When I'm really bored, and I do mean really bored I draw crappy comic strips in MS Paint. They go under the banner of "Dude Man" and are heavily indebted to White Ninja (http://www.whiteninjacomics.com) (something I make no secret of, heh).

Yeah, they look like ass (especially the early ones) and aren't super-original, but they might (this is no guarantee :p) give you a giggle.

Some of those are pretty funny, i specially like the "Dudeman goes hunting" comic, but some of the stories could use some work because they are to short and sometimes he does look like a cruel bastard(how dare he not let his cat in :( ), but still, hope you decide to posts some more Dudeman stories(wich they kinda remind me of the "Angry dad" comics).

Positive feedback! Whee! :D

Dude Man Goes Hunting is a favourite of many (i.e, two people). Evidently Superman being shot down is great shit :)

And yeah, Dude Man IS a cruel bastard. He's a complete and total dickweed, the epitome of anti-hero. Sometimes people/things deserve his ire, sometimes they don't - but it's really fun thinking up stuff for him to do. I've never seen the Angry Dad comics but I plan to now!

Rest assured more will be on the way at some point, there's still tons of stuff for him to do.

Yay you finally showed off the Dudeman comic. I remember you showing me on those MSN long ago and acually looked back at them a few weeks ago.

PS: I believe JOJO is talking about Angry Dad from the Simpsons that occured in one episode. Homer doing stupid things and gets angry easily in comic form.

These remind me of scary-go-round(www.scarygoround.com) both in their wackiness, and extreme britishness.

Funny, and the writing is definetly way more important than the art, but if you wan't it to have some more mainstream appeal, you will have to A. Get some art lesson's or B. Find someone to draw it for you, and just write it yourself.

I honestly think if you made a website and started displaying this comic publicly it could be popular.

I can draw all right, I just lack a scanner - if I didn't they'd definitely be hand drawn :) I'm certainly going to look into though. I'd never thought about their extreme Britishness 'til now, but I'm glad to hear it nonetheless!

Honestly though, the thought of it "going mainstream" never really crossed my mind. I just thought of it as a silly distraction to briefly amuse my friends, but I'm pleased to see it being so well-recieved here.

Well... Looks like Mr. Critisism himself will give the first real negative feedback.

First of all, it's been done millions of times by other people. Making a crappy looking paint comic isn't anything new or exciting. If you're going to make something like that in paint, make a sprite comic, at least those are colorful and funner to look at in general.

I, personally, don't find any of the comics (Including that hunting one) very funny. I'd ask somebody else to help you think up gags for it since your gags are so bad. Plus, if you're planning on keeping this type of artestry, you're really gonig to need good gags to overcome that art. Heck, several of those comics looked like they weren't even TRYING to be funny, like the 2nd to last one you made.

But, meh, nobody listens to me anyway.

Well to be honest I never professed this to be anything else than a silly diversion, certainly nothing new or exciting - that was never the intention. I didn't wake up one morning and think "Trem, you must revolutionise the world with a new and exciting comic drawn in Paint!". I'm not all that keen on sprite comics either, a bunch of wisecracking pixels isn't my thing.

This comes down to a difference in sense of humour. To be honest, I don't find your sprite comics funny - that's not to say they're bad or they have bad gags, they just don't really make me laugh. Evidently the same goes for you with mine, which is perfectly fine of course because they're not going to appel to everyone. But please don't say I should find someone else to think up the jokes because they're "bad gags" because obviously people in this thread have found them amusing. My comics have a more surreal, offbeat style of humour as opposed to out-and-out quips and one-liners and are therefore more of an acquired taste.

But as I said earlier in the thread, I'm not serious about them or anything, they're just a mild distraction and really my whole world isn't going to fall apart if someone doesn't like them. Thanks for the criticism (seriously), but I think I'll carry on making them as they are.

I would certainly hope not. It's just that when somebody makes a comic, I'm almost obliged at this point to barge in and talk about it in great length.

I'm not all that keen on sprite comics either, a bunch of wisecracking pixels isn't my thing.

Um... What do you think your comic is? It's a sprite comic with giant, odd, non colored sprites. When I said sprite comic, I meant something more refined, like my colored ones.

This comes down to a difference in sense of humour. To be honest, I don't find your sprite comics funny - that's not to say they're bad or they have bad gags, they just don't really make me laugh. Frankly, I normally don't like the opinions of "peopl that type like this with no senmblance of capitulizatin or puntuation and bad speling"...

And I figured you didn't like my comics.

And I see your point with the "offbeat" humor, and I never said that the gags sucked, I just think they aren't the best ever.

But as I said earlier in the thread, I'm not serious about them or anything, they're just a mild distraction and really my whole world isn't going to fall apart if someone doesn't like them. Thanks for the criticism (seriously), but I think I'll carry on making them as they are.

Owch UZ, hey Tremolo, don't let him get you down man, I think they are funny, besides, the humor is more British and you sort of need to have a special sence of humor for that. Dancing Guy, aka Mr. Geoff will be returning very soon I've just decided. Not sure why but I'm sure I can bullshit something.

It depends on how how complex the strips are. If it's a bunch of talking heads, about 10 minutes, it it's more in the vein of the suicide one, then about twenty to thirty minutes.

British people obviously have an enlightened type of mind to get this type of... is it legal to call it a joke?

It works on many levels and is opened to literally thousands of interpretations. More complicated than Evangelion, seriously. :XD: I'm just working on the principal that not all comics have to have a blatent joke attached to it. That one is silly and pointless and induces "wtf?" reactions as opposed to amusement. Or something like that... my theory has holes :D

I do think you're picking at nits a tad here. Plenty of comics aren't in colour - ones in the newspaper for instance, quite a few online ones and of course the obvious example: manga. I mean, I can't imagine you writing an angry letter to a newspaper regarding the cartoon's section saying "NEEDS MORE COLOUR". Actually...

Well, though I'm not a particular fan of this "Dude Man", I still have to point out that UZ criticising anyone else's sense of humour is idiotic. If UZ has EVER made a funny comic, I have yet to see it, and I think that his sprite comics are truly horrible, bottom of the barrel stuff. "Dude Man" floats somewhere a little bit higher in the barrel, and has even managed to elicit a few small laughs from me.

Apologies for the lack of new strips. I've just moved to university so it's all been a bit hectic settling in and such. There'll be some new crap up soon.

I think now after the recent posts I should pretty much reinstate my mission statement.

I do not take Dude Man (I mean, fer chrissakes, what kind of a name is THAT?!) seriously at all. There's no artistic pretension behind it whatsoever. I honestly find it hysterical that UZ rips the artwork to shreds when I am completely aware that it looks like shit, it's not supposed to look like anything else. These are mild distractions, I don't put my heart and soul into them and I won't have a hissy fit if people don't like them. They're sily, boredom-plugging distractions, nothing more. But I'm glad people seem to enjoy them, and as long as they continue to do so, I'll continue to make them.

Two-twenty's really "got" what they're supposed to be. I'm glad. I would say "I wish UZ would", but honestly I find his schtick hilarious.

If UZ has EVER made a funny comic, I have yet to see it, and I think that his sprite comics are truly horrible, bottom of the barrel stuff. "Dude Man" floats somewhere a little bit higher in the barrel, and has even managed to elicit a few small laughs from me.
UZ, lay off. You get your panties in a wad when people criticise your garbage comic, so sit your ass down.

Oh, I'm sorry that I have offended the goddess of humor.

To each his own, Leigy. To each his own. I'm sorry that you don't like sprites. I happen to not like hand drawn paint stuff. So lay off on me.

I don't think it should matter if it has sprites or otherwise, as long as it provides a good laugh.

The "suddenly getting hit by a car" gag has been use to death by now, but it was still funny. And why is it that Belgians are the only "colorful" people on the comics?

Tremolo
09-23-2005, 06:35 AM
Since you don't see the finished comics as anything worth troubling about, maybe there's something about the process that you enjoy and which keeps you makin' them Dude Man comics.

Oh there is. It's addictive, I guess. As I say, there's no artistic factor behind any of it, but they are pretty fun to do.

I'm wondering how the titles relate to the creation of each strip. Do you think of an interesting-sounding title first and then use that as inspiration to create a situation, or do you create the situation first and try to think of a fitting title? Or do you just start drawing, and you come up with a title to describe what's happening at about the same point you yourself come to some conclusion about what's happening?

It depends. Sometimes an idea bobs about and I apply a title to it. Usuallly however, the title tends to come first. Part of the fun about the silly, long-winded titles is that they're just that. In many ways, I'm trying everything possible to make Dude Man something of an anti-comic in the sense that the jokes are strange, or there aren't any jokes at all, or they're horrendously obvious. It's a way of seeing how people respond to different things - like the Laurence's Art one or Dude Man Is An Expert, there's no real joke behind it and yet (some) people still find it funny but don't know why they do.

It's just that the comics aren't nearly as good without the titles, since the titles usually act as a primary or secondary punchline.

No one's ever said that before :) Ta for that new perspective!

The "suddenly getting hit by a car" gag has been use to death by now, but it was still funny. And why is it that Belgians are the only "colorful" people on the comics?

Exactly, that's why I did it! And I have no idea...they just are.

Well, I find these to be better than another, actually popular rubbish comic(White Ninja). Some of them are a bit stupid, but others actually are pretty funny. And I can definitely relate to that "Da Vinci Code" one. These obviously are not meant to be great, and by those standards they work. Some of them do frighten me a bit though, such as "Dudeman Copes With Suicide." I guess it's just because seeing someone hanging always horrifies me.

Whee, I'm glad someone commented on the new look. As you can probably guess I'm taking Dude Man into considerably darker, more twisted territory in an attempt the move away from what essentially began as a White Ninja tribute strip. I hope people will enjoy the changes, although whether future installments will provide genuine "lolz" remains to be seen.

But it will be still be WTF-inducing, it will still look weird and it'll still have the same characters...only somewhat more ****ed-up.

I'm not too sure about Dudeman's new "hunchbacked look ", it will take me a while to get used to that, and the art style now reminds me a little of that "Cute little dead girl" comic(forgot the name of the girl). Its kinda the same Dudeman we all "know and love" only much darker.
