Modest Mouse - The Moon And Antarctica, really an awesome album, there isn't a BAD song on it, while obviously some are better than others. I'm particularly fond of the base line in Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes and everything else about the song. Other favorites from the album are 3rd Planet, Gravity Rides Everything, Different City, and Paper Thin Walls Although as I stated they're all very good songs.

Jewel - Goodbye Alice in Wonderland

I really like this album. After the pop-styled disaster that was 0304, her previous release, Jewel totally makes up for it by returning to the style of music that made her into a serious artist. I can honestly say I like every song on the CD. Particular favorites are "Again and Again", "Long Slow Slide", and the titular track, "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland".

Gotten a few new discs over the past few weeks:

Saw these in a second hand shop, and since they were cheap I decided to pick them up:

The Gershwin songbook A compilation album of several George Gershwin songs, I got it mainly for the Rhapsody in Blue. However, most of the material is 40's-50's big bands.....and I'm not a big fan of that period of big band jazz. And the Rhapsody as played by Glenn Miller was slow and bordering on boring. I like the piano concerto version much more. Still, there were some good tracks on there.

At Last by e-Type Jazz I have heard this name before, where I don't know, but it's a nice little album this, very easy listening stuff.

And feeding my habit for traditional folk music from my donor countries with budget discs!

Songs from Eastern Europe as played by Maros traditional folk orchestra I elaborated on the title a little, as all the songs are actually from Hungary, and it's more akin to operetta rather than folk music. Still, it's a good listen, but not the kind of more intimate small group stuff I like.

Edelweiss I picked this up because it was filed under Austria/Germany, but it's actually Swiss (found that out when I was trying to find the name of the band). Not bad, I'm not a huge fan of yodelling, but I do like Swiss accordian.

Plastic Tree - Träumerei

Got this through the old letter box today. Was delighted to learn that all the singles/b-sides released prior to this album that feature on it have all been remixed and sound even more amazing - it's like discovering them for the first time. Owning this piece of solid gold genius is way better than relying on shitty 128KBS-encoded MP3's that don't even have the correct song version. My favourite album from my favourite band - roll on June and their new album :D

I guess my first and possibly last CD purchase happened a few weeks ago. But I wouldn't really call it a direct purchase. When I bought the PS2 game Atelier Iris 2, I got the free soundtrack since I was one of the first few people to preorder it. So yeah. It's the only CD I've ever owned, and it's a freebie. Or maybe not, since it technically came with the purchase.

Before I begin...I'm a bit musically obsessed. I love learning all I can about bands and who they influenced and who influenced them and I will ramble when I go on about these CDs I purchased. I do think being a music journalist or historian could be a fitting career for me.

Don't read if you don't care, but you might learn something.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium

I find it much better than the last two efforts, By the Way and Californication. A lot more of the funk sound is back. Flea and John Frusciate are as amazing as ever, if not better. It's real sharp sounding. I think I prefer the first disc, Mars, better than disc 2, Jupiter.

Public Image Ltd. - Second Edition

For those unfamiliar with PiL, it's John Lydon(AKA Johnny Rotten) of the Sex Pistols's second band. Unlike the Pistols, PiL was a post-punk band. The lyrics and music being much more involved and complex than the Pistols. Second Edition is fantastic, bassist Jah Wobble is one of the finest out of the 1980's. Keith Levene is also a great guitarist, which many other alternative bands using his style as an influence onto their own. Sometimes Lydon's voice is...well, annoying, especially when a few songs can drag on for too long. But the music itself is undeniablly great.

Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation

Hell and his Voidoids aren't the most known punk band from the 1970's punk explosion, however they were one of the most talented(yes, Punk has talented musicians, believe it or not)and influential of the genre. Blank Generation is also the name of the title track, and it perfectly fits the enitre mood of late 70's punk and the genre for many decades afterwards. Hell himself, with his messy, tattered, "Devil may care" looks and attitude, created the entire message of Punk, and almost no other punk album carries it so great as this one.

Since Suncoast got bought out by FYE (this was one of the darker moments in history), FYE is closing all Suncoasts near another FYE location. So Suncoast was selling all their albums at 50% or more off last week.

For the price of less than one CD, I bought:
1. Fiction - Kajiura Yuki
It has some Noir music, some Hack//Sign music, and some of her own stuff. It's really fun to listen to each song and try to identify the language it was written in. It's been in my car all week.

2. Noir OST 1 - Kajiura Yuki
I haven't seen Noir yet (at least not more than two or three episodes), but I know a few of the songs off of it. So I knew that the CD must rock.

Before that, I think the last few CDs I got were all Israeli. From most to least recent, they are:
1. HaMachaneh HaMishotech [The Common Denominator] - Gilad
I'm taking a leap of faith on the spelling of the Hebrew title; sorry about that. :sweatdrop Anyway, this was one of the guys from Shotei HaNevua. Those of you who go to American universities might recognize thier name from when they did an American tour of schools in the fall.

2. Madafim - [I]Beit HaBubot [Dollhouse]
Really good guitar music. Has a Spanish or Latino influence.

3. Metropolin [Metropolis] - Metropolin
There's a song on this album titled "Yapan" [Hebrew for Japan]. Since there's very little crossover between Israel and Japan as far as culture goes (with the exception of Pokemon, Powerpuff Girls, and DBZ), I thought that song is pretty kewl.

4. Michapshim et Dorot [Searching for Generations] - Shotei HaNevua [Fools of Prophecy]

5. Shotei HaNevua - Shotei HaNevua

Siouxsie & the Banshees - The Best of

I'm really huge into the late 70's-80's post-punk and goth rock scene. I love it. Siouxsie is probably one of the most innovative and best of all the groups from the said era and genres. Their music spreads from the simplist of three cord punk to even a hip-hop type groove(like in the song Peek-A-Boo). The album definetly is a best of, showing all the things the band did. Personal favorites include a cover of The Beatles - Dear Prudence, and their own stuff like Spellbound and Cities in Dust.

Blur - Blur: The Best Of

Always been a fan of britpop and bands like Blur, Oasis and Radiohead. I own some of the other two already, so I figured a nice way to start with Blur would be with a compilation. It definetly has a wide variety of tracks, starting with two of their most famous ones, Beetlebum and Song 2. It's got 18 of their finest, and I'm just in love with Damon's voice and Graham's guitars. Utterly fantastic for all who dig good and original alternative rock.
