I have a sorta mixed legend here.

Anime Otaku comes from my love of Anime and TV animation over Manga.

My name happens to be "Dirty Harry" because I had bought the movie on DVD the day I joined, and even though my usual screenname or forum name for that matter is DampeRIP, I just decided to go with something new, and so far I haven't regretted it, sans one "Is that like a gay Harry Potter?" comment....

Ha, I don't even think I should be posting here, since the origin of my name is pretty obvious...
Anywho, sohryu is the last name of my favorite anime character of all-time, Asuka from Evangelion. It also happens to be what I named my Blaziken in my Sapphire game.
(yeah, I know, it was a torchic and a combuskin before it was a blaziken, blah blah blah)

Saya-biki(sayabiki)-Scabbard Movement
example-basic draw/horizantal draw(japanese term....searching....not found)
When you draw the sword out you move the saya(scabbard) out to the side. It would be parallel to the floor and behind you.
Next you get the blood off(chuburi, I won't go into how to do this properly) and move the saya just below your naval.
Place the sword blade upwards and move the saya(pinky rides the belt/tie(for hakama). Remember to turn the blade sideways while moving the saya. The sword falls in the saya, turn the blade upwards while moving the saya to meet the tsuba(handguard). Now move the saya(and sword) back to it's original postition on your hip and congrats-you just did a complete sword draw w/ sete noto
I know that may have been confusing but that's Sayabiki used in a basic draw

Mine started with my cosplay... I went as Shino from Naruto (yeah, I know, another Narutard), last year to Manifest. And right about that time while I was constructing my cosplay I started to get into to online forums as well... and I just sort of stuck with Shino... Matrix was added because I love the movies and I thought there might just be Shino's already existing (duh, we're in an anime forum).
ShinoMatrix... not literal translation, but I like to think of it as meaning Death Matrix... :XD:

Two-twenty
05-29-2005, 02:55 AM
I've found in the two-ish years I've been posting here that this is the most consistently asked question. (Hell, even I made a thread like this once that was closed after one post because there was one just like it halfway down the page! :P)
Anyways, here goes again:
"Twotwenty" is a nickname I got in high school. In the school i went to there were two types of PE, compulsary and elective. I took both, and unlike compulsary PE (where you pretty much just chucked a footy around) in elective PE you were actually graded on how good you were, hence, you had to give it your all. Now I am a very physically fit person but I have the hand-eye co-ordination of an orange, so when we were assessed on ball sports like rugby or netball I of course had to give it my all but I ended up looking like I should be participating in the special olympics.
My friends of course found this hilarious and every time I got the ball they would shout from the sidelines:
"GO TWOTWENTY!!!!!"
or just simply
"TAAAAAAATWENNAAAAAAAA!!!!!"
After a while I wondered why the hell they were doing this and they explained to me that everytime I get the ball I give it 220% (double 110%) but still achieve nothing!
Thanks guys. ¬_¬
I was still in high school when I registered my account here, and this was the only non-lame name I could think up. I kinda like it though, it's sounds very secret agent-ish and I suppose it does sorta reflect my personality a bit.
Once again, there you have it, and once again:

Sorrow-kun
05-29-2005, 05:44 AM
The origins of my s/n began way back in high school when me and my friend were huge Metallica fans. He was Puppetmaster, and I was sorrowharvester. So, that was what I was known as on the internet until about sometime early last year when I began looking for a new name after I noticed that, in the IRC channel I hung around in, I was the only person whose name began with a small letter, and my name was ridiculously longer than everyone elses. So, I became Sorrow-kun, mainly due to my newfound appreciation of Naruto, and my respect for Sasuke constantly being followed around and adored by an annoying pink-haired girl who would constantly cry out "Sasuke-kuuuun, Sasuke-kuuuun!" The "Sorrow" part stayed so everyone still knew who I was. In retrospect, it's a pretty silly name, but it's part of who I was/am, so I doubt I'll ever change it again.
(And no, Naruto was not my first anime. I'd been an anime fan for just on a year at that stage.)

Basicly back in May last year; I discovered how to finally get fansubs so was into it. Had an pobsession for FMA days before it got licensed and didnt know where to get the rest. I feel liking joining the forums here and lazy to get creative so named myself "Elric". Usually I have a different identity evertywhere else I go, so I dont use the same name twice. THough I watched all 51 episodes and not as obsessed with it aas before but a great series still.

In case you don't know, people get bloody sick and tired of the same topic propogating with several threads when one is enough. For sanity's sake, I hope one of them gets stickied and becomes the main "omg, whar did u get ur name?" thread so that threads like this one can be avoided in the future. Nothing good ever comes out of multiple threads on the same overdone topic.
For the record, I would have thought Moe had enough common sense to see that there was at least one, if not two active threads on usernames within the past month or so. I guess I gave him too much credit.
I nominate this thread (http://animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18453) in Miscellaneous as the catch-all for all future username origin inquiries. For any mods that happen to be listening. :)

I, for one, disagree with the main point that flash was making. Personally, I don't agree that it is always better to post in an existing thread, especially if it's an older thread. As far as I'm concerned, threads die for a very specific reason: because no one's interested in discussing the topic anymore. And once a thread reaches the second and third page, it really shouldn't be bumped again.
I think too many people treat forums as an archive for opinions. My personal view on forums is that they should be a place for discussion and debate on various issues. If I wanted to archive my opinions, I'd go start a live journal or something like that.
Too many topics on these forums get made which are along the lines of: "What is your favourite so-and-so" or "What would you do if so-and-so happened to you". They're not interesting topics, no one reads what other people have to say, and people generally post in them purely to raise their post count. I mean, since I've been here, I've only started three threads. I'll admit, one of them was slightly newbish, but the other two were genuine attempts to start discussions. And they both turned out that way. People would actually make efforts to read what other people were saying, and respond with their own views on a situation or issue given by the topic.
In my personal opinion, if people took the attitude that newbie threads just aren't worth replying to, they'd get flushed through the system quicker and wouldn't be such an annoying problem. But, I hardly think the attitude people should be taking towards newbies is: go post your opinion in this existing thread that hasn't had any activity for weeks, and is 17 pages long, with virtually zero interaction between different posters, except for the odd "I agree" here and there. Edit: As far as I'm concerned, these threads should be "flushed through the system" as quickly as possible as well.

Sorrow-kun, let me first offer my thanks as well as my awe for that post of yours. It's one of the most well-conceived and well-written arguments for any topic of debate I've seen here. I can only hope my devil's advocate response is able to measure up to even half the quality of yours.
I agree with you on the point that forums should be a place for discussion and debate. I think they should also be a place to find friends and people with mutual interests. Real in-depth discussions with everyone reading what has been said and using that as springboard for their opinion while also having fun doing it would be the ideal way to go about these forums, wouldn't it? But alas, it's not to be, not with a forum of this size.
Your point on threads dying is very well put and I agree that they die primarily since no one is interested anymore. But once in a while, when an older thread is bumped by someone who actually took the time and thought to read it through and post a coherent opinion, then the discussion might be rekindled. This doesn't happen very often, but it will occur occasionally.
As for existing threads, such with such wonderful topics as "Why did you choose your username" or "Why did you join AA?" or "How did you find AA?" I think they're total rubbish, because as you said, there is usually no interaction between different posters. But I realize their neccessity, despite all the crap that's posted in them. Some people have a nigh uncontrollable desire to make their opinions known, regardless of how other people will take it. These threads serve that purpose, to satiate the needs of those people to just post for the sake of posting the thread. In a more perfect world, there wouldn't be people like that and discussions would actually mean something. But it's not a perfect world and there will always be people who post for the sake of posting. These threads minimize the damage by keeping the inane banter in one centralized location. I don't like the idea any more than you do, but if I had a choice between a newbie posting in an existing thread that's 17 pages long with zero activity and a newbie creating a new thread with the same exact topic and having that go for another 17 pages with virtually no interaction between users (much like the pre-existing one), I'd choose the former option.

Sorrow-kun, let me first offer my thanks as well as my awe for that post of yours. It's one of the most well-conceived and well-written arguments for any topic of debate I've seen here. I can only hope my devil's advocate response is able to measure up to even half the quality of yours.Thank you. I really appreciate your kind words (no sarcasm, I'm being sincere). I also appreciate that you took the time to read and consider my post and the practical approach you've taken in responding to it.
I was originally going to respond to each of the points you raised individually, but then I thought that it might be better to respond to your post as a whole. The main problem I have with these 17 page threads that are continuously being bumped from months ago by newbs is the fact that they're 17 pages long in the first place. And, it's not really a surprise that they get this big. People see these types of threads simply as a +1 to their post count. I mean, here's an example of a very recent thread, where people know full well that the only reason they're posting in it is to increase their own post count, and that it's highly unlikely that anybody is going to read, consider and respond to their post. (http://www.animeacademy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19352) It's always the same thing. The initial post is always "Hey newb, you should have posted in this other thread" followed by several other posters who are, very likely, just repeating exactly what they said in the previous thread. And this thread will probably get well over 5 pages of posts unless a mod decides to lock it first.
It's not like you can blame these posters though. Hell, I've done it before. Everyone has. And why not. The idea of the forum is the reward people for making contributions to the community (with CTs, graduation, avatars, etc, etc). And that's a fair enough idea. Any forum administration wants a healthy community, and a way to ensure that is to reward people for contributing. However, under the current system, this is done by counting the number of posts you've made. And, unfortunately, that number under your avatar will always rise by one, no matter how inane the post you've made is. And you can't be accused of spamming, since you're still obeying all the rules. You're on topic. You're not flaming. You're not being an idiot or anything like that. It's just, the topic of conversation is boring and serves no one. No one is wiser for having experienced the thread. No one has a new insight into a certain aspect of what has been discussed, or the people who have taken part in the discussion. On the whole, it's a very unrewarding experience.
Unfortunately, it's unpractical to try to come up with a system that gives extra rewards to people who are making real contributions to the community. Especially considering the concept of what a "contribution to the community" involves is a very subjective thing, and would differ from person to person.
My personal idea (yes, of course I have one... I wouldn't be making this post if I didn't) is introducing a "sage" command. IIRC this is the third time I've alluded to an AA sage command. People can sage the thread if they disapprove of the topic and, if the thread has a certain number of sages, it can no longer be bumped (for argument's sake, let this number be ten). Obviously, this may be all well and good in theory, but giving such a power to the entire community will only lead to it being abused. So, I've also got some ideas for a few anti-abuse measures.
Firstly, the obvious one is, if a person sages a thread, he loses the ability to post in it again. This will prevent someone from simply saging a thread ten times in a row in order to kill it off instantly. But, to encourage him to make the sage, he will still get +1 to his post count. The second anti-abuse measure is that each person can only make a certain number of sages each day (for argument's sake, let this number be two). That way, people will think twice before trying to sage threads that don't deserve it. The third anti-abuse measure is that you need a certain number of posts before you can make a sage (for argument's sake, let this number be thirty). This might seem elitist, and anti-newb, but the reason I'm saying this is that, if someone wishes to make more than two sages in a day, he can simply make a new account and sage away. However, if he needs this account to have thirty posts, the effort required to make the thirty posts probably wouldn't justify the two extra sages he'd get, and the account would probably just get banned anyway, since any admin that saw a person making thirty posts in a day would be a fool not to ban him for spamming.
Unfortunately, this would probably never happen. For starters, it's probably either very difficult or impossible to impliment such a command into a vBulletin board, so no one would probably be willing to undertake the project of coding it. And also, mods would probably oppose it, since it would see power being taken away from them. It would also make their jobs slightly harder, since if a spammer so chose, he could go into a saged thread and spam it to increase his post count, while being completely invisible to the mods, who are only monitoring active threads. I'd suggest the possibility of locking saged threads, but that would take away even more power from the mods, so they probably wouldn't be amused by that idea.
Also, some would argue the sage command may disencourage newbs from joining the forums. To survive and grow, any community requires an influx of new members constantly coming in. If they're just going to have their threads saged every time they make a new topic, they're probably going to leave very quickly. My responce to that is, let the intellectual discussions that will arise as the dominant topic-type be the honey that lures the new members. Unfortunately, not everyone on the internet is on the same intellectual plane that we are.
So, I can't see the admins adopting such a system, since it probably isn't in their best interests. I do hope that people take this as some food for thought, though.

You know what though, "insert pointless answer to pointless question" threads will always exist. The most feasible solution would be for the literate members of this forum to simply abstain from these threads, whether it be to rebuke or to just post. Let the people who appreciate simple one word answers and +1 posts of post count have their fun, and let the rest of us have ours. Since post count is utterly irrelevant anyway, who cares if the top 10 posters of the forum got their via sheer inaneness?
The only problem with this idea is we're short people who are willing to come up with discussion topics, the fact that good discussion topics are well, hard to come up with, and once they do, tend to get bumped off the first page due to the lack of people willing to place sufficient effort to propagate the conversation.

Shai_Lupin
06-21-2005, 10:26 AM
the origin of my name? lets see i believe the first part resulted from a name i often used in fanfction that i wrote in my yonger adolecent years....then again i used the name 'shai' (i pronounce sh-ay but most pronounce it 'shy' ) in a novel (ok so it barrily consititutes boarderline on novela, but any ways) i wrote ...wich has yet to be published much to my chargin T_T...and 'lupin' was a prodect of a RPG I was in taking the last name in 'wedlock' so thus came 'Shailian dahilia Lupin' the equivilent of shai_lupin, a nick i've been using for years now.

I was going to abstain from this thread, because I swear that I posted in one of the 2 that Niner put links to, but do you think I can find it? Noooooo.......Either that particular post got deleted, or I am blinder than I already am, or the origin of name thread that I posted in is even older than the 2 Niner found. That or I was dreaming when I did it, and I'm pretty sure I don't go sleep surfing.
Anyway, for those who care and haven't read my reasoning before......
My shortened name is Tom. And I heard the song Space Oddity by David Bowie, which contains the line 'Ground control to Major Tom..something somthing and engines on.' And since I have an interest in military stuff, and the name flows, well there you are.
Just so this is not entirely convoluted spam, I tend to agree with Niner more than Sorrow-kun in regards to old threads. Generally, leave an older thread alone unless you have something more to contribute to the discussion.

Just so this is not entirely convoluted spam, I tend to agree with Niner more than Sorrow-kun in regards to old threads. Generally, leave an older thread alone unless you have something more to contribute to the discussion. That was, to an extent, the point I was trying to make (minus everything you said after the "unless"). Too many old threads get bumped from oblivion by just flat out stupid posts. What I propose is that, if you really have something amazing to contribute that everyone can appreciate, you can almost do this just as effectively with a new topic as you could by bumping a thread that's had no activity for over a year.
Oh well, this is just part of my unrealistic fantasy of doing away with newbs and spammers.
The origin of my name stems back to my obsession with computer games, Max Payne being one of my favourite games, naturally my name had to come from here so basicaly my name comes from the character Vladimir Lem from Max Payne and Max Payne 2.

Legend Saber
08-01-2005, 08:54 PM
Kind of a long story, here.
I remember back in 2000, when I encountered AOL for the first time, my dad let me have my own account on it, even though I was only... eleven, I think. Anyhow, I needed to come up with a username, and, for lack of anything better, I just came up with a parody of my last name, which begins with the letters Kat. I think my name was Kat... something. Eh, too long ago to remember. Anyhow, people used to always confuse me for a girl, and it annoyed the hell outta' me, so when we got AOL again in 2002, I wanted a name that sounded distinctly masculine. I figured I'd put some type of deadly weapon in it, and the first thing that came to mind was "Sword." I was also loved the word "Legend" back then, for some odd reason, and decided to put it in there with the sn. So I typed in "Legend Sword," but it was taken. So, not discouraged, I picked the next bladed weapon to come into my head, a Saber. And there you have it, "Legend Saber." I used to join up to forums with all sorts of names, Legend Sword, Legend, Final Path, Final Fantasy, and about a hundred others, but nowadays I join everywhere with good ol' "Legend Saber," and I still use that same AOL Account to this day. I donno', Legend Saber's just stuck with me, and I'm known as that just about everywhere I go.
KidKolt
08-01-2005, 11:36 PM
"KidKolt" came from a lack of availabilty for the nick "BillyTheKid" back when I used AOL. One of my friends suggested a different cowboy, and so the name stuck. I have used it ever since.
Niner
08-02-2005, 12:43 PM
I swore I'd never add to this, but I guess it has to be done. At the behest of one of my friends, here goes.
'Niner' is a truncation of Rogue Nine, my moniker at my very first forum. It's from a series of Star Wars novels that I was into when I was younger. As the years went by, people got to know me and just started calling me Nine or Niner. The 'breaker' is just because it sounds cool. I use it when Niner has already been taken.
So there you have it.

hekikuu
08-02-2005, 08:22 PM
My name has some geek anime origins. I love the song called Blue at the end of the Cowboy Bebop series. The lyrics begin, "Never seen a bluer sky." Hekikuu translates to blue sky and sounds a bit more masculine to my American ears than aoi sora does. I think the Japanese might agree with me; the name of the female protagonist in Kaleidostar is Sora. I've never actually heard the word hekikuu used in an anime.

My name is one of my many real-life nicknames... this one just happened to be in my mind when I created this account
My name is Mana, though not from Mana of Malice Mizer as most people think xD; Though, I love him, too. The Mana of my name is from Takahashi Rumiko's manga the Mermaid Saga, still one of my all-time favourite manga to this day ^o^
I had a name before Mana, but I can't remember what it was x_X;; It was switched to Mana on the boards after I was on IRC with that name for ages.
I've been considering changing my name again, though. I can't use Mana anywhere else, since it's such a common name and is taken. On other boards, I always go as either Lucia, or Kirie. I might change, but then again, with teh modness, it wouldn't be too appropriate, I suppose.

Windborn
09-16-2005, 08:22 PM
Well... Windborn was actually a product of my attempt to find a shorter username that didn't have any affiliations with anything other than my own personality. I'd been using an elvish name for my fanfiction.net profile, and suddenly realized that most of my fics were anime-related, rather than Lord of the Rings. So gradually I phazed out all of my elvish names (Feaedhel, Elwing Silme, Mithaiwe..). I chose Windborn because...well...I'm rather obsessed with the wind. If I explain entirely I'll sound insane, so that's the most you're going to get.
So, Windborn - Child of the Wind.

My name? it's really very confusing. See the first part came about one night when i had this really weird dream that later turned into an idea for a manga, anyway in this dream there was this boy who was sealed in a painting and for some random reason he was called Tenus (dreams eh? go figure). Anyway so that was the first part of my name, i later added the last part to make it a full name. I got that part off of a star wars name generator that i came across, translated my name and bam there it was, a surname for my character. So after that i just used it on lots of forums and stuff and here it is today. Wow what a boring tale

I go by several different names online just to be purposly inconsistent but for the case of Anime Academy I chose Darlene in honor of my favorite character from the 90's TV show Roseanne.

The Geomancer

Well, it's because it's what my character class is in a MUD game called "cleft of dimensions". it's like necromancy, except for where the power is drawn from.

This name is a name I got from World of Warcraft, it was going to be Kensuke (Japanese name, also the name of Shinji's nerdy friend, making it even more suiting)but I was teird when I made this acount.
ryamano
01-16-2006, 08:34 PM
Last name's Yamano. Kanji for it are the one from yama(mountain) and no(plain).
My grandfather's family used to live in a reaaaaaally small island in Japan as farmers. Then, in the Meiji era they finally got the privilege of having surnames, so they, like 90% of the japanese population, decided to have a surname relating to
a) mountains
or
b) fields of rice
So, my nickname is my surname with the letter "r" in front of it.
Syner

my brother was in a clan for Soldier of Fortune II called sYn and I just thought that name was cool and all. And another part was from Drowning Pools Sinner song.

Dimesion 12
01-27-2006, 07:50 AM
eh, I used to have the name "Cowboy Bleblop". I thought that it was just going to be one of those things that i do 10 posts and you never see me again. Well i started to get more interested and before i know i'm up to like 250. I couldn't stand my name, so i got it changed.
When i got my name changed i wanted it to be "Dimension 12", but i accidently spellt it wrong and wasn't paying attention to my spelling error, so now i'm "Dimesion 12". I just came up with the name out of nowhere, now my name sounds like a disease.

after reading (most of) that REALLY long thread...
It always gives me a kick to listen to how Two-Twenty got his name... even funnier when he actually tells it in person (sans small droplets flying from mouth)
This topic seems to be encompassing more people than the other "how did you get your names topic" so I am assumeing (assumption being the mother of all F ups) that this is the one to post in
also in saying that i'd remind older members (being a perspective from a new member) that it is kinda hard to know how "old" a topic is before it can be revived. i have seen topics in huge forums have topics that a revived after 6 months or even a year... and generally most people either ignore the post or just flame them.
Also remember that some people... no matter how hard you try... will never use that search function.
Erm my name
used to use another name for playing games online when i was young (i mean really young the name was Reploid) and after taking a hiatus from some games i came back and decided to give myself a new name. being into bodyboarding for a while i named myself after my favorite move, and Invert and called myself Inverted.... that was kinda long and silly and eventually it got shortened down to Verty
SAD thing... most parents of the friend i know do not know my real name and i get called Verty in real life
EDIT: and a fair few friends call me Verty rather than my real name (some honestly forget)

PerfectDeath
02-17-2006, 01:40 PM
PerfectDeath... well this is a name that took me a while to get.
I started out with Rik cause of the games i played at that time (old 64 and Genesis years haha)
then i began to try and find out some cooler evil names... all that good stuff. DeathMaker, BlackDeath, but then (maybe perfectdark influences :P ) i came up with PerfectDeath though i wasn't thinking about perfctdark :/ rather i was finished watching Gundam Wing... Common nickname is PD.
But u guys wouldn't care about that nick.
My nickname that my freinds call me is my Last name cause i had 2 other freinds with the same first name as myself... along with 4 other people in school <_< .
Darkdreams
02-21-2006, 07:07 AM
My name, I write poetry every now and then, and I am very cynical towards man-kind in general(I know, great way to feel about my own kind) that I usually make the sky the dreams of man. Or in other words they always reach for the sky, but can never reach such a lofty height that it is but a dream. Then, because of optimistic attitude I decided on dark dreams. Lovely isn't it?

My name, Remedy, came from someone I knew off of a PC game called "Myth: The Fallen Lords." In tactical games like that, or any highly competitive online game, you want a name that strikes fear into your opponents before the match even begins . I played Myth for like five years so I pretty much beat everyone, but one day I met someone online named Remedy. I thought that was a pretty cool name. It further accentuated the name's coolness factor when the guy raped me :thud:, so yea ever since that day the name stuck and now I've been using his name as my own, lol.

Shinomori Aoshi of Rurouni Kenshin fame. No interesting back story as to why I chose the name, I just think he's one of the coolest characters in anime

All of you must know of Dragon Ball Z. You should also know of Trunks and Goten doin fusion and making Gotenks. Mine name just come from the other type of fusion, the one where they use the star earings. No one would have every guessed, huh? Sinomori can you explain?:help:
I thought I covered it quite well, but alright: This won't make a whole lot of sense if you haven't seen the show...
Shinomori Aoshi is a bad guy (well, kinda) from Rurouni Kenshin. He was the leader of the Oniwa Banshu until his men were killed, after which he went a little nuts and vowed to defeat Kenshin in order to obtain the tile of 'strongest' for his fallen compatriates. After Kenshin beat him - and lectured him on the error of his ways - he slowly reverted back to his old self.
I like him so I used his name, hope that clears things up

Angelic_Ruin
05-20-2006, 08:38 AM
Well my username kinda popped in my head when I signed up for myspace and it kinda stuck...But I believe the main reason why I choose it was mainly because it sounded ironic. Angelic sounding good or heavenly and ruin sounded bad and demonic so I put it together or something like that. But the main reason was that it just sounded cool.
Sakaki Onsei

You know, I'm pretty sure IG-88 didn't appear in The Empire Strikes back. In fact, I'm pretty sure he's only ever been in EU Star Wars material.
Jedinator

You do catch a glimpse of him in A New Hope as I recall. He is just walking down the hall. Also you fight him in Star Wars: Shawdows of the Empire.
It is very possible that he is in Empire. Because there is the part where vader is talking to all of the bounty hunters and bosk gets all pissed off at the one imperial dude that says "Bounty Hunter? We dont need their scum". I dont remember seeing IG-88 though. I'll have to watch it tonight.

I think I remember seeing IG-88 there. Checking around online seems to confirm my memory.
Anyway, regarding my screenname...
I've had variants of "Yoda" as my screenname in online forums as far as I can remember (the year 2000, to be exact). It was originally "Lord Yoda," since I originally contrived it while playing a text-based online game (called Monarchy, later renamed to Canon) where you were the lord of a fief. Also, I liked the insinuation that Yoda was really a Sith Lord.
Yoda was always the most respected character of the Star Wars series. I guess I must have wanted to inheret that respect from him. No one talked smack about Yoda. Even to this day, I honestly believe that a person's screenname becomes a huge factor in many people's first impressions of you. It helps if that first impression can be linked with someone of greater repute.
Anyway, that was years ago. I (quite recently) decided that it's time to change the name, especially with the renewed attention that Yoda is receiving with the new movies (since Episode 2). I didn't want to be seen as someone who just "jumps on the bandwagon." So, I redeliberated regarding the name. The stimulus for this reconsideration was probably the Hack//SIGN series. I got the feeling, more and more, that each character had their name for a reason. Inspired by the character of BT (I really like the way that she got her name... those of you that have seen the anime will know what I am referring to), I figured that it would be worth it to think of a name that would be a bit more... original.
I'm sure many of you are familiar with the manga Yotsubato (reseased in America as "Yotsuba&", since the "-to" suffix literally means "and"). It's Kiyohiko Azuma's "new" project, after Azumanga Daioh. In light of the painfully long amount of time ADV is taking to release the next volume of that manga (or any other manga, for that matter), I figured that using Yotsuba in my screenname would be a good way to revitalize what has become such an important character in my manga life.
"Yodatsuba" is just a mixture of "Yoda" and "Yotsuba," as I hope my signature graphic is clear to display. I left the "-to" in the name because I figured if I can associate myself with the manga (Yotsubato) as opposed to the character (Yotsuba), I retain some of the gender-neutral status (so people don't assume I'm a girl). =Þ
:bellyemot (wow... I never thought I'd actually get to use this graphic...)
Despite these changes, I still prefer to go by the name "Yoda" on a more informal basis. It's a much shorter name, probably easier for most to pronounce, and (as I have explained) I have gone by that name for much longer. Once in a while, my real-life friends that played that old text-based game with me (once upon a time, six years ago...) will still refer to me as "Yoda" in real life. Though it's rare.
Anyway, if I may dig up an old post...
Oh this is easy. I got my nickname from my friend. (It's from my real name which is Miranda). She called me MirMir or sometimes Mir beacuse she thought my name was too long and she didn't want to keep on saying my real name when we played soccer so she could recieve passes faster. Ahaha. Yes i have weird friends but it's a cool nickname that I've had for a long time.
I have to say, I'm impressed. A name that is purely for a utilitarian purpose. You don't see that very much in the world.
Mr. Otaku
06-13-2006, 03:18 PM
I did a charity pro wrestling show as Mr. Anime in high school. Then, after learning about being an otaku, I changed my gimmick to Mr. Otaku but I got booed out of the ring after people thought I was anti-Animerican (I'm not).

Milkymagic
01-19-2007, 03:46 AM
My name was inspired by combining Tokyo's "Milk Club" with a little anime wistfullness by adding "Magic" randomly at the end.
I also pictured what a weird ball-shaped magical sidekick to a schoolgirl would be named just to make sure it fit my concept.
I originally was just going to call myself Anti-Blue Hair just to parody anime colorations.
EMY23-23
01-19-2007, 07:41 AM
My name is my full initials with 23-23 at the end (unfortunately I forgot the reason behind the 23-23). I've had that name since my first day on the internet. It used to be my 2nd AOL email address and screen name. In the past I've also used TrixXxter (Xbox live name) and Dosage on other forums.

Le Bread
01-23-2007, 08:20 PM
Originally the name came from a little known manga called Steam Detectives, and was the namesake of a teenaged Moriarity type archvillain. He was even the character featured in my very first icon. At the time, my fandom for detective stories was at it's height (though it still thrives in little ways to this day). The fact that most of my favorite foods are grains didn't hurt either.
Of course, once I took to IRC, the name kind of took on a life all it's own.

My name comes from a nickname I was given by my friends.
Zashiki-Warashi
01-24-2007, 02:25 PM
I picked up the name from a character from the xxxHolic series. After research, I found out that zashiki-warashi's protect a persons home and bring good luck. I've been using it on forums for awhile now.
Minnie
01-24-2007, 08:00 PM
Minnie is a homonym of the word "mini". I changed my name to it because I'm short and small IRL. Yharsh, simple and lame excuses are WIN.
Minnie was also the name I used for a baby RO character I had. (Thought it was befitting and all) At the time, everyone and their grandmother was using Chibi-this and Baby-that for their baby characters, so thought I'd be damned if I follow THAT shithead trend. I was just surprised no one had thought to take the name already. >_>
ParakissNoda
01-26-2007, 12:24 PM
My name came from one of favorite mangas Paraise Kiss added with Chichiri's from the Fushigi Yugi manga's famous word No Da. And thus this name was born.
wheelman286
02-07-2007, 04:21 PM
I've had the Nickname "The Wheelman" since the beginning of high school... my best friend gave it to me because of my apparent driving skill... especially under pressure and my ability to get places quicker than any of our other friends and somehow driving more safely then them in the process. I was also the only one with a liscence at the time of our tight knit group... so i always drove. 286 is just my birth month and year 2-86:eyebrow:
note: i actually consider myself a meager 6 out of 10 for driving skill... but my friends say theyd rather go off a cliff with me behind the wheel than someone else because they think i might get us out of it somehow... ha.. yeah right
mantha
02-10-2007, 09:02 PM
it's also my real nickname. ^-^ i hate my full name "Samantha" for it is too girly for my personality. @_@ besides, people call me by my full name when they are exasperated with me, or anything to that effect. XD
and no, it didn't came from "Manta" of Shaman King, thank you very much. o.o;;;
Sanda
02-16-2007, 04:36 AM
MY name here is my online nickname... in the net I always use this name and when I want to sign my drawings, I use this name as well.
It comes from my name: Alessandra... I took out the "r" out of Sandra and used only Sanda.
My mom called me San and I got the idea from her way of calling me.

Anyways... My name is Alexandre Santantonio de Lyra. I sign my drawing as Alex San Lyra. I also use Alex San Lyra in forums, online games, etc. My AA nick was originally going to be just Alex, but a girl named Alex had taken it already... so I put in the full artistic name.
People some times call me ASL... which has given me some trouble in the past. Some people thought it was Age Sex Location. Defenetly NOT the case! XD
I just put my nick-name. I skimmed throught the forums and saw all the cool names and couldn't come up with one myself. So I just went with plain old Angi, short for Angisel, which I really don't like.

Considering this is my first post since joining yesterday it seems a great way to introduce myself. My name, IceDemon, comes from thinking up a great name for Starcraft in the old days. I have been using it since for Warcraft, CS,CS:S, etc. Those are all pc games, which I have played and I still play CS:S when not watching anime or doing something else. I guess I'll keep it forever since I have so much history with it and thats my reason for using this name. If anyone has questions for me feel free and ask away.

My name originated because I have the odd habit of murdering breakfast-cereals. Take that, Cheerios! Also, Paranoia Agent and Serial Experiments Lain are my favorite animes. So I took the "Serial" from Lain and used the description of Lil'Slugger as a mass murderer. Um, yeah.
Welcome to the site, IceDemon! I'm not new here but as you can see, I haven't posted much yet. =)

From a book (http://tinyurl.com/22gfx5) in which my namesake hacks into people's computers, gets all their personal information, then kills them.
I realized a while afterwards that the name is pretty lame and I considered changing it, but by then I had been using it too much and all that stuff. It just wouldn't be the same! Besides, I didn't want to pull a Nomad, now. You know who you are. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/Ph4t3/Emot/emot-v.gif
On second thought, replacing 'f' with 'ph' in 'fate' is the epitome of cool. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/Ph4t3/Emot/emot-c00l.gif
I've considered changing my name, but I can't imagine the mess that that would make.

What??? Don't ever do that!
In this forum you're known as "Mana"... as in THE Mana... not just another girl called Mana.
Don't you see how special that is? ^_^'
Yeah, I know, hence the mess I mentioned. I just don't use it anywhere else but here, and so I feel it's gotten stale.
My original name on this forum wasn't Mana, either >.>;

Yeah, but then I could call you "The artist formerly known as 'Mana'" which would be so funny! :D
Thinking about name origins always gives me memories of when I looked up my own name on google and found another Milkymagic (with an "ss" at the end) who was female on some other website (http://www.lovehappens.com/profile/u734089565.html). We are of no relation, though we are the same age, oh yes!
Another existed on Live Journal (http://milkymagic.livejournal.com/113003.html), in which there's no relation, and the results this time are much more amusing (http://milkymagic.livejournal.com/114504.html) (anime avatar? hmm). Also female.
Did I feel like tearing my eyes out? Kind of, but I understand that even in the wake of cool names and imaginations thereof, I know the name that was chosen for myself has fit my personality. It still makes me curious to speak with those other Milkys, but that's something that's best left in the back of one's mind.
Milky, someday you should ask Roark how he met Aznvampgirl.

it's the family name of Ritsuka & Seimei in Loveless.
being very much obsessed with this series, it seemed the logical choice.

Well you were just telling us the origin of your name but I took a point from it. That laughing=love, i agree with this becuase laughter is a way in which to calm down a situation, usually done when someone thinks something is funny, or generally when the person is happy. A person who can't laugh at the little things in life will never be able to deal with the big things or enjoy them. Laughter is essential I think to a person's happiness which is also part of Love.

Oh, okay.
I've always been a firm believer that if a couple is not able to laugh together (or not even a couple, but friends, or anybody in a relationship with anybody else for that matter) then they cannot be in love. Thus laffnizluv.

But whether or not you want to trust Babelfish, a translator that makes Borat look like an English major, is up to you.
EDIT: Oh, and it's Italian, if you're wondering.
