View Full Version : The Best Rpg Ever!!!

What do you think is the best Rpg ever. Personnally I think THE ELDER SCROLLS 3: MORROWIND is the best. Only because I like to have an entire country to roam around in, and I just like choices. But I do believe the fighting in MORROWIND could be alot better.,

Im not too into the more hard core, traditional RPGs out there.

I gotta go with Suikoden 2 and 3. They have to tie for me for the best RPGs ever made. The story, battle systems, characters, and customization just rocked. Even the bosses were good challenges. Although honourable mentions do include Skies of Arcadia, FF7, and Star Ocean: The Second Story. Oh and for Online RPGs, Phantasy Star Online ver 1 and 2 for the Dreamcast takes the cake.

Earthbound, first and foremost.

Following, in no particular order.

Super Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi, KOTOR(and it's sequal),Chrono Trigger, Breathe of Fire 3

Unless I can include action/adventure RPGs....If I can...

Castlevania: Symphony and Aria
Zelda: All but CD-i Zeldas
Metroid: All
Kid Icarus: Both games
Fable
Morrowind

2. FF9 (A classical time machine to the good old days. I gotta get me it again)
3. Super Mario RPG (The first game I ever game a 10 before Super Mario 64)

After applying the errata and various clarifications that have come out, I'd have to go with Star Wars d20 as the best system out there. The flexibility of the system is amazing, and really lends itself to cinematic approaches to play. Characters can be fleshed out completely different in the same class. The skill based approach to almost all aspects of the game works well, and the mechanics don't seem to get in the way of the story as much as other RPG's, while still being fairly comprehensive.

Now, if only they'd make more books...

I have a tie between 3 RPG's actually. i would say the three best ever are Super Mario RPG: The Ledgend of the Seven Stars, Final Fantasy 7, and Tales of Symphonia. I absolutely fell in love with all three of these games to the point that if owned Tales of Symphonia and FF7 i would be playing them constantly as i do with SMRPG. Quest for Glory (formerly Heros Quest), I, II and IV deserve special mention for creating good plots along decent gameplay. These are pretty old school now, back in the day when VGA was hip and our bubble bubble game had CGA graphics with internal speakers.

Baldurs Gate 2 is one of my favourites, but they could have made it better still, like by giving the thief class more interesting missions - I thinking like actually given missions to go to X and steal Y (like in the Quest for Glory games)

Fallout 2 seems to get the balance right with the implementation of 'Perks'.

And Disgaea certainly has to be mentioned as well for its excellent script and dialogue. The games not half bad either.

I think you misunderstood me. I'm saying that VII may be a little better than VIII, but VI was much better than VII. I don't know why you wouldn't have heard of VI, unless you were too young to have owned a Super Nintendo. In my opinion it was the highlight of the series. Definitely worth checking out if you do have a SNES.

i just finished fable and it was frickin awesome. I was addicted to it for a while but it got boring after i beat it. It took me 11 hours to beat the game and that includes most of the side quests. Only if they had made the game longer. They should think about making a fable2 and just make it like fable but in a different location and adding a few more things to the game.

You need to be shot and killed. Just because it has voices doesn't make it a good game. FFX2 also had voices and that's probably the worst final fantasy game on the planet. KotOR had voices and was a much better game than FFX.

For me this is easy. Without a doubt it's Fallout for the PC. Fallout isn't just the best RPG ever, but it's my favorite game ever. It was such a fresh look at the RPG. I mean you don't have the magical wizard, princess or drawfs. It's post nuclear war, west coast, dessert setting with guns, gernades, and sledgehammers. Also it probably had one of the best sense of humors for any game I've played. All around great gameplay, style, story, just great everything.

Even though Admiral Ackbar is from Canada.. I gotta agree with him on this one. I dont know if I would go to the extreme and indicate that death should come of you.. but voice acting is the least of importance (to me that is). However, I did like Final Fantasy X.. and I'm not too sure if many other RPGs for the PS2 came without voice acting. Tales of Symphonia for Dreamcast/gamecube has voice acting and thats pretty damn good too.... but they still didnt compare to some of the classic RPGs without voice acting such as FF6 and FF7, Secret of Mana.. to name a few.

I thought the voice acting in FFX was retarded save Auron who was a badass either way. Tales had good voice acting, and even though the story kind of felt like a FFX rip off at the beggining, I think it turned out to be a helluva lot better, that and the gamplay was just more interactive.

TOS>FFX IMO... even in the voice-acting department which as said isn't really that important but in some cases it REALLY does help, ex. Kingdom Hearts (Billy Zane is the man) and Tales of Symphonia (Scott Menville, I love you man)....

Please don't :biggun: ....

I never said that it was a good game just because it had voices, I just said that it was the first FF game that ever got spoken dialogue. It had good graphics, fun gameplay, the story made the game that more interesting, and the ending is one of the saddest of all the FF :whine: , like it or not, FFX is the best FF on the PS2 and i'm not the only one who thinks that.

Ha, that's quite funny. Doesn't have much to compete with, considering the only other FFs on the PS2 are FFX-2 (this easily won the award for worst FF ever, thank you for the cheezy Britney-speares-with-guns-and-swords concept), and FFXI, of which is an MMORPG, not only making it rather difficult to compare with but frankly, I have yet to really play it.

Neither F in FF stands for fun. When a game becomes a chore to complete then that isn't fun, and the recent trend of FF games is that they become a chore to complete; thus they are lacking in fun. If this game is actually fun the the FF will stand for Finally Fun, because I've been looking for a fun Final Fantasy since FF6.

As long as gamers still want to play RPG's, then FF will never die, they practically defined the genre on the first Nintendo sistem.

Admiral Ackbar

What? Final Fantasy was a surprisingly successful game by a dying company that kept them alive. FF2 and 3 were never released in North America and actually were not that good. One game most definitely can not define RPG's on a system. If anything the two Legend of Zelda games were more defying of the NES than Final Fantasy.

Zushio

Actually, while FF2 was less than stellar FF3 was excellent and was probably the best of the FF games on the NES. If you're looking for defining RPGs however, look at Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest, the first console RPG and the most popular RPG franchise of all time.

You know where it's at man. That game kicked serious ass. And the sequel was equally great. Little more perverted but a lot more humour. The only problem was that the combat system could be a little slow and unbalanced at times.

I've actually been playing Final Fantasy 6 through Final Fantasy Anthologies, and it's the first game I've had since Final Fantasy 7 that I can't wait to play when I get home (I usually don't think much about games unless I'm playing them). I'm at school right now, and the first thing I do when I get outta' here is playing Final Fantasy 6, lol.

What you said about the other Final Fantasy's is true, too, I don't think there's been a great one since VII, and there hasn't been a good one since IX. My opinion is pretty unorthodox, though, most people take the stand you took and and say the last good one was VI.

Actually most people say the last good one was VII, but a majority will admit that VI was better. So my opinion is also unorthodox.

I feel like most people anymore haven't even played VI. Or at least the outcry of the VII fanboys drowns out any remaining recognition of VI. I agree with the general downtrend since VI though. I actually liked VIII better than IX, which I think is contrary to popular opinion. I would have liked X better than IX, except I thought the sphere grid blew and it felt like there were only 6 enemies in the game with endless palette swaps.

Probably not a popular opinion in these parts of the Intarweb.

I liked the return of the job system, and the movement during battles was pleasing on the eyes. But other than that, it was kind of a sh!tty Final Fantasy.

Hey, does anyone know when the new Morrowind game is coming out. I've heard some rumors but I'm not sure.

I think Shenmue II is my favorite old-school RPG but have any of you played Dues Ex Invisable war? Now THAT is an interesting game.

Allow me to give some advice. Despite the holy grail of anonymity and lack of editorial contraint that is handed to you by the miraculous interweb, your words will hold a lot more weight and your opinion will be given that much more respect if you take those few more seconds for an extra keystroke or two for proper grammar. It's rather annoying having to look over a post a second time due to a hazy coherency, and many, if not most people, won't give a post even a glance should that poster ignore any/all rules of english, or whatever the vernacular language is.

Your sentence was nearly as ill-constructed as his, grammar maven. And learn to spell "grammar" if you're going to insist on criticizing it in others' posts.

Ah, I just can't get enough of "my grammar sucks, but it's better than yours" posts.

I haven't played FFTA (I got Fire Emblem instead, I wasn't disappointed), but I thought the original on the Playstation was great. What's that one on the Game Boy like, anyhow? Because FFT was one of my favorite Strategy games on the Playstation, and if the portable version is even half as nice, it'd be a great purchase for me.

I would usually avoid canibalism as a means of disposing of a corpse but in your case I would make an except because nobody human could possibly call that game the best RPG ever.

If you loved Fire Emblem, you'll love FFT too. It has almost the same kind of fighting, but a great plot and item choice as well.

Oh and for Online RPGs, Phantasy Star Online ver 1 and 2 for the Dreamcast takes the cake.

i agree with suikoden 3, i loved this game and i did everything there was to be done in it. also some of my other favbs are FF4, chrono trigger, chrono cross.

Let's See
1.- Fallout
2.- Fallout 2 (what?)
3.- Arcanum
4.- Planescape: Torment
5.- Ultima Underworld

Some honorable mentions:

System Shock 2: Although this game is easily one of the best role playing games, with great pacing, story, and atmosphere, the lack of characters to interact with hurts it. I realize it is intentional, to force you deeper into the character and story, but still it's a drawback in the roleplaying respect.

Baldur's Gate: Great games, just a matter of personal taste left them out of the list.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Same thing as with BG.

Oh, and I shouldn't forget Vampire: The Masquerade. While it's not perfect, nor the best roleplaying game published, it is still the first and only P&P RPG that has hooked me thoroughly, mainly because it was a really cool roleplaying group I played with. *nods to Roark*

Erm...I'll go by system.

PS1:
Final Fantasy 8: Interesting plotline, interesting characters, very interactive, and a fascinating gameplay mechanic.
Honorable Mention: Koudelka: Graphically superior to almost anything on this system, a fascinating plotline and characters...but far too short for its own good.

PS2:
Shadow Hearts: Covenant: Fascinating world it creates(it IS sort of an indirect sequal to Koudelka), interesting characters, beautiful graphics, and a combat engine for the ages.
Honorable Mention: Xenosaga Episode 1: All the same reasons as SH:C to a lesser extent.

Gamecube:
Tales of Symphonia: The best battle system. EVER. Graphics are nice, and while the plotline is a tad cleche, the characters are interesting enough to make up for it.
Honorable Mention: Baten Kaitos: Great battle system, gorgeous graphics, a musical score better than most of what Square has put together, and an interesting plotline...but horrid, horrid voice acting and characters.

Kingdom Hearts. 1 AND 2. I have yet to play Chain of Memories, and besides that stupid card game I hear is involved I will probably love it. Basically anything Kingdom Hearts. I love it because it just gave me a feeling no game ever has, were there a fire my Kingdom Hearts games would be the first things I'd save (As in possessions, but really I'd save my dog and snake first) And I just love it. I'm playing a few good games right now (Final Fantasy IX and Xenosaga) but neither of them give me that feeling that Kingdom Hearts has.

And if you don't know what I mean when I say 'feeling' I mean like...one time I played Kingdom Hearts 2 for 15 hours straight (Only once, I DO have a life and I hardly ever have the time to play, this was a rare exception) 15 hours and I didn't even notice the time fly by. That to me is a good game.

Chain of Memories for the GBA? It's a bit disappointing to learn early on, a bit disappointing to fight enemies that were THAT strong (a.k.a. Vexen) and didn't see it coming, and way disappointing when you finish the final boss and go "WTF? That's it?" . Reverse/Rebirth is lame a$$ crap gathering virtual dust as I have gotten totally bored even if Riku is way cooler than Sora. The only thing worth my time was the ending credits :P

Okay, okay, back to the topic.
