Title: Eiken
Genre: Romance/Comedy
Company: J.C. Staff
Format: 2 OVA
Dates: 2003
Densuke just enrolled at the exclusive Zashono academy. He's eager to participate in extracurricular activities, but he never expected to join the mysterious Eiken Club. Strangely enough, every other member is a busty co-ed, and many of the clubs activities involve bikinis. But Densuke isn't interested in anyone but the shy and beautiful Chiharu.
Grade: 39%
Highs: Big, beautiful, bouncing, uhh..... tomatoes; sharp animation
Lows: Ludicrous circumstances; "What just happened?"; If this is ecchi, where is it?
Being the ecchi-loving person that I am, I wanted to give this title an honest try. I figured this would be a Love Hina (http://www.animeacademy.com/finalrevdisplay.php?id=293) clone, just at a school instead of a house, and on a "bigger" scale. Boy was I wrong.
On the surface, this anime seems like a good buy, but after you watch it, you'll wonder why you spent an hour on it. The story, if you can call it that, begins innocently enough with Densuke starting at a new school and being drafted into the Eiken club....and it goes downhill from there. The characters are one-dimentional and uninteresting because of the lack of character development or background. The members of the Eiken club compete in various school tournaments that would seem absurd to Belleview patients.
Now it IS possible to have an enjoyable anime without a plot (Di Gi Charat (http://www.animeacademy.com/finalrevdisplay.php?id=71)), especially if the story suggests some ecchi. One guy + many extremely well-endowed girls = huge ecchi potential. However, nothing is seen at all. Everything is only hinted to, talked about (briefly), or covered by clothing. Talk about false advertising.
Probably the best thing to come of this anime is an April Fool's prank on ANN, which can be found here (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature.php?id=208) (scroll to the bottom). The hype greatly outweighed the end result and I was left unfulfilled and empty. Unless you want to own every piece of ecchi out there, skip over this one.
