View Full Version : Your Voice

An interesting topic came across me and my group of friends the other day that dealt with how when you speak you hear a certain voice but when you record yourself speaking and then listen you hear a different sound in place of your voice.
I'm usually surprised by how deep my voice is when I watch recent home videos copared to the higher less masculine voice that I hear in my head.
What are your thoughts on this and since most of us dont know how each other sounds, explain how your voice sounds in your head and how it sounds to opther people.

Well on both sides im quiet and low toned , but able to understand what im saying but other around barely understand me since i can jumble up my words mixed with my low tone.

Weird topic, but what the heck.
When I hear myself speak (in my head), I sound like I have a bit of a deep voice. I never thought there was a difference, until one day my friend recorded me talking (I didn't know), and I heard myself. OMG, I sound like such a girly girl. My voice is pretty high-pitched, at least that's how it sounds to me. That, and I found out that I talk kind of fast. Not jibberish or anything, just... fast.

I have a general low voice outside my head but when I hear myself talk inside it's sorta...well...medium so to speak.

in my mind i sound like a boy because i have a low voice. then when i speak you can hardly hear the sound of a girl. then when i sing to me i sound really good then after the recording it sounds bad.
I've got a theory that the recordings and phones and stuff actually make your voice altered and sound bad. Proof is when you hold your hand cuped to your mouth and aiming it at your ear. Then talk or sing and you'll hear an annoying note from whenever you speak, this happens due to the same note being played at the same frequency meaning there really is no differance between what you hear and what people hear.
So, conclusion: ALL RECORDING DEVICES, PHONES AND SO ON HAVE SOMETHING THAT KILLS YOUR VOICE.
^_^
EDIT
i talk fast it's not even funny
my mom is my translator to people who can't keep up XD

But Veraca-san. When I hear another persons voice in the same recording as mine they sound the same as I hear them regualarly.

I have a deep voice against, probably in the baritone range. I also have a good range of false voices that include a singing David Bowie, Wakko from the animemaniacs and Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys. I've been told I do a good impersonation of Brad Garrett's Robbie Barrone voice from Everybody Loves Raymond (since that's not his real voice) although I don't like it.

Not true. Listen carefully and you'll hear a slight note change.

I'll have to try it... But other than that the change cant be to off.

Not too off, but it's enough. And it's hard to hear the note change of the other person unless you listen very closely and then have them talk next to you.

I imagine my voice as calm and strong, but nothing aggresive or rough. My voice once recorded sounds like a friggin' Disney character on crack... not even a cool Disney character... like Lefou from "The Beauty and the Beast" uncool.... that and when I get excited I tend to go super-high pitch... I suck.

I've got a baritone voice for a male. But while singing I can hit the suprisingly low notes for my Bass 1 range. Your brain makes it hard to process your own voice, that is why it sounds wierd.
i'm a bass singer for choir... so i guess my voice is low.. but i also sing tenor too........ so i'm midrange sometimes. but most the time a little on the low.......

I tend to hear myself quite a bit higher in tone than I really am. That isn't helped by the fact that I usually try to soften my voice when I speak to others, since my usual tone range can make some people feel I'm angry or hostile.

I also hear myself as having a higher pitched voice than I really do. A girl I babysit said I sounded like the girl who sits in for Padme as Queen Amidalla in The Phantom Menace. I never would have said that. Also, when I sing, I don't think I sound too bad, but if I tape it... i cringe.

When I sing I sound horrible to myself... I wonder if I sound good on record
Dirty Harry

I listen to recordings of myself singing only when I want to put myself through some intense pain... currently on my computer I have myself singing "Beat It", "Under Pressure", and "Unchained Melody".... they are all horrible.... but I do love listening to them and laughing at myself while crying...

When I speak I hear a midrange tone, almost to the deeper side, but people say my voice is actually quite high. When I hear a recording, it sounds deeper than I hear myself! So maybe I have three voices? I don't know! A few people on AA have heard me speak, some know/met me in person (Soundchazer is one of them ;)), maybe I'll make a recording or something and let you decide. I used to have a video up of me goofing around with the computer but it's gone now.
I'm a very animated person, so my speech is very dynamic as well. I guess I don't have a "normal" range for my voice. When I was in chior, I was a 1st Soprano though (the highest pitched vocals). I started Alto in 6th grade... then went up to 1st in 8th - 10th year. So yeah, very dynamic.

I wish I had a higher voice but what can I do about it.
Find that video, I want to see it.
I can't find it, I said it's gone. - Rittles

My voice sounds fine to me, but when I hear recordings it just sounds annoying. The same thing goes for my singing I believe. It sounds perfectly fine to me, but I don't think it sounds all to great to everyone else. I think it might have to do with the fact that when you hear your own voice you probably feel the vibrations of your voice throughout your entire head which probably amounts to some distortion, but I could be entirely wrong.

Junko if you're not going to say anything useful then dont post.
I dont sing in a choir but I've been told that I should. I've also never had that problem with the changing voices during puberty. It came naturaly apparently.

My voice sounds so wussy when I hear it on a recording. Maybe that's just because it's so drastically different than what I'm used to it sounding like. No one's ever said anything to me about it, but maybe they don't want to hurt my feelings because they assume I am wussy or something. @_@
Interestingly enough, my voice fluctuates all the time. I'm a voice actor by trade (even if I never really make any money off of it), and so I'm constantly slipping into different dialects, accents and vocal ranges for no particular reason. I do a mean Shaggy impression (from Scooby Doo), and friends tell me my Gilbert Gottfried impression is bang-on. The hardest thing about impressions/creating new voices is that you have to allow for the difference in what you hear and what sound is actually coming out. It's something I've gotten used to over the years.

That means you're good at it. Different languages sound different, and ideally so should you when speaking them.

I tend to hear myself as being on the deeper side of midrange, but when I've heard recordings of myself, it tends to be lower than I hear it, and I tend to mumble somewhat.

Does anyone actually like their recorded voice more than their normal voice? Everytime I hear myself recorded on anything I always cringe at how bad I think it sounds. It's like when your speaking your brain 'glamorises' your voice or something, when I play myself back not only do I sound weird but I hear like every little lisp, tone error and mispronunciation. Then I spend about ten minutes wondering how other people actually hear me :migrane:
My voice is deeper in my head than it apparently is really according to mr microphone. I played around with an audio program and found that if I down the pitch by about 4 or 5 percent then I more or less get how I sound in my head.

No one turn this into a perv-fest, just because of the "pull hair" comment. :bnono:

My voice is so deep and masculine that only Vin Diesel, James Earl Jones and Mr. T themselves can decipher what i'm saying, in my true dialect.
Regularly though, my voice is sorta low, much so that I often have to speak higher up than I usually do so people can understand what the hell i'm saying. Also sometimes monotone depending on my mood or who im talking to, and I guess you'd say I speak in a very british-londoner accent, not so much c0ckney or street, although I do use slang so you sometimes have to perk up your voice for that.
Besides people not always understanding me though, I can always imitate some sort of deminic figure, which makes doing metal vocals easier for me to do, as well as taking the piss out of the bands who overuse them just for the sake of it. I also rememeber doing some voice acting for EsEsJay oh so long ago...

Hmm, well I didn't notice the Mexican accent you first told me about. ;) Not soft, not low, not high. It's pretty much in the middle, and very clear sounding.
It has been awhile since we met so it's going off memory from almost 3 months ago... lol.

Well, I think memory works best.
About the clear sounding part, ain't that the truth. My mom used to whisper to me a lot when I was a small kid because she thought I might have a hearing problem since I have always had a loud voice, and she just wanted to see if I did that to hear myself talking.

This thread is cool. Sorry about necro-ing but come on, it's a cool thread.
My voice sounds a little gurff but at the same time high and girly. Not shrilly high but you would know it was a girls voice if you heard it.
In my head, it's a little bit deeper. I guess i don't really know since it isn't to much different from my normal voice.
