If anyone was a fan of the short OVA produced then you may be happy to learn that there is a live-action movie translation in the works. If your a fan of James Cameron that is. There's not much information, but here's the link to prove validity.

Ok, that sounds like a horrible idea, but maybe it won't turn out that bad.

"What will fun fruity roll-ups roll out with next?"

This is such a bad idea. I thought I had heard the worst when I found out WETA was making an EVA movie for 2006.

Actually I do think Battle Angel Alita could make a good movie(it's short enough that they could leave the OVA version mostly unmolested), much better than a long confusing show like EVA could.

But then I saw who was directing it: James Cameron. Remember people this is the same man who made the Terminator movies, who made titanic, who made Aliens, and who made Rambo 2. I just don't see him doing this well.

Old news, but interesting news.

James Cameron is a massive anime fan apparently, but that doesn't mean he'll do a good job necessarily...but who's to say he wouldn't? I'll most likely see it anyway.

But then I saw who was directing it: James Cameron. Remember people this is the same man who made the Terminator movies, who made titanic, who made Aliens, and who made Rambo 2.

The first two Terminator movies are classics, Aliens is the best of the Alien series and he didn't direct Rambo 2, he wrote the screenplay. As for Titantic...no comment.

Hmm...interesting...however, before I see this, I need to see the ORIGINAL Battle Angel Alita first...

I heard awhile back they want Jessica Alba (Sin City, Darkangel) to play Gally.

Yes, but why were they remembered, not because of their plots, their well told stories, their subtly developed characters, they were remembered for being badass, hardcore, over the top, awesome, Sci-Fi movies.

Battle Angel Alita was great because of the action, but also because it had such a deep and interesting story, with GOOD characters to boot.

Ya I rest my case.

In passing, Dark Angel has pretty much turned me off to anyhting he will ever make from now on.

I think it'll work if she got back her black hair from Dark Angel, then it could work.

OMG... I'll probably end up watching this only because of Cameron... Just as long as it doesn't end up like this :lightsabe everything will be fine.

Aliens is the best of the Alien series.
No. Alien is the best of the series. It is a masterwork of suspense. Aliens is nothing more than a sci-fi shoot-em-up.

It was pretty godawful really, heh. I can't remember being entertainted by a single episode of the show ever.

Yeah, they ARE very different films really and for better or for worse (mainly the latter as the series progressed) each director brought something different to the franchise. It's all a matter of taste which one is regarded as the best and its always split between Alien and Aliens - and I prefer Aliens, although they're both great.

And just a general question - in an ideal world who would you rather have direct Battle Angel?

Here's how I see it. The OVA didn't get far.. But a movie would more then likely get major fanboy approval. [Note: I know this thread is quite old..]

The manga was a piece of art. A scifi masterpiece. If you've read it, you know..

If an american director was to attempt to do this James Cameron is one of the top few directors I would want doing this title. He is very qualified to do this (I did not enjoy titanic as well as most people did, but I still think it was very well done. And the Terminator and Aliens are classics.

Also, I am very hopefull that this Battle Angel will be based on the manga (Gunnm) which was increddible, compared to the OVA which was very short. The info on IMDB seems to corroborate with my hopes.

Battle Angel Alita was great because of the action, but also because it had such a deep and interesting story, with GOOD characters to boot.

Yet, I think a talented Sci/fi suspense writer/director like Cameron is needed for such an action oriented film as "Battle Angel" would be. The quality of characters in Gunnm are very good, yet they are not so complex that a writer/director of Camerons caliber could not capture the nessesary qualities on film.

I think Gunnm would need to be Badass/Hardcore more than it would need to have a high quality plotline (Odd coming from me, one who enjoys drama more than action movies normally.)

Edit: Yes Dark Angel was bad, but I never hold a directors worst works against him because almost all of them have flops.
ewww: I just read on IMDB that Cameron with be CGing alita while the rest of the cast will be live action. The only time that ever worked was in "who framed roger rabit?" this just severley dimmed my hopes of enjoying this movie.

The info on IMDB seems to corroborate with my hopes.Well, that would be much better, as I didn't care for the OAV at all, personally. Nowhere near as deep or interesting. I think they could do it, too. True, they couldn't do the whole manga, let alone Last Order (now *that* I want to see...), but I could see them easily getting up through Zapan and the Berzerker body without trouble. Then, if they do a sequel if it does well, they've got Den, Nova, and the AR-series left to cover. That'd be my ideal plan for the movies.

The quality of characters in Gunnm are very good, yet they are not so complex that a writer/director of Camerons caliber could not capture the nessesary qualities on film.I'm more optimistic. I think he can at least do a good job of it. The key is trying not to fit too much into the movie. Do the bits that matter, namely a lot of emphasis on Jashugan (earliest character who's constantly a motivation later on). They could do it if they don't try and go through all nine volumes in one movie.

I think Gunnm would need to be Badass/Hardcore more than it would need to have a high quality plotline (Odd coming from me, one who enjoys drama more than action movies normally.)I don't see why they need to be mutually exclusive. Plot and action can be meshed very well, as the manga proves.

The only time that ever worked was in "who framed roger rabit?" this just severley dimmed my hopes of enjoying this movie. How would that work? There are other cyborgs in the series, a lot of them. They'd need CG'ed as well. How else would one to Makaku? Some CG and some live action wouldn't hurt (especially since she wears clothes over the robotics a lot), but to only do her like that would not work at all.

I've been putting off reading the manga for years. Everything I've read about the story makes me believe it would lend itself well to a short, gory, violent thrill ride. But does the manga have a good storyline and characters?
