bah. I didn't see anywhere near as much Inuyasha cosplaying as at AB '04. There was a lot of FMA cosplay as well. Some Mai Hime cosplay. The one that made my day, though? The lone Mahou Shoujo Tai cosplayer. I commend you, madame. I'm bringing my camera tomorrow and hunting you down.
Anyway, I'm off to sleep. Yay for rambling.
Tyrdium

Today kicked copious amounts of arse. Completely makes up for yesterday being "meh".
First of was the director's panel. Lots of interesting stuff about the dubbing industry from a few ADRs.
Next up, human cosplay chess. This actually wasn't all that great. I did have high hopes for the Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne cosplayer, but these were shattered with her "'Checkomateo!' Errr... not really! I mean, that's my special attack!". Depressing.
I decided to leave the event early and catch the last ADV panel. This ended up getting cancelled, but I needed to get lunch anyway. Yay for mediocre food court Chinese food. Should've gone to Jaffa and gotten a falafel. But I digress.
After lunch, I decided to hit the dealer's area and try to get some good deals. Know how people always say the dealers sell stuff for dirt cheap right before the room closes? Bzzzt. Wrong.
Next up? State of the industry panel! I'd been waiting for this one all weekend, and it didn't disappoint. High-status reps from ADV, FUNi, and some company I hadn't heard of talked about what was going on with anime in the US and where it was headed. One of the questions they addressed was the fear that the anime industry was going down the tubes. This simply isn't true. Turns out that everyone (except CPM) is doing fine. Sales are up, anime is coming into the mainstream, etc. They do see some cyclical growing pains coming up, but note that the industry will come out all the better for it. They feel that the market probably won't be able to support current prices much longer, but that they may have a hard time dropping prices on DVDs. There was talk of a "paradigm shift" to online distribution.
Interesting tidbit, from speaking to David Williams after the panel: ADV generally makes less than $1 per DVD. The retailer takes about half of the MSRP, and licensing tends to be rather expensive.
Last was closing ceremonies. The guests said goodbye, etc. Meh. But then they showed the winning AMVs. Oh. Wow. Each and every one of them was absolutely amazing. Yes, even the Naruto one was great. Seriously, go watch them. They're probably up on AMV.org (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/home/home.php).
And that was AB '06. I never did get to claim that Ramune.

"By using money. Durrh."
"No, I mean like how are they doing it? Wouldn't it be impossible to translate?"
"Well, sure. But, hell, no harm in trying."
"Yes. Yes, there is."
I missed the action this year but I got thousand of texts from my friends attending. Now, I'm fully updated with the anime world and I have a full inbox. I may have spent most of my time in bed, but I felt like I've accomplished something. ^_^;;

Anime Boston was great this year (got to meet Steve Blum and other great voice actors), however, the security staff was on a power trip and pretty much all of the events started late. I think the AB staff needs to work on that for next year.

I don't know exactly what it was, but I felt this year's AB was rather disappointing.
1) Everything seemed cheapo / last minute. While not earth shattering problems, the official AB admin stuff and merch showed laziness. The horrible B/W name badges, impossible-to-read & misprinted schedule, t-shirt, pins, etc. It almost seems like they didn't bother to try wowing us from the get go. Bad first impression.
2) The schedule and the events seemed mismanaged - Getting cutoff at lines multiple times, having some events outright cancled, some panels boring as all hell, some panels seeming to be one big in-joke (AMV How-to comes to mind), and having everything worth going to all at the same time or the ass-crack of dawn.
3) Being lied to - I was told the raffle items were going to be raffeled at the END of the auction. I ended up missing all but 2 raffles by the time I got there at half-time of the event. (not that I'd have won anything with my luck, but still).
4) Security Power Trip - It's a f**king DIGITAL CAMERA BELT BAG.
5) Cosplay - I got more pictures of my hotel room and the 2 Lamborghini's outside than I did of picture worthy cosplay.
The only fun parts about the convention was the Dealer's Room and Artists Alley. Picked up some TransFormers and Pepsi Convoy (sorry if anyone was going for that from MUGEN Toys), some T-Shirts, and my Autobot Tribe Naruto headband. My fiancee and I also got 2 Chibi's done from Chi Studios.
I had a fun time over the weekend, but the convention itself could have used a LOT of work. I'll still be attending 2007, but if it has the same pitfalls as last year, I might not go to 2008.

I agree. Last year's full-color badges were much better than this year's black and white pixelated crap. And that schedule flub is inexcusable.

I agree with this as well. I almost missed Dick and Buster's Hentai Dubbing Extravaganza because of Richard Epcar's Lupin Outtakes, but luckily they switched everything around at the last minute to make the hentai event afterwards. Oh, hey, there's another last minute change right there. And I don't even think they had planned that event originally, I think Richard just asked if he could show the clips that happened to be on his Powerbook's HD and they said, "Sure, what the hell, throw an extra panel on that schedule before you print it."
3) Being lied to - I was told the raffle items were going to be raffeled at the END of the auction. I ended up missing all but 2 raffles by the time I got there at half-time of the event. (not that I'd have won anything with my luck, but still).
Yeah, most of the convention staff had no idea what the hell was going on. That's volunteers for you.
4) Security Power Trip - It's a f**king DIGITAL CAMERA BELT BAG.
Did you happen to run into that guy wearing glasses and camouflage pants? He was a complete a**hole to everyone. He actually had the balls to ask me to put away my DS so I would be paying attention when the line moved. If I see that d*ckhead again next year, I WILL get up in his face. And that's not all he did. I've heard stories. Anime Boston doesn't need to be ruined by some jackhole who thinks he's a big man because he volunteers to work at anime conventions for free.
5) Cosplay - I got more pictures of my hotel room and the 2 Lamborghini's outside than I did of picture worthy cosplay.
Yeah, they should really make a rule that states, 'If the only character you can think of to cosplay as is Edward Elric, don't bother cosplaying at all.' I saw literally 25 Eds in the same hallway at once. Originality was obviously not a priority this year.
Oh, and the hentai dubbing got way out of hand. I know it's 18+, but this is an anime convention, not some college frat party. I'm surprised security (the MCAA security guards, not the AB volunteers) didn't step in to shut down the convention.
I'll attend Anime Boston again next year, but they'd damn well better fix these problems.
EDIT: Yeah, right, how can a con that starts on Hitler's birthday (April 20-22) NOT have any problems?
Tyrdium
05-29-2006, 08:29 PM
Originality never seems to be much of a priority for cosplaying, unfortunately. I did see a fairly good Mahou Shoujo Tai costume, though, so it wasn't all bad.
Also, if you check the Anime Boston forums, you'll see that they were having last-minute problems with the badges. The color ones they had were on the wrong stock and got ripped apart by the printers, so they had to go with what they could get on such short notice.

Originality never seems to be much of a priority for cosplaying, unfortunately.
Ha ha ha.... am I the only one who finds this hilarious?
It's cosplay. The whole point is to steal the look of a character, copy it down to the tiniest detail, and show it off.
The whole concept is the antithesis of originality.

Meh, you have a point. But, it gets rather annoying when everyone cosplays a character from Naruto or Fullmetal Alchemist. It's a different kind of originality, I think. Perhaps originality is the wrong term.

Oh man oh man, I had an awesome time.

Those are my pictures, they are in opposite order, as in Sunday - Friday.
I'm the Deidara from Naruto at the end.
I still have over 60 pictures that I need to develop, scan, and upload, but those'll probably be up late tomorrow night. (so check again)
I tried very hard to find Ender, but always ended up making a fool of myself by going up the the rows of Press people and asking "OKAY?! WHO HERE IS ENDER?!?!" and then receiving really scared looks.
My highlights included Kaiju Big Battel (The referee personally handed me a box of pocky to eat with my hand, - since Deidara has mouths on his hands - I got Louden's autograph, Pablo died :(, I got a piece of a building, and just had a ton of fun overall.
Along with Kaiju, I was fortunate enough to be FIRST IN LINE to the masquerade. I lined up at 2pm, the actual event was at 7. I had people come up to me and shake my hand, while others called me insane. :]
Too tired an lazy to go into more detail about the weekend, but I have to say this: Anime Boston 2006 was the best ever!

I agree, but what you should've said is, "It gets rather annoying when everyone cosplays THE SAME CHARACTER from Naruto or Fullmetal Alchemist."
I think most of the cosplayers just went as Ed for the hell of it. I saw some crappy costumes (some guy used an inside-out AND1 hoodie for Ed's jacket) made by people who probably made them 10 minutes before the con.
